Pink ball Test explained: what changes under lights
How a pink ball Test works: why the colour was changed, what the extra finish does to the ball, and why the twilight hour hurts batters so much.

At Adelaide Oval in late November 2015 a ball left a bowler's hand in a Test match and nobody in the ground had ever seen one that colour in the middle before. That is the moment a pink ball Test explained itself into existence: Australia against New Zealand, the first five-day international played into the evening, and a manufacturer's compromise between three impossible requirements sitting in the bowler's palm.
The short version is this. Day-night Test cricket exists because a Test match played in office hours is watched by very few people in the ground and rather fewer at home. Moving the last two sessions into the evening solves that, but it breaks the ball: red is invisible under floodlights and white cannot survive eighty overs of first-class use. Pink is the colour that clears both bars at once. Everything else that feels strange about these matches, the dinner interval, the twilight collapse, the swing that arrives late and stays, follows from the ball rather than from any change to the Laws.
The scheduling problem that came before the colour problem
Nothing about day-night Tests started with the ball. It started with empty seats on a Tuesday.
A Test match occupies five working days. Two of them are usually a weekend, and the crowd on those days is often healthy. The other three are Monday to Wednesday or Thursday to Friday, and the people who would come are at work or at school. Broadcasters have the mirror version of the same problem: a match that finishes at six in the evening local time reaches its home audience just as they are commuting, and reaches nobody at all in the markets where it is the middle of the night.
Shifting the day forward by about four hours fixes both at once. Play begins in the early to mid afternoon, the final session runs into the night, and anyone with a normal job can arrive for the last two hours. Every other sport that faced this question answered it the same way decades ago, and one-day cricket answered it in the late 1970s.
Test cricket could not follow, because the object it uses is not the object limited-overs cricket uses. A fifty-over innings gets through a ball in a couple of hours; a Test innings can spend eight hours on one. That constraint is what makes the pink ball a genuinely difficult piece of engineering rather than a marketing choice.

What a pink ball has to do that a red one does not
Set aside the colour for a second and list the jobs. A Test ball has to be visible to a batter facing at speed in bright sun, visible to the same batter three hours later under artificial light, visible to a fielder running back with the ball against the sky, visible to a slip fielder at close range, and visible on a broadcast camera at every one of those moments. It then has to keep doing all of that for eighty overs while being hit into advertising boards and dragged across an abrasive outfield.
Red fails the artificial-light test. Under floodlights a red ball reads as a dark object against a dark background, and the further it travels the less of it there is to see. Deep fielders are the first to complain and they are the ones whose complaints matter most, because a catch dropped for want of sight is not a skill failure.
White fails the durability test. The white ball used in limited-overs cricket is finished to be seen against dark sightscreens, and it discolours fast. Grass stains, dirt and abrasion take it from white to grey-green within twenty or thirty overs, at which point it is worse than useless. Limited-overs cricket lives with that by changing balls; Test cricket cannot, because the entire tactical structure of the format assumes one ball wearing down over a long innings.
Pink is the answer that fails neither test badly. It is light enough to register under floodlights and against a dark night sky, dark enough to stand out against the white sightscreens used in daylight, and it can be finished heavily enough to hold its colour without becoming a different object. The choice was not aesthetic. It was the only remaining region of the colour space.
The extra finish, and why it changes the cricket
Here is the part that has real consequences on the field. A pink ball is not a red ball dipped in a different dye.
To keep the colour readable for eighty overs, manufacturers add pigment and additional layers of lacquer at the finishing stage. That coating is thicker than the equivalent on a red ball, and it is the single most important physical difference between the two. It also explains the seam: the pink Kookaburra is stitched with black thread, because a pale seam disappears into a pale ball and a batter needs to read the seam's angle to work out what is coming.
Thicker lacquer does three things.
It keeps the ball shiny for longer. Conventional swing depends on one polished side and one rougher side working against the airflow, and a ball that stays glossy keeps producing it further into an innings than a red ball would. Bowlers describe pink balls as swinging in bursts that arrive later than expected and then refuse to stop.
It delays wear. The lacquer takes the abrasion first, so the leather underneath is protected for longer. That pushes back the point at which the two halves of the ball genuinely diverge in roughness.
It suppresses reverse swing. This is the deepest change, and it follows directly from the second point. Reverse swing is a product of accumulated damage, not of anything the fielding side does with a cloth, and a ball engineered to resist damage is a ball engineered to resist reverse. In a red-ball Test the state of an old ball is the central tactical question of the middle session. In a pink-ball Test it often simply is not, because the old ball has not gone anywhere near the state required.

The twilight hour, and why batters treat it as a separate discipline
Every day-night Test contains a passage of roughly forty minutes in which the light is neither one thing nor the other. The sun has dropped low or gone, the floodlights are on but not yet dominant, and the ground is lit by two sources of different colour temperature at once.
Batters find this the hardest cricket in the match, and the reason is about contrast rather than brightness. Picking a ball up early depends on it separating from its background in the first fraction of its flight, near the bowler's hand, where the eye has least information. During twilight that background is a wall of stands and sky whose brightness is falling from one ball to the next, so the visual reference the batter calibrated against ten minutes earlier is already wrong.
Add the shadows. Late afternoon shadows fall across the square at an angle, which means the ball can pass through a bright patch and a dark patch inside a single delivery. Add the ball itself, which is at its most reflective when new and can flare under a low sun.
The tactical consequence is that captains stop thinking about the day as three sessions and start thinking about it as a schedule with one dangerous window in it. A side batting first that survives to the interval before twilight has done something worth counting. A side that loses the toss and finds itself batting through it has lost more than an hour of ordinary cricket. How the playing day is divided, and why the intervals are renamed
The structure of the day is the standard Test structure moved forward. Three sessions of about two hours, two breaks between them, a minimum over requirement across the day, and the usual provisions for making up time lost.
What changes is the naming and the length allocation. A daytime Test breaks for a forty-minute lunch after the first session and a twenty-minute tea after the second. A match starting in mid-afternoon cannot sensibly call its first break lunch, so the two intervals are generally tea and dinner, with the longer forty-minute break normally falling between the second and third sessions rather than the first and second. The minimum over requirement is where this gets interesting late in a match. Because the last session finishes under lights rather than in fading natural light, there is less scope for the day to be cut short for bad light, and the overs that a daytime Test loses in its final hour tend to be bowled. Over a five-day match that difference accumulates, and it is one reason day-night Tests have a reputation for producing results rather than draws.

Dew, the variable nobody on the field controls
The one thing floodlights cannot fix is moisture. In many parts of the cricketing world, temperature falls sharply after sunset and dew settles on the outfield during the final session.
For a fielding side that is a serious problem. A wet ball is heavier, harder to grip, harder to shine, and it stops gripping the seam in a bowler's fingers the way a dry one does. Spinners suffer most, because their entire method depends on imparting revolutions through friction between finger and leather, and a slick ball simply slides. Seamers lose the ability to maintain a polished side, which shortens the swing window they were promised by the lacquer.
For a batting side the same conditions are close to a gift. The ball comes on more predictably, it skids rather than gripping off the surface, and the fielding side's most dangerous options are blunted for an hour or more.
Dew is not uniform across venues. It depends on humidity, on how quickly the ground cools, on ground staff practice and on the time of year, so a day-night Test in a dry inland climate and one in a coastal tropical one are barely the same fixture. Three manufacturers, three different pink balls
The phrase "the pink ball" hides real variation, because Test cricket does not use one ball worldwide. The home board chooses the manufacturer, and each of the three principal makers builds a ball with a distinct character in both red and pink.
The broad differences follow from how the balls are put together. Hand-stitched seams stand proud for longer than machine-stitched ones, which changes how much sideways movement is available off the surface deep into an innings. Different leather treatments hold shine differently. A pink ball inherits all of those differences and then adds its own layer of pigment and lacquer on top, so the gap between two manufacturers' pink balls can be wider than the gap between their red equivalents.
The practical effect for a viewer is that generalisations travel badly. A pink ball that swings for fifty overs in one country and a pink ball that stops doing anything after thirty in another are not evidence of a contradiction; they are two different pieces of equipment being described by the same two words. Anyone comparing performances across day-night Tests in different countries is comparing across a variable that is rarely stated. Where these matches are played, and why the list is short
Australia reintroduced the concept at Adelaide and has staged more day-night Tests than anyone else, and the reasons are practical rather than ideological. Adelaide has the right combination of climate, floodlight quality and a public that will fill an evening. Other Test countries have staged them in ones and twos: England, New Zealand, South Africa, the West Indies, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh have all held at least one.
The total number played remains small, in the mid-twenties for men's cricket more than a decade after the first, and the slow rate is not an accident. Three constraints keep it down.
Climate. In high-latitude summers there is barely any night to play in. An English evening in midsummer stays light until late, so a day-night Test there gets a short floodlit period and all of the scheduling disruption for very little of the benefit.
Player resistance. Batters in particular have been reluctant, because the twilight period asks them to face the best bowlers in the hardest conditions of the day, and because the format's short match record suggests it favours the ball. Boards need players' cooperation to schedule these matches, and that cooperation has not always been given.
Competitive stakes. With the World Test Championship attaching points to every Test, sides have become less willing to accept a fixture with unfamiliar conditions and a wider range of outcomes. A novelty is easier to agree to in a dead rubber than in a match that decides a final place.
What captains do differently, from the toss onwards
Knowing the mechanism lets you predict the decisions, and there are four that recur.
Bowl first more readily. In daytime Tests the default instinct on a good surface is to bat. Under lights, a captain who wins the toss and can get the opposition batting into the twilight window has a genuine reason to bowl, and that reason is strong enough to override a flat pitch.
Manage the fast bowlers around the window, not around the sessions. The most valuable overs of the day are not evenly distributed. A captain who has spent his strike bowler's spell in the daylight session and has nothing left when the light turns has wasted his best asset, so spells are broken up and held back in a way that looks odd against a daytime match.
Declare with the clock rather than the score. A side setting up a declaration in a day-night Test is trying to expose the opposition to a specific hour of the evening. That can mean batting on past the point a daytime captain would have closed, or closing early, depending on where the twilight sits relative to the interval.
Treat the second new ball as an evening weapon. Because the pink ball resists wear, the argument for keeping an old one is weak, and because the new ball swings hardest in humid evening air, taking it under lights is close to a default. That is one of the few genuinely different tactical patterns the format has produced.

The daytime pink ball trial, and what it would change
There is a further development that separates the ball from the schedule entirely. The ICC has approved a trial allowing pink balls to be used in ordinary daytime Tests, by prior agreement between the two sides, in matches likely to be affected by poor light.
The logic is straightforward. Bad light stops far more Test cricket than rain does in some countries, and it stops it because a red ball becomes genuinely hard to see, not because the conditions are dangerous in any other respect. A ball that remains visible as the light drops removes most of the reason to come off. Under the reported terms of the trial, the switch has to be agreed before the match rather than improvised during it, which keeps both sides on the same information and prevents a captain from calling for a ball change because it suits him at that moment.
If that becomes normal practice, the pink ball stops being a marker of day-night cricket and becomes a tool for saving overs in any conditions. It would also change how a viewer should read the colour: pink would no longer tell you the match finishes at nine in the evening, only that the two boards expected the light to be poor.
The long trial period that produced the ball
The pink ball did not appear fully formed in 2015. It came out of years of iteration in domestic and second-tier cricket, most visibly in Australia's first-class competition, where rounds were played with prototype balls specifically so that manufacturers could collect feedback from professionals rather than from laboratory rigs.
Those trials were not about whether the ball could be seen in a photograph. They were about a list of failure modes that only appear when a ball is used in anger: whether the colour survived contact with a dry outfield, whether the dye came off on bats and clothing, whether the seam stayed readable to a batter picking the ball up at seventy miles an hour, whether the ball retained enough definition for a slip fielder to react to an edge at close range, and whether broadcast cameras could track it in three different lighting regimes on the same evening.
Each version failed at something. Early prototypes bleached to a pale, washed-out shade well before eighty overs. Others kept their colour and went so hard on the surface that they behaved unlike any ball the players recognised. The seam thread went through its own iteration, because a green or white seam on a pink ball loses the contrast a batter needs to read the wrist and the ball's rotation. Black eventually won for the reason black usually wins: it is the one colour that stays legible against a light background in any light.
That history matters for how you should read criticism of the ball. Complaints about pink-ball behaviour are usually treated as complaints about the concept, and they are not. They are complaints about the current version of a product that has been revised repeatedly and will be revised again, in the same way that the red ball's specification has moved over a century without anybody proposing that Test cricket be abandoned. Fielding, catching and the things the broadcast does not show
One category of effect gets very little attention because it is almost invisible on television: the fielding side's job changes more than the batting side's.
Slip catching under lights is a different task. The reaction time available for an edge is fixed by physics, and the cue a slip fielder uses is the first flicker of a change in the ball's line. Under artificial light that flicker arrives against a background of shadow and glare rather than uniform daylight, and the ball's own gloss reflects the lights back in a way a matt red ball does not. Cordons tend to stand marginally deeper in the evening for exactly this reason.
Outfield catching is harder still. A high ball hit into the night sky leaves the pool of light the stadium creates, becomes briefly harder to track, and re-enters it on the way down. Fielders describe losing the ball at the top of its arc, which is not something that happens in daylight.
Ground fielding gets an underrated advantage in the other direction. A pink ball is easier to pick out against green grass in the evening than a red one, so a fielder chasing to the boundary and looking down at the turf actually has a better reference than they would in a floodlit red-ball match, if such a thing existed.
None of this shows up in a scorecard, and very little of it is legible on a broadcast, because a television camera has its own exposure settings and shows the viewer a much cleaner image than the fielder has. When a catch goes down in the evening session of a day-night Test, the replay almost always makes it look more straightforward than it was. That gap between what the camera sees and what a fielder sees is the single most common source of unfair criticism in the format, and it is worth holding in mind before judging anyone. What people get wrong about pink ball Tests
Four claims circulate constantly and each needs qualifying.
"The pink ball is a bowler's ball." It favours seam bowling in specific conditions, mainly the evening air and the twilight window, and it takes away reverse swing, which is a bowler's weapon. Across a whole match the advantage is narrower than the reputation suggests, and it is concentrated in a couple of hours rather than spread evenly.
"Day-night Tests always finish early." Several have finished inside four days and the pattern is real, but the sample is small enough that a handful of matches move the impression a long way. Surfaces prepared for evening cricket and unfamiliar conditions both contribute, and neither is a property of the colour.
"The rules are different." They are not. The eighty-over threshold, the follow-on, the over rates and the ball replacement provisions are the standard ones covered in the laws every follower should know. The playing conditions change the timetable, not the game.
"It is the same as a floodlit one-day match." A limited-overs match under lights uses a white ball for a short innings and expects the fielding side to cope with dew as a routine cost. What to watch for during one
A few habits make these matches far more readable.
- Note when the floodlights are switched on. They usually come on well before they are needed, and the gap between that moment and the point where they dominate is the twilight window. Time it once and you will know when the difficult passage begins for the rest of the match.
- Watch the outfielders in the deep, not the batters. Fielders misjudging a high ball under lights is the earliest visible sign that visibility has genuinely deteriorated, and it usually shows up before the batting does.
- Track the shine rather than the over count. Broadcast close-ups will show whether the polished side is still glossy. A pink ball that still looks lacquered at forty overs is telling you the swing window is not finished.
- Watch the spinner's grip after the dinner break. Repeated wiping of hands and ball, and a bowler asking for a towel, is dew arriving. The fielding side's options narrow from that point.
- Check who bowls the first over after the lights take over. A captain who saves his best bowler for that moment rather than for the start of a session has understood where the value sits.
The most useful thing to keep in mind through all of it is that nothing here is a new sport. A day-night Test is the same contest with a rescheduled clock and a differently finished ball, and every unfamiliar thing that happens in one traces back to those two changes.
