How to bowl a yorker: technique, target and practice
A mechanical guide to how to bowl a yorker: the landing zone, release height and timing, grip, run-up, the four types, the fault list and drills that hold up.

There is a coaching drill so common it is almost a cliché: a shoe, a cone or a chalk rectangle placed at the batting end, and a bowler firing ball after ball at it with nobody standing there. It looks like the least imaginative practice in the game. It is also the only honest way to learn how to bowl a yorker, because a yorker is not defined by what it does to a batter. It is defined by a patch of ground roughly the size of a doormat, and either the ball lands on it or it does not.
Everything else follows from that. The delivery works because of where it pitches, so learning it means learning to control length to a precision no other ball in cricket demands. This piece takes the target apart, works out what actually sets length in a bowling action, explains why the failure is nearly always a full toss rather than a long hop, and sets out the four distinct versions of the delivery and the practice that makes any of them repeatable.
The target is a rectangle of turf, and here is how big it is
The popping crease sits 1.22 metres in front of the stumps. A batter standing in his ground has his back foot behind that line and his front foot somewhere in the 1.22 metres between the line and the stumps, which means the ideal landing patch for a yorker is inside that strip, at or just short of where the toes are.
Call the useful zone the last half metre before the stumps and the first half metre in front of the crease line, and you have a target about a metre deep. That is generous compared with what bowlers actually aim at, because the two ends of that metre produce different deliveries: the front end is a genuine yorker jammed under the bat, the back end is a full delivery the batter can drive. Working bowlers narrow it to a few tens of centimetres.
Across the pitch, the target is set by the stumps and the wide line. The wicket is 22.86 centimetres wide, and in white-ball cricket the wide guideline is marked at 0.89 metres either side of the middle stump. Between the outside of off stump and that marking there is a usable band a little under 80 centimetres wide, and the four kinds of yorker are simply four choices about where inside that band to aim.

Why the delivery works, in terms of the bat rather than the batter
A bat swung in a vertical plane travels along an arc, and the bottom of that arc is the ground. A ball arriving at the base of the stumps is arriving at the one place where the bat has run out of arc.
Two consequences follow. The batter cannot meet the ball early, because early in the downswing the bat is still above the ball's arrival height. He cannot meet it late, because late in the swing the bat has passed the ball and is travelling up again. The vertical window in which bat and ball can occupy the same space is narrower for a yorker than for any other length, and it narrows further the fuller the ball is.
The second consequence is about direction rather than timing. To reach a ball at ground level the bat has to be close to vertical, with the hands ahead of the face and the blade angled down. A blade angled down cannot send the ball up. That is why a well-directed yorker is not merely hard to hit for four, it is hard to hit in the air at all, and why the shots invented to counter it, the scoop and the ramp, all work by getting the bat under the ball rather than through it.
The third thing the delivery does is take away the batter's ability to choose. A short ball can be left, ducked, pulled or cut. A ball heading for the base of leg stump has to be played, and it has to be played in one particular way, from a body position the batter must adopt before he knows the ball is coming.
What actually sets length: two dials, not five
Bowlers are told to bowl fuller and given a dozen cues for it. Underneath all of them there are two variables that decide where a ball pitches, plus one that scales the effect of both.
Release height. The higher the hand at the moment of release, the steeper the ball can descend and still cover the same ground. Drop the release point and the trajectory flattens, and a flatter trajectory travels further before it reaches the turf.
Release timing within the arc. The bowling arm sweeps through a circle, and the ball leaves it tangentially. Let the ball go early, high in the arc, and it is launched on a downward path. Hold it a fraction longer and the tangent flattens, then rises. The difference between a yorker and a beamer is entirely a matter of where in that rotation the fingers stop holding on.
Pace. Speed scales the whole thing. A faster ball spends less time in the air, so gravity has less opportunity to bring it down, so the same launch angle produces a fuller delivery. This is the reason a bowler who adds pace late in his career often finds his yorkers going full and why a slower ball aimed at the same target lands shorter unless the release is adjusted.
Everything else in the coaching vocabulary, the front arm, the braced leg, the head position, the stride, matters only because it moves one of those two dials. That is a useful simplification, because it tells a bowler what to look for when the ball goes wrong.
The margin, expressed as an angle
A projectile calculation makes the size of the problem obvious. Take a ball released about two metres above the ground at roughly 36 metres per second, ignore air resistance and swing, and work out the launch angle needed to land it at various distances from the batter's stumps.
Read the gaps rather than the values. A good length and a half volley are separated by more than two and a half degrees, which is a difference a bowler can feel. A yorker and a full toss are separated by around six tenths of one degree, which is a difference nobody can feel.
That single figure explains the character of the delivery. Getting from a good length to a full length is a change of intent. Getting from a full length to a yorker is a change of intent plus a tolerance, and the tolerance is smaller than the natural variation in most bowling actions. It also explains the direction of failure: since less angle means fuller, and since almost every error under pressure flattens the trajectory, the mistake arrives as a full toss.
The grip, and why it is deliberately unremarkable
A yorker is normally bowled with the ordinary seam-up grip: two fingers either side of the seam, thumb resting underneath, ball held in the fingers rather than pushed back into the palm. Nothing about the grip is a variation, and that is the point. Every change to the grip changes the release, and the release is the thing being protected.
Holding the ball deeper in the hand slows it and drops it shorter. Splitting the fingers wider does the same and adds a chance of the seam wobbling. Both are legitimate ways to bowl a slower ball, and neither belongs anywhere near an attempted yorker, because they alter the one dial the bowler is trying to keep fixed.
Seam position matters for a different reason. A ball released with the seam upright and rotating backwards holds its line better and keeps its speed through the air, which reduces the variability of the landing point. A wobbling seam is a fine thing on a good length, where deviation off the pitch is worth something. At the base of the stumps there is almost no pitch left for the ball to deviate off, so an unstable seam buys nothing and costs consistency.
Swing is the exception worth planning for. A ball that swings in late arrives at the batter's feet on a line that started outside them, which is a harder ball to dig out than a straight one. The mechanics of getting an old ball to move in that direction are covered in the piece on reverse swing, and the reason bowlers value it in the closing overs is that it adds a second problem to a delivery that is already the hardest one to face.
The run-up decides the ball before the arm does
The commonest cause of a lost yorker is not in the arm. It is in the approach, because the approach determines where the front foot lands, and the front foot landing position sets both release height and release timing at once.
A stride that finishes longer than usual lowers the shoulder and delays the release, both of which flatten the trajectory. A stride that finishes shorter raises the release and hurries it, which digs the ball in. A bowler whose run-up has drifted by half a pace will find that his length has moved and that no amount of trying harder brings it back, because the fault happened three seconds before the ball left his hand.
The practical fix is boring and effective. Measure the run-up. Mark the take-off point rather than only the start. Watch the last three strides, which are the ones that gather and jump into the delivery stride, and check whether they are consistent when the bowler is fresh and when he is not. Fatigue shortens the approach and lengthens the final stride, which is exactly the combination that turns yorkers into low full tosses in the second half of a spell.
Bowling from a shortened run-up in practice is therefore worse than useless for this delivery. It rehearses a release the bowler will never use.
Front arm, front leg, and the instant the length is fixed
Once the delivery stride begins, three things determine the launch angle.
The front arm pulls down and across. It is the counterweight to the bowling arm, and the speed at which it comes down sets how fast the shoulders rotate. A front arm that stays high leaves the shoulders open and the bowling arm trailing, which delays the release and pushes the ball full. A front arm ripped down hard accelerates the rotation and can bring the release forward.
The front leg braces or it does not. A braced front leg gives the upper body something to rotate over, which lifts the release point and steepens the trajectory. A soft, collapsing front knee drops the whole body a few centimetres and takes the release point down with it, flattening the ball. This is why bowlers late in a long day start spraying full tosses: the leg that was holding them up has stopped holding.
The head goes where the ball is meant to go. This is not mysticism. Head position determines trunk angle, and trunk angle determines the plane the arm travels through. A bowler whose head falls away to the off side at release has tilted his arm plane, which changes both height and direction.
- Standing at the markThe aim point is chosen before the run-up starts: base of off stump, base of leg stump, or just inside the wide guideline. Changing it during the approach is the surest way to miss.
- The approachRhythm is the only job. A run-up that arrives fast and repeatable puts the take-off in the same place, which is what makes the next three steps reproducible.
- The gather and the last three stridesStride length is set here and cannot be corrected later. This is where fatigue and adrenaline do their damage, and where the yorker is usually lost.
- Front foot lands, front arm comes downRelease height is now fixed by how well the front leg braces. The shoulders begin to rotate over it.
- ReleaseThe ball leaves the hand within a window of a few hundredths of a second. Six tenths of a degree of launch angle separates the intended ball from a full toss.
- Flight and pitchNothing further can be done. The ball either lands in the target strip or it lands somewhere the batter has been waiting for.
- Follow-throughThe bowler's own read of where the ball landed relative to his aim point is the only feedback he gets before the next delivery.
The sequence and the point at which each element of the delivery becomes unchangeable.
Four yorkers, and they are four deliveries rather than one
The straight yorker aims at the base of off or middle stump. It demands the tightest accuracy of the four, because the margin either side is the width of the wicket, and its reward is that a miss by the batter is bowled rather than merely stopped. It is the ball for a batter who is standing still in his crease and for a bowler who trusts his line.
The wide yorker aims just inside the wide guideline, full and away from the batter's swing. It trades one risk for another: the punishment for going too wide is a run and a re-bowled ball rather than a boundary. The angled-in yorker from round the wicket starts wide of the stumps and finishes at the batter's feet from the other direction. It is aimed at the toes rather than the stumps, it cramps a batter who is trying to make room, and it is the standard answer to somebody who has been backing away to hit through the off side. Its risk is that a ball angled in and missed is heading down the leg side rather than into the stumps.
The yorker to the batter's feet as he advances is not really a separate ball, it is a separate decision. A bowler who sees the batter moving before release and follows him, aiming at where the feet will be, is doing the hardest version of all, and it is the version that most often ends up above waist height.
The target moves, and the batter is the one moving it
Any of the four is aimed at a point the batter can relocate.
A batter who steps back and to the leg side has widened the gap between himself and a straight yorker, turning it into a hittable full delivery outside off. A batter who charges has moved the intended landing point behind himself, turning the same ball into a full toss. A batter who shuffles across to the off side has covered the stumps and offered his pads instead.
The bowler's information problem is timing. The pre-delivery movement usually starts as the bowling arm comes over, which is roughly the moment the delivery becomes unchangeable. A bowler who reacts to the movement is reacting after his own decision has been made, and the attempt to correct mid-action is what produces the worst outcomes of all.
The two workable answers are both about disguise rather than reaction. The first is to delay the choice of aim point until the last possible instant that still allows a clean action, which in practice means holding the same run-up and only fixing width in the delivery stride. The second is to make the movement expensive, by bowling a short ball at a batter who has committed to walking down the pitch. The two no balls a yorker can produce
A yorker attempt can break the Laws in two directions, and only one of them is famous.
The front-foot no ball comes from over-reaching. A bowler chasing a fuller length often does it by stretching, and Law 21 requires some part of the front foot, grounded or raised, to be behind the popping crease. In limited-overs cricket that no ball also concedes a free hit, so the bowler pays twice.
The high full toss is the other, and it is governed by Law 41.7. A delivery that passes, or would have passed, above the waist height of the batter standing upright at the popping crease without pitching is unfair and is called no ball, whatever the bowler intended. The clause is about the batter's waist rather than the ball's height off the ground, which means the same delivery can be legal against a tall batter and illegal against a short one, and it means a batter who has crouched or moved does not lower the bar. Repeated offences bring the umpire's warning ladder into play.
Both of these are more likely on precisely the ball a bowler most wants to get right, which is the last delivery of a close match. A summary of the clauses that catch spectators out most often sits in the rundown of the Laws worth knowing.
The same ball in the longer formats, where the job changes
Almost everything written about this delivery assumes twenty overs and a batter swinging. In a first-class or Test innings the ball is being used for something else, and the technical priorities shift with it.
The first difference is the ball's condition. A yorker attempted with a hard new ball is a wicket-taking option against a batter who is stuck on the crease, but it is rarely worth the risk early, because a miss that lands full and straight is a half volley to a batter with all day to play it. The delivery becomes far more valuable once the ball is old enough to move in the air late, which is why it tends to appear in clusters when reverse swing arrives and again after the second new ball is taken.
The second is the target. In white-ball cricket the yorker is often aimed away from the stumps, because denying runs is the objective. In a red-ball innings the stumps are the objective, so the straight version dominates and the wide version is close to pointless. That raises the accuracy demand and lowers the tolerance for width.
The third is the batter. The delivery is used most often against the lower order, where the reasoning is not about power at all. A tail-ender's technical weakness is usually a slow or incomplete downswing, and the yorker attacks the swing rather than the judgement. It is also the standard follow-up to a short ball, because a batter who has just been made to duck has raised his hands and shifted his weight back, and both of those make the base of the stumps harder to protect.
The fourth is the price of the miss. A field with nobody on the boundary turns a low full toss into four runs rather than six, and turns a good shot into a fielding problem rather than a scoreboard event. The delivery is therefore cheaper to attempt in a long-form innings than in a short one, even though it is attempted far less often.
The technique does not change across formats. The run-up, the braced front leg and the release timing are the same three problems. What changes is how much a miss costs and what a hit is meant to achieve, and a bowler who has only ever practised the delivery as a containment tool will find the straight version harder than he expects the first time he is asked to bowl at a set of stumps rather than at a pair of boots.
Practice that transfers, and practice that does not
Three principles separate useful yorker practice from the kind that feels productive and changes nothing.
Practise at match pace off the full run. The release a bowler uses at three quarters pace is a different release. Reps at reduced effort build a length that vanishes the moment the effort goes up.
Use a physical target and count hits. A shoe, a cone or a taped rectangle in the landing zone converts a vague instruction into a binary outcome. Counting hits out of a set number of balls creates a score that can be tracked across weeks, and the score is the only reliable evidence that anything is improving.
Add the conditions that break it. Bowl the target set after a fitness block rather than before, so the braced front leg is being tested in the state it will actually be in. Put a batter in who moves before delivery. Ask for a specific aim point out loud before each ball, so the bowler is rehearsing the decision as well as the action.
The fourth principle is negative and matters as much. Do not spend a whole session on it. Yorkers punish a tiring action, and once the front leg starts collapsing the bowler is grooving the fault rather than the skill. Short target sets scattered through a week beat one long session.
Diagnosing a missed yorker from the ball you just bowled
Length errors have signatures, and a bowler who can read his own miss can correct it in one delivery rather than one over.

The habit worth building is to name the miss before the next ball is bowled. A bowler who says the word "flat" to himself and shortens his final stride has corrected in one delivery. A bowler who simply resolves to try harder has usually just added effort to a fault.
When not to bowl it
The yorker is not the default answer to every situation, and treating it as one is a tactical error rather than a technical one.
Against a batter who has set himself deep in his crease and is looking to scoop, the delivery is being aimed at the shot he has chosen. Against a batter new to the crease, a good length ball is the higher-percentage choice, because the yorker's downside is enormous and its upside is smallest against somebody who is not yet swinging freely. On a slow, low pitch a full ball skids on and is hard to elevate, which raises its value; on a hard, true surface with a fast outfield, a miss travels a long way.
The field also votes. A ring of protection on the leg side and two out behind square supports one aim point; a leg side that has been emptied supports another. What to watch when a bowler goes for it
Watch the length of the final stride against the same bowler's earlier overs. A visibly longer one is the tell that the ball is about to be too full.
Watch the wicketkeeper's starting position. A keeper standing tight and low is expecting the ball at the base of the stumps, and a keeper who has taken half a step back has been told something else is coming.
Watch the batter's feet as the arm comes over rather than as the ball arrives. A batter who has already moved has changed the length before the ball is released, and the bowler is now aiming at a place nobody is standing.
Watch where the ball actually pitches rather than where it ends up. A delivery that produced no run may still have been a miss by half a metre, and a delivery hit for four may have landed exactly where it was aimed and been beaten by a good shot. Judging a bowler by outcome instead of by landing point is the most common mistake spectators make about this delivery.
The ball itself is unglamorous to learn and slow to acquire, and the bowlers who own it did not find a secret grip. What length is a yorker in cricket?
A yorker pitches at or very close to the batter's feet, in the patch of ground between the popping crease and the base of the stumps, which is a strip a little over a metre deep. The Laws do not define it, because they never define lengths at all. In practice bowlers aim at a zone of a few tens of centimetres and treat anything landing outside it as a miss.
How do you bowl a yorker consistently?
By fixing the two things that set length, which are the height the ball leaves the hand and the point in the arm's rotation at which it is released, and then rehearsing them at full pace rather than at half pace. Why do bowlers bowl full tosses when they try to bowl yorkers?
Because the launch angle separating a yorker from a full toss is under a degree in a simple projectile model, so any change that flattens the trajectory slightly turns one into the other. A longer stride, a dropped shoulder or a marginally later release all flatten it. That is why the failure under pressure is almost always fuller rather than shorter.
Is a yorker a no ball if it does not bounce?
Only if it passes, or would have passed, above the waist height of the batter standing upright at the popping crease. Law 41.7 makes that delivery unfair and it is called no ball. A full toss below waist height is legal, however badly it was intended, though in limited-overs cricket any no ball also concedes a free hit.
What is the best way to practise yorkers?
