The Kookaburra ball is the cricket ball of the southern hemisphere, and its defining characteristic is that it stops helping bowlers earlier than any other Test ball in use. It swings while the lacquer holds, seams while the seam is proud, and then goes quiet. Where the ball comes from

Kookaburra Sport was founded in 1890 by Alfred Grace Thompson, a Melbourne leatherworker who had learned the trade as a saddler and harness maker from his father William, a Scot. Cricket balls were a sideline of a leather business rather than the point of it, which is how a great many sporting goods manufacturers of that era began.

By the First World War the company was established as one of the leading Australian hand-made cricket ball manufacturers. The flagship model, the Kookaburra Turf, has been used in professional cricket since 1945, which means the ball that decided the Bradman-era Tests is a direct ancestor of the one in use now. The design has been refined continuously, but the basic architecture — four pieces of leather, a wound core, six rows of stitching — has not changed.

The company sits in Moorabbin, in Melbourne's south-east, on Chesterville Road, having moved there from East Brighton. It is an unremarkable industrial address for something that shapes the way half the world's Test cricket is played.

What is inside a cricket ball

Start at the centre. A cork core, sometimes layered with rubber, is wound tightly with worsted yarn — layer upon layer of it — into a sphere of a specified weight and hardness. That quilt is the engine of the ball. How tightly it is wound determines how hard the ball feels, how much energy it returns off the bat and off the pitch, and how quickly it deteriorates.

Over the quilt go the leather halves. Cricket ball leather is cowhide, tanned, dyed and then pressed into cups. Two cups are stitched together to make a hemisphere and two hemispheres are stitched together around the core, which is why a Test ball is described as four-piece. Cheaper training balls are two-piece, with a single moulded seam and no internal structure worth speaking of.

The seam is the join between the two hemispheres, raised by rows of thread stitched through both edges. It is the only part of a cricket ball that is not smooth, and consequently it is the only part that lets a bowler do anything other than bowl straight and fast.

The finish is lacquer. On a red Kookaburra it is a clear coating that gives the ball its factory gloss, holds the surface together for the first overs, and wears off progressively as the ball hits bat, ground and boundary rope.

The stitching question

This is the single most important fact about the Kookaburra and the one that explains almost everything else. Both the Kookaburra and the Dukes have six rows of thread along the seam. On the Dukes, all six rows are sewn by hand. On the Kookaburra, the central two are hand sewn and the outer rows are machine work.

The consequence is structural rather than cosmetic. Each hand-sewn row passes through the leather under tension and pulls the two halves together from the inside. More rows doing that means more of the ball's shape is being held by thread rather than by the leather alone. A Dukes therefore stays round longer, and its seam — which sits proud because it is being pulled up by six rows of tension — stays proud longer.

A Kookaburra's seam is flatter to begin with and flattens further with use. Bowlers who have used both describe the difference in exactly those terms: the English ball has a pronounced hand-stitched seam, the Australian one a thinner, flatter machine-stitched one. Since virtually every seam bowler in the game wants as large a seam as possible to grip on landing, that is not a small difference.

Why the seam flattens

Three things happen to a Kookaburra in the first hour of an innings. The lacquer wears off, unevenly, as the ball is struck and as it skids across a dry outfield. The leather scuffs. And the seam, which is not being held up by four of its six rows, gets pushed down by repeated impact with bat and ground.

Australian conditions accelerate all three. Hard, dry squares and fast, short-cut outfields are more abrasive than damp English ones. Heat softens lacquer. And the ball spends more time being struck along the ground at speed, because Australian outfields are quick and boundaries are long enough that ground shots run rather than reaching the rope in one bounce.

The commonly cited figure among bowlers is that a Kookaburra loses its shine and its seam definition around the twenty-over mark. That is not a measured constant — it depends on the ground, the weather, the surface and how the ball has been treated — but it is a reasonable planning assumption, and it is the assumption Australian captains bowl to.

The twenty-over window

Understanding the window explains most Australian bowling tactics. Overs one to about ten are for conventional swing, while the lacquer is intact and the ball is at its heaviest and hardest. Overs ten to about twenty-five are for seam movement and bounce, while the seam still stands proud enough to grip and the ball is hard enough to carry through to the keeper. After that, the ball is doing very little.

This is why Australian new-ball attacks are stacked with the best bowlers in the side and why they bowl in short, intense bursts rather than long defensive spells. It is also why an Australian captain will take the second new ball at eighty overs almost without exception. The difference between an eighty-over Kookaburra and a fresh one is the difference between two entirely different games.

And it is why Australian batting orders have historically been built to survive a start rather than to attack from ball one. The reward for getting through twenty-five overs with wickets in hand is enormous, because the next fifty-five are as easy as Test cricket gets.

The middle-overs problem

The stretch from about over thirty to over seventy-five with an old Kookaburra is the hardest passage in the game to bowl. The ball is soft, the seam is flat, there is no swing and little seam, and the pitch — if it is a good Australian pitch — is at its most reliable. Bowlers in that period are not trying to take wickets so much as trying not to leak runs while waiting for something to change.

The standard responses are all forms of patience. Bowl a hard length outside off and build pressure. Use the crease and angle to create variation the ball will not provide. Bring the spinner on for long spells to hold an end. Set defensive fields and make the batter play the same shot forty times.

It is not accidental that Australia has produced so many bowlers celebrated for relentless accuracy rather than exotic variation. The Kookaburra rewards the bowler who can do the same thing for six overs more than the one who can do six different things.

Reverse swing and the abrasion that will not last

Reverse swing requires a large difference between the two sides of the ball: one kept as smooth and shiny as possible, the other allowed to become rough and scuffed. As the ball ages and the difference grows, the airflow behaves in a way that makes an old ball swing the opposite way to a new one, often late and at speed.

The Kookaburra is a harder ball to reverse than the Dukes or the SG, and the reason is the same softening problem. The abrasion does not last in a useful form, because the surface degrades all over rather than developing a stable rough side, and the ball loses hardness so quickly that the pace needed to make reverse swing bite is difficult to sustain.

It happens — Australian and Pakistani bowlers have reversed the Kookaburra to devastating effect on dry grounds — but it is a specialist skill rather than a default option, and it depends heavily on the outfield. Grounds with abrasive surfaces produce it. Lush ones do not.

The table is a simplification, and the row that does most of the explanatory work is the second one. Almost everything else follows from how many rows of thread are holding the ball together.

What the county experiment proved

England spent three seasons testing the Australian ball in English conditions, and the results are the best available evidence for what a Kookaburra does when it is used somewhere it was not designed for.

The trial came out of Andrew Strauss's high-performance review. The theory was that English bowlers had grown dependent on a ball that did the work for them, and that forcing them to bowl with a Kookaburra would develop the extreme skills needed to take wickets overseas, give spinners a role earlier in matches, and make batters score more quickly. The Kookaburra was used for two rounds of the County Championship in 2023 and four of the fourteen rounds in both 2024 and 2025.

It did not work as intended. Seventeen of the first eighteen Kookaburra fixtures in 2024 were drawn. In 2025 the average first-innings total across the Kookaburra rounds was 430, fifty-nine individual scores of 100 or more were made, and Surrey declared on 820 for 9 against Durham at The Oval — a club record. Two rounds in June that year were widely described as dull cricket rather than developmental cricket.

Why the trial was scrapped

Directors of cricket from the eighteen first-class counties made clear at a meeting in late 2025 that they wanted the experiment ended, and the decision to return to the Dukes for the whole of the 2026 season was confirmed by the Cricket Advisory Group, a sub-committee of the ECB's Professional Game Committee.

The interesting wrinkle is that the trial did partly achieve one of its stated aims: Kookaburra rounds did increase the use of spin in Championship matches, because captains with no seam movement available turned to slow bowlers to hold an end. What it did not do was produce results, and a competition that produces draws produces neither jeopardy nor development.

The lesson for anyone reading Australian cricket is a useful one in reverse. The Kookaburra is not a ball that suppresses movement in a vacuum. It is a ball that works in partnership with a hard, bouncy, abrasive surface. Put it on a soft, green English pitch in April and you get 820 for 9. Put it on a dry Perth square and you get a Test finished in two days.

Why Australia has never used anything else

Partly commerce — Kookaburra is an Australian company that has supplied the domestic game since the nineteenth century, and Cricket Australia has no reason to import a ball. Partly habit. But mostly because the ball and the conditions fit each other.

Australian pitches take wickets through bounce and carry rather than through lateral movement. A bowler at Optus Stadium or the Gabba does not need a seam that stands proud for fifty overs, because the surface is generating steep bounce for him regardless. The dismissals that matter are caught behind and caught at slip off a hard length, and those are available with a soft ball on a fast pitch. A Dukes in Australia would produce a different game, but not obviously a better one.

There is also a developmental argument that cuts the other way, and Australian coaches make it privately: a generation raised on a ball that stops swinging at over fifteen produces bowlers who never fully learn to swing it, which is a problem the moment they land in England for an Ashes tour. The county experiment was England's attempt to solve the mirror image of that same problem.

The white ball in the Big Bash and one-day cricket

The white Kookaburra is the standard for men's and women's one-day internationals, T20 internationals, the Big Bash League and the domestic one-day cup. It is the same architecture with different finishing: white pigment and a heavier lacquer to keep the ball visible under lights and against a crowd background.

The heavier coating changes the timetable. A white ball tends to swing hard for a very short period and then scuff and discolour quickly, which is why limited-overs playing conditions have experimented repeatedly with how many balls are used in an innings and when they are changed. It is also why white-ball death bowling relies on yorkers, slower balls and wide lines rather than on movement — there is no movement left to use.

For a spectator, the practical effect is the one seen every summer in the Big Bash format: a hard new ball for two or three overs, then a long stretch where bowlers are managing rather than attacking, then a death phase decided almost entirely by execution.

The pink Kookaburra

The pink ball exists because a red one is invisible under floodlights and a white one is indistinguishable from the players' clothing in Test cricket. Kookaburra spent years developing it, testing shade after shade before the first day-night Test at Adelaide Oval in November 2015.

The construction differs from a red ball in three ways. The leather is drum-dyed so the colour penetrates the skin rather than sitting on the surface. Additional pigment covers the grain, and a nitro-cellulose lacquer top coat is applied to preserve the colour through twilight and through the natural abrasion of an innings. And the seam is stitched in black thread rather than white, which was tested specifically for contrast and drew immediate positive feedback from players.

Ball changes and the eighty-over rule

Under standard Test playing conditions a fielding side may take a new ball after eighty overs of an innings. In Australia the second new ball is taken at eighty almost without exception, because the drop-off in what an old Kookaburra offers is so severe that no captain wants to bowl with it any longer than necessary.

Umpires can also change a ball mid-innings if it goes out of shape, is damaged or is lost. In those cases the replacement is a used ball of comparable wear from a box the umpires carry, not a new one — which is why you occasionally see a fielding side visibly delighted or visibly deflated by a replacement, depending on whether the chosen ball is harder or softer than the one it replaces.

The shape gauge is a small ring the umpires carry. If the ball no longer passes through it, it is out of shape and gets replaced. With a Kookaburra that has been hit hard on a dry ground, this comes up more often than with a Dukes.

Grades, sizes and buying one

Kookaburra sells a range well below the Turf. Grades descend through match-quality four-piece balls with progressively fewer hand-stitched features, into club and practice models, and finally into two-piece and moulded balls for training and juniors. The prices descend accordingly, and the gap between the top and the bottom of the range is large.

Sizes are set by the Laws rather than by the manufacturer. A men's ball is heavier and larger than a women's ball, which is heavier and larger again than a junior ball, and each has a specified weight and circumference range. Junior competitions in Australia use size-adjusted balls as part of the modified formats that carry players through the age groups.

If you are buying for a club, the practical advice from most Australian curators and club captains is to buy the best ball the budget allows for match days and a much cheaper one for training, because a good ball used in the nets is a good ball wasted.

Looking after a red ball

Shining a ball is legal within limits: sweat and saliva rules have changed over time, and the current playing conditions should be checked, but polishing on clothing is permitted and remains the standard method. Applying any artificial substance to the ball is not permitted, and the consequences of getting that wrong are severe and well documented in Australian cricket's recent history.

Practically, the things that matter are consistency and discipline. Pick one side to shine at the start of the innings and never shine the other. Keep the ball dry. Get it back to the shiner quickly rather than letting six fielders handle it. And do not throw it in on the bounce across a hard outfield unless you have to, because every bounce is abrasion you did not choose.
