How the Tour de France jerseys work, and what each one means

The Tour de France jerseys explained properly: what yellow, green, polka dot and white actually count, how the classifications are scored, and who wears what.

The green jersey is on a rider who finished eleventh. The polka dot jersey is on a rider who was dropped on the final climb. The man in yellow has not won a stage and is not the fastest rider in the race. All three of those things can be true on the same afternoon, and the television coverage will explain none of them, because the classifications underneath the jerseys get treated as decoration rather than as the scoring system of the sport.

It is four separate competitions run over the same road at the same time, plus a couple of minor ones, and the jerseys are only the daily read-out. Once you know what each ledger counts, you can watch a breakaway go clear and know immediately which of the four it threatens and which it does not touch at all.

This is how each classification is scored, how the day's finish turns into the next morning's jersey allocation, and the handful of rules underneath that separate watching the race from understanding it.

The Tour de France jerseys explained in ninety seconds

Four jerseys. Four ledgers. One road.

Yellow goes to the rider with the lowest cumulative time. Add up every stage he has finished, compare the total with everybody else's, lowest wins. The colour is an advertising decision that outlived its advertiser: the newspaper that founded the race printed on yellow paper.

Green goes to the rider with the most points, collected by finishing near the front of stages and by contesting one designated intermediate sprint on each road stage.

Polka dot, white with red spots, goes to the rider with the most mountains points, collected by being among the first over categorised climbs.

White goes to the best-placed rider inside the race's age limit, measured on exactly the same cumulative time as yellow.

The important thing about all four is that nobody owns them. A jersey is a loan. You wear it tomorrow because you lead today, and you hand it back the moment somebody else leads, which for the yellow jersey can happen on a mountain road in the space of about four minutes.

Yellow measures time, and nothing else

The general classification is the simplest scoring system in major sport and the one most consistently misdescribed. There are no points in it. There is no consistency bonus, no reward for aggression, no credit for winning a stage beyond the time you actually gained by winning it.

Each rider is given a finishing time for every stage. Those times are added up. The rider with the smallest total wears yellow. That is the whole rule.

What makes it subtle is the way times are recorded on a road stage, which is covered further down, and which has one enormous consequence: the vast majority of riders in the vast majority of stages are given identical times. If two hundred riders arrive together, two hundred riders get the same time, and the general classification does not move a second. A flat stage can be raced at brutal speed for five hours and change nothing at all.

Time trials are the exception. There, everybody is timed individually to the fraction of a second, and a discipline that appears twice or three times in a Tour can produce more general classification movement than a fortnight of road racing. This is why a rider who cannot climb with the best can still lead a grand tour into the second week, and why the calendar position of the time trial shapes how the whole race is ridden.

The rest of the movement comes from selection: crosswinds that split the bunch, a climb steep enough that riders come off in ones and twos, a descent taken at a pace some cannot hold. Every one of those produces genuine gaps, and every gap is added to a running total that never resets.

Time bonuses, and why the first week's yellow jersey is borrowed

Sitting on top of the cumulative time is a second mechanism that behaves nothing like it: bonus seconds.

The organisers award time bonuses to the leading finishers of road stages, deducted from their cumulative time rather than added to anybody else's. Some editions also place a bonus on the road, part-way up a selected climb or at a designated point, so that riders will race for it rather than wait for the finish. The exact values, how many riders they reach and where they are offered are set by the organiser and published in the regulations for that edition, which is why they are worth reading each year instead of assuming.

The mechanism produces two effects, and they pull in opposite directions.

On the opening days it decides everything. If the general classification is untouched because the whole bunch finished together, the only differences between the leading riders are the bonuses handed out at the line. A sprinter who wins the first stage is the race leader by the width of a bonus, and he stays there until the road tilts. This is the reason the yellow jersey rotates through half a dozen shoulders in week one and then sits still for a fortnight.

In the third week it becomes a tactic. A general classification rider who is a handful of seconds down does not need to drop his rival on a mountain; he needs to beat him to the line for the bonus, twice. That reframes the last two kilometres of a summit finish from a test of climbing into a sprint between exhausted men, and it is why teams will spend a domestique's entire day setting up a lead-out for a gain measured in single-figure seconds. Whether that spend is worth it is exactly the sort of calculation that runs through the way a team rides a grand tour, where every rider burned today is a rider missing on the stage that actually decides the race.

Why the race leader is often not the strongest rider

Because the general classification is cumulative, it is also path-dependent, and paths in bike racing are messy.

A rider can take a large lead by getting into a breakaway that the favourites decided not to chase. That happens because chasing costs a team the entire strength of its squad, and a team will let a rider go up the road if it believes he cannot climb well enough to keep the time he is gaining. Sometimes that judgement is wrong. More often it is right, and the lead evaporates on the first serious mountain, but for four or five days a rider with no chance of winning the race is the race leader, and the coverage will describe him as such because he is.

There is also a positive reason to give the jersey away. Leading is expensive. The team in yellow is expected to control the race: ride on the front, set the tempo, close the moves, manage the gap to the break. That work is done by the domestiques, and it is done every day. A team with a genuine contender will sometimes be quietly delighted to hand the jersey to a rival for a week and let somebody else's riders do the chasing, taking it back when it matters. Which riders a team can afford to spend on that job is decided months earlier, in the way the eight names are picked.

And the yellow jersey does not need to finish first on any stage. Not one, all race. A rider who takes second or third on every hard day, never cracks, never crashes, and rides a competent time trial can arrive at the final finish with the lowest total having never crossed a line first. It is a total, not a tally of wins, and there is no clause anywhere that says the winner must have won something.

Read it left to right and the structure of a three-week race is visible. Between stage one and stage five, nothing happens: two flat days, two bunch finishes, identical times, and the only separation is the bonus seconds Rider A took on the opening day. The time trial produces a gap larger than anything the first week managed. Then the mountains hand it back in pieces, and the lead changes on stage seventeen without anybody ever being more than about a minute apart.

Green is not a sprinters' jersey by definition

Read the rule and there is nothing about sprinting in it. The points classification goes to the rider with the highest points total, and points come from finishing positions. That is all it says.

It becomes a sprinters' competition through arithmetic, in three steps.

First, the points on offer vary by stage type. A flat stage designed for a bunch finish carries the largest award to its winner. A hilly stage carries less. A high mountain stage and an individual time trial carry less again. The organiser classifies every stage in advance and publishes the table, so everybody knows at the start of the race exactly where the points are.

Second, the scale tapers a long way down the finishing order on the biggest-paying days. It is not winner-takes-all. A rider who is fifth on a flat stage still scores meaningfully, and a rider who is eleventh still scores something. Over ten flat stages, a fast finisher who never wins a single one can accumulate a total that a rider with two stage wins cannot match.

Third, and this is the part that settles it, there are simply more finishes a sprinter can contest than there are finishes a climber can contest. A pure climber can only score at mountain finishes, which pay the least. A sprinter can score at every flat and hilly stage, which pay the most, and he can score at the intermediate sprints on the mountain days as well if he is willing to work for them.

Put those together and the jersey lands on a sprinter almost every year, without the rule ever mentioning sprinting. Where it does not is instructive: an edition with few flat finishes, or one where the sprinters get shelled in the mountains and go home, tends to produce a green jersey worn by a rider who is quick enough to place and durable enough to survive. That rider type wins the classification precisely because the arithmetic stopped favouring specialists.

The intermediate sprint is where green is actually decided

Each road stage carries a designated intermediate sprint at a fixed point on the course, marked in the road book and known to everybody weeks in advance. Points are awarded to the leading riders across that line, deep enough into the order that a large group of riders can score.

This is the most underexplained thing in the race.

On a flat stage the intermediate sprint is contested at full speed a long way from the finish, with lead-out trains assembling and dissolving for a prize nobody watching at home has been told about. On a mountain stage it is usually taken by the breakaway, which is why a green jersey contender will send a teammate up the road with instructions to sit up after the sprint, or will drag himself across a mountain pass just to lead the bunch over a line with no finish behind it.

The reason is that the intermediate sprint is the only points source that appears on every single road stage regardless of terrain. Stage finishes pay well but only on the days that suit you. The intermediate sprint pays on all of them. A rider who takes points there consistently, including on days he has no interest in the finish, builds a total his rivals cannot construct from wins alone.

The shape is the argument. Even for a rider whose living is made at flat finishes, the intermediate sprints are not a rounding error, and they are collected on days he has no chance of winning. A rival who ignores them starts every flat stage needing to beat him by a substantial margin just to stand still.

How a climb becomes a category, and why the hardest are worth so much more

The mountains classification scores riders for crossing the top of a categorised climb near the front. Everything therefore depends on which climbs are categorised, and at what.

Climbs are graded from category four, the mildest, up through three, two and one, and then beyond that to hors catégorie, meaning outside the categories entirely. The grading is set by the organiser before the race and printed in the road book. It reflects the length of the climb, its average and maximum gradient, the altitude at the summit, and where the climb falls in the stage, since the same hill is harder after two hundred kilometres than after twenty and is sometimes upgraded accordingly.

That last part matters more than people expect. Categorisation is a judgement, made in advance by the people organising the race, and it is not appealable. There is no published formula that converts metres and per cents into a category. It sits closer to a race director's call than to the auditable rulebooks that govern something like what a Formula 1 team is allowed to spend, and a rider's three-week plan can be reshaped by where a line was drawn on a profile in a meeting he was not in.

The points scale then does two things at once. It pays more to the first rider over a harder climb, and it pays down to more places. A category four climb is effectively a prize for one rider. An hors catégorie summit is a prize for a queue of them. On top of that, the regulations single out certain summit finishes for doubled points, on the reasoning that the hardest climb of the hardest day should not be worth the same as an identical mountain sitting in the middle of a stage.

These values are invented and set on a doubling scale to illustrate how steeply the progression rises. The real table pays different numbers and reaches further down the finishing order on the harder categories. It is published each year in the race regulations.

The scaling is the whole design. If the categories paid evenly, the jersey would go to whoever crossed the most speed bumps, and a rider could win it on a diet of category four lumps in the first week. Because the progression is steep, one big mountain outweighs a pile of small ones, and the competition stays anchored to the parts of the race that are actually hard.

Steep is not infinite, though, and this is where the interesting distortion lives.

Why a breakaway specialist usually wins the polka dot jersey

The mountains points are on the road, not at the finish line. That single fact decides who wins the classification, and it is the thing coverage most reliably fails to say.

A general classification climber rides mountain stages a particular way. His team sets a hard, even tempo to burn off rivals, he stays on the wheel, and he attacks late, often on the final climb and often inside the last few kilometres. That approach wins bike races. It scores mountains points on exactly one climb per day, the last one, and only if he is first over it.

A breakaway rider rides the same stage completely differently. He goes clear early, and on a mountain stage he then crosses the top of the first climb first, the second climb first, the third climb first, and possibly the fourth, all before the general classification group has done anything more strenuous than eat. He may be caught on the final climb and finish twenty minutes down. His points are already banked.

Do that on three or four mountain stages and the total becomes very hard to beat with two summit-finish wins, even doubled ones. The classification rewards presence and repetition, and presence is available to anybody willing to spend themselves on days their overall position no longer matters.

Which is precisely why teams target it deliberately. The polka dot jersey is a three-week objective that does not require a top-ten finish, does not require a sprinter, and can be pursued by a rider whose general classification hopes ended on day nine. For a smaller squad it is one of the few realistic returns from a grand tour and it justifies the invitation, so the roster is often built with a rider in mind for it. That calculation is part of how a grand tour eight is assembled in the first place.

The cost is brutal. Winning the jersey this way means getting into the breakaway on most mountain days, and getting into a breakaway at this level is itself an hour of racing at close to maximum before the day's actual work begins. It is the least glamorous way to win a famous jersey and it is the way it is most often won.

White is the general classification with an age filter

The young rider classification is the easiest of the four to explain, because it is not a separate calculation at all.

Take the general classification. Delete every rider outside the age limit. Whoever is top of what remains wears white. There is no separate timing, no bonus, no adjustment. A young rider's white jersey position and his overall position are computed from one identical set of times.

The age limit is defined in the regulations by year of birth rather than by a birthday during the race, which in practice means riders who are twenty-five or under in the year of the edition. The exact wording is worth reading in the current rules, because defining it by birth year rather than by age on a given date is what stops it changing mid-race.

Two consequences follow. If the race leader is inside the age limit, he leads both classifications, and the white jersey gets worn by somebody else under the rule covered next. And because the classification measures nothing the general classification does not already measure, its real value is as a signal rather than a competition: it tells teams, sponsors and the rider himself where he sits against a peer group, at the age when contract length and workload decisions are being made. Those decisions are increasingly argued with training files, which is a separate and frequently misread conversation about what a power meter is actually recording.

When one rider leads two classifications, who wears what

This is the rule that makes the television picture disagree with the result sheet, and it is simple once stated.

The jerseys have a seniority order: yellow, then green, then polka dot, then white. A rider who leads two classifications wears the more senior of the two. He keeps both leads. He is credited with both. He only has one torso.

The junior jersey is then worn on the road by the next rider down in that classification. That rider does not lead it. He has not taken it. He wins nothing for wearing it and he hands it back the instant the actual leader stops leading. The jersey is on his back purely so the colour is visible in the bunch and the competition stays legible to spectators, which is a surprisingly honest reason for a rule to exist.

The same order of precedence overrides everything else a rider might otherwise wear, including national champion's colours and the rainbow bands of a world champion. A leader's jersey outranks them all for as long as it is held.

So when a commentator says a rider is "in the white jersey today", that may mean he leads the young rider classification, or it may mean the leader is in yellow and this is the second-placed young rider filling in. The result sheet is the authority. The road is only the display.

The team classification, and the yellow race numbers nobody mentions

There is a fifth competition and it does not have a jersey.

The team classification is calculated by taking the three best individual times from each team on each stage and adding them together, then accumulating those daily totals across the race. Lowest aggregate leads. The leading team is marked by yellow race numbers on its riders, and often yellow helmets, rather than by a jersey of its own.

It is a genuinely different test from the general classification because it cannot be won by one rider. A squad with a race winner and seven riders finishing in the last group on the road will not lead it. It rewards teams whose second and third options are strong enough to finish near the front repeatedly, which is close to a measurement of squad depth.

It also has a fragility built into it. Because it needs three finishers per team per stage, a squad that loses riders to crashes, illness or the time limit can find its third-best time coming from a rider who is nowhere, and the classification runs away from it in a single afternoon. Teams rarely build a Tour around it. They notice it when a sponsor does.

The combativity award is one jury's opinion, and that is the point

The last thing handed out each day is the combativity prize, decided by a jury rather than by a calculation. The winner wears a red race number on the following stage.

Everything else in this article is arithmetic. This one deliberately is not. It exists to reward the rider who made the race happen, which is usually the rider who attacked, stayed out for a hundred and fifty kilometres and got caught with six to go. No formula captures that, and a formula that tried would be gamed inside a season.

The trade-off is the obvious one. A subjective award is arguable by design, and arguing about it is part of the entertainment. It sits at the opposite end of the scale from a purely mechanical system like the points formula behind the tennis rankings, where the number is computable by anybody holding the results and there is nothing left to debate except whether the formula is the right one. An overall combativity award is decided at the end of the race, from among the daily winners.

How time is taken on a sprint stage, and the safety rule behind it

Now the mechanism that makes the general classification behave the way it does.

When a group of riders finishes together, they are all given the time of the first rider in that group. Groups are separated by the commissaires using the finish video, and the test is a measurable gap between one rider's rear wheel and the next rider's front wheel, expressed in seconds and defined in the regulations. Fall inside that gap and you are in the same group, on the same time, regardless of whether you were second or fiftieth. Fall outside it and a new group starts, with its own time.

This is why a bunch sprint is simultaneously the most dangerous and the least consequential moment of a stage for a general classification rider. The result matters enormously to about fifteen riders and not at all to the other hundred and fifty, who are given an identical time to the winner and go to the hotel with their overall position untouched.

Layered on top is the finish-safety provision, and it is one of the better rules in sport.

Inside a defined distance from the finish, announced for each stage, a rider held up by a crash or a mechanical failure is given the time of the group he was in when it happened. He does not lose the seconds the incident cost him. The distance is set by the organiser and can be extended when a finish is judged especially dangerous, with the extension announced in advance.

The reason is behavioural rather than sentimental. Without the rule, every general classification contender would have to fight for position in the final kilometres of a sprint he has no intention of contesting, because a crash in front of him would cost him real time. That means eight extra teams driving into a chicane at sixty kilometres an hour for no sporting purpose whatsoever. The rule removes the incentive, and it removes it exactly where the bunch is at its most compressed and least controllable. Whether it is fully effective is a fair argument, because the fight for position also serves the sprinters' own teams, and positioning in a bunch is a physical problem with its own aerodynamic logic that no regulation can repeal.

Two limits are worth knowing. The provision does not apply to time trials, where every rider is racing alone against the clock and there is no group time to inherit. And it is disapplied on stages where the finish is genuinely selective, typically an uphill finish, because there the last kilometres are the race rather than a queue for it. On those days, if you lose the wheel, you lose the time.

One more nuance that is routinely missed: the rule restores the time, not the result. A rider held up by a crash keeps his group's time on the general classification, but he does not get the finishing position he might have had, and he does not get the points that go with it. A green jersey contender caught behind a crash inside the final kilometre loses nothing in yellow terms and can lose the points classification.

The time cut, or how to be eliminated for finishing

Every stage has a time limit. Cross the line after it and you are not merely last, you are out of the race, and out of every classification in it.

The limit is calculated from the winner's time plus a percentage. The percentage is not fixed: it varies according to the stage's profile and a difficulty coefficient assigned in advance, so a mountain stage won at a savage average speed allows a wider margin than a flat stage rolled around in five hours. Time trials have their own limits on the same principle.

The rule exists for one reason. Without it, riders with no interest in the mountains would soft-pedal every alpine stage at touring pace to conserve themselves for the flat days, and the mountain stages would finish four hours after the winner. The time cut forces everybody in the race to actually race, or at least to suffer at a defined rate.

What it produces is one of the sport's quietly impressive sights: the gruppetto, the large cooperative group of sprinters, lead-out riders and the wounded that forms on the first big climb and rides the rest of the stage together. It is not a social arrangement. It is a calculation. Experienced riders estimate the winner's likely finishing time, apply the percentage, work out the average speed required and ride at it, sharing the pace, all day, with the margin recalculated every time a radio reports the gap. Miss by a minute and a rider's Tour ends on a valley road with nobody watching.

The commissaires hold discretion, and they use it. When a large group finishes outside the limit together, eliminating all of them would gut the race, remove most of the sprinters and wreck the second week for the organiser and the broadcaster alike. Reinstatement is permitted, and it can come with a penalty attached, typically a deduction from the points classification, which is a neat piece of design: the riders most likely to be saved are exactly the ones who care about green.

The other consequence is one people forget. Elimination is total. A rider leading the points classification who misses the cut in the mountains does not merely stop scoring, he ceases to be in the competition, and the jersey passes to whoever is next. Surviving the third week is a precondition of winning anything, including competitions decided on flat roads a fortnight earlier.

Ties, abandons, and the jersey that changes hands overnight

Ties happen, and each classification has its own sequence for breaking them.

For the general classification, the first tiebreak reaches for the fractions of seconds recorded in time trials, which are otherwise rounded away. If riders are still level, the regulations move to the sum of their stage placings, and then to their position on the most recent stage. It is a hierarchy applied in order, and it is why time trial timing is kept to hundredths that are never displayed on screen.

The points and mountains classifications break ties differently, on the reasonable principle that winning should count for more than accumulating. Stage wins come first, then wins at the relevant scoring points, then general classification position as the final resort.

Abandons are handled by simple reindexing. When a rider leaves the race, whether he climbs off, misses the cut or is disqualified, every classification he was in closes over the gap and the next rider inherits. If it was a jersey he was wearing, the new leader is wearing it at the start of the next stage. There is no ceremony for it and often no announcement, which is how a rider can be presented on a podium one evening and be irrelevant to the same competition by breakfast.

The order matters. Each step feeds the next, and the jersey allocation is the last thing settled, not the first.

The Tour de France jerseys explained by watching one stage

Take all of it to a single mountain stage and the day reads differently.

At kilometre zero, the fight to get into the breakaway is not one contest but three. Somebody in there wants the stage. Somebody wants the mountains points from the first four climbs, and you can identify him because he will lead over each summit and then sit up. And somebody has been sent by a sprinter's team to take the intermediate sprint points before the bunch arrives, at which point he will drift back through the convoy having done his entire day's work in two hours.

When the gap to the break is announced, the only number that matters is the gap measured against the best-placed rider in it on general classification. If the highest-placed escapee is forty minutes down, the yellow jersey's team will let the gap grow to eight minutes without blinking. If he is four minutes down, the same eight minutes is an emergency, and the tempo on the front changes within a kilometre of the time check.

At the intermediate sprint, watch the bunch rather than the break. If the green jersey contenders are fighting each other for the scraps left behind by the escapees, that classification is close. If nobody moves, it is not.

On the final climb the competitions come apart. The mountains points at the top are settled between whoever is left of the break. The bonus seconds at the line are settled between two or three general classification riders who have stopped racing the stage and started racing each other for a handful of seconds. Both can be happening simultaneously, four minutes apart on the road, and the commentary will usually be describing only one of them.

Then the finish, where three groups arrive: the front of the race, the general classification group, and the gruppetto, riding a calculated pace an hour later against a limit somebody worked out on the first climb.

Can a rider win the Tour de France without winning a stage?

Yes, and it has happened. The general classification is decided by the lowest total elapsed time, not by stage victories, so a rider who finishes second or third on the hard days and never loses time can end up with the smallest total. Being first across the line matters only insofar as it produces time gaps and time bonuses.

What happens if one rider leads two classifications at the same time?
