Tennis scoring explained: why some points matter more
How points, games, sets and matches nest inside each other, why deuce needs a two-point margin, how tiebreaks work, and why the better player can lose.

Two players walk off court. One of them has won thirteen more points than the other. The other one has won the match.
Nothing has gone wrong, and nobody has miscounted. That result is not a quirk of tennis scoring, it is the system working exactly as designed, because the design throws away most of its own information on purpose.
Ask for tennis scoring explained and you will usually be given the surface: love, 15, 30, 40, six games takes a set, two or three sets takes the match. All of it is true and none of it is the interesting part, because it describes the labels rather than the machine underneath them. The machine is the thing worth understanding, and it is the most consequential piece of design in the sport. It decides which points players practise, which ones make hands shake, why a match cannot be closed out by running down a clock, and why the scoreboard is a genuinely poor guide to who has played better.
Tennis is scored in nested containers. That single fact explains almost everything else.
The score is a nest, not a total
Nearly every other major sport keeps one running total per side. Goals, runs, points, tries. Whatever a team accumulates stays accumulated, and the side with the larger number at the end wins. The scoreboard is a ledger and the game is an addition problem.
Tennis keeps three scores at once, stacked inside each other, and only the smallest of them behaves like a normal total.
Points make up a game. Games make up a set. Sets make up the match. At every boundary the level below is wiped clean and replaced by a single tick. Win a game to love, win it from four deuces after twenty-two points, and the scoreboard records precisely the same thing: one game. Win a set 6-0 or 7-6 and the match score reads one set either way.
This is the mechanism that makes the sport different from almost everything else on television. In tennis, not all points are worth the same. Two points played in the same match, by the same players, with the same effort, can differ in value by a factor most fans would not believe if you wrote it down. One of them is close to worthless. The other one is the match.
That inequality is not a side effect. It is the entire product. A flat total would make tennis a longer, duller sport in which a good player pulled steadily ahead and the outcome was known an hour before the end. The nest converts a long grind into a sequence of small, sudden, self-contained crises, and it does it by making the boundaries between containers matter enormously and everything in the middle of a container matter hardly at all.

These follow from the rules rather than from any particular match: the minimum route through each container, and the margin the rules demand at every level of the nest.
Seventy-two points is a best-of-five match won in straight sets, every set 6-0, every game to love. It will never happen. It is worth knowing anyway, because it sets the floor: a five-set match that runs to four hours might contain four hundred points, and the difference between seventy-two and four hundred is entirely made up of points that were played and then discarded.
Where 15, 30 and 40 came from, and why nobody can prove it
The numbers are the first thing anyone asks about and the one part of the system with no reliable answer.
The story most people have heard involves a clock. A clock face was supposedly used to record the score in the game's medieval ancestor, with the hand moved a quarter turn for each point won: a quarter past for the first, half past for the second, quarter to for the third, and the top of the hour for the game. Forty-five, the theory goes, was shortened to forty in the calling of the score because it is quicker to say, and the numbers survived into the modern game long after the clock stopped being used.
It is a satisfying explanation. It is also unproven. There is no contemporary source that shows anyone actually scoring a match on a clock face, the sequence appears in French records of the game long before minute hands were common on clocks, and the shortening of forty-five to forty is asserted rather than documented. Some accounts point instead to units of currency in medieval wagering, others to divisions of the court used in the older game. Take your pick, but take them as folklore.
Two things are certain. The first is that the scoring vocabulary is French in origin, which is why deuce, love and the peculiar numbers all resist explanation in English. The second is that the numbers are pure labels. Fifteen is not fifteen of anything. It means one point won, and it could equally be a letter or a symbol without changing a single thing about how the sport works.
That is the useful insight buried in the trivia. A game is a race to four points, and 15, 30 and 40 are just the names of the first three rungs. Everything you need to know about the value of a point comes from counting how many rungs are left, not from the numbers written on them.
Love for zero has the same problem and the same range of guesses: the French for egg, describing the shape of a nought, or the English phrase for doing something for nothing. Nobody can settle it either.
Deuce exists so that a game cannot be won by accident
Here is the first place the design shows its hand.
At 40-40 the score is called deuce. From there a player does not win the game by winning one more point. They win it by taking two in a row. The first puts them at advantage. The second wins the game. If they lose the second, the score returns to deuce and the requirement resets, and this can continue indefinitely.
Why not just play a single deciding point? It would be quicker, it would be more dramatic, and the sport does exactly that in some formats, which we will come to.
The answer is that a single point is close to a coin toss, and the rules do not want a game decided by one. Between two players of similar standard, any individual point is heavily influenced by the serve, by a net cord, by a line call, by a gust that lifts a ball long. Requiring two consecutive points does not eliminate luck, but it multiplies the difficulty of getting lucky, because the same player has to produce twice under the same pressure without an intervening reset.
The two-point margin is not a local rule for deuce. It is the spine of the whole system, and it appears at every level of the nest. A game needs two clear points. A set needs two clear games, which is why 6-5 is not a set and 7-5 is. A tiebreak needs two clear points regardless of how far past seven the score has travelled. The rules are consistent about this in a way they are consistent about very little else: no container is ever closed by a one-unit lead.
The price is time, and the sport has spent a century arguing about how much of it to pay.
- 0-0, the server beginsThe server calls the score before every point with their own total first. Nothing is at stake yet. A game is a race to four points with a two-point margin, so at this moment either player can lose the next three points and still win.
- 15-0The server takes the first point. The label means one point won and nothing else. There are three rungs left.
- 15-15The receiver takes the next. The game is level and the two points already played have been erased as completely as if they had never been played at all.
- 15-30The receiver takes another. The server is now one point from real trouble and the game has quietly become important, without anybody announcing it.
- 15-40, two break pointsThe receiver needs one point from two attempts to break serve. This is the single most valuable position in ordinary tennis and it arrived after five points.
- 30-40, one break point leftThe server saves the first with a big serve. The receiver's margin for error has halved. Nothing on the scoreboard records how close that was.
- 40-40, deuceThe server saves the second. Two points that could each have ended the game have been won back, and the score is now level with everything before it discarded.
- Advantage serverThe server wins the next point. One more takes the game. Note what has happened: the receiver's two break points have bought them exactly nothing.
- 40-40, deuce againThe receiver wins the following point and the requirement resets. Advantage is not a lead that can be banked, it is a state that survives one point only.
- Advantage server, then gameThe server takes two in a row from deuce and holds. The scoreboard records one game to the server. It records neither the ten points played nor the two break points saved.
Constructed game. The sequence of points is invented to pass through every state a game can reach: a lead, a deficit, break point, deuce, advantage, and back to deuce again.
Read the last line of that figure again, because it is the whole subject in one sentence. The scoreboard records one game. Everything that made it interesting has been deleted.
Why one player serves an entire game
A player serves every point of a game, then the other player serves every point of the next one, and they alternate that way for the rest of the match. Ends are changed after the first game and after every second game thereafter, so the total number of games played is always odd at a change of ends, which spreads the sun, the wind and the bad end evenly.
The alternation looks like a courtesy. It is the load-bearing wall of the entire sport.
Serving is a large advantage. The server chooses where the point starts, hits the only shot in tennis that nobody can interfere with, gets two attempts at it, and can end the point outright before the opponent has touched the ball. How large the advantage is varies enormously by level and by surface, which is one of the reasons the court a match is played on changes the game so much, but at professional level it is decisive enough that holding serve is the expected outcome and failing to hold is treated as an event.
Now put that advantage inside the nest, because the combination is what produces tennis as we know it.
If service alternated point by point, the advantage would be shared out evenly across every point of the match and would cancel almost perfectly. Nothing would ever build. Instead, the server keeps the ball for a whole container. That concentrates the advantage into blocks and means the expected result of each block is known in advance: the server wins it. A set therefore becomes a sequence of predictable holds punctuated, occasionally, by something else happening.
That something else is what the whole sport is about.
A break of serve is usually the only thing that happens in a set
If both players hold every service game, a set cannot be decided at all. It goes 6-6 and needs a tiebreak. The rest of a normal set is the two players confirming what was already expected of them.
So the set is decided by breaks, and breaks are rare. The scarcity is the point. When holding is the default, a single break of serve is enough to win a set, because it hands one player a lead the other cannot recover without producing a rare event of their own.
Follow the arithmetic on a constructed set. Player A holds their five service games, breaks Player B once, and holds the rest. The set finishes 6-4. Player A has done exactly one unusual thing in ten games and has won the set. Player B may have played superbly for nine games out of ten. They have lost.
This is why the language of tennis commentary is so heavily weighted towards serve. A player is not described as leading, they are described as a break up, because that is the unit of a lead that actually means something. It is also why the concept of serving for the set carries so much dread. The player who has broken must then hold one more time under the only pressure that has appeared all afternoon, and if they fail, the break is cancelled and the set restarts on level terms at 5-5.
The receiver's position is worth stating plainly, because it explains the odd rhythm of a professional match. For long stretches, the receiver's realistic goal is not to win the game. It is to reach 30-30 or 0-30 often enough that one of those positions eventually turns into a break point, and then to win one of those. A receiver can go an hour without winning a game and still be doing their job, provided the pressure accumulates. Nothing on the scoreboard shows this accumulation, which is why the scoreline of a set frequently misrepresents it.
The tiebreak was invented to stop matches, not to make them fairer
Before the tiebreak, a set at 6-6 simply carried on. Games alternated until somebody achieved a two-game lead, which required a break of serve at a moment when both players had settled into holding comfortably. Sets could run to twenty, thirty, forty games. Matches could run past the light. Tournaments could not tell broadcasters when anything would finish, and players could be destroyed by a first-round match before the tournament had properly started. Wimbledon once produced a first-round match that had to be suspended and resumed across three days because its final set would not end.
The tiebreak is the fix, and it was a genuinely radical one, because it does something the rest of the scoring system never does. It puts a ceiling on a container.
Its mechanics are simple and its serve rotation is the part people get wrong. The tiebreak is won by the first player to seven points, with a two-point margin, and it continues past seven until somebody leads by two. One player serves the first point. After that, the serve changes hands every two points, and the players change ends after every six points.
- The set reaches 6-6Twelve games have been played, which is an even number, so the players do not change ends first. The tiebreak begins straight away and is scored in ordinary numbers, one, two, three, not in 15 and 30.
- Player A serves point 1 onlyThe player whose turn it was to serve the thirteenth game serves the first point of the tiebreak, from the right-hand court, and then hands over the ball.
- Player B serves points 2 and 3B serves the first of those from the left-hand court and the second from the right. Every server from here on delivers two points, starting from the left.
- Player A serves points 4 and 5The pattern is now fixed for the rest of the tiebreak. After every even-numbered point, both players have served exactly the same number of points, which is the whole reason for the odd first point.
- After the sixth point, change endsEnds change after every six points played, without a sit-down break, so neither player spends the decisive stretch of the set at the bad end.
- A mini-break is a point won against the serveAt 4-3 with the score on the other player's serve, the leader is not merely ahead, they have taken a point they were not expected to win. This is the tiebreak's equivalent of a break of serve.
- First to seven, by twoIf the score reaches 6-6 inside the tiebreak, it continues. Eight points to six wins it. Twelve to ten wins it. The two-point margin from deuce survives here intact.
- The set is recorded 7-6The tiebreak's own score vanishes into a single game, and the scoreboard cannot tell the difference between winning it 7-0 and winning it 15-13.
- Player B serves the next gameWhoever received first in the tiebreak serves first in the following set, which keeps the serving order continuous across the join.

The single point at the start is the piece of the design worth admiring. Without it, the player who served first would have served two points before the other had served any, and would be ahead on serves at every odd moment of the tiebreak. Giving the first server one point and everybody else two means that after any even number of points, the two players have served identical numbers. The advantage of serving first is reduced to a single point of asymmetry that never grows.
Changing ends every six points does the same job for wind and sun that the odd-game change does in a normal set, compressed to fit a shorter container. The full set of variations, including the ten-point version used to decide matches, is a subject in its own right and worth reading separately on how the different tiebreak formats work.
Match formats: best of three, best of five, and the deciding set nobody could agree on
A match is the first player to win a majority of an odd number of sets. Best of three means first to two. Best of five means first to three.
Best of five has retreated to almost nothing. It survives for men at the four majors and, in a handful of team and exhibition contexts, occasionally elsewhere. Everything else on both tours is best of three, and the reason is a mixture of scheduling, television and the physical cost of a five-set match to a player who has another one in two days.
The two formats are not the same competition with different lengths. Best of five is significantly more forgiving of a bad start, because a set lost is one third of the requirement rather than one half, and it gives the stronger player more chances to demonstrate that they are the stronger player. Best of three compresses the match and raises the value of everything in the first set, which is why upsets are more common in it. That difference feeds straight into the way the majors are seeded and drawn, because a longer format protects seeds and a shorter one exposes them.
The deciding set is where the four majors spent decades disagreeing with each other, and it is one of the few areas of tennis rules where the disagreement has been resolved.
The original position was that the final set had no tiebreak at all. It ran on until somebody led by two games, exactly as all sets once did, on the reasoning that a match should be settled by a break of serve rather than by a short sprint. That reasoning is respectable, and the cost of it was the marathon matches that broke players and schedules. One major introduced a tiebreak in the final set at 6-6 early, another kept advantage sets for years, and one adopted a compromise in which the final set ran on until 12-12 before a tiebreak was played. For a period, a player could reach all four finals in a single year under four different sets of rules about how the last set ended.
The majors have since converged on the same answer: a ten-point tiebreak, played at 6-6 in the final set, requiring a two-point margin. It is a deliberate middle position. Ten points rather than seven makes the deciding sprint long enough that a single mini-break is not automatically fatal, while the ceiling still exists and matches still finish.
The other experiments are worth knowing because you will meet them.
No-ad scoring removes advantage entirely. At deuce, one point decides the game, with the receiver choosing which side to receive from. It shortens matches, it makes each deuce point enormous, and it is the standard in most professional doubles as well as in a great deal of college and junior tennis.
Short sets run to four games rather than six, with a tiebreak at 3-3 or 4-4 depending on the format. They appear in team competitions and in exhibition events that need a guaranteed finish time.
The match tiebreak replaces the deciding set completely, usually as a race to ten points. Doubles across both tours uses it, and it is common in the lower levels of the sport wherever court time is scarce.
Each of these does the same thing. It removes containers or shrinks them, which reduces the amount of tennis the better player has to survive and therefore increases the chance of a surprise. That is a choice about entertainment and scheduling, not an improvement in measurement.
Tennis scoring explained: why one point can be worth twenty others
This is the part that matters, and the part almost every explanation of tennis scoring skips.
In a sport with a flat total, every point has identical value by definition. Score one, and the gap moves by one. Tennis does not work like that at all, and the variation is far larger than most viewers realise.
Think about what a point actually does. It moves the score inside a game. If it does not end the game, that is all it does, and its effect can be entirely undone by the next point. Only the point that closes a container leaves anything permanent behind.
Take a point at 40-0 in the first game of a match. The server has three chances to win one point. If they lose this one, they are at 40-15 and still have two chances. The point has almost no capacity to change anything about the match. The player who loses it has lost nothing they will remember, and the player who wins it has bought nothing that was not already theirs.
Now take a break point at 4-5, 30-40, in a deciding set. Win it, and the receiver is serving for the match. Lose it, and the game most likely goes to the server, and the receiver is serving at 5-5 to stay in a match that could still go either way. One point decides which of two very different matches is being played, and there is no next point that can undo it, because the container it closes is the set and the set closes the match.
The word for this is leverage: the amount by which the outcome of the match swings depending on who wins a single point. Leverage in tennis is not distributed smoothly. It is concentrated at container boundaries, and the deeper the container, the higher the concentration. A point that only decides a point is worth almost nothing. A point that decides a game is worth something. A point that decides a game that decides a set that decides the match is worth everything.
Three factors set the leverage of any point.
Its position inside the game. Points at 30-30, at deuce and at break point sit on the boundary. Points at 40-0 and 0-40 sit deep inside a decided outcome. This is why players talk about 30-30 as though it were a scoreline in its own right. It is the last moment at which the game is genuinely level and every subsequent point is a boundary point.
Whose serve it is. A break point on the opponent's serve is worth more than a game point on your own, because holding serve is the expected event and breaking is the rare one. Winning a point that produces an expected outcome moves the match less than winning one that produces an unexpected one.
How deep the game sits in the match. The same 30-40 is worth a different amount in the first game of the first set and in the tenth game of the third. In the first, several hours of tennis remain in which the effect can be reversed. In the tenth, there may be nothing left at all.
Multiply those three together and the spread is enormous. The gap between the least and most valuable point in a close match is not a matter of one being slightly more important. It is a matter of one being a rounding error and the other being the result.
This is not unique to tennis, though tennis takes it further than most. Any sport that decides its outcome through nested sub-contests rather than a running total behaves the same way, which is why scoring a boxing match by rounds produces the same class of paradox: a fighter can land more punches across the night, lose the rounds that were close, and lose the decision.
How to win more points and lose the match anyway
The direct consequence of the nest is that total points won is not the quantity being maximised. Nobody is trying to win the most points. They are trying to win the last one in enough containers.
Here is a constructed best-of-three match, with invented figures chosen to make the arithmetic obvious.
Player A won twelve more points than Player B across the afternoon. Player A lost the match in three sets.
Look at where the surplus went. All of it, and more, was banked in the first set, where A was thirty points to fourteen and won six games to one. Every point of that margin above what was needed to win the set was discarded at the boundary. It bought exactly one tick on the scoreboard, the same tick B collected twice by winning two points more than they lost across two entire sets.
That is not a flaw anyone is trying to fix. It is the reason the sport is watchable. A player who is being outclassed is never more than a tight set away from being level, because their deficit does not carry forward. A player who is dominating cannot bank the domination. Every set starts at 0-0 for both of them, and the scoreboard has no memory.
The same principle explains a source of endless argument among fans, which is that the scoreline of a completed match is a very thin description of it. A 6-4, 6-4 win might have contained eight tight games and two comfortable ones, or the reverse. Points won, games won and sets won answer three different questions, and only the third one determines who progresses. Ranking systems inherit this directly, since ranking points are paid for the round reached and nothing else, so a player who loses a three-hour final-set tiebreak collects precisely what a player who was beaten in fifty minutes collects.
What leverage does to strategy, nerve and coaching
Once you accept that points differ in value, a great deal of apparently strange professional behaviour becomes sensible.
Players do not play at a constant intensity, and they should not. Effort is a finite resource across a four-hour match, and spending it evenly across every point would be a mistake when the points are not evenly valuable. A player who is 40-0 down on the opponent's serve, in a set they are losing, is frequently accused of not trying. Often they are declining to spend anything on a point that cannot change the match, in order to have something left for the game after next. The tactic has a cost in momentum and in crowd support, which is why the good players do it invisibly rather than obviously.
Practice is organised around the same insight. Coaching at professional level is not principally about strokes, it is about patterns for specific score situations: what to do on a second serve at 30-30, which return to hit on break point, where to serve at deuce against a particular opponent. Serving patterns are rehearsed by score, because the value of a first serve at 0-30 is different from the value of the same serve at 40-0, and a player who serves identically at both is wasting the good one.
Nerve is the other half. Tennis has no clock, and this matters more than any other single feature of the scoring system. A team leading in football can run the ball into a corner. A cricket side can bat out a draw. A basketball team can hold possession. In tennis there is no way to preserve a lead by using up time, because time is not a resource in the game at all. The only way to finish a match is to win the final point, and the opponent has to be on court, hitting, when you do it.
That is the source of the specific horror of serving for a set. The player is required to produce, in one game, the same standard they have produced all afternoon, at the exact moment they have the most to lose and the opponent has nothing left to protect. The receiver in that game is playing with pure freedom, which is why so many of those games are broken. The scoring system manufactures a moment of maximum asymmetry in pressure and puts it at the end of every set.
The mirror of it is the tiebreak, where the pressure is asymmetric in the other direction. Both players have failed to break each other for twelve games, and the set is now decided in a container so short that a single mini-break usually settles it. Players who serve enormous first serves are advantaged; players who grind and wear opponents down over long games have had their best weapon taken away. Certain careers have been shaped almost entirely by whether their owner was good in tiebreaks.
There is a psychological cost peculiar to the nest, too. Because a set resets everything, a player can play brilliantly for forty minutes, lose 7-6, and have literally nothing to show for it. Recovering from that requires believing that the last set was not evidence of anything, which is a hard thing to believe while sitting on a chair with a towel over your head. The players who last are usually the ones who have made peace with the scoreboard's amnesia.
The umpire's part: lets, foot faults, hindrance and the clock
The scoring system needs someone to run it, and the procedural rules around it are where casual viewers most often lose the thread.
The umpire calls the score and controls the match. Announcing the score before each point is not ceremony. It is the mechanism by which the state of a game that has no visible running total is kept agreed between two players who are twenty metres apart and out of breath.
A let is a replay, not a fault. If a serve clips the net cord and lands in the correct service box, the serve is replayed with no penalty, and there is no limit to how many times this can happen in a row. A player can theoretically serve a dozen lets. Note the asymmetry with the rest of the sport: during a rally, a ball that clips the net and drops in is simply in play, and the player who has just been robbed of a winner has to run for it. The let exists only for the serve, because the serve is the one shot the receiver is entitled to receive cleanly.
A foot fault is a fault, with no warning. The server may not touch the baseline or the court inside it, nor the imaginary extensions of the centre mark and the sideline, before striking the ball. It is a technical offence rather than a moral one, and it costs a first serve exactly as a serve into the net would.
Hindrance separates deliberate from involuntary. If a player deliberately does something that hinders the opponent, they lose the point. If the hindrance is unintentional, the point is replayed as a let. This is the rule that governs grunting complaints, dropped hats, shouts during a rally and balls rolling in from the next court, and the distinction it draws is intent, which is the umpire's judgement rather than a measurement.
Time is limited, and the shot clock made it visible. The rules allow twenty-five seconds between the end of one point and the striking of the next serve, ninety seconds at a changeover, and one hundred and twenty seconds at the end of a set. Those limits existed for years before anybody could see them, enforced from a chair with a stopwatch and a great deal of discretion, which produced constant argument about whether a player had actually taken too long. Putting the count on a screen changed the argument rather than ending it, because the umpire still decides when the clock starts.
The penalty schedule for time is separate from the one for conduct. A first time violation is a warning; a repeat costs the server a first serve, so they play the next point on a second serve only, which is a real and immediate cost rather than a bookkeeping note. Conduct offences run on a different escalating ladder, from warning to point penalty to game penalty and finally to default, and the two schedules do not share a counter.
Line calling sits alongside all of this, and has changed more in the last decade than the scoring itself has in fifty years. The move from human line judges and player challenges to fully automated calling has removed one of the few remaining places where the score could be genuinely disputed, and it deserves its own treatment in how electronic line calling replaced the line judge.
Doubles scores differently, and the differences are not cosmetic
Doubles uses the same nest with three changes, each of which alters the game more than it appears to.
The serving order is fixed for the set. Each team nominates which of its two players serves first, and the four players then serve in rotation, so any given player serves every fourth game. The order can be changed at the start of a new set but not during one. A team can therefore find itself with its weaker server delivering the most important game of the set, and there is nothing to be done about it until the set ends.
The receiving order is fixed too. Each player receives from the same side of the court, the deuce court or the advantage court, for the whole set. This is more restrictive than it sounds. It means a team cannot move its better returner across to face the crucial break point, and it means that a player who is struggling on one wing is stuck there for six games or more.
Most professional doubles uses no-ad scoring and a match tiebreak. At deuce, a single point decides the game, and the receiving team chooses which of its players takes it. A deciding set is replaced by a race to ten points. The effect is dramatic: the number of high-leverage points in a doubles match is far higher than in singles, because every deuce is a game point and the entire third set is compressed into one tiebreak.
The combination produces a different sport. Singles rewards accumulation, the slow application of pressure until a break arrives. Doubles rewards being good at the boundary, because the boundaries arrive constantly and there is almost no middle. It also makes the serve even more dominant than in singles, since two players cover the court behind it, which means breaks are rarer still and the few break points that appear carry even more weight.
The majors have moved towards the tour formats over time, at different speeds and with their own exceptions, and mixed doubles in particular has been used as a testing ground for shortened formats. Anyone watching a doubles match should check the format before assuming a third set will be played.
Reading a scoreboard and knowing who is actually winning
A tennis scoreboard is a compression of the match into the smallest number of digits that can determine a winner. It is excellent at that job and poor at almost every other one. If you want to know what is really happening, four things tell you more than the score does, and all four are visible from the sofa.
Who is serving, and where the set is. A set at 4-4 with the player who has already dropped serve about to serve is in a completely different state from one at 4-4 with the other player serving. Never read a set score without reading the service order alongside it, because the same numbers describe two different positions.
Whether there has been a break, and who has it. The set score alone hides this. A 4-2 lead achieved with a break is a real lead. A 4-2 lead in which both players have held every game is not a lead at all, it is just a player who happened to serve first.
How the lost games were lost. A set going 5-2 against a player who has lost three deuce games is a different story from one going 5-2 against a player who has been losing games to love. The first is a player narrowly missing. The second is a player being beaten. The scoreboard shows the same 5-2 for both.
Where the boundaries are about to arrive. The interesting question in any tennis match is never who is ahead, it is what the next high-leverage moment will be and who has to produce at it. A player two points from a set is not in the same match they were in three points ago, and the shift happens without anything on the scoreboard changing.
Watch those four and the sport stops looking like a series of rallies and starts looking like what it is, which is a long negotiation over a small number of moments. That structure is deliberate, it is old, and it survives because it turns out to be extraordinarily good at producing tension out of a game that would otherwise be an exhibition of ball striking. Points build games, games build sets, and sets build the match, with each level resetting the one below it. Why is tennis scored 15, 30 and 40?
Nobody can prove where the numbers came from. The most popular explanation is that a clock face was once used to record the score, with a hand moved a quarter turn to 15, then 30, then 45, and that 45 was shortened in speech to 40, but there is no contemporary document that establishes this and the sequence appears in French sources centuries old. The honest answer is that the numbers are a survival from the game's medieval ancestor and their origin is a plausible story rather than settled history.
What is deuce in tennis?
Deuce is the score when both players have won three points in a game, written 40-40, and it exists so that no game can be won by a single point at the moment the players are level. From deuce a player must win two points in a row: the first takes them to advantage, and the second wins the game, while losing the second returns the score to deuce. The word almost certainly comes from the French for two, describing the two clear points that are now required.
How does a tennis tiebreak work?
At 6-6 in a set the players play a tiebreak, won by the first to seven points with a lead of two, and continuing past seven until someone leads by two. The player due to serve the next game serves the first point only, after which the serve changes hands every two points, and the players change ends after every six points. The set is recorded as 7-6, and the player who received first in the tiebreak serves the first game of the next set.
Can you win more points than your opponent and still lose a tennis match?
Yes, and it happens regularly at every level of the game. Because each set is a self-contained contest, points won in a set you lose heavily are thrown away entirely, so a player who wins one set overwhelmingly and loses two narrowly can finish with more total points and no match. The scoring system is designed to reward winning points at the right moments rather than winning the most of them.
