Bowling plans in cricket: how bowlers set a batter up
How a bowling plan is built for a specific batter: the dismissal shape, the field that enforces it, when to abandon it, and what the analyst adds.

Two bowlers land the ball in the same place for six deliveries. One of them is described afterwards as having bowled beautifully and gone wicketless. The other is described as having worked a batter out. Nothing separates them on a pitch map, and everything separates them in the over, because the second bowler's six deliveries were in an order, and the order was the point.
Bowling plans in cricket are sequences, not coordinates. A plan names a specific way it intends to dismiss a specific batter, arranges deliveries so that each one makes the next more likely to succeed, sets the field that turns the sequence into a trap rather than a suggestion, and fixes in advance the moment it will be given up. Line and length is what a single ball has. A plan is what a passage of play has.
This is how one gets built, why the field is half of it, what the analyst puts in, and how you can see the whole thing from a seat in the stand once you know the shape it takes.
A line is a coordinate, a plan is a sequence
Take the simplest possible example. A right-arm seamer to a right-handed batter, ball hard, a little in the surface.
A line is: fourth stump. A length is: back of a good length. Those two facts describe where the ball pitches, and a bowler who hits that spot repeatedly will be economical against most players.
A plan is different in kind. It says: this batter drives on the up when the ball is full, and he does it well enough that we are not going to invite it. He is less comfortable when he has to play at something that is going away from him at the last moment. So we bowl three deliveries that hold their line and hit the top of off stump, which he must play at, then one that starts on the same line and leaves him, and we have two catchers behind square specifically for the outside edge that comes from a batter playing at the fourth ball as if it were the third.
The first three deliveries are not attempts to take a wicket. They are the reason the fourth is dangerous. A bowler who bowls the fourth ball first has bowled a good delivery to a batter with no reason to play at it.
That is the entire difference, and everything else in plan construction follows from it. A plan uses deliveries as investment. Some balls are spent to change what the batter expects, and the return arrives later.

Structural rules from the Laws of Cricket and the standard playing conditions. They apply regardless of format, opponent or conditions.
What a bowling plan for one batter actually contains
Ask a bowling coach to write a plan down and you get four things, in this order.
A named dismissal. Not "get him out", but caught behind driving, or bowled through the gate, or caught at deep square leg pulling. Naming it forces every other decision, because a plan hunting an edge and a plan hunting a top edge want opposite deliveries and opposite fields.
A core delivery. The one ball the plan is built around, described in a way the bowler can feel rather than measure. Bowlers do not execute coordinates. They execute an aiming point, a seam position, a wrist thought or a front-arm cue, and the translation from the analytical finding to the physical cue is the part that decides whether a plan survives contact.
Setting-up deliveries. The balls that make the core delivery work. They might be three of the same to establish a rhythm the batter trusts, or a change of pace, or a change of angle at the crease, or a bouncer that has no wicket-taking purpose at all and exists to move the batter's weight backwards.
An exit. The condition under which the plan stops. Written before the innings, because nobody makes a good decision about abandoning a plan while being hit for consecutive boundaries.
A fifth item belongs to the captain rather than the bowler: the field the plan requires. If the field is not available, the plan is not available, and that constraint is decided in the same conversation rather than afterwards.
Choosing the dismissal before choosing the delivery
The most common mistake in amateur planning is starting from the delivery. The professional habit is to start from the dismissal and work backwards, because the dismissal determines everything downstream.
There are only so many ways a batter gets out, and each one has a set of conditions that make it likely.
An outside edge requires the batter to play at a ball he could leave, and it requires movement, whether that is seam off the pitch, late swing or a spinner's turn away from the bat. It also requires catchers, which costs a captain fielders he might have used elsewhere.
Bowled or leg before requires the batter to miss a ball that hits the stumps, which usually means either a delivery straighter than the previous ones or one that beats the bat in the air rather than off the surface. Against a batter with a strong front-foot press, the ball that keeps a fraction low or holds its line does the work.
A catch in the ring requires a mishit into a specific area, which means the plan is aiming to produce a particular stroke rather than an error of judgement. A catch on the boundary is the same idea at higher risk, and it costs a fielder standing a long way from anything else.
A run out belongs to the field rather than the bowler, but a plan can create the conditions by forcing scoring into an area where the fielder is quick and the single is not really there.
Naming the dismissal also names what the plan will concede. A plan hunting the outside edge with catchers in place gives up singles behind square. A plan hunting the top edge of the pull gives up the drive. The captain agrees to the cost before the first ball, which is why a field that looks strange in the fourth over is often a field that has already accepted a specific leak.
Length is chosen against the batter, not against the pitch alone
Good length is not a fixed distance from the stumps, and this is the point at which plans go wrong most often.
The band that troubles a batter is defined by where he wants to meet the ball. A player who presses hard onto the front foot and plays the ball early is troubled by a length pulled slightly back, because it arrives with him already committed. A player who sits back and plays late is troubled by fullness, because it arrives before his weight has settled. The same delivery is a half-volley to one and awkward to the other, and no amount of accuracy against the wrong target achieves anything.
Height off the surface then modifies the whole calculation. On a surface with steep bounce the troubling band moves back, because a ball pitched up arrives higher than the driving zone. On a low, slow surface it moves forward, because anything short sits up to be hit. This is why plans are re-cut on the morning of a match rather than carried unchanged from the last venue, and why the same bowler's plan against the same batter looks different in two countries.
Finally, the ball's condition moves the band during an innings. A hard new ball carrying through allows a fuller length, since the seam has a chance to work and the edge carries. An older ball on a dry outfield brings a different set of options into play, including the reverse swing that changes what a full length means, and the taking of a second new ball resets the whole question mid-innings.

The field goes down before the plan can work
A plan without its field is a wish. Nine fielders is fewer than the number of areas worth covering, so every setting is a decision about what to leave open, and the openings have to match what the plan is trying to produce.
Consider a plan hunting an edge from a batter driving at a ball that leaves him. It needs catchers behind square on the off side, which means fielders taken out of the ring. That leaves the square singles available, and it means the plan is accepting a rotating strike in return for a chance of a wicket. If the captain quietly withdraws the second catcher to save runs, the plan has been cancelled without anybody saying so, because the dismissal it was hunting can now only be taken by one pair of hands.
The reverse case is just as common. A plan aiming to make a batter hit across the line into the leg side needs the boundary rider in the right place and the ring fielder blocking the safe single, and the position has to be chosen from where this batter's mishits actually go rather than from the traditional name for the position. The conventional map of fielding positions is a vocabulary rather than a prescription, and a rider standing ten yards from where the shot goes is a rider not in the plan.
Two Law-level constraints frame the whole exercise. No more than two fielders other than the wicketkeeper may stand behind the popping crease on the on side, which is what stops a captain simply ringing the leg side against short bowling. And in limited-overs cricket the number permitted outside the inner circle changes by phase, so the powerplay rules dictate which plans are even legal at a given point in the innings.
The practical test of whether a captain and a bowler are working from the same plan is simple: watch whether the field changes when the bowler changes his delivery. If it does not, one of them is improvising.
Setting a batter up across an over, and across a spell
Plans operate on two timescales, and confusing them is a source of a lot of bad cricket.
The over-length plan compresses the whole idea into six deliveries. Three establishing balls, a variation, a return to the establishing ball, then the delivery the sequence was built for. This is the version that suits limited-overs cricket, where a bowler may only face a batter for a handful of overs and has to make each spell self-contained.
The spell-length plan spreads the same logic over half an hour or more. The bowler might spend an entire over building a pattern with no attempt at a wicket, come back two overs later and repeat it, then break it in the third. This works in Test cricket because dot balls are not a cost in the same way, and because a batter who has settled into a rhythm across twenty deliveries is more thoroughly deceived when it breaks than one who has seen three.
There is a third timescale that only the long form allows: the innings-length and series-length plan. A bowler can bowl a batter a particular way for a whole first innings, knowing that the pattern is being learned, purely so that the same shape can be broken in the second. Plans built across a series are why a bowler's figures in a single Test can understate what he was doing.
The connecting principle is expectation. Every plan is an attempt to make the batter play a delivery as though it were the previous delivery. The number of balls needed to establish that expectation is the only thing that changes with the timescale.
Bowling plans in Test cricket run on a much longer clock
The long form gives a plan the two things it most wants: time and consequence.
Time means a bowler can spend deliveries. A maiden that concedes nothing and takes nothing is not a wasted over in a Test, because it has advanced a pattern and added to the batter's accumulated fatigue and frustration. In a format with a minimum of ninety overs in a day, the plan can afford an investment period that would be reckless in a fifty-over innings.
Consequence means the batter cannot simply take the risk. A Test batter who plays a low-percentage shot to break a pattern is risking the whole innings, and the plan is partly built on that reluctance. Bowling a strangling line to a batter who must not get out is a genuinely different operation from bowling it to one who is happy to trade his wicket for eight quick runs.
Test plans also exploit variables that only exist over long periods. The ball ages and changes what is possible. The surface wears, and the rough outside a batter's off stump becomes a target for a spinner turning it away. Bowlers tire, and a plan that requires a specific bouncer has to be scheduled while the bowler still has it. Sessions have shapes, and a plan launched with fifteen minutes to the interval is aimed at a different psychological state from one launched at the start of a session.
The captain's role expands correspondingly, because managing which bowler is available for which plan across a long day is a resource problem rather than a tactical one, and it is one of the harder parts of what a captain is actually doing out there.
White-ball plans are a budget spread across a fixed allocation
Change the format and the arithmetic inverts.
A Twenty20 bowler has four overs and a fifty-over bowler has ten. Every delivery has an economy cost as well as a wicket purpose, and a setting-up ball that concedes a boundary has spent real currency. That changes what a plan can look like.
First, plans get shorter. There is rarely room for three investment deliveries, so the setting-up work has to be done by variations that are themselves reasonably safe, or by the field rather than by the ball.
Second, plans become defensive with a wicket-taking side effect rather than the other way round. The standard white-ball plan is to close the batter's strongest scoring area, force the ball into his least productive one, and take the wicket that comes from him trying to escape. The dismissal is real, and it is a consequence of the containment rather than the primary mechanism.
Third, the field does far more of the work, because fielding restrictions make certain plans impossible at certain moments and free at others. A plan requiring five fielders on the boundary simply does not exist inside the first six overs of a Twenty20 innings.
Fourth, matchups dominate. With four overs to spend, a captain will hold a bowler back specifically for one batter, which means the plan and the bowling change are the same decision.

The plan changes shape when a left-hander walks in
Nothing rewrites a plan faster than a change of handedness at the striker's end, and the reason is geometry rather than skill.
A right-arm bowler going over the wicket to a right-hander operates on a line that runs across the batter from outside off. The same bowler to a left-hander is angling the ball across in the opposite sense, so a delivery that held its line against a right-hander now leaves the left-hander, and the ball that used to leave now comes back in. Every reference point moves at once.
The field moves with it. A plan built around catchers behind square on the off side is a plan built for one handedness, and against the other it either needs rebuilding or the fielders need moving, which costs time and tells the batting side exactly what is happening.
Angle at the crease is the cheapest response. A bowler moving wide on the crease or tight to the stumps changes the line the ball is travelling on without changing anything he does with his hand, and this is the most common in-over adjustment in professional cricket. Spinners face the sharpest version of the question, because turn is directional. A finger spinner turning the ball away from a right-hander turns it into a left-hander, so the same bowler is running two entirely different plans depending on who is on strike. This is why the varieties of spin map so tightly onto which batter is at which end, and why a settled left and right partnership breaks a bowling plan more effectively than either batter would alone.
Matchups are a plan's shortcut and its most common trap
The matchup is the idea that a particular bowler type has an advantage against a particular batter, and it now drives a large share of bowling changes in white-ball cricket.
Used well, it is a shortcut to a plan. It says: this batter has repeatedly been troubled by this kind of delivery, so start there rather than spending overs discovering it.
Used badly, it is three problems at once. The first is sample size, since the number of deliveries a specific batter has faced from a specific bowler type in a specific phase is often far smaller than the confidence placed on it. The second is that matchups describe the past of a player who is actively working on his weaknesses, and a professional batter who has been repeatedly exposed to one type of bowling will have spent the winter addressing it. The third is that a matchup can be a statement about the field and the phase rather than about the bowling, and the effect disappears when either changes.

When to abandon a bowling plan
The hardest judgement in bowling is not what to try, it is when to stop trying it, and the reason is that the obvious signal is the wrong one.
Runs are not the signal. A plan can be working perfectly while conceding boundaries, because a batter forced into a low-percentage shot will sometimes hit it well. Abandoning a good plan after two fours is the commonest error in club and professional cricket alike.
The signal is comfort. Watch where the batter is meeting the ball. If he is playing the core delivery in the middle of the bat, in front of his body, with his head still, the plan is no longer troubling him and no amount of persistence will change that. If he is playing it late, squarer than he wants, or leaving it with visible uncertainty, the plan is alive whatever the scoreboard says.
Three specific triggers are worth naming. The batter has changed his set-up, by moving across his stumps or standing outside the crease, in a way that neutralises the angle the plan depends on. The bowler has stopped landing the core delivery, so the plan is now a theory rather than an operation. Or the conditions have moved, because the ball has softened, the surface has dried or the swing has stopped, and the plan's mechanism no longer exists.
The other half of the decision is what replaces it. A bowler who abandons a plan without a second one bowls the worst overs of his day, because he is now reacting ball by ball to a batter who has just won an exchange. This is why the exit is written before the innings and why it always names the alternative.
- Is the bowler landing the core delivery?If not, the plan has not failed; the execution has. The answer is a technical reset, not a new plan.
- Is the batter uncomfortable?Judge by where and how late he is meeting the ball, not by the runs. Clean contact in front of the body is the signal that matters.
- Has the batter changed his position?Moving across the stumps or out of the crease is an explicit answer to the plan. It usually means the angle it relies on has gone.
- Have the conditions moved?Swing stopping, the ball softening or the surface drying can remove the mechanism the plan was built on, regardless of how well it is bowled.
- Is the field still the one the plan needs?Fielders quietly withdrawn to save runs cancel a plan without anybody announcing it. Reinstate the field or accept the plan is over.
- Switch to the written alternativeThe replacement was chosen in the morning. Improvising a new plan mid-over hands the initiative to a batter who has just won an exchange.
A generic decision sequence. Real decisions compress this into a few seconds between deliveries and are frequently made by the captain rather than the bowler.
The analyst's contribution, and where it stops
The analyst does not choose the plan. The analyst narrows the field of plans worth choosing between, which is a smaller claim and a more useful one.
Before a series, the work is compilation and pattern-finding: how each opposition batter has been dismissed, which deliveries he leaves, where his scoring is concentrated against each bowling type, how his method changes by phase and by ball age, and which of the apparent patterns survive being filtered by conditions. A great deal of the value is negative. Ruling out an attractive plan that has never worked saves more than proposing a new one.
During a match the role changes to monitoring. The question is no longer what to try but whether what is being tried is working, and the honest answer usually rests on process measures rather than outcomes, because outcome measures over a single spell are dominated by luck. A bowler beating the bat repeatedly and conceding runs is in a different situation from one bowling comfortably into the middle of the bat for the same figures, and the numbers exist to make that distinction visible from the balcony.
Three limits are worth stating plainly. Description is not prescription, since knowing where a batter scores does not establish that pushing him elsewhere makes him worse. Every plan is an experiment run on an opponent who responds to being experimented on, so patterns decay as soon as they are exploited. And the constraint that overrides all analysis is what this particular bowler can execute repeatedly at high heart rate, which is a coaching judgement made on a training ground rather than a finding made at a laptop.
The best working relationship is one where the analyst supplies options with their evidence attached, the bowling coach filters them by what the bowler can actually do, and the captain decides which one the field can support.
Who owns the plan when the bowler disagrees
Plans are agreed in a meeting and executed by one person under pressure, and the gap between those two facts causes most of the friction.
The bowler holds an effective veto, and he should. A plan he does not believe in will be bowled tentatively, and a tentative version of a good plan is worse than a committed version of a mediocre one. Coaches who insist on a plan against a bowler's instinct usually get four deliveries of compliance and then improvisation.
The captain holds the field, which means he holds the enforcement. He can support a plan by giving it the catchers it needs and accepting the singles that follow, or he can quietly kill it by prioritising containment. Both are legitimate decisions, and the mistake is making the second while telling the bowler the first is still on.
The coaching staff hold the preparation. A plan rehearsed in the nets as a sequence, with the recovery from a missed core delivery practised as part of it, survives contact far better than a plan explained on a whiteboard an hour before play.
The resolution most teams arrive at is to agree two plans and a switch point before the innings. That removes the argument from the middle of the over, which is the worst possible place to have it.
How to spot a bowling plan from the stands
Everything above is visible, and watching for it changes what a quiet passage of play looks like.
Start with the field before the over. Count the catchers and note where the boundary riders are. A field with two catchers behind square and nobody square on the off side is announcing that it will concede singles in exchange for an edge, and you now know what the next six balls are trying to do.
Watch for the repeated ball. Three deliveries that look identical are almost never an accident at professional level. Ask yourself what the fourth would have to be to punish a batter who has settled into the first three, and you will frequently predict it.
Watch the batter's feet rather than the bowler's hand. A batter being moved backwards by short bowling, or forward by fullness, is a batter being prepared for the opposite. The set-up is visible in weight transfer long before the wicket ball arrives.
Watch what happens after a boundary. A captain who leaves the field untouched is backing the plan. A captain who moves two fielders immediately has abandoned it, and the next over will be a different operation entirely.
