Blitz packages explained: the arithmetic of extra rushers
Blitz packages explained from the protection rules up: how a free rusher is manufactured, what every extra rusher costs in coverage, and the limits.

Blitz packages explained badly sound like a matter of nerve: send more men, hit the quarterback, hope. Watch a pressure that actually works and the nerve is nowhere in it. Somebody was unblocked, and he was unblocked because the offence counted correctly and pointed in the wrong direction, or counted correctly and ran out of bodies, or counted correctly and had the right man block the wrong gap.
A pass rush is an accounting exercise conducted at speed by nine people who cannot hear each other.
That is the useful frame for the whole subject. There are eleven defenders. Every one you send at the quarterback is one you have taken out of coverage, and the exchange rate between those two things is what a defensive coordinator is actually trading in when he picks a call. This piece works through the ledger: how many bodies each side can commit, how a free rusher is manufactured, what the coverage behind each pressure has to look like, and where the rulebook draws the lines.
The ledger every pressure is drawn from
Start with the counts, because everything else is downstream of them.
The defence has eleven players. The standard rush is four, which leaves seven to cover. A blitz, properly defined, is any call that sends five or more, and each additional rusher subtracts exactly one from the seven.
Six covering defenders can still be arranged as two deep and four underneath, or three deep and three underneath. Five cannot cover deep and underneath in any balanced way, so a six-man pressure is nearly always man coverage with a single safety over the top. Four covering defenders means no safety at all, every receiver in man coverage with nothing behind, and a quarterback who only has to win once.
That is the cost side. The benefit side is the offence's own ceiling.
The offence runs out of blockers before it runs out of will
Eleven offensive players. Five are linemen, who block on a pass unless something has gone very wrong. One is the quarterback. That leaves five eligible receivers, and each one the offence keeps in to protect is one fewer target for the throw.
Read the two charts against each other and a fact emerges that surprises people who think of blitzing as a numbers game. A seven-man rush against maximum protection is seven on seven. Nobody is unblocked. And the defence still has four covering three, which means it can double every remaining receiver.
So an offence willing to keep everybody in can defeat any blitz by pure arithmetic. It simply has to accept that it is running a three-man route against a defence that can double all three, which is not an offence so much as a delaying tactic.
Which tells you the real point. Blitzing is not about outnumbering the protection. It is about making the protection assign the wrong man.
What a protection actually is, and the word that sets it
Before the snap, one player declares the reference point for the whole protection. Usually the centre, sometimes the quarterback, pointing at a linebacker and calling him the Mike. That declaration is not a scouting note. It is an instruction that tells five linemen and a running back who each of them is responsible for.
Three families of protection sit on top of that declaration.
Man protection, often called big on big, assigns each lineman a specific defender. The tackle takes the end, the guard takes the tackle, the centre takes the declared Mike or helps, and the back takes whoever is left over. It handles unusual rush paths well, because a lineman follows his man wherever he goes. It handles stunts badly, because two rushers crossing can drag two blockers out of the middle of the pocket.
Slide protection assigns gaps rather than men. The five linemen slide as a unit toward one side, each taking the gap next to him, and the back is responsible for the edge on the other side. It handles stunts and games beautifully, because a lineman blocks whoever enters his gap and does not care who it is. It handles overload badly, because the slide can only cover so many gaps and the back cannot block two people.
Half slide does both: three linemen slide one way, two block man the other, with the back on the man side.
Every one of these is set by the declaration. Slide left or slide right is determined by where the Mike was called. Which linemen are on man and which are sliding is determined by the same word.
Now the mechanism the whole subject turns on. If the defence can get the offence to declare a Mike who does not rush, and rush a defender the declaration did not account for, somebody is free without a single extra body being sent. The count was correct. The direction was wrong.

This is the sequence a disguised pressure runs. Nothing in it requires sending more than five, and several versions send only four.
A blitz that beats a protection by outnumbering it is the crude version. A blitz that beats a protection by aiming its own rules at empty space is the version that gets coached, and it explains why so many pressures involve linebackers doing a great deal of moving around for what turns out to be a four-man rush.
Stunts and games: the same trick with four rushers
Before adding anybody, a front can attack the declaration with the four it already has, and this is where most professional pressure comes from.
A stunt, or a game, is two rushers swapping paths after the snap. The simplest version sends a defensive end hard inside to occupy the guard while the defensive tackle loops behind him to the outside. The end is not trying to win. He is trying to make two blockers commit to one place so that the looping rusher arrives at a gap with nobody left in it.
The reason this works has nothing to do with athleticism and everything to do with the protection family being used. Against man protection, a game is devastating, because each lineman is chasing an assigned defender and two of them can be dragged into the same space, leaving a lane behind them that neither is responsible for. Against slide protection it is much less effective, because a lineman who blocks a gap rather than a man simply blocks whoever arrives in it, and the looper runs into a fresh blocker who was standing there anyway.
That difference is why fronts and coverages are chosen together with an idea of what the offence protects with, and why a defensive line coach spends the week deciding which games to carry rather than how hard to rush.
The second four-man idea is the overload. Slide protection can only slide one way. Put four rushers to one side of the centre and one to the other, and the slide can account for the heavy side or the light side but not both, and whichever it chooses leaves the running back alone against somebody. A back is a competent blocker against another back. Against a defensive end who has been given a running start from outside the tackle, he is a speed bump with a job title.
The offence's answer to overload is not a better block. It is to change the picture: motion a receiver across to give the protection a different reference point, shift the tight end to the overloaded side to add a body there, or check to a quick throw in the direction the pressure is coming from, because the space a four-man overload vacates is the flat behind it.
None of these requires a fifth rusher. All of them produce the thing a fifth rusher was supposed to buy. Which is the argument this whole section of defensive coaching has been having with itself for twenty years, and it is the reason the crude blitz has slowly become a situational tool rather than a defensive identity.
The zone blitz made pressure affordable
For a long time the honest description of blitzing was that it traded coverage for speed and you took what you were given. The zone blitz broke that trade, and it did so with one idea: if you are going to add a rusher, subtract a different one.
The mechanism is an exchange. A defensive lineman, who would normally rush, drops out into a short zone. A linebacker or defensive back, who would normally cover, rushes. The total number rushing goes from four to five, but only because one of the four became a coverage defender and two new ones came from elsewhere. The result is a five-man rush with six in coverage, which is enough to play three deep zones and three underneath.
That structure is the fire zone, and it is the reason pressure stopped being a gamble. Three deep defenders means no receiver runs free behind the coverage, which is the outcome that makes blitzing expensive. Three underneath defenders is thin, but it is enough to occupy the exact spaces a quarterback under pressure wants to throw to, and the deep structure behind it is the same one described in the piece on the three-deep zone family.
The obvious objection is that a 300-pound defensive lineman cannot cover anybody. He does not have to. His job in a curl-to-flat zone is to be an obstacle in a throwing lane at a moment when the quarterback has under two seconds and is looking at his hot route. He is not covering the receiver. He is standing where the ball has to go.

The cost is real and it is paid on the ground. A defence that regularly drops linemen and rushes linebackers is a defence whose front is not where it is supposed to be against the run, and whose best pass rushers spend a proportion of their snaps running backwards. Against a good run game, the fire zone is where explosive runs come from.
The green dog: a free rusher that costs nothing at all
The most efficient pressure in football is barely a call.
In man coverage, somebody is assigned to the running back. If the back releases into a route, that defender covers him. If the back stays in to block, his assigned man has nobody to cover, and rather than stand around he rushes. That is a green dog, and its economics are unique: the defence gains a rusher at zero coverage cost, because the receiver he was covering removed himself from the route by choosing to block.
Look at what that does to the protection ledger. The offence added a blocker to handle a five-man rush and thereby created a sixth rusher. It cannot win that exchange by adding another blocker, because every blocker it adds against man coverage produces the same effect.
The counters are all about timing rather than numbers. The back can check the pressure and release late, so the green dog defender has to peel off and cover a man who is already moving. The back can be sent immediately into the flat, forcing the defender to leave. Or the offence can play from an empty formation with nobody in the backfield at all, which removes the green dog entirely by removing the back, at the price of five linemen protecting alone.
That last point is why empty is a useful blitz-beating formation and a dangerous one. It forces the defence to declare, because with five receivers spread out there is nowhere for a disguised defender to hide. It also means a single free rusher is unblocked with nobody to pick him up.
Simulated pressure, and why the trend went the other way
If you follow the argument this far, a conclusion arrives that the last decade of defensive coaching has already reached. If the value of a blitz comes mostly from the presnap picture and the declaration it forces, then the picture is the valuable part and the extra rusher is the expensive part.
So show the picture and do not send the rusher.
A simulated pressure, sometimes called a creeper, puts six defenders on the line of scrimmage in threatening positions, and then rushes four of them while the other two drop. The protection has already slid toward the threat. The four who rush attack the side the slide left, often with an interior lineman looping into a gap the slide vacated. And seven defenders are still in coverage, which is the same number as on a plain four-man rush.
The double A-gap look does the same work from a different angle. Two linebackers stand directly over the gaps either side of the centre. That alignment forces a declaration, forces the centre to stay home rather than help, and generally forces the running back to stay in to protect. All three of those things are worth having, and the defence can collect them and then rush four anyway.
The practical consequence is that any count of how often a team blitzes is a poor measure of how much pressure it designs. A defence that never sends five may be manufacturing more free rushers than one that sends six every third down, which is why analysts have moved toward measuring pressure and the time it takes to generate it rather than counting rushers.
The rules that draw the boundary
Almost everything above is permitted by a rulebook that is far stricter with the offence than with the defence, and the asymmetry is worth stating precisely because it is the reason blitz design has so much room in it.
Rule 7, Section 5, Article 1 tells the offence how to stand. Seven or more players on the line at the snap, eligible receivers at both ends of it, everyone else clearly on or clearly off. There is no corresponding article for the defence. Behind the neutral zone a defence may put its eleven players anywhere it likes, in any grouping, facing any direction, and may send all of them.
Four rules then bound what those players can do.
The neutral zone infraction, Rule 7-4-4. A defender who moves beyond the neutral zone before the snap and gets parallel to or beyond an offensive lineman with an unimpeded path to the quarterback commits a foul, and the officials blow the whistle immediately even though no contact has occurred. Every timed blitz, every pressure that tries to steal a half-count on the snap, is playing against this rule. Five yards and a dead ball is the price of being early.
Contact with receivers, Rule 8 Section 4. Within five yards of the line a defender may chuck an eligible receiver in front of him, and may maintain continuous contact so long as the receiver has not moved past him. Beyond five yards, while the passer remains in the pocket, a defender cannot initiate contact with a receiver trying to evade him. Illegal contact costs five yards and an automatic first down.
That rule is the reason man coverage behind a blitz is played pressed up at the line. The five-yard zone is the only place a defender is allowed to be physical, and disrupting the timing of a route is the only way five defenders survive against five receivers with no help.
The end of restrictions, Rule 8-4-7. This one is the least known and the most consequential for blitzing. Once the passer carries the ball outside the pocket area, the five-yard restriction stops applying altogether. Defenders may then use hands, arms and body on receivers anywhere on the field, at any depth. Defensive holding, on the other hand, remains a foul for the rest of the down.
Read that from the offence's side and a mobile quarterback is beating the blitz twice. He is escaping the free rusher, which was the point of the call, and he is doing it in a way that the rules respond to by unshackling the coverage he just beat. Read it from the defence's side and it explains why the coaching instruction against a mobile passer is to rush with discipline rather than depth, because the moment he is outside the pocket the coverage rules change in the defence's favour and the only thing that can still go wrong is a scramble.
Roughing the passer, Rule 12-2-11. The article is long and every part of it lands on the blitzer. Once the ball has been released, a rusher may make direct contact only up through his first step, and after that he must be attempting to avoid contact. He must not land on the passer with all or most of his body weight, and must strive to fall to the side or brace with his arms. He must not hit the head or neck area, and must not lower his head into the passer. He must not forcibly hit at or below the knee of a passer with a foot on the ground, even if the initial contact was higher, and even if he is being blocked, unless he was driven into the passer with no opportunity to avoid him.
The exception in that article is the interesting one. When the passer leaves the pocket and continues moving or throws on the run, he loses the one-step protection and the protection against a low hit, while keeping the rest. The passer is safest exactly where the blitz is trying to reach him, and least protected when he has escaped it.
Two more articles catch the finish. The horse-collar rule, 12-2-16, does not apply to a runner inside the pocket area, so a rusher may grab the collar of a quarterback who has not left it. The hip-drop tackle, added at 12-2-18, is a foul anywhere: grabbing or wrapping the runner and then unweighting by swivelling and dropping the hips so as to land on or trap his legs at or below the knee. Fifteen yards and an automatic first down, and it is a technique that a rusher arriving free at high speed is unusually likely to fall into.
What a failed blitz actually costs
Here is the trade in a constructed example. The numbers are invented to make the shape visible; nothing here describes a real play.
A defence sends six. Five defenders are left, one of whom stays deep, so four are in man coverage on four eligible receivers, and the back has stayed in to make it six blockers against six rushers.
Nobody is free. The blitz has achieved nothing except to place four defenders in man coverage with a single safety, and the offence's third receiver is running against a linebacker with no help inside. If that linebacker loses by a step, the throw is not a completion for eight yards. It is a completion into the space where four coverage defenders used to be, with one safety converging from the middle of the field, and the play ends somewhere between thirty yards and the end zone.
That is the honest asymmetry of blitzing, and it is why the outcomes cluster at the extremes. A four-man rush that loses gives up a normal completion. A six-man rush that loses gives up an explosive play, because the defenders who would have limited it were sent at the quarterback. The distribution is not a bell curve, it is two lumps, and any evaluation that averages them tells you almost nothing. Framing pressure decisions in terms of expected points rather than yards is the only way to compare a call that produces sacks and disasters with one that produces neither.
The situations where a blitz is a trap
Some downs look like blitz downs and are not.
Third and long is the classic error. The offence expects pressure, has time to protect because the throw is deep, can keep seven men in, and has a quarterback who has been told exactly which defender to throw against. Sending six into that is sending six into the one situation the offence has prepared for.
The quick game is a harder problem, because the ball leaves before the extra rusher can matter. If the throw is out in the time it takes a blitzer to run five yards, the pressure did nothing except remove a coverage defender from the flat where the ball is going. This is also why the screen is the cleanest blitz counter in the sport: the rushers' own momentum carries them past the play, and the blockers they beat release into the space in front of the catch. A well-timed screen turns an aggressive call into a convoy.
Against a run fake, the calculation inverts again. Protection on a play-action pass is usually turned toward the run action, which either helps a pressure enormously or wastes it entirely depending on which side the blitz is coming from. The reason the run fake works on second-level defenders is the same reason it interacts unpredictably with pressure: the linebackers who were supposed to blitz are the ones being asked to look at the back.
The better spots are quieter. Early downs against heavy personnel, when the offence has a tight end committed to blocking and only three receivers to release. The snap after a big gain, when the offence is trying to establish rhythm rather than protect. Any down where the offence has shown a protection the defence has an answer for, which is a reason to think about the previous drive as much as the current one.
Installing a blitz costs more than calling one
The last constraint is not tactical, it is a matter of hours available.
A pressure is not a single call. It is a rush pattern plus a coverage plus a set of adjustments for every protection the offence might use, plus rules for what happens when a receiver motions across, plus the check that gets the defence out of it entirely when the offence lines up in a formation the call cannot handle. All of that has to be taught, and the collective agreement caps how much padded practice and offseason work is available to teach it in.
The result is that defences carry fewer distinct pressures than a broadcast makes it look. What varies is the presnap picture, which is cheap to change, rather than the underlying rush and coverage, which is expensive. A single fire zone can be presented from a dozen alignments, and to the protection each one looks like a different problem.
A defence with a dozen pressures it half-knows is worse than a defence with four it can run against any protection, because the failure mode of a half-known pressure is not a missed sack. It is two defenders rushing the same gap while nobody covers the slot.
What to check before the snap
Watch a defence rather than the ball for one series and the calls become legible. Five things, in order.
Count the safeties and check their depth. Two deep and level is a shell that can be almost anything. One deep is a six-man pressure or man coverage. None is Cover 0, and somebody is about to be very open or very sacked.
Look at the corners' cushion. Press alignment with no safety over the top is a defence that has accepted man coverage without help, which is the coverage that accompanies the biggest pressures. Off coverage with a deep safety is usually not a blitz at all.
Find the linebackers' depth relative to the ball. Standing in the A gaps is a declaration-forcing look. It is worth watching whether they are still there at the snap, because roughly half the time they are not, and the ones who back out tell you it was a simulated pressure.
Watch the nickel defender. In sub packages built around a fifth defensive back, the nickel is the most common extra rusher in football, because he starts close to the line, outside the tackle, in the exact spot a running back has the hardest time reaching.
Then watch the centre's arm. Where he points is where the protection turned. If the man he pointed at drops into coverage, you are about to see who was left over.
After the snap there is only one thing to look for, and it settles the argument every time. Find the rusher nobody blocked, and then find whether the quarterback knew about him. If the ball came out fast to the space that rusher left, the offence won the exchange. If it did not, the offence lost it before the ball was snapped, in the half-second when somebody pointed at the wrong man.
