The opening partnership in cricket: what openers are for
Why the first pair bats first: the new ball problem, the leave, left and right combinations, powerplay maths and how the opener's job changes by format.

Two men walk out through a gate while the fielding side is still arranging itself, and for the next hour the game will be played on terms nobody in the batting side chose. Three slips, a gully, a ball with the shine on both sides, a bowler who has been waiting all morning. An opening partnership in cricket is the only stand in an innings where both the conditions and the opposition are at their most hostile by design, and where the job is defined as much by what the pair prevents as by what it produces.
The purpose is simple to state and hard to do. The opening pair exists to absorb the new ball, to give the innings a platform in overs faced rather than only in runs scored, and, in the shorter formats, to convert a period of restricted fielding into runs the middle order cannot make later. Everything about how openers are selected, how they play and how they should be judged follows from those three jobs, and the weighting between them changes completely depending on whether the match lasts twenty overs or five days.

The three jobs an opening pair is actually doing
Separate the roles before arguing about them, because most disagreements about openers are really disagreements about which job somebody is measuring.
The first job is absorption. A new ball behaves differently from an old one, and somebody has to face it. Whoever does is batting in the least favourable conditions the innings will offer, which means the runs they score are worth more per run than the same runs made an hour later, and their dismissals are cheaper for the fielding side to obtain.
The second job is transfer. An opening partnership does not only make runs; it hands the next batter a specific situation. Overs faced, shine gone, bowlers into their second spell, field spread. A pair that scores forty in twenty overs has handed over something quite different from a pair that scores forty in eight, and neither is automatically better. The transfer is the output.
The third job, in limited overs cricket only, is exploitation. For a fixed number of overs the fielding captain may keep only two men outside the circle, and that window will not return. Runs made under that restriction are cheaper than runs made against a spread field, and a pair that fails to take them has left value on the table even if it survives.
Test openers are graded almost entirely on the first two. Twenty over openers are graded almost entirely on the third, with the first two acting as constraints. One day openers are asked for all three at once, which is why the fifty over game has produced the most argued-about opening roles in cricket.
Why the new ball is genuinely harder, and for how long
The phrase "seeing off the new ball" gets used as though it were a ritual. It describes something physical.
A new cricket ball is harder than an old one, which means it comes off the pitch faster and carries further to the fielders behind the bat. Its seam stands proud and stiff, so a delivery landing on the seam deviates more than the same delivery landing on a worn one. Its surface is still lacquered and its shine is symmetrical, which is the condition under which conventional swing works: air moving differently over a smooth side and a rougher side, with the seam angled to steer it. All three properties decay, and they decay at different rates on different surfaces.
The hardness fades first, over perhaps fifteen to twenty overs on an abrasive square and considerably more on a soft, grassy one. The shine goes next, at a rate the fielding side spends a great deal of effort trying to control. The seam flattens last, and a ball with a proud seam remains dangerous long after it has stopped swinging.
What that means for an opening pair is that the difficulty curve is steep and short rather than gradual. The first ten overs are not slightly harder than overs eleven to twenty; they are a different examination. An opener who is beaten four times in his first twenty balls and then middles everything has not suddenly improved. The ball has changed. Pitch type moves all of this. A hard, dry surface takes the hardness out of a ball quickly and rewards an opener who can wait. A green seaming surface keeps the ball hard and offers sideways movement for longer, and the openers' window of maximum danger stretches accordingly. The Test opener's job: overs faced is the currency
In the five day game the opening partnership is measured in a unit the scoreboard barely shows.
A side that loses both openers inside the first hour has not merely lost two wickets. It has sent its best middle order player in against a ball that is still hard, against bowlers who are still fresh, with a full cordon behind the bat. The value the openers failed to deliver was not runs, it was overs, and the middle order pays for the shortfall in exactly the conditions it was selected to avoid.
That is why a Test opener who makes thirty from ninety balls has often done more for his side than one who makes forty from forty. The slower innings has taken the shine off, tired a bowler, and delivered the number three into a different match. The quicker one has not. The distinction between an innings' size and its shape is one of the reasons a batting average on its own explains so little, an argument we set out in our comparison of what averages and strike rates each actually measure.
None of that means Test openers should be slow. The best modern opening pairs score at a healthy rate, because scoring pressure is itself a defence: a bowler who has to protect a boundary cannot keep six men in catching positions. The point is that the rate is a means rather than the objective, and an opener who blocks for two hours without ever putting a bowler under pressure eventually gets out anyway, having achieved nothing beyond delaying the same problem.

The leave, and why it is an attacking act
Nothing separates a good opener from a good middle order batter more reliably than judgment outside off stump.
The corridor is the region where a ball is close enough to play at and far enough away to miss. A ball pitched there and moving away invites a shot that ends in the cordon; the same ball left alone costs nothing at all. Deciding, ball by ball, which category a delivery falls into is the core technical skill of opening the batting, and it depends on knowing where your off stump is without looking at it.
The leave does more than avoid a dismissal. It denies the bowler information and it denies him rhythm. A bowler who beats the bat gets feedback; a bowler whose deliveries are being ignored gets nothing, and the pressure to bowl straighter builds ball by ball. A straighter ball is a scoring ball. An opening pair that leaves well is manufacturing the deliveries it will later hit, which is why the leave belongs in the attacking half of the ledger rather than the defensive one.
The mechanics that support it are unglamorous. Playing the ball late, under the eyes, rather than pushing at it early. A trigger movement that gets the front foot and the head moving in the same direction rather than across the line. A grip and backlift that let the bat come down close to the body so an edge, when it comes, carries into the ground rather than to second slip. Openers spend more of their practice time on this than on anything they will be applauded for.
Left and right: what a mixed pair actually disrupts
Captains prefer to bowl at one kind of batter for a while, and a pair of opposite handedness stops them.
The mechanical effect is about lines and footmarks. A right arm seamer bowling from over the wicket attacks a right hander's off stump from one angle and a left hander's from the other, and the field that suits one does not suit the other. Every single run rotates the strike and forces an adjustment, and the adjustment costs a bowler the rhythm he has spent four deliveries establishing. Over a long spell it also costs the fielding side time, which in a Test has consequences of its own.
The rough matters more as a match ages. The area a bowler's follow-through scuffs into the pitch sits outside a right hander's leg stump and outside a left hander's off stump, or the reverse, depending on the angle. A pair using both hands makes it harder for a bowler to bowl into his own footmarks and harder for a spinner to build a plan around them.
The effect is real without being decisive. No side picks a worse batter to obtain it, and plenty of outstanding opening partnerships have consisted of two batters of the same hand. Treat it as a tiebreaker in selection rather than a principle.
Running, calling and the chemistry that gets undervalued
Opening partnerships develop a way of running that other pairs do not, because they spend more time together against the field settings where singles are hardest to find.
With a ring of catchers in, the gaps are small and the risk of a quick single is high, which means the calling has to be immediate and unambiguous. Established pairs work out who calls in front of the wicket and who calls behind, they learn each other's speed between the wickets, and they build a shared vocabulary for the half-run that turns a defensive push into a single when the fielder is slow.
The value is not sentimental. Rotating strike against a new ball breaks up the bowler's plan more effectively than almost anything else, because a plan built for one batter has to be abandoned mid-over. It also stops either batter getting bogged down, which is when openers tend to play the loose shot that ends the stand.
The cost of poor running between openers is disproportionate. A run out inside the first ten overs takes a wicket the bowlers did not earn and delivers the middle order into precisely the conditions the pair was there to absorb.
The one day opening partnership: ten overs of licence
Fifty over cricket gives an opening pair a defined window and then takes it away.
For the first ten overs of the innings the fielding side may keep only two men outside the thirty yard circle. That is a substantial restriction, and it means every ball that beats the ring is worth four rather than one. From the eleventh over the allowance rises to four, and for the last ten it rises again to five. The opening partnership therefore has a genuine dilemma rather than a preference. Attack the restriction and risk both openers, or protect the wickets and reach the eleventh over with the resource intact but the cheap runs unclaimed. The answer depends on the surface, the total the side is chasing or setting, and the depth of the batting behind.
Ball regulations shape this too, and they have moved. For over a decade one day internationals used two new balls, one from each end, which meant neither ball ever became genuinely old and reverse swing effectively disappeared from the format. From 2025 the ICC changed the arrangement: two balls are used until the end of the thirty-fourth over, after which the fielding side picks one of them to use from both ends for the remainder. The practical consequence for an opening pair is that the ball it faces in the first ten overs is still a hard, new one from either end, while the ball the middle order faces at the death is now older and likelier to move. T20 openers and the argument about the anchor
The twenty over game compresses everything and turns the opening partnership into the most scrutinised six overs in cricket.
Two fielders outside the circle for six overs, out of twenty. That is close to a third of the innings played under the maximum restriction, and it will never be repeated. A pair that gets through the powerplay without using it has spent the most valuable overs of the innings on survival, and the middle order has to make up the difference against a spread field, which is arithmetically harder.
That pushes strongly towards aggression, and the modern game has moved decisively in that direction. The counterweight is that wickets in hand are what fund acceleration at the death: a side four down at the halfway mark cannot attack the way a side one down can, whatever the field is doing. A pair that blazes twenty balls and both departs has bought runs with the very resource the closing overs need.
The anchor debate sits exactly here. One camp argues that a batter who occupies an end at a modest rate is a net cost in a format this short. The other argues that somebody has to be there in the seventeenth over, and that the value of a set batter with the field spread is systematically undercounted. Both are describing real effects, and the honest answer is that the correct balance depends on the pitch and on who is batting at five and six.
What is no longer seriously argued is the old idea that a T20 opening pair should aim to survive the powerplay. Survival is a constraint, not an objective. The objective is to convert restricted overs into runs at a rate the rest of the innings cannot match.
What analysis changed about picking and using openers
Three things have shifted in how sides think about the top of the order, and all three come from measurement rather than from fashion.
The first is that dismissals are now counted by delivery number rather than by innings. Once a side can see that a particular opener is repeatedly getting out between his tenth and twenty-fifth ball, and to a particular length, the coaching problem becomes specific. It also gives selectors a defensible reason to keep faith with a player who is surviving the hard part and failing later, which is a different and more fixable problem from one who cannot get in at all.
The second is matchup selection. Sides now know which bowler types trouble which batters, and they open the bowling accordingly. A captain who opens with a spinner in a twenty over game is not being eccentric; he has looked at what the opposition's opening pair does against spin inside the powerplay and concluded that his best chance sits there. The third is phase-based selection in the short formats. Where a side once picked its two best batters and told them to open, franchise teams increasingly pick a powerplay specialist whose job description ends at the sixth over. That player may have a modest overall record and still be exactly right, because he is being asked to do one thing in one window. What none of this has changed is the basic examination. Analysis tells a side which openers to pick and when to attack them. It does not make the first twenty balls any easier to face.
Why the position is so hard to fill
Sides across the world find openers harder to replace than any other batting position, and the reasons are structural rather than accidental.
Selection is the first problem. The domestic evidence for an opener is gathered against different conditions from the ones he will face internationally, and a player who has scored heavily on flat surfaces against gentle seam has not yet been examined on the thing that will decide his career. The second problem is that the job punishes the same technical flaw repeatedly. A middle order batter with a loose drive can go months without being found out, because he arrives when the ball is old and the field is spread. An opener with the same flaw is examined by it four times an over. The position offers no hiding place and very little variance to hide behind, so a small weakness compounds into a run of low scores far faster than it would anywhere else.
The third is temperamental and gets talked about vaguely, so it is worth being concrete. Openers fail in public, immediately, at the start of a day, in front of a full ground, and then have to sit and watch for six hours. The recovery cycle is unlike anything a bowler or a middle order player experiences, and sides that develop good openers tend to be sides that have found a way to make repeated early failure survivable rather than career-ending.
There is a fourth consideration that only applies in the short formats, which is that opening is now sometimes a job for a wicketkeeper. A keeper who opens is a squad-building efficiency: one slot delivering two specialisms, which frees a place for another bowler. Setting a total against chasing one
The same opening pair should not bat the same way in both innings, and the difference is bigger than most commentary allows.
Batting first, an opening partnership is working with incomplete information. Nobody knows what a good total is, so the pair is estimating, and the estimate is usually built from the surface and from what the ball is doing rather than from any external number. That uncertainty argues mildly for caution early, because a side that loses its openers cheaply while setting has no way to recalibrate other than by rebuilding.
Chasing removes the guesswork. The required rate is known from the first ball, and it converts the innings into a resource allocation problem with a defined answer. An opening pair chasing can therefore take a more precise view of risk: if the rate is comfortable, there is no reason to attack the new ball at all, and if it is severe, there is no point pretending otherwise for ten overs and leaving an impossible task behind. The commonest failure in a chase is an opening partnership that bats as though it were setting, and hands over a rate that has quietly become unmanageable.
There is a psychological asymmetry too, and it is worth naming rather than mystifying. A side chasing knows the exact cost of every dot ball. A side setting does not, which makes complacency easier and makes a slow opening stand feel more acceptable at the time than it will look later.
When the opening partnership fails
Sides plan for the failure as carefully as for the success, because it happens often.
In a Test the immediate consequence is that the number three arrives with the ball still new. That position is the hardest specialist job in the side for exactly that reason, and good number threes are selected on their ability to open in all but name. Late in a day a captain has another option, which is to send in a lower order batter to survive the remaining overs and protect a specialist for the morning. In limited overs cricket there is no protection available. Two down in the third over means the powerplay is being batted by players who are not powerplay batters, and the side either accepts a slower start or takes risks with the wrong personnel. Most sides accept the slower start and try to recover through the middle overs, which is the correct call and also the reason a collapse at the top so often produces a total that looks twenty runs light.
Sides also plan the reverse case, which is what to do when the opening stand succeeds beyond expectation. A pair still together after twenty-five overs of a fifty over innings creates a pleasant problem: the batters who were selected to accelerate are now sitting with their pads on and fewer overs to work in. Well-run sides handle it by promoting a striker rather than sticking to the sheet, because a batting order is a plan for the likely case and not a contract.
The other failure mode is subtler: an opening partnership that survives but does nothing. Ten overs for fifteen runs with both openers in is not a platform in one day cricket; it is a debt, and the middle order pays the interest.
How to judge an opening partnership as you watch
Four questions will tell you more than the partnership figure on the scoreboard.
How many overs did it last, and against whom? A stand of fifty against the change bowlers on a flat surface is a different achievement from a stand of twenty-five against two fast bowlers with the ball darting about. The scoreboard treats them identically.
What did the ball look like at the handover? Watch the fielding side's reaction when a wicket falls. If a bowler immediately asks the umpire to look at the ball, the openers have done their work on it. If the captain restores a second slip for the incoming batter, they have not.
Were the field changes forced or voluntary? A captain who moves a catcher to the rope because he is protecting a boundary has been pushed. A captain who does it because he has decided to contain has not. Counting men in catching positions across the first fifteen overs is the simplest live measure of who is winning the phase.
And in the shorter formats, how many wickets are standing when the restriction ends? That single number, more than the runs beside it, determines what the rest of the innings is allowed to attempt.
Openers get judged on averages and remembered for failures, which is an unkind way to assess a job whose main product is a situation rather than a score. What is an opening partnership in cricket?
It is the stand between the two batters who come in at the start of an innings, and it lasts until the first wicket falls. Its length is measured in runs and, in the longer formats, just as importantly in balls faced. Because the pair faces the hardest, newest ball against the freshest bowlers, the partnership sets the terms on which everybody who follows will bat.
Why do teams pick a left and right handed opening pair?
A pair of opposite handedness forces the fielding side to move men and change lines every time the strike rotates, because a bowler's stock line to one is a different line to the other. It also disrupts the footmarks a bowler is trying to establish and makes it harder to settle into a rhythm. The advantage is real but modest, and no captain picks a worse batter for it.
What does a good T20 opening partnership look like?
Something that uses the six over powerplay, when only two fielders may stand outside the circle, without losing both openers inside it. The best pairs treat wickets in hand as the resource that funds acceleration later, so a fast start that costs both openers is often worth less than a slightly slower one that keeps them in. Judging the stand by runs alone misses most of what it did.

Should an opener bat through the innings?
In one day cricket an opener who bats deep into the innings is enormously valuable, because a set batter with the field spread scores faster than a new one. In Test cricket the equivalent virtue is surviving the new ball and handing the middle order a softer one. The idea that an opener should simply occupy the crease regardless of rate has been largely abandoned in every format.
What happens to an innings when the openers fail?
The middle order arrives against a ball that is still hard and moving, which is exactly what the opening pair was picked to prevent, and the side spends the rest of the innings batting one phase behind. In the longer game a captain may protect a specialist by sending in a nightwatchman late in the day.
