Cricket helmet safety history: from cap to neck guard

How cricket went from bare heads to a tested British Standard, why the change took a century, and what the 2013 and 2019 rules on helmets actually require.

In 1933 a Middlesex batter walked out at Lord's against a West Indian attack that had already put several county players in hospital, wearing a cap his wife had made him. It had three peaks rather than one, so that two of them covered his ears and temples, and it was lined with sponge rubber. Patsy Hendren had been carried off unconscious two years earlier after a bouncer from Harold Larwood, and he had concluded that a piece of dyed wool was not adequate equipment for the job. The reaction from the ground was amusement.

Cricket helmet safety history is the story of the ninety-odd years between that cap and a tested British Standard with a compulsory neck attachment, and of why the game took most of that time to accept an idea a single player had already worked out. Head protection in cricket did not fail on engineering grounds. It failed on cultural ones, repeatedly, and the engineering only arrived once the culture had given way.

The hundred years when a cap was the entire safety policy

Test cricket began in 1877. For a full century afterwards, the standard protective equipment above the shoulders was nothing at all.

This was not because nobody was hit. Batters were struck in the face, the temple and the jaw throughout the whole of that period, and the injury reports of the interwar and postwar decades read exactly as you would expect them to. It was because the game had built a set of beliefs about what a good player should be able to do, and those beliefs made protection look like an admission.

The first belief was technical. A batter who watched the ball properly and moved his feet properly would not be hit on the head, so being hit was evidence of a fault rather than of danger. The second was social. Cricket at the top level was played by men who had been taught that visible fear was worse than injury, and equipment that acknowledged the risk acknowledged the fear. The third was aesthetic, which sounds trivial and was not: the cap was part of what a cricketer looked like, and caps carried club and country colours that meant a great deal to the people wearing them.

Those three beliefs held even as the evidence against them accumulated, and they held longest among the people best placed to change things. Nobody who had made a career out of hooking fast bowling wanted to be the first man to concede that it could not be done safely.

Hendren's three peaks, and why nothing followed

The 1933 cap deserves more attention than it usually gets, because it was a correct solution that the game rejected.

Hendren was not a nervous player. He was known for hooking, which is precisely why his decision carried weight and precisely why it was mocked: if the best hooker in the county game thought he needed padding, the argument that technique alone was sufficient had a hole in it. The design itself anticipated much of what a modern helmet does, in that it covered the temples and the ears, the two places where a cricket ball does the most damage per unit of force.

What it lacked was any means of spreading impact. Sponge rubber under wool absorbs a certain amount of energy and then transmits the rest, and against a genuinely fast delivery the difference between that and nothing at all is smaller than it looks. The materials that make a helmet work, rigid outer shells and crushable liners, were not available in a form anyone would have put on their head in 1933.

But the reason it went nowhere was not material science. It was that no other player copied it. One man in unusual headgear is an eccentric; twenty are a change in practice. Cricket had no mechanism by which an individual innovation in safety could become a norm, because nobody was collecting the data, no governing body was issuing guidance, and the only feedback loop available was what the crowd shouted.

The injuries that should have forced the issue, and did not

Two incidents in the intervening decades are worth naming, because they show how close the game came to acting and how little happened.

In 1962 the India captain Nari Contractor was struck on the head by Charlie Griffith while batting against Barbados. He suffered a skull fracture, needed emergency surgery, and never played Test cricket again. The incident was discussed at length and produced no equipment change of any kind.

In 1975 the New Zealand tail-ender Ewen Chatfield was hit on the temple by Peter Lever at Auckland. His heart stopped on the field and he was resuscitated by the England physiotherapist Bernard Thomas. A player very nearly died in an international match, in front of a crowd, and the sport still did not reach for a helmet.

The pattern in both is instructive. Each was treated as an accident specific to the player and the delivery, rather than as evidence about a class of risk, and the response in each case was sympathy rather than policy. Cricket at that point had no concept of a safety standard, no medical committee empowered to issue one, and no expectation that governing bodies should act on injuries at all. The bouncer itself was regulated as a matter of fairness rather than safety, a distinction that survives in the Laws to this day and is unpicked in the piece on what the bouncer rule actually restricts.

A motorcycle helmet, a rebel circuit and a great deal of laughter

The break came in 1977, and it came from outside the establishment.

World Series Cricket assembled the fastest bowlers on earth, put them on pitches that were being grown in greenhouses and dropped into stadiums, and paid batters to face them at night under lights. The combination produced a level of physical risk that the players themselves regarded as different in kind from ordinary international cricket, and the response was immediate rather than gradual.

Dennis Amiss began wearing a modified motorcycle helmet. It was heavy, hot and visually absurd by the standards of the time, and he was ridiculed for it by crowds and by other players. It also worked. Within a short period several of the leading batters on the circuit were wearing something, and the ridicule stopped being effective once enough people had joined in.

What made World Series Cricket the trigger was that it had no institutional memory to defend. It was a commercial competition assembled quickly, staffed by professionals who were being paid to perform rather than to uphold anything, and it had no tradition of bare-headed batting to protect. The players who joined it were also, by definition, the ones willing to break with convention.

The first helmet in a Test match arrived less than a year later, and in the hardest possible circumstances.

On 17 March 1978 Graham Yallop batted for Australia against West Indies at Bridgetown wearing a purpose-made helmet, facing an attack that included Andy Roberts, Joel Garner and Colin Croft. He was booed for it. The reasoning behind the choice was not complicated: the bowling he was about to face was as fast as anything in the sport, and the alternative was a cloth cap.

Yallop's helmet is the pivot of the whole story, because it moved the innovation from a rebel competition into the official game. Once it had happened in a Test, the question for every other batter changed from whether to be the first to whether to be the last.

Adoption was still not instant. Some players held out for years, and Viv Richards famously batted through a career of the highest quality without ever wearing one, which gave the traditionalist position a figurehead it did not deserve. But within a decade the helmet had gone from a curiosity to standard equipment, and by the 1990s a bare-headed batter facing genuine pace at international level had become rare.

From motorcycle shell to cricket helmet

The design problem cricket had to solve was not the same as the one motorcycling had already solved, and the differences explain almost every feature of a modern helmet.

A motorcycle helmet is built for a single very large impact spread across a wide area, and it prioritises full enclosure. A cricket helmet is built for a comparatively small, extremely dense object arriving at speed at an unpredictable angle, and it has to leave the wearer able to see a ball leave a hand seventy feet away, hear a call for a run, and turn his head sharply without the helmet lagging. Full enclosure is not available.

The result is a shell over the cranium, a fixed or adjustable grille in front of the face, and an open gap between them. That gap is where the design tension lives. Widen it and the batter sees better but is exposed. Narrow it and the sight lines suffer, which in a sport where the ball must be picked up early is a safety issue of its own.

Shell materials moved from fibreglass to ABS and then to composites including carbon fibre, with high-density foam liners doing the energy absorption. Grilles moved from fixed steel to titanium and, importantly, to designs where the grille is fixed rigidly to the shell rather than floating on adjustable brackets. Floating grilles were popular because they let each player set his own gap, and they turned out to be a significant part of the problem, because the gap could move on impact.

Helmets for fielders and keepers arrived separately

Head protection for batters is only half the story, and the other half followed a different logic.

Fielders close to the bat, at short leg and silly point, are exposed to a ball hit hard from a few metres away with no time to react. The protective equipment they wear now, a helmet with a grille plus shin and instep guards, became normal through the 1980s and 1990s, and its adoption met much less resistance than batting helmets did, largely because nobody had built an identity around fielding at short leg without protection.

The stakes there are not hypothetical. In 1998 the former India batter Raman Lamba was fielding at forward short leg in a club match in Dhaka without a helmet when he was struck on the head, and he died of his injuries. That incident hardened attitudes considerably in the region and beyond.

Wicketkeepers standing up to the stumps face a different hazard: deflections and top edges from very close range, plus the specific risk of the bails. Mark Boucher's career ended in 2012 when a bail struck him in the eye while he was keeping without a helmet. Keepers standing up are now required to wear head protection in most organised competitions, which is one of the more recent changes and one of the least argued about. The Laws had to catch up with the equipment

Once helmets were universal, the Laws had to decide what a helmet is for the purposes of the game, and the answers took some working out.

The first question was what happens when the ball hits a spare helmet lying on the ground. Fielding sides park them behind the wicketkeeper, and the Law now says that a helmet not in use may only be placed on the ground in that position, in line with both sets of stumps. If the ball in play strikes it, the ball becomes dead immediately and five penalty runs are awarded to the batting side. That is a deterrent rather than a compensation, and it is why you occasionally see a keeper sprinting to move one.

The second question was harder. If the ball rebounds off a helmet being worn by a fielder, is it still in play? For most of the helmet era the answer was no. The 2017 Code changed it: a catch is now valid if the ball has struck a fielder's or the wicketkeeper's worn helmet on the way, on the reasoning that a rebound is as likely to hurt the fielding side as to help it. That is a small change with a large consequence at short leg, where deflections off the helmet are common.

2013: cricket finally gets a standard, and the gap it was built to close

For thirty-five years, cricket helmets were sold and worn without any published specification that a manufacturer had to meet. A helmet was whatever a company said it was.

BS 7928 changed that in 2013. It is a British Standard specifying materials, construction, marking and the information that must be supplied for head protectors used in adult and junior cricket, and it defines the tests a product has to pass. The most consequential of those is a facial contact projectile test, which fires a ball at the faceguard at realistic match speeds and checks two things: whether the ball can penetrate the guard, and whether the guard is pushed back far enough to contact the face.

That test was written to close a specific and well-documented failure. In 2014 two English players were injured by balls that went through the gap between grille and peak rather than through the shell. Craig Kieswetter was struck in the face while batting against Northamptonshire, sustaining a broken nose and a damaged eye socket, and the effects of the injury ended his career at 27. Weeks later Stuart Broad had his nose fractured at Old Trafford by a ball from Varun Aaron that squeezed between the grille and the visor.

Neither man was wearing inadequate equipment by the standards of the day. That was the point. The failure mode was in the design category rather than in any individual helmet, and it could only be fixed by a test that every product had to pass. The physics behind it is unforgiving: a cricket ball is dense and hardly deforms, so a gap slightly narrower than the ball is not a safe gap once the impact is off-centre and the ball can wedge. Phillip Hughes was batting for South Australia in a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground when he was struck at the top of the neck by a short delivery. He collapsed on the pitch, and he died two days later.

The 2016 inquest by the New South Wales State Coroner set out the mechanism with unusual clarity. The blow caused a vertebral artery dissection, and the resulting bleed into the brain was the cause of death. The most likely mechanism of the arterial tear was the violent movement of the skull relative to the cervical spine at the moment of impact.

Two findings from that inquest are routinely misreported and both matter. Hughes was wearing a Masuri original series helmet of a model manufactured between 2005 and 2013, which was not the most current design available and was not required to be. But the coroner also found that even the most modern equipment then on sale would not have protected the area where the fatal blow landed, because no helmet on the market covered it. The inquest additionally found no malice in the bowling, no failure by the umpires to enforce the Laws, and described the death as a tragic accident.

The recommendations were narrow and consequential. The coroner urged that neck protection on batting helmets be made mandatory, and recommended a review of the laws on dangerous and unfair bowling to remove ambiguity in how they are applied.

Neck protectors and the 2019 amendment

The equipment answer arrived first, in the form of clip-on guards attached to the rear of the helmet shell to cover the base of the skull and the upper neck. Prototypes were in use within months of Hughes' death, and early versions were criticised by players for catching on the shoulders, restricting head movement and making an already hot piece of equipment hotter.

The standard caught up in 2019. BS 7928:2013 was amended to BS 7928:2013+A1:2019, which added specifications for neck protectors covering coverage area and impact attenuation, aimed specifically at the region the coroner had identified. That amendment is what turned a well-intentioned accessory into a tested component.

Mandates followed board by board rather than globally, which is why the picture is still uneven. The ECB made neck protectors compulsory for batting and close fielding in its competitions from October 2022. Cricket Australia requires them for batters facing fast and medium-pace bowling in its sanctioned competitions. The ICC's own regulation is narrower than people assume: it does not compel a player to wear a helmet in international cricket at all, but requires that any helmet worn complies with BS 7928. The compulsion, where it exists, comes from national boards and domestic playing conditions rather than from the international governing body.

Concussion moved the problem from equipment to process

The other half of the post-2014 response had nothing to do with what a player wears.

Cricket adopted a formal head injury assessment, taking a player off the field for evaluation after a blow to the head rather than leaving the decision to the batter, who is the person least able to make it. The sport had a long tradition of players continuing after being hit, and unpicking that required removing the choice.

The ICC approved concussion replacements for all formats of international and first-class cricket in July 2019, with effect from 1 August. The regulation is unusual in that the substitute is a full participant, allowed to bat and to bowl, which is what distinguishes it from an ordinary substitute fielder. It was first used in a Test at Lord's later that month, when Marnus Labuschagne replaced Steve Smith after Smith was struck on the neck.

The design intent is straightforward. If a side loses a player outright for the rest of a match by taking him off, the pressure to keep him on will always win. Making the replacement like-for-like removes the competitive cost of doing the right thing, which is the same logic that underpins the head injury assessment protocol in rugby. Cricket adopted the principle later than several contact sports and, having adopted it, applies it more consistently than the state of the evidence in 2014 would have suggested.

What happens now when a batter is struck on the head
  1. The player is struckPlay stops and the medical staff come on. The decision to continue is no longer the player's to make on the spot, which is the central change from the pre-2014 game.
  2. A head injury assessment is carried outThe player is evaluated for concussion signs and symptoms. Where the assessment cannot be completed safely on the field, he leaves it, and doubt is resolved in favour of removal.
  3. A concussion replacement is requested if neededThe team applies to the match referee for a like-for-like replacement. Approval is the referee's, not the team's, and the criterion is that the substitute should not give the side an advantage.
  4. The replacement plays a full partUnlike an ordinary substitute, a concussion replacement may bat and bowl. Removing the competitive cost of taking a player off is the point of the regulation.
  5. Return to play is staged, not immediateGraduated return-to-play protocols govern when a concussed player trains and plays again. The equipment reduces the chance of the blow; the protocol governs what happens after one lands.

Junior and club cricket, where the rules bite hardest

The strictest helmet rules in the sport are not at international level. They are in age-group and recreational cricket, and that inversion is deliberate.

Most national boards require compliant helmets for young players batting against hard balls, keeping up to the stumps and fielding close to the bat, with no opt-out available to the player or the parent. The reasoning is that children have proportionally larger heads, less developed necks, and much less capacity to judge and evade a short ball, and that the adults responsible for them should not be relying on a twelve-year-old's assessment of risk.

Fit is the recurring problem at that level, because a growing player outgrows a helmet quickly and a loose helmet is a serious hazard rather than a minor inconvenience. A helmet that rotates on impact exposes the area it was bought to cover, and the standard's requirements on retention systems exist for exactly that reason. Club cricket's other chronic issue is the shared kit bag, where a set of communal helmets of unknown age and unknown compliance sits in a corner, and where the sensible policy of insisting on personal equipment collides with the cost of buying it.

The helmet changed how batting works

Protective equipment does not sit outside the game it protects. It alters what players attempt, and the helmet altered a great deal.

Before it, the orthodox response to a ball at the head was to get out of the way, and the players who hooked were doing something visibly dangerous that they had chosen to accept. After it, the risk-reward calculation on every short ball shifted, because the cost of misjudging one fell from a fractured cheekbone to a loud noise and a bruise. Pull and hook shots became a normal part of a batter's range rather than a specialist's gamble, and the willingness to stay leg side of the ball and swing at chest height is a direct consequence.

The shots that came later, the ramps and the scoops played to fast bowling with the head inside the line of the ball, are barely conceivable without head protection. A batter who plays those is deliberately putting his face in the path of a delivery he intends to deflect, and no bare-headed player would attempt it twice.

Bowling adapted in turn. Short-pitched bowling as a tactic became less about intimidation and more about creating a false shot, since a batter who is not frightened has to be tempted instead. Whether the net effect on the number of head impacts is positive or negative is genuinely unclear, and it is one of the reasons the regulation of short-pitched bowling has kept moving alongside the equipment.

What is still unsolved

Three problems remain open, and it is worth being honest about them.

The first is that no helmet protects the whole head and neck, and none can. Coverage is bounded by the need to see and hear, and the region where Hughes was struck sits at the edge of what any design can reach without immobilising the wearer. Neck protectors have reduced the exposure rather than eliminated it.

The second is compliance behaviour. Standards apply to equipment sold, not to how it is worn, and a compliant helmet fitted badly, worn with the grille adjusted beyond its tested position, or kept in service for a decade after an impact, is not the product that was tested. Manufacturers specify replacement after significant impacts and after a period of years, and that guidance is followed unevenly.

The third is the tension the whole subject sits on. Better protection makes batters more willing to take on short bowling, which increases the number of impacts even as it reduces the consequence of each. That effect is well documented in other sports and there is no reason to think cricket is exempt. It is not an argument against helmets, but it is a reason to treat the rules on short-pitched bowling as part of the same safety system rather than a separate one.

How to look at a cricket helmet

Four things are worth noticing, whether you are watching a Test or buying kit for a child.

Check for the standard marking. A helmet made for serious cricket carries a mark referencing BS 7928, and since 2019 a neck protector sold with it should reference the amended version. Equipment without a marking has not been tested against anything.

Look at the gap between grille and peak. It should be narrower than a cricket ball and it should not move. Grilles that adjust on brackets were the source of the failures the 2013 standard was written to stop, and fixed grilles are the modern answer.

Watch whether the helmet moves when the player does. A helmet that shifts when a batter turns his head sharply, or rocks when he ducks, is not fitted correctly, and fit does more for safety than any amount of shell material.

Notice the back of the head. The clip-on guard at the base of the skull is the most recent addition and the most directly traceable to a specific death. When you see one, you are looking at a piece of equipment that exists because of an inquest.

Ninety years separate a wool cap with three peaks from a carbon shell with a tested faceguard and a neck attachment, and almost all of that time was spent not on the engineering but on persuading a sport that the risk was real. Common questions

When did cricketers start wearing helmets?

Isolated head protection appeared much earlier, but the modern helmet dates from the late 1970s.
