Overload football tactics: manufacturing a spare man
How an overload actually changes a defender's job, why sides load one flank to attack the other, the third-man run, and how to spot one being built.

Five shirts inside a twenty-metre box by the left touchline, three defenders trying to cover them, and the ball going backwards and sideways with nothing obvious happening. Then it happens. One pass inside, one first-time pass back out, and the ball is in the air travelling forty-five metres across the pitch to a winger who has touched it twice in the last ten minutes and is now alone with a full-back and half a pitch of grass.
Overload football tactics are usually taught as arithmetic, and the arithmetic is the easy half. Four against two is better than two against two. Everyone can count. What the counting misses is the part that actually produces goals: an overload is not a way of having more options, it is a way of changing the question a defender has to answer, and the answer he is forced into is often given somewhere he is not looking.
That is the sentence the popular explanations skip. An overload is not local. It is a lever, and the load usually comes off somewhere else.
A spare man is not an extra option, it is a different question for the defender
Take a flank where three attackers face three defenders. Defending that is an assignment problem. Each defender has a name, everybody knows whose job is whose, and if a goal comes from it, one player was beaten and the replay will show which one. Uncomfortable, but simple.
Now add a fourth attacker and leave the defenders at three. Nothing about the space has changed. What has changed is the nature of the work. No defender can be assigned a single opponent any more, because there are not enough defenders to go round, so at least one of them is now responsible for two players at once. His body position is a compromise between two men. His starting distance is a compromise. His decision is a bet on which pass is coming, made in under a second, and he will be wrong roughly as often as he is right.
The important consequence is that the spare man does not have to receive the ball for the overload to have worked. He has already done his job by existing. The defender who was forced to split the difference between two opponents is late to whichever one gets the pass, and being late by half a metre is the difference between a blocked cross and a clean one, between a tackle and a foul, between a shot and a pass sideways.
That is why counting a winger's touches is a bad way of judging whether he is contributing to an overload, and why coaches get so exercised about players who drift towards the ball because they want to be involved. Involvement is not the currency. Occupying a defender is the currency, and the two look nothing alike from the stand.
An overload also has a hard technical requirement that gets skipped in almost every diagram. A spare man is only spare if he is reachable. If he is standing behind a defender in the same line as a teammate, one defender covers both of them for nothing, because the defender's body sits across both passing lanes at once. Coaches call the area a defender takes away with his own position his cover shadow, and it is the mechanism that turns a five against three into a two against three without anybody moving.
So the unit of an overload is not the player. It is the passing line. Five players on top of each other on a touchline are four spectators and a man in trouble. Five players spread across three passing lines, at different heights and on different sides of the defenders, are a genuine overload, and the difference between the two pictures is a matter of a few metres of spacing that no scoreline ever records.
There is a second requirement, which is that the overload must sit somewhere the defence cannot ignore. A four against two thirty metres inside your own half against a team defending its box is not a lever, it is a rehearsal. The defenders are not obliged to react, so nothing moves, so nothing opens. An overload is a threat that has to be answered, and a threat nobody has to answer is just possession.

Pitch and penalty area dimensions are fixed by Law 1 of the Laws of the Game rather than taken from any match, which is why they can be used as a reference for how far the far side actually is.
Those four numbers explain more about overloads than most tactical diagrams do. The whole width of the pitch at the top level is between sixty-four and seventy-five metres, and the penalty area occupies a little over forty of them. A defensive unit that shifts fully to one side is not travelling an enormous distance to get back. It is travelling fifteen or twenty metres. The switch has to beat that, which is why the quality of one long pass decides whether an overload that took twenty seconds to build produces anything at all.
Overload football tactics start with three kinds of superiority, and only one is about counting
Coaching syllabuses across Europe teach superiority in categories rather than as a single idea, and the categories are worth having because they are convertible into one another. That convertibility is the engine of everything below.
Numerical superiority is the one everybody knows. More bodies than theirs in the zone where the ball is. Three against two in the first line of build-up, four against three in a wide area, five against four in the box at a cut-back.
Positional superiority is the same number of players arranged so that one of them is in a place the defenders cannot cover without breaking something. A midfielder standing between the opposition's midfield and defensive lines, on the blind side of the nearest marker, is not an extra man in any counting sense. He is a problem of the same shape: somebody has to go to him, and whoever goes leaves a hole in the line he came from. Three attackers positioned across three lines beat three attackers standing in one line, every time, with no change in the arithmetic.
Qualitative superiority is a mismatch. The numbers are level and the duel is not. A winger with acceleration against a full-back without it. A tall forward attacking the back post against the smallest defender in the box. A press-resistant midfielder receiving with a centre-forward as his nearest opponent, which is a duel the centre-forward almost never wins because he was not signed to win it.
There is a fourth that gets less attention and deserves more, which is superiority created by movement rather than position. An attacker arriving into a zone at speed against a defender who is standing still holds an advantage for the second or so it takes the defender to turn and match him. It expires quickly and cannot be held, which is why it is the hardest kind to coach and the most devastating when it is timed correctly. Everything about a run made from deep depends on it.
The reason to separate these is that good teams spend one to buy another. That is the exchange nobody puts on a whiteboard, and it is the whole point.
A dropping pivot converts positional superiority into numerical superiority: one player changes height, and a two against two against the first line of a press becomes a three against two. A false nine converts numerical into positional: he vacates the space in front of the centre-backs and receives in midfield, so a defender either follows him out of the line, which opens the space behind, or lets him turn, which is worse. And the exchange that matters most in the modern game runs the other way. A side deliberately builds a numerical overload in a place where it does not intend to score, in order to buy a qualitative one somewhere it does. Four against two on the left is not the goal. It is the price paid for one against one on the right.
Why a team builds an overload on the left to score on the right
Almost every defending team in professional football defends the ball rather than the pitch. The whole unit slides towards wherever the ball is, keeping the distances between players short, on the sound reasoning that the ball can only be in one place at a time and a compact block is much harder to play through than a spread-out one. A defence that tried to cover the entire width equally would be so stretched that a five-metre pass would break it.
That is correct defending. It is also, structurally, an agreement to leave the far side of the pitch open.
Defending sides know this and accept the trade knowingly. The far-side full-back tucks inside towards the centre-back rather than staying with his winger, because the winger is forty metres from the ball and cannot be reached in one pass without a very good one. The far-side midfielder pinches in to protect the middle. The block ends up shaped like a comma, dense around the ball and thin at the tail, and the players at the tail are unmarked on purpose.
The attacking side's job, then, is to make that trade a bad one. There are only two ways to do it, and both have to happen at once.
The first is to make the overload genuinely dangerous, so the shift is complete rather than half-hearted. If the loaded side merely holds the ball, defenders will slide lazily, keep one eye across the pitch, and the far-side full-back will never fully commit. If the loaded side threatens to get in behind or to cut the ball back, the shift becomes urgent, defenders turn their shoulders towards the ball, and the tail of the comma stretches. Bait that does not look edible does not get eaten.
The second is that the switch has to travel faster than the defence can slide. This is the part where most attempts at overload to isolate fail, and it fails in a very specific way: the ball goes back through the centre-backs, three or four safe passes across the pitch, and by the time it reaches the far winger the whole block has walked back across with it and he is marked again. Passing the ball across the pitch is not a switch. A switch is a pass that skips the shift, which means one long, flat, first-time diagonal that arrives while defenders are still travelling.
The distinction is easy to see and almost never named. Ask of any sideways ball: did the defence have to re-form, or did it merely walk? If the ball crosses the pitch at roughly the speed the defenders can jog, no isolation has been created and the possession has done nothing but tire everybody out.
A constructed model on stated assumptions rather than measured data. It assumes a defending block that slides roughly two metres per second towards the ball once the overload becomes threatening, and a far-side winger who holds his position on the touchline. The point is the shape, not the values.

The other half of the isolation, the half that lives on a training ground and never in a highlights package, is the discipline of the winger who is not involved. He has to stand still, wide, high, and often on the touchline itself, for a minute or more, while play happens somewhere he cannot influence. Every instinct tells him to come inside and find the ball. If he does, he brings his marker with him into the congested side and the isolation he was being saved for disappears. Holding width is one of the least rewarded jobs in football, it directly determines whether the plan works, and it is the reason so many overload-to-isolate sides are built asymmetrically on purpose, with an inverted full-back on the loaded flank and a permanently wide winger on the other.

The defence has four answers, and every one of them opens something
An overload is not unanswerable. It is a problem with four known solutions, each of which costs something specific, and knowing the four is what lets you read what a defending team has decided.
Slide and stay compact. The default. Keep the distances short, force the ball towards the touchline, accept that the far side is open and back your recovery speed to deal with the switch. The cost is the switch itself, and the way to reduce that cost is to make the loaded side as uncomfortable as possible so the ball never gets picked up cleanly enough to be switched. Sides that defend this way spend a great deal of time working on one thing: pressing the player who would hit the diagonal, rather than the player with the ball.
Send an extra body. Match the numbers by breaking a line: the far-side central midfielder sprints across, or a centre-back steps out into the wide area, or the striker drops forty metres to make it four against four. This kills the overload where it stands. It also, by definition, leaves an unoccupied space in the line the body came from, and a good attacking side is already looking at that space rather than at the ball. Playing into the gap left by the man who jumped is the standard punishment, and it is why a defence that solves overloads by jumping tends to concede in central areas rather than wide ones.
Drop deeper. The most underrated answer. Retreat until the overload is happening in a zone where nothing can be lost. A four against two forty metres from goal is only a problem if there is space behind the defence to attack; take the space away by defending closer to your own goal, and the overload becomes a group of players passing the ball to each other in front of a wall. Sides who defend in a deep, compact block are not failing to stop overloads, they are declining to treat them as urgent, which is a different thing and often the correct one.
Man-mark. Assign a defender to every attacker in the zone and cancel the spare man arithmetically. This is the most direct answer and the most expensive. It surrenders shape, because the marking follows the movement rather than the geometry, and once shape is gone the attacking side can create space simply by running somewhere useless and taking a defender with him. It also converts every situation into a set of individual duels, which is a gift to a side with any qualitative advantage at all.
Two more tools sit underneath all four. The touchline is a free defender, which is why defensive units work so hard to force overloads wide rather than allowing them centrally: a player with his back to the line has half the options of the same player in the middle. And the offside line lets a defence compress the pitch vertically without adding anyone, which shrinks the area in which an overload can exist at all. The uncomfortable truth for attacking coaches is that the correct answer is usually the third one. Most overloads in most matches are defused by a defence that simply refuses to be dragged out of position, and the overload has to be built in the final third, where dropping deeper is no longer available, before it does real damage. Overloads in your own half are for progressing the ball. Overloads in the last thirty metres are for scoring. They are not the same tool and they are not defended the same way.
The third man is the pass an overload is actually for
Here is where an overload stops being a passing exercise and becomes a way through rather than around.
The pattern is three players. The first has the ball. The second is a receiver, usually marked, usually with his back to goal, often in a position that looks like a bad idea. The third is arriving from somewhere the defenders are not looking. The ball goes into the second player and comes straight back out to the third, who is now behind the line the second player pulled towards himself.
The counterintuitive part is that the pass into the second player is deliberately played into pressure. The receiver is not the target. He is the trigger. At the instant a marked player takes possession, everything about the defenders around him changes: their eyes go to the ball, their hips square up towards him, their weight shifts forward, and the covering defender behind takes a step to help. That collective adjustment lasts about a second, and it is the only moment when a defensive line is looking at one point rather than at the spaces between them. The third man moves into a gap that was not there before the pass and will not be there a second later.
An overload is what makes the adjustment big enough to matter. In a level situation the defenders are already marking, so the adjustment is small. In an overloaded situation each defender is covering two players, so when the ball arrives at one of them the defender has to commit, and committing to one man means abandoning the other. The four against two is what turns a routine lay-off into a line-breaking pass.
Three details separate a coached third-man pattern from a hopeful one.
The runner starts before the ball does. If the third man waits to see his teammate receive, he is beginning his run at the moment the defence is already reacting, and he will arrive into a space that has closed. The run begins as the first pass leaves, which requires the runner to have decided what is going to happen before it happens.
The lay-off is one touch. Two touches gives the defence time to unwind its adjustment, and the whole value of the pattern is contained inside about a second. This is why the second player's technical profile matters so much and why sides which build overloads spend an unreasonable amount of training time on receiving with the back to goal under contact.
The run goes to the blind side. Behind the defender's shoulder, on the side away from the ball, which is the one place a defender cannot check without turning his head away from the pass he is trying to intercept. A third-man run into the defender's field of vision is simply a run.
The most common failure of overload football tactics has nothing to do with the numbers and everything to do with this. A side gets four players around the ball, keeps possession comfortably, passes it in triangles for thirty seconds and creates absolutely nothing, because nobody is running past anybody. A static overload is a passing drill. The extra man is there to make the defenders commit, and if nothing is happening behind them when they commit, no advantage has been converted into anything.
- Choose the side to loadThe decision is usually made before the possession starts and is often fixed for the whole match, because it determines which full-back inverts, which winger holds width and which midfielder covers the far side. Loading whichever side the ball happens to reach is not a plan.
- Bring the bodies, but on different linesFive players arrive around the ball at different heights and on different sides of the defenders. Standing in a cluster gives one defender two men for free through his cover shadow. The count only becomes an overload once each player sits on his own passing line.
- Pin the centre-backsA centre-forward stays central and high, holding the two centre-backs in place. Without him they drift towards the ball, the overload is answered for nothing, and there is no far side to attack.
- Make the overload look like a threatCombine towards the byline, threaten the cut-back, force a defensive action. A defence only shifts fully across if refusing to shift costs it a chance. Circulating the ball harmlessly produces a lazy slide and no isolation.
- Read the far-side full-backHe is the whole argument. Every metre he tucks inside towards his centre-back is a metre of space being made for a pass nobody has played yet. When he loses sight of his winger, the isolation exists.
- Hold the width on the far sideThe isolated winger stands still, wide and high, and does not come to the ball. This is the least rewarded instruction on the pitch and the one the plan actually depends on.
- Switch faster than the shiftOne long, flat, first-time diagonal, not three safe passes through the centre-backs. A ball that crosses the pitch at jogging pace lets the block walk back with it and arrives at a marked player.
- Attack while he is still turningThe winger takes the pass on the front foot and drives at the full-back before support arrives. Controlling it, looking up and waiting for a teammate hands back the second the whole possession was spent buying.
- Second wave, or reloadIf the one against one is beaten, the ball goes into the box against a defence that is still travelling. If it is not, the ball is recycled and the overload is rebuilt on the other side, because the block has now shifted the other way.
The sequence a coached overload runs through, from the decision to load one side to the moment the ball arrives on the other. Timings are the conventional coaching frame rather than measured intervals.
Where overloads are built, and what each one is for
Overloads appear in five places on a pitch, and they do five different jobs. Treating them as one idea is why the concept gets muddled.
Against the first line of a press. The oldest and most reliable one. Two centre-backs facing two forwards is a coin flip, so a third body arrives: the goalkeeper joins the passing structure, or a midfielder drops between or beside the centre-backs, and it becomes three against two. The presser has to choose which of the two he covers and the free man carries the ball forward, which is a much bigger event than it sounds, because a defender running with the ball forces somebody in the next line to come and meet him and the whole structure starts to come apart. This is the everyday grammar of building play out from the goalkeeper, and the goal kick law is part of why it looks the way it does now: the ball is in play as soon as it is kicked and clearly moves, with opponents required to stay outside the penalty area until then, so a side can legally receive a goal kick inside its own box and manufacture a three against two before the press can even arrive.
In the half-space between the lines. Three attackers around a receiver in the pocket, against two midfielders who cannot both cover him and the man beyond him. This is the overload that produces chances rather than progression, because everything that comes out of it is aimed at the space behind the last line.
The wide box. Full-back, winger, nearest central midfielder and often the centre-forward drifting across, against a full-back and a wide midfielder. Four against two, on a touchline, is the classic image and the one most people mean by the phrase. Its outputs are the overlap, the underlap, the cut-back and, more often than the diagram suggests, the switch that abandons the whole thing.
The penalty area at the cut-back. The most valuable overload of all and the least discussed, because it lasts under two seconds. A ball rolled back from the byline arrives in front of defenders who are facing their own goal, moving the wrong way, and unable to watch the ball and their man at the same time. Attackers arriving from twenty metres out are unmarkable in that instant, not because there are more of them but because the defenders' body orientation has been ruined by the position of the ball. Sides drill the occupation of the near post, the penalty spot and the back post specifically so that the arithmetic in the six-yard area is never level.
Set pieces. The only situation in football where a side can arrange an overload in advance with the ball stationary and the clock stopped. That is why so much coaching time goes into it and why the routines look choreographed: they are.
Overload football tactics work against the ball as well as with it
An overload does not stop existing at the moment possession changes hands. It changes owner.
A side with five players inside a twenty-metre square has, in the instant it loses the ball, five players inside a twenty-metre square around an opponent who has just won it under pressure and cannot yet see anything. That is not an accident of the attacking shape. For most possession-based sides it is one of the reasons the attacking shape is what it is. The overload is built partly so that the counter-press has bodies to work with, which is covered in detail in the piece on winning the ball back in the seconds after losing it.
The same logic runs in reverse, and it is the honest cost of the whole approach. Loading one flank means the opposite flank is empty for their counter-attack as well as for your switch. A team that wins the ball in a crowded left-hand corner and immediately plays it into the space on their right is attacking a side with three players in the wrong postcode. This is why every side that builds overloads also carries a rest defence, three or four players who do not join in, staggered rather than flat, with one of them specifically covering the far side.
The instruction that follows is one of the least glamorous in coaching and one of the most important: an overload has a maximum size, and it is not eleven. Sides set rules about which combinations of players may join, so that the number in the crowded area never rises past the point where the counter becomes unmanageable. The five in the corner are not the five who happen to be closest. They are five specific roles, and the sixth player who fancies it is the reason the team concedes on the break.
What an overload costs
Six costs, all of them real, and any side that builds overloads is paying at least three of them at any given time.
Congestion. Beyond a certain density, extra players stop adding passing lines and start removing them, because they stand in each other's lanes and let one defender cover two with his shadow. Five in a small area is often worse than four. This is the most common technical fault in youth and amateur football and it looks exactly like enthusiasm.
Time. Building an overload takes time, and time is only cheap against a side that has already decided to sit deep. Against a team that presses aggressively or counters quickly, twenty seconds of arranging bodies on one side of the pitch is twenty seconds of exposure. The teams that overload most heavily tend also to be the teams that dominate possession, and that is not a coincidence, it is a prerequisite.
Transition risk. Covered above, and worth restating because it is the one that decides matches. The shape that creates the overload is the shape you will be in when you lose the ball.
Predictability. An overload that always resolves the same way is scouted within a season. If the ball always goes left, then back, then across to the isolated winger, the far-side full-back stops tucking in and the entire lever stops working. Good sides therefore build the same overload and resolve it three or four different ways, which is a training-ground cost measured in months.
Doing the defence's job for it. A compact block wants everybody in a small area, because that is where it is strongest. An attacking side that gathers five players in front of a well-organised defensive unit without ever threatening the box has voluntarily walked into the part of the pitch the defence has already won. The overload has to point at goal or it is a favour.
The player who pays. Somebody has to hold the width and be uninvolved, and that somebody is judged on touches, dribbles and goal contributions like everyone else. A winger executing the plan perfectly can look, in the numbers and to the crowd, like a passenger for an hour before the one moment the whole hour was for. This is a genuine tension in modern squads and not a small one.
How to spot an overload being built before the ball arrives
All of it is legible from the stand or from a wide camera angle, and none of it requires you to watch the ball. Four things to look at, in this order.
Count the shirts inside the width of the penalty area, on the ball side. Not the whole pitch, just the strip of grass between the touchline and the edge of the box extended up the pitch. Four or five attacking players in that strip against two or three defenders is an overload being assembled, and it is usually visible ten or fifteen seconds before anything happens.
Find the player who is not moving. Somewhere on the far touchline there will be an attacker standing almost still, very wide, very high, doing nothing. He is the point of the whole exercise. If he is drifting infield towards the action, either the plan is not on or he is not following it, and either way no isolation is coming.
Watch the far-side full-back, not the ball. He is the man in the argument. Every metre he tucks in towards his centre-back is a metre of space being created for a pass that has not been played yet, and the moment he loses sight of his winger to watch the ball is the moment the switch becomes available. If he is holding his position out wide and refusing to be dragged, the defending side has decided to concede the crowded flank instead, and the game will be played there.
Watch what happens after the switch, in the first second. This is the tell that separates a coached plan from a lucky ball. If the isolated winger takes the pass and immediately attacks the full-back, driving at him while he is still turning, the whole thing was designed. If he controls it, looks up, waits for support and lets two defenders arrive, the switch was an escape from congestion rather than the purpose of it, and the overload achieved nothing except a change of scenery.
Do that for ten possessions and you will know which side is using overloads deliberately and which is simply crowding the ball, and the difference between the two is nearly all of what people mean when they say a team is well coached. One last thing to carry into the next match you watch. The area of the pitch where the overload is built is almost never the area where the damage is done. Watch the crowded side to understand what a team is trying to make happen, then move your eyes to the empty side to see whether it worked. The goal, when it comes, will arrive from the part of the pitch nobody was looking at, which was the plan from the moment somebody decided to put five players in a corner.

What is a third-man run?
A third-man run is a pass to a marked player who lays it off immediately to a third player arriving from behind or beyond the defenders. The pass into pressure is deliberate, because the defenders adjust their body position towards the receiver at the instant he takes the ball, and the third man moves into the gap that adjustment opens. It is the movement that turns a passing overload into a pass through the defence rather than around it.
