Cricket scoring explained: how a scorebook is kept
How cricket scoring works in practice: the scorer's duties under the Laws, the symbol for every delivery, where extras are written, and how two scorers agree.

Two people sit at a table behind the boundary with a hardback book open between them, and for long stretches neither of them watches the ball land. They watch the bowler's arm, then the umpire's arms, then the page. That habit is the whole job in miniature, and it is the first thing that separates cricket scoring from following the game with a pen. A scorer is not producing a summary. A scorer is producing a legal record of what happened, delivery by delivery, in a notation compact enough to keep up with the play and precise enough to be rebuilt afterwards by someone who was not there.
Cricket scoring, explained from the inside, is a clerical discipline with three parts: a notation for recording each ball, a set of columns that must agree with one another, and a second person whose entire purpose is to disagree with you if you have got it wrong. The finished scorecard that appears on a website is the output. Everything below is the machine that produced it.

What the Laws require of a scorer
The scorer is an official, not a volunteer with a clipboard, and the Laws say so directly. Law 3 provides for two scorers to be appointed to record all runs scored, all wickets taken and, where the format calls for it, the number of overs bowled. That is the entire positive duty, and it is deliberately short.
Two further obligations sit underneath it and matter more in practice than the first.
The first is acknowledgement. Every signal an umpire makes to the scorers must be accepted and promptly acknowledged, which in the middle usually means a raised hand from the scorebox and, at club level, whatever gesture the two of you have agreed will be visible from ninety yards away. The umpire will hold the signal until it is answered. This is not ceremony. A boundary signalled and not acknowledged is a boundary the umpire cannot assume has been recorded, and an umpire who is unsure will repeat the signal rather than let the innings continue on a guess.
The second is consultation. The scorers are required to check the correctness of the score with the umpires at every interval and at the end of the match. That single sentence is why the intervals in cricket are not just breaks for the players. Tea is when the two books, and the umpires' own count of the overs, are placed alongside each other and forced to agree.
What the Laws do not do is prescribe a notation. There is no legally required symbol for a leg bye and no legally required layout for a page. The conventions below are the ones taught by officiating associations and printed into commercial scorebooks, and they are close to universal in the English-speaking game without being law. Scorebook publishers differ in small ways, and a scorer picking up an unfamiliar book checks its key before the first ball rather than assuming.

The two shapes of a scorebook: the box and the linear sheet
Before any symbol goes down, the scorer has chosen a layout, and the choice changes what the record can later be asked to do.
The box scorebook is the familiar hardback. It gives each innings a double-page spread. On the left sits the batting section, one row per batter, with a wide field of small boxes in which that batter's runs are ticked off one at a time. Down the right or across the bottom sits the bowling analysis, one row per bowler, divided into over boxes. Extras get their own strip, the fall of wickets gets a line, and a running total column crawls down the edge of the page.
Box scoring is compact, it fits on a table, and it has served the game for well over a century. Its weakness is chronology. A box book records what each participant did, but reconstructing the exact sequence of an over from it takes work, and reconstructing the sequence of a whole passage of play takes a great deal of work.
The linear scoresheet solves that by inverting the page. Every delivery gets its own row, running from the top of the sheet to the bottom in the order the deliveries were bowled. Each row carries the ball number, the bowler, the striker, what happened, and the score after it. A linear sheet is longer, uses more paper and demands more writing per ball, but any passage of the innings can be read straight off it like a transcript.
The professional game leans linear, and so does every piece of scoring software ever written, because a list of deliveries in order is the natural internal shape of the data. An electronic system that presents you with a box-style grid on screen is drawing that grid from a linear list underneath. Understanding this makes the later sections about data entry considerably less mysterious: the software is not doing something exotic, it is keeping a linear sheet very quickly and rendering the box view for free.
The batting side of the book, box by box
Each batter occupies a row. The row begins with the name and, at professional level, the batting position, and then opens into the scoring boxes.
The scorer fills those boxes one run at a time as the innings goes on, and the convention is to record the value of each scoring shot in the next free box rather than to keep a running total in the row. A batter who has hit a single, a two, a four and another single has four boxes filled, reading 1, 2, 4, 1. The row is therefore a record of scoring shots in order, not just a quantity, and it is the reason a scorer can tell you afterwards how a batter reached a score rather than only what the score was.
Dot balls are not written in the batting row. They are recorded on the bowling side, in the bowler's over box, because a dot ball is an event that belongs to the bowler's analysis. This is one of the small asymmetries that confuses people learning to score: the batting row holds runs, and the bowling grid holds deliveries. Balls faced by a batter are counted from the bowling grid or, in a linear sheet, straight off the rows, rather than tallied in the batting section.
When the batter is out, the scorer writes the dismissal into the row, and the notation is the same shorthand that ends up on the finished card. That shorthand, and the difference between what each form of it credits, is set out in detail in the guide to the completed scorecard, so it is enough here to say that the scorer writes the method, the catcher where there is one, and the bowler where the bowler is credited, and does it immediately rather than at the end of the over.
Two other things go into the batting section as the innings runs. The count of fours and the count of sixes are usually kept as separate small tallies, because they are needed for the finished card and cannot be recovered from a total. And the time or the over at which each batter came in and went out is recorded, which is what allows a partnership to be reconstructed later.
The bowling analysis grid, and why one box holds one over
The bowling section gives each bowler a row and divides that row into boxes, one box per over. Inside a box, the scorer records every delivery of that over in sequence.
That is the structural fact worth holding on to: a box is an over, and an over is six legal deliveries, so a box that ends up with eight marks in it is telling you two of them were not legal. The visual bulk of an over box is itself information. A tidy box with six dots is a maiden. A crowded box is an expensive over, an over with extras in it, or both.
At the end of each over the scorer closes the box off, adds up the runs charged to the bowler in it, and carries that figure into the bowler's cumulative runs conceded. Overs bowled, maidens, runs and wickets are the four columns the bowler's row is building towards, and each of them is a running total updated once per over rather than once per ball. Working over by over rather than ball by ball is what makes the arithmetic survivable at pace.
Because the bowlers alternate ends, consecutive boxes in a single bowler's row are not consecutive overs of the innings. The scorer therefore numbers the overs of the innings independently, and it is the over number, not the position in the row, that anchors everything else. A fall of wicket, a drinks break, a change of ball and a rain interruption are all logged against the over number of the innings.
Recording a single delivery: the symbol set
Here is the core notation. These are the conventions taught to club scorers in England and used, with small local variations, across most of the game.
- A dot ball is a full stop in the bowler's over box. Nothing else moves anywhere.
- Runs off the bat are written as the numeral in the over box, and the same numeral goes into the striker's next free batting box. Two entries, one delivery.
- A boundary four is a 4, and a separate tally of fours is incremented in the batting section.
- A six is a 6, with its own tally.
- A wide is a cross. Any further runs run off it are shown by placing a dot in each quadrant of the cross, so a cross with two dots in it is three wides in total.
- A no ball is a circle. Runs scored off the bat from a no ball are written inside the circle, and those runs also go into the batter's row.
- A bye is commonly shown as a triangle, a leg bye as an inverted triangle, with the number of runs written inside or beside it. Publishers differ here more than anywhere else in the notation, and some books simply use B and LB.
- A wicket is a W, and some scorers use a diagonal cross instead, which is why the key at the front of the book is worth reading.
The design principle behind all of it is speed under load. Every symbol can be drawn in one movement without lifting the pen more than once, and every symbol is distinguishable from every other at a glance and upside down, because the second scorer will sometimes be reading your book from the wrong side of the table.
Where byes and leg byes are written, and why they sit outside the bowler's box
The attribution rule is simple to state and generates most of the questions scorers get asked. Runs the bowler is responsible for go into the bowler's runs conceded. Runs the bowler is not responsible for go into the team total and into the extras block, and the bowler's column is left untouched.
Byes and leg byes fall on the second side of that line. The delivery was legal, so it counts as one of the six and the over advances. The batter faced it, so balls faced advances. But nobody's batting row moves, because no batter earned the runs, and the bowler's runs conceded does not move either, because the runs came from a delivery the bowler had already got past the bat.
For the scorer this produces a specific mechanical habit. A bye is recorded in two places and only two: the over box, where the symbol occupies one of the six slots, and the extras block, where the runs accumulate. The team total column moves. Four separate columns that would move for a boundary off the bat do not move at all.
The consequence that surprises people is that an over containing byes can still be a maiden. The bowler conceded nothing, so the maiden stands, and a scorer who reflexively cancels the maiden because the total went up has made an attribution error rather than an arithmetic one. Attribution errors are the ones that survive reconciliation, because the totals still add up.

What matters at the book is that the scorer must decide the category before writing anything, because the symbol encodes the attribution and there is no way to write a run down neutrally and sort it out later.
Wides and no balls: the two symbols that make an over longer
These two are the reason a scorer counts deliveries rather than trusting the over to end on its own.
A wide is not a legal delivery. The scorer draws the cross, adds the run or runs to extras and to the bowler's runs conceded, and does not tick off one of the six. The bowler has to bowl again. In a tight white-ball over a scorer can find the box holding nine or ten marks, and the discipline of counting legal deliveries inside the box, rather than counting marks, is what keeps the over from being closed early.
A no ball behaves differently in one important respect: the batter faced something. The scorer draws the circle, charges one run to the bowler as the penalty, does not tick off a legal delivery, and increments the striker's balls faced. Runs hit off a no ball go inside the circle and into the batter's row, and they are charged to the bowler on top of the penalty. Runs that come off a no ball without touching the bat are, under the Laws, recorded as no balls rather than as byes, and are charged to the bowler as well, though publishers and scoring systems present that in slightly different ways and a scorer working to a competition's format checks which convention it expects.
Both symbols destroy a maiden, because both put runs into the bowler's column. Both extend the over. Both mean the scorer's internal count of legal deliveries and the umpire's count must be compared, which is why an umpire will often glance at the box between balls in a messy over, and why a scorer who has lost count says so immediately rather than guessing.
Recording a wicket, and the three entries it triggers
A wicket is the busiest single event in the book, because it lands in more places than anything else.
The scorer writes W in the bowler's over box, closing that delivery. The dismissal notation goes into the outgoing batter's row along with the final runs and balls figures. The wicket count in the bowler's row goes up by one, if the bowler is credited with it, which run outs and a handful of other methods do not. And a new line goes onto the fall of wickets record: the wicket number, the team score at the moment of the dismissal, the batter dismissed, and the over.
That fall of wickets line is the piece most likely to be skipped under pressure and the piece most expensive to reconstruct later. It is the only record of the score at an instant rather than at the end of an over, and every partnership figure in the finished card is derived from it by subtraction. A scorer who writes the score after the next ball rather than at the dismissal introduces an error that nothing downstream will catch.
The new batter's row is opened straight away with the arrival time or over, and the scorer confirms which end the new batter has taken, because a wicket falling to the last ball of an over, or a batter crossing before a catch is completed, changes who is on strike and therefore whose balls faced advances for the rest of the over.
- Watch the bowler's arm, not the ballThe scorer's eye starts at the crease so that a no ball call or a wide call is seen as it is made. The outcome of the shot can be picked up afterwards; a call cannot.
- Check the umpire for a signalIf a signal is given, hold it in mind and acknowledge it before writing. An unacknowledged signal will be repeated, and a repeated signal costs more time than the acknowledgement did.
- Decide the category before the pen movesRuns off the bat, bye, leg bye, wide, no ball or penalty. The symbol encodes the decision, so the decision has to come first and cannot be deferred.
- Write the over box entryA 2 goes into the bowler's current over box. One of the six legal deliveries is now accounted for, and the count of balls left in the over drops.
- Write the batting row entryThe same 2 goes into the striker's next free scoring box. The batting row now shows the shape of the innings, not just its size.
- Advance the running totalThe team total column moves by two. On a linear sheet this is the last field in the row; in a box book it is the narrow column at the edge of the page.
- Confirm the strikeTwo runs means the batters are back where they started. An odd number means the striker changes, and getting this wrong misallocates every ball faced until the end of the over.
The sequence for a single ball hit for two runs with no extras involved. A ball that produces an extra, a wicket or a boundary adds entries rather than replacing them.
The four reconciliations a scorer runs without being asked
The book contains several independent routes to the same numbers, and a good scorer is constantly testing them against each other rather than waiting for an interval to find out.
Runs. The sum of the batting rows, plus the extras block, must equal the running total. This is the check people know about, and it catches arithmetic slips and missed entries. It does not catch attribution errors, because a bye recorded as a leg bye leaves both sides of the equation identical.
Deliveries. The number of legal deliveries recorded in the bowling grid, converted to overs and balls, must match the innings over count. Separately, the sum of every batter's balls faced must equal the number of legal deliveries plus the number of no balls, because a no ball is faced but is not legal. This second identity is the one that catches a mislaid strike rotation.
Bowlers' runs. The sum of the runs conceded column across all bowlers, plus byes, plus leg byes, plus penalty runs, must equal the team total. Any gap here is an attribution error, and this is the check that finds them. A scorer who runs only the first reconciliation will sail through an innings with a bowler's analysis that is quietly wrong.
Wickets. The number of W entries in the bowling grid, plus run outs and other dismissals not credited to a bowler, must equal the number of lines on the fall of wickets record, and must equal the wickets shown on the total.
Running these four at the end of every over is impractical. Running the first at the end of every over, the second at drinks and all four at every interval is the working compromise most scorers settle into, and it maps neatly onto the consultation the Laws require at each break.
Why there are two scorers, and how they cross-check each other
Two scorers is not redundancy for the sake of it. It is error detection by independent duplication, and it only works if the two books are genuinely independent for the duration of an over.
The working protocol is straightforward. Both scorers record the over as it happens without consulting each other. At the end of the over, one of them calls the three headline figures aloud: the total, the wickets and the number of overs completed. If both books agree on all three, the over is closed and the next one begins. If they do not, the disagreement is resolved before the next ball, because a discrepancy carried forward compounds.
Resolving it means finding the delivery where the books diverge. With a linear sheet this is quick, because the two sheets can be read side by side row by row until the rows stop matching. With box books it is slower, and the usual method is to work back from the last point at which both scorers are certain they agreed, which is why calling the figures every over matters so much: it establishes a known good point no more than six balls behind.
Where the two scorers cannot agree, the umpires are the arbiter, because the umpires' record of the overs and their memory of the signals they gave outrank both books. A scorer who has recorded something the umpire did not signal has recorded an opinion, not a fact.
At professional level the pairing is often one scorer on the electronic system and one on paper, which gives the cross-check an extra property: the two records fail in different ways. Software does not miscount an over, but it will happily record a leg bye as a bye if the operator presses the wrong key, and the paper book will not lose an innings when a tablet battery dies.
The signal loop between umpire and scorer
The umpire's signals to the scorers are the formal channel through which everything that is not obvious reaches the book, and the loop has three steps rather than one.
The umpire waits until the ball is dead, faces the scorers, and gives the signal. The scorer acknowledges. The umpire, having seen the acknowledgement, allows play to continue. If several signals are needed for one delivery, they are given in sequence and each is acknowledged separately, which is why a complicated delivery can hold play up for a surprising length of time.
The signals that matter most to the record are the ones the scorer could not have inferred from watching. A four and a six are obvious from the boundary. Byes, leg byes, wides, no balls, penalty runs, a short run being disallowed and a boundary being awarded rather than run are not obvious, or are actively ambiguous, and the book depends entirely on the signal. One habit separates experienced scorers from new ones. When a signal is unclear, or when it arrives faster than the scorer can classify it, the correct response is to hold the acknowledgement rather than give it. An unacknowledged signal will be repeated. An acknowledged signal that was misread becomes a permanent error in the record with nothing to flag it.
Electronic scoring and the ball-by-ball data entry
The professional record is now built on software, and understanding what the operator is actually doing removes most of the mystery from live data.
The scorer works ball by ball. For each delivery the system wants, at minimum, the bowler, the striker, the non-striker, the outcome as a category, and the runs attached to it. That is the same set of decisions the paper scorer makes, presented as buttons instead of symbols. Richer systems ask for more per ball: the delivery type, the shot played, the direction the ball went, the fielder who stopped it, whether the ball beat the bat. Those extra fields are optional for the score and mandatory for the analysis, which is why the level of detail varies enormously between a club league and an international.
Everything downstream is generated from that stream rather than entered separately. The live scoreboard, the broadcast graphics, the over-by-over commentary line, the manhattan and worm graphics, the wagon wheel, the bowler's spell breakdown and the finished card are all views over the same list of deliveries. This is also the raw material behind the analytics work described in how cricket teams use data, and it is worth being blunt about the implication: the quality ceiling of every downstream number is set by the person pressing the buttons.
Two failure modes are specific to electronic scoring and worth knowing about.
The first is the correction problem. A paper scorer who makes an error writes a neat amendment and initials it. An operator who makes an error has to walk the system back to the delivery in question, which on some systems means undoing everything since. The temptation to leave a small error in place rather than unwind two overs of entries is real, and it is why the paper book alongside is not sentimentality.
The second is that the software's own validation can create false confidence. A system that will not let the total disagree with the sum of its parts has eliminated arithmetic errors and eliminated nothing else. Attribution errors, wrong-striker errors and missed extras all pass validation cleanly, because they are internally consistent. The reconciliations that catch those still have to be run by a person.
From the book to the official record
At the end of the innings the scorers close the book, run the full set of reconciliations, and agree the innings totals with each other and with the umpires. At the end of the match the same thing happens for the match as a whole, and the result itself is confirmed rather than assumed: the scorers state the result, the umpires agree it, and only then is it a result.
That last step is not a formality, and it is the one place where scoring stops being clerical and becomes consequential. A match that finishes on the last ball, a chase that ends level, a side bowled out with a batter absent hurt, a target revised for rain: in each of those the arithmetic that decides the outcome lives in the scorers' books, and the umpires' decision on the result is taken with the scorers' figures in front of them.
The signed sheet or the closed book then becomes the document the competition files. At club level it is typically submitted to the league within a set window, and the league's tables, averages and any playing sanctions are built from it. At professional level the electronic record is submitted to the competition's system, from which it reaches the statistical archives, the players' career figures and the public scorecard. A career average is nothing more than the accumulated output of thousands of these submissions, which is why the vocabulary in the cricket statistics glossary ultimately traces back to a pen and a box.
Corrections after submission are possible and are treated seriously, because a changed scorecard changes career records. The usual route is a request from the scorers or the competition, supported by the ball-by-ball record, and it is settled by whoever administers the archive rather than by the scorer alone.
What good scoring looks like from the boundary
You can judge a scorebox from outside it, and the signals are not subtle.
Watch the acknowledgement. A scorer who answers every signal promptly, including the ones that come in quick succession after a scrambled delivery, is on top of the book. A scorer who has to be signalled twice is behind.
Watch the end of the over. If the two scorers exchange figures every over without being prompted, the record will survive a long innings. If the first comparison happens at drinks, the first discrepancy will take twenty minutes to find.
Watch what happens after an unusual event. A five-run penalty, a batter retiring hurt, an over completed by a second bowler after an injury, a boundary that comes off a helmet: these are the moments that break records, and the tell is whether the scorers stop and talk to each other before the next ball is bowled. Stopping is right. Play catching up with an unresolved entry is how an innings ends with two books that cannot be reconciled.
And watch the interval. The scorers walking out to meet the umpires at tea, book in hand, are doing exactly what Law 3 asks of them, and the fact that the game builds that consultation into its own timetable tells you how seriously it takes the record. The Laws every follower of the game should know put the scorers in the third Law, ahead of the ball, the bat and the pitch, which is not an accident of numbering.

What does a cricket scorer actually do?
A scorer records every delivery, every run and every wicket in a form that can be checked afterwards, and acknowledges each umpire signal so the umpires know the instruction has been received. The job is not passive transcription: the scorer maintains several parallel columns that must agree with one another, and spends much of the innings confirming that they still do. Two scorers are appointed so that each one's book can be tested against the other's.
How do you record a wide in a scorebook?
The common convention is a cross in the bowler's over box, with a dot placed in each quadrant of the cross for any further run the batters take off it.
