Football pitch dimensions and the rules that set them

What the Laws of the Game permit, what UEFA and domestic competitions demand, every fixed marking on the field, and how pitch size shapes play.

A groundsman walks a touchline at half past seven in the morning with a wheel and a can of white paint, and the first thing he confirms is not the state of the grass. It is a distance. The lines he lays down today have to sit exactly where they sat for the previous home match, because those numbers were declared before the season started and they are not his to move.

Football pitch dimensions rules come in two layers, and nearly all the public confusion comes from mixing the layers up. The Laws of the Game, written by the International Football Association Board, permit a wide range: a touchline of 90 to 120 metres and a goal line of 45 to 90 metres for ordinary matches, tightened to 100 to 110 metres by 64 to 75 metres for international fixtures. On top of that, individual competitions impose their own far narrower requirement, and at the senior professional level that requirement has converged on a single pair of numbers, 105 metres by 68 metres.

So the accurate answer to how big a football pitch is has two halves. The Laws allow a great deal of variation. The competitions have quietly abolished most of it.

Everything else on the field, by contrast, is nailed down and identical everywhere. The goal, the penalty mark, the penalty area, the goal area, the centre circle and the corner arc do not scale with the pitch. A goal on a village recreation ground is exactly as wide as a goal in a European final, and a penalty is taken from the same distance in both.

Fixed specifications from Law 1. These are identical at every level of the game and do not vary with pitch size.

One document governs football from a school field to a World Cup final. That is the constraint IFAB works under, and it explains almost every apparent looseness in Law 1.

A sport that fixed its playing area to the centimetre would be a sport that could not be played in most of the places it is actually played. Cricket takes a similar approach for the same reason and lets boundary distances vary within limits, which is part of why pitch and ground conditions carry so much weight in that sport. Football went further and left the whole outer rectangle flexible, then bolted the interior down.

Only two structural requirements survive at every level. The field must be rectangular, and the touchline must be longer than the goal line. That second clause quietly outlaws a square field, which the numeric ranges on their own would otherwise permit at the point where they overlap.

The dual measurement system is a second piece of history. Law 1 gives every distance in metres and in imperial units, and the imperial figures are the originals. Eight yards between the posts, eight feet to the crossbar, twelve yards to the penalty spot, eighteen yards to the edge of the penalty area, ten yards for the defensive wall. The metric equivalents are conversions, which is why they arrive with awkward decimals attached. Nobody sat down and chose 7.32 metres. Somebody chose eight yards, and 7.32 is what eight yards is.

That matters for reading old material and for understanding why English commentary still says the eighteen-yard box and the six-yard box when the lines are marked in metres.

What competition rules do to the range, and why 105 by 68 won

UEFA's stadium infrastructure requirements are the clearest illustration of the second layer. They sort grounds into categories, and the field of play requirement rises with the category.

For the lower two categories, the permitted field is 100 to 105 metres long and 64 to 68 metres wide. That is already a fraction of the Law 1 range. For the higher two categories, the ones that host the later rounds of major European competition, the field must measure 105 metres by 68 metres, with no range at all. Those higher categories also carry infrastructure obligations that follow from the pitch itself: an automated under-soil irrigation system, and pitch heating or a pitch cover depending on where the ground is and what its winter does.

Domestic competitions have followed the same path. The Premier League's handbook sets 105 by 68 as the standard, with a permitted allowance for grounds whose physical footprint cannot deliver it. The practical effect is that most top-flight English pitches are identical and a handful of older grounds sit slightly inside the standard.

Two forces pushed the game towards one number. The first is broadcast. Camera positions, graphics overlays, offside line rendering and the tracking systems that generate positional data all calibrate against a known rectangle, and the data products built on top of that tracking are easier to compare across grounds when the grounds are the same size. The second is competitive fairness in knockout football. Two legs on pitches of materially different size hand one side a rehearsal advantage that has nothing to do with football.

The lines themselves: width, ownership and what counts as inside

Every boundary line belongs to the area it encloses. The touchline is part of the field of play, the goal line is part of the field of play, and the lines of the penalty area are part of the penalty area. This is not pedantry. It decides whether a ball has left the field, whether a foul was committed inside the box, and whether a handball offence sits in the area or just outside it.

A ball is only out of play when the whole of it has passed completely over the outside edge of the line, on the ground or in the air. A ball resting on the paint is still in play. That single sentence is the origin of most touchline disputes and of the entire technical case for goal-line technology, which exists to answer the same question at the one place on the field where a human eye cannot reliably answer it.

Lines must be no more than 12 centimetres wide, and all of them must be the same width. They must be distinctive, and they must be continuous rather than broken or dotted. On a UEFA field, no lines other than football lines may be visible, which rules out the shared grounds and multi-sport markings that are commonplace at lower levels.

There is one deliberate exception to the uniform width rule. The goal lines must be the same width as the goalposts and the crossbar, so that the line and the frame sit in a single plane. If a post is 12 centimetres wide, the goal line under it is 12 centimetres wide.

The halfway line runs between the midpoints of the two touchlines, with a centre mark on it and a circle of 9.15 metres radius drawn around that mark. The circle is not a zone. It exists to hold opponents back at a kick-off and does nothing at any other moment in the match.

The penalty area, the goal area and the arc people misread

Two rectangles sit in front of each goal, and both are defined by measuring outwards from the inside of the goalposts rather than from the centre or the corners.

The goal area is drawn by taking two lines at right angles to the goal line, 5.5 metres from the inside of each post, running them 5.5 metres into the field and joining them. It is the box from which goal kicks are taken, and it defines where a free kick to the defending side inside its own goal area may be placed and where a dropped ball is restarted when play stopped inside it.

The penalty area uses the same construction with a larger number. Lines 16.5 metres from the inside of each post, extending 16.5 metres into the field, joined by a line parallel to the goal line. Everything inside it, lines included, is penalty area. A foul by the defending side that would otherwise be a direct free kick becomes a penalty kick if it happens here, and the goalkeeper may handle the ball here and nowhere else, which is the whole reason the handball law is written so carefully around location.

The penalty mark sits 11 metres from the midpoint of the goal line. Outside the penalty area, centred on that mark, is a quarter circle of 9.15 metres radius, and this is the marking that gets misdescribed most often. The arc has nothing to do with where a penalty may be taken from. It exists so the referee can see, at a glance, whether every player other than the kicker and the goalkeeper is at least 9.15 metres from the ball. The part of that circle which falls inside the box is redundant, because players have to be outside the box anyway, so only the sliver beyond the edge of the area needs marking, and that sliver is the arc.

That same 9.15 metres is the distance a defensive wall must retreat at a free kick, which is why the arc's radius and the centre circle's radius are identical.

The goal frame, in full

The distance between the inside faces of the posts is 7.32 metres, and the distance from the ground to the lower edge of the crossbar is 2.44 metres. Every other requirement in the specification follows from safety or from making the goal legible to officials.

Posts and crossbar must be made of approved material, must not be dangerous, and may be square, rectangular, round, elliptical or a hybrid of those profiles. They must be white. They must be the same width as one another, and no wider than 12 centimetres. A goal frame in club colours is not permitted, and neither is a post of one profile paired with a crossbar of another.

Nets are optional in the Laws, which surprises people. Where they are used they must be properly supported and must not interfere with the goalkeeper. That last clause is the reason net stanchions have moved backwards and outwards over the decades and why deep, close-fitting nets have largely disappeared from senior football.

Goals must be firmly secured to the ground, and the Law says the same about portable goals in the same breath. This is the one part of Law 1 written in response to fatalities rather than to competitive disputes, and it applies with full force at the levels where the goals are lightest and the anchoring is most often skipped.

If a crossbar becomes displaced or broken, play stops until it is repaired or replaced. A rope or any other flexible substitute is not allowed. If the frame cannot be restored, the match is abandoned. The rule refuses to accept an approximate goal, because an approximate goal makes every subsequent decision unsafe.

Corner arcs, flagposts and the mark nobody notices

A quarter circle of one metre radius is drawn inside the field from each corner flagpost, and the ball must be placed within that arc for a corner kick. Any part of the ball may overhang the line, since the line belongs to the arc.

A flagpost with a non-pointed top and a flag must stand at each corner, at least 1.5 metres high. The non-pointed top is a safety requirement, not an aesthetic one. Flagposts may also be placed at each end of the halfway line, at least one metre outside the touchline, and those two are optional.

The detail most spectators have never registered is a pair of marks that sit off the field entirely. Marks may be made outside the field of play, 9.15 metres from the corner arc, at right angles to the goal line and to the touchline. They are there so the referee can judge whether defenders have retreated the required distance at a corner without pacing it out. Once you know they exist you see them on every televised corner, small white ticks on the grass beyond the lines.

What may and may not appear on the grass

Advertising is banned on the field of play itself, inside the area enclosed by the goal nets, and within one metre of the boundary lines, for the period from when the teams come out until they leave at half-time and from when they return until the end of the match. Upright advertising must keep at least a metre from the touchlines.

The reproduction of logos or emblems of FIFA, the confederations, national associations, competitions, clubs or any other body is forbidden on the field of play, on the goal nets and the area they enclose, on the goals and flagposts, and on the ground within the boundary lines. The centre-circle badge that appears in some broadcast pictures is a virtual overlay, not paint.

Mowing patterns are not regulated in the same way, which is why the striping is the one place where a club can express anything at all on the surface. Stripes are a consequence of rolling the grass in alternating directions, and they carry a small practical benefit for officials, because a consistent pattern gives a repeating visual reference across the width of the field.

Grass, hybrid and fully artificial surfaces

Law 1 accepts three kinds of surface. A wholly natural playing surface. An integrated combination of artificial and natural materials, which the Law calls a hybrid system. And, where competition rules permit it, a wholly artificial surface.

An artificial surface must be green. Where one is used in a competitive match between clubs of member associations, or in an international match, it has to meet the requirements of the FIFA Quality Programme for Football Turf or the International Match Standard, unless a specific dispensation applies.

UEFA layers its own requirement on top. A stadium must use natural grass, reinforced natural grass, or a surface made entirely of artificial fibres, and an artificial surface needs FIFA certification validated by an accredited laboratory, with a valid FIFA Quality or Quality Pro certificate in place when the stadium is announced and for the whole of the season. The playing surface must be smooth and level, and the field must be playable on every matchday.

Hybrid systems have become the default answer at the top level for a reason that has nothing to do with the Laws. A pitch carrying a fixture list of forty or more senior matches plus training, concerts and international windows cannot be pure natural grass through a northern winter without breaking up. Stitching artificial fibres through the root zone stabilises the surface without changing how the ball behaves, and the certification schemes exist to keep that promise honest.

Why grounds still differ when the standard is one number

If the professional standard is 105 by 68, the obvious question is why any senior ground is anything else. The answer is almost always concrete.

Stands were built to the boundary of the pitch that existed when they were built. Widening a field by two metres means moving the front row of a stand, the tunnel, the dugouts, the advertising hoardings, the camera platforms and often the drainage. A club with a stand that reaches close to the touchline has no space to give.

Some grounds are constrained by a former running track or an athletics profile, some by a listed structure, some by the site's boundary with a road or a railway. Others are constrained by what has to fit outside the lines rather than inside them: a run-off area that keeps players away from the boards, room for the fourth official and the substitutes, space for hoardings and for pitch-side broadcast positions. The rectangle is only one part of the footprint a modern fixture requires.

There is also a legacy of choice. Before competitions standardised, clubs picked dimensions that suited the team, and pitches were trimmed towards the lower end of the permitted range where a side played direct and stretched towards the upper end where it wanted the ball. Competition rules have closed most of that room, but grounds built during the earlier period still carry its imprint.

What extra width does to a team that wants the ball

Pitch size does less than tactical folklore claims and more than nothing, and the effects run mostly through width rather than length.

Width is the dimension that a defensive block has to stretch to cover. A back four defending a 68-metre field has more ground per player than the same four on a 64-metre field, and the difference compounds, because the block also has to stay compact vertically. Every metre of extra width is a metre the far-side defender has to travel when the ball is switched, and it is the switch that punishes a team that has shifted too far towards the ball.

A side that wants to build patiently from the goalkeeper benefits directly. Building out from the back works by dragging pressers towards one touchline and then playing away from the pressure, and the value of that pattern rises with the distance the opposition has to cover to recover. On a wide field the first pass out of the trap buys more time than it does on a narrow one.

Extra length matters less than people assume, because length is mostly consumed by the space behind a defensive line rather than the space in front of it. Where it does bite is on transitions. A longer field gives a recovering defender fractionally more distance to make up the ground on a runner, which slightly favours a high defensive line, and it lengthens the counter-attack that follows a turnover in the attacking third.

What a tighter pitch does to the team that does not want the ball

Take four metres off the width and the same mechanisms run backwards. The block is more compact for free. Lateral distances shrink, so a switch of play arrives at a defender who is already close enough to engage. The cost of pressing falls, because the space that has to be covered when a press is broken is smaller.

That is why a low block is cheaper to hold on a smaller field, and why pressing systems are affected in a subtler way. Coordinated counter-pressing depends on cutting off passing lanes rather than on chasing the ball, and a narrower field has fewer lanes to cut off. Both the pressing side and the side being pressed feel the pitch, and the net effect depends on which of them has more to lose from space disappearing.

The honest caveat is that both teams play on the same surface. A club that narrows its pitch narrows it for itself as well, so the benefit only exists if that club has built a squad and a training week around the tighter geometry while the visitors have not. That is a real edge and a small one. It is also increasingly unavailable, because the competition standard has removed the room to engineer it.

Set-piece geometry is the one place where the fixed markings dominate the variable ones. The penalty area is the same size on every field, the arc is the same radius, and the goal is the same width, so the value of a corner or an attacking free kick is essentially unaffected by whether the pitch is wide or narrow. What changes is how often those situations occur, not what each one is worth.

The technical area, and the strip of ground that is not the field

Law 1 also defines a space that is not part of the playing area at all, and it is the one everybody watches for ninety minutes without thinking about its measurements.

The technical area relates to the seated area set aside for the coaching staff and substitutes. It extends one metre on either side of that seating and forwards to within one metre of the touchline. It should be marked, so that the boundary is visible to the officials and to the occupants.

The number of people permitted to occupy it is set by competition rules rather than by the Laws, which is why a Champions League bench and a non-league dugout hold different numbers of coaches. What the Laws do fix is behaviour. Occupants must behave responsibly, they must remain within the area except in special circumstances such as a physiotherapist entering the field with the referee's permission, and only one person at a time is authorised to convey tactical instructions before returning to the marked area.

That last clause is the reason two coaches are not supposed to be standing on the line shouting at once, and it is enforced unevenly enough that most viewers assume no such rule exists. It also explains why a manager serving a touchline ban has to be somewhere with no line of communication to the bench: the offence is not standing near the grass, it is directing the team from beside it.

Youth, veterans and grassroots football, where the ranges earn their keep

The wide permitted range in Law 1 looks like an anachronism until you look at the levels the Laws are actually written for, and then it looks like the point.

The Laws contain an explicit provision for modifications in youth football, veterans' football, disability football and grassroots football. National associations may vary the size of the field of play, the size, weight and material of the ball, the width between the goalposts and the height of the crossbar, the duration of the periods of play and the substitution arrangements. Nothing else may be altered.

That is a carefully bounded list. Every item on it is a physical parameter that scales with the size and strength of the players, and none of them touch the structure of the game. Offside stays offside. A penalty is still a penalty. A child playing seven a side on a small field with a smaller goal is playing the same sport under the same Laws, adjusted at the four places where an adult specification would make it unplayable.

This is also where the association, rather than IFAB or the competition, does the work. Youth formats, goal sizes and pitch sizes for each age group are published by the national governing body, and they differ from country to country. The Law grants the power; the association exercises it.

Can a club change its pitch, and when

Not during a season, in practice, and not because Law 1 forbids it. The Laws are silent on consistency between fixtures. It is the competition regulations that do the work, by requiring dimensions to be declared in advance and by inspecting grounds against the declaration.

Between seasons the position is different. A club re-laying a pitch can change its dimensions within whatever range its competition allows and its stands physically permit, and re-lays are common because a modern surface has a working life measured in seasons rather than decades. A promoted club may have to change, because the standard it has to meet rises with the division and the ground criteria arrive with the promotion.

Where a club is genuinely unable to reach the standard, the usual route is a dispensation rather than an exemption in the rules. The competition accepts a smaller field for a named ground, often on the basis that it will be corrected at the next redevelopment. That is how a handful of senior grounds continue to play on pitches slightly inside the standard without anybody being in breach of anything.

Reading a pitch from the stand

A few things are worth looking for, and none of them need a tape measure.

Look at the distance between the touchline and the advertising boards. A generous run-off usually means a ground built or rebuilt recently, and it tends to travel with a full-size field. A tight run-off, with the boards almost on the line, often means an older footprint and a pitch at the smaller end.

Look at the corner flags during a corner. The corner arc has a radius of one metre and the flagpost must be at least 1.5 metres high with a non-pointed top, so a taker standing at the flag gives you a reliable scale reference for everything else in shot.

Look at how far a full-back has to travel when the ball is switched from one touchline to the other. On a full-width field the switch buys a clear extra beat before the receiver is closed down. On a narrow one it does not, and a side that has built its attacking pattern around the switch will look strangely blunt without ever being outplayed.

Look at the surface under floodlights in midwinter. Stitching lines from a hybrid system show up as a faint regular grid, and a pitch that holds its shape in February after a heavy fixture list is almost certainly reinforced rather than pure grass.

Then remember which numbers are actually in play. The rectangle varies within limits. The goal, the spot, the two areas, the arc and the circle do not, and every decision the officials make about handball, offside or a foul in the box is measured against markings that are identical everywhere.
