Rugby scrum rules explained: the bind, the feed, the shove
Rugby scrum rules explained from the mark to the ball leaving: who binds where, why crouch-bind-set replaced the hit, and what a straight feed is worth now.

A scrum goes down. The referee resets it. It goes down again, the packs are pulled apart and rebuilt for a third time, and this time the arm goes up. Half the ground cheers and the other half howls, and almost nobody in either half could say which of the sixteen men in the pile did the thing that was penalised.
That should be strange, because the scrum is the slowest contest in the sport. It has a mark, a countdown, three spoken commands, a defined shape and a referee standing two metres away with time to look. Every other decision in rugby is made at a speed that explains itself. This one is not.
Get the rugby scrum rules explained properly and the reason becomes obvious. The scrum is not hard to referee because it is fast. It is hard to referee because the thing that fails is almost never the thing that caused the failure. Force enters a structure of sixteen bodies at one point and comes out at another, and what a camera shows you is the second point.
This is the opposite problem to the one at the breakdown, where everything is decided in a tenth of a second under a heap of bodies and the referee has no time at all. The contest for the ball after a tackle is an argument about timing. The scrum is an argument about technique, and technique leaves evidence.
Why the rugby scrum rules begin with a mark on the grass
Before anything else, understand what a scrum is for. It is not a punishment. Rugby has punishments and they are called penalties.
A scrum is the restart the game uses when play has stopped for something that was nobody's real fault. A knock-on. A forward pass. Accidental offside, where a player is struck by a team-mate's pass through no design of his own. In each case there is an infringement, but not one that deserves a penalty, and simply giving the ball to the other side would over-reward an accident.
So the law does something cleverer. It restarts play with a contest that the non-offending team is heavily favoured to win, and it does it in a way that removes sixteen forwards from the open field for half a minute.
That second effect matters more than the first. A scrum takes the eight biggest players on each side, pins them in one spot, and leaves fourteen backs standing in a large empty space with a defined offside line between them. There is no other moment in the game where the pitch is that open. Half of rugby's attacking design exists because scrums create it.
The other scrums come from the ball dying rather than from an error. If a ruck goes to ground and nobody can play the ball, the referee awards a scrum, and the feed goes to whichever team was moving forward immediately beforehand. If neither was, it goes to the attacking side. A maul that becomes unplayable is treated differently and hands the feed to the team that did not have the ball when the maul began, which is why the rolling maul is such a heavily loaded contest: stopping one is worth possession, not just a stoppage.
A team awarded a penalty or a free kick can also elect to scrum instead of kicking. That option is not a curiosity. For a pack that believes it is stronger, taking the scrum is an investment: forgo the kick now, in the expectation of a better penalty from a stronger position in ninety seconds.
The mark itself has constraints. The referee cannot set a scrum closer than five metres to a touchline, and cannot set one closer than five metres to the goal line. Both exist to keep the structure clear of the edges of the pitch, and the second of them is the reason a knock-on two metres from the line produces a five-metre scrum rather than a scrum on the line.

All four are set by the law, not by convention or by any season's data.
Eight men, three rows, and two props who do opposite jobs
A scrum in the fifteen-a-side game is eight players against eight, arranged in three rows. Sevens uses three a side and no second or back row at all, which is why a sevens scrum is a formality and a fifteens scrum is a fight.
The front row is three players: the loosehead prop wearing one, the hooker wearing two, the tighthead prop wearing three. These are the only players in direct contact with opponents, and every legal argument about the scrum is ultimately about what these six men are doing with their arms, hips and heads.
The second row is the two locks, four and five. They bind onto the props in front of them and onto each other, and their heads go into the gaps between hooker and prop. They are the engine. Almost all of the forward force in a scrum is generated behind the front row and transmitted through it.
The back row is three: two flankers, six and seven, binding onto the locks and packing outside the props, and the number eight binding between the two locks at the very back. The number eight is the only player in the pack who can see the ball arrive at his own feet, and he is the one who most often controls it.

Now the part that most people watching have never had explained, and which governs everything else.
The two props are not doing the same job in opposite directions. They are doing different jobs.
Look at where their heads go. When the packs engage, each front row's three heads slot into the gaps in the opposing front row. The tighthead prop puts his head into the gap between the opposing loosehead and the opposing hooker. He has an opponent's shoulder on each side of his own head. He is boxed in, which is exactly what "tight" means.
The loosehead prop is on the outside edge. His head goes into the gap between the opposing tighthead and the edge of the scrum, so he has an opponent on one side of his head and open air on the other. His outside shoulder is free.
That asymmetry produces almost every technical feature of scrummaging. The loosehead, with a free shoulder and an opponent's chest above him, can work upwards and try to lift his opposite number out of position. The tighthead, squeezed on both sides, has to hold two men's weight and keep his own shape while doing it. He cannot go up, he cannot go sideways, and if he drops his bind the whole side of the scrum falls in.
It is harder, and the players who can do it are rarer. That scarcity is a real and permanent feature of squad building, and it is why front-row cover eats so much of a matchday bench. A side has to be able to replace all three front-row positions or the scrums stop being contested, which is a large part of the reason the substitution rules are written the way they are.
Uncontested scrums are what happens when a team cannot field suitably trained front rowers, through injury or a red card. Nobody pushes, nobody contests, and the feeding team simply wins the ball. It is a safety mechanism with an obvious moral hazard attached, and referees and disciplinary panels watch for teams that discover a convenient front-row problem while defending a lead.
Crouch, bind, set, and why the calls stopped being a countdown
For most of rugby's history the packs came together at speed. Two groups of eight, each weighing well over eight hundred kilograms in the professional game, closed a gap of half a metre or more and collided. That collision was called the hit, and coaches spent enormous effort on winning it, because whoever arrived with more momentum owned the scrum before the ball was anywhere near it.
The hit was also the single most dangerous moment in rugby. A front-row forward at the point of engagement has his head fixed between two opponents, his arms occupied by a bind, and eight hundred kilograms behind him. If the structure fails at that instant, his neck takes an axial load with no capacity to move out of the way. Rugby's catastrophic injury record is small in absolute terms and it has always been concentrated in exactly this position.
The engagement sequence has therefore been rewritten repeatedly, and the direction of travel has been consistent: take the speed out of it.
An earlier version ran crouch, touch, pause, engage. Four calls, with a deliberate hold in the middle, which turned out to make things worse rather than better. Holding two packs static and loaded for a full second builds tension that has to go somewhere, and the pause became a countdown that both sides tried to anticipate. Early engagements, then resets, then more early engagements.
The pause went. Then the whole logic changed with the current sequence.
Crouch. The front rows drop into position. Heads and shoulders no lower than the hips, so nobody is diving. Each player's head goes to the left of his opposite number's head, which is what guarantees the gaps the heads will eventually occupy and keeps a skull from being driven into a neck. The hookers plant a brake foot, a foot placed forward to stop the pack sliding in early. Faults at this call are free kicks.
Bind. The referee makes this call only when the two front rows are square, stable and stationary at a distance where they can reach each other. The props then take hold of their opponents. Crucially, they are bound to each other before any pushing is permitted, which is the whole point of the change. Faults here are penalties.
Set. The hooker's brake foot comes out, the packs come together, and the tunnel between the two front rows exists for the first time. Faults at set are free kicks.
The mechanism is simple once you see it. Under the old sequence the packs were free bodies until the moment of impact, and all the energy of the closing distance went into the collision. Under the current one they are already connected. There is no closing distance left to accelerate through, so the engagement becomes a compression of two structures that are already touching rather than a crash between two that are not. World Rugby's own claim when it brought the sequence in was that it cut engagement forces by roughly a quarter in the elite game.
The thirty-second clock sits on top of all this. Once the referee marks the spot, both teams have half a minute to be ready to form. Miss it and the other side gets a free kick. That rule exists because a pack that is losing the scrum has an obvious interest in taking as long as possible to build the next one.

- The put-inThe scrum-half throws from outside the tunnel, without delay, in one forward movement, at speed, and straight enough that the ball first touches the ground inside the tunnel. Anything else is a free kick.
- The strikeA front-row player must play at the ball with one foot, not both. The feeding team's hooker failing to strike at all is a free kick.
- The shoveBoth packs drive along the middle line. A wheel past ninety degrees stops play and the scrum is reset with no sanction. Collapsing, boring in, standing an opponent up or dropping a bind are penalties.
- The ball leavesThe scrum ends when the ball comes out in any direction except back up the tunnel, when the number eight lifts it from a lock's feet, or when the scrum-half takes it from the hindmost foot. Until that instant everyone outside is five metres back.
The sequence a referee is working through. The sanction attached to each stage is what decides whether an error costs a reset, a free kick or a penalty.
The rugby scrum rules that decide who gets penalised
Ask a referee what he penalises most at scrum time and the honest answer is not "collapsing". It is binding, because a bad bind is what causes most of the collapsing.
The requirements are specific and they are not symmetrical.
Inside a front row, the two props bind onto the hooker and the hooker binds onto both props with both arms, either over or under theirs. There should be no daylight between the hooker and either prop. Between front rows, the loosehead binds by placing his left arm inside the right arm of the opposing tighthead. The tighthead binds by placing his right arm outside the left upper arm of the opposing loosehead. Both must grip the back or the side of the opponent's jersey, using the whole arm from hand to shoulder, and both must hold that grip from the bind call until the scrum ends.
Behind them, each lock binds onto the prop directly in front of him and onto the other lock. Every remaining player binds onto a lock's body with at least one arm. Every one of those requirements carries a penalty rather than a free kick, which tells you how seriously the law treats them.
Now the mechanics, which is where it becomes interesting.
A bind is not decoration. It is the structural connection that lets one man resist another man's force without changing shape. A prop who has a full-arm grip on the back of his opponent's jersey is holding a fixed point on a torso, and the load runs from that torso, through his arm and shoulder, into his own spine and down to the ground. Everything is in line.
A prop who has grabbed his opponent's arm, or his sleeve, or has a hand resting on the shoulder with no wrap at all, is holding a limb rather than a body. A limb can be pulled. It can be pulled downwards, and if you pull a bound prop's arm downwards while eight men push him forwards, he goes to the floor and there is nothing he can do about it. From the stand you see a scrum collapse. What happened is that somebody's hand was in the wrong place a second and a half earlier.
That is why the referee's eyes go to the hands at the bind call, and why a short bind is punished as a penalty even though nothing visible has yet gone wrong. It is the only element of the whole contest that can be checked before the load comes on.
The other structural offences follow from the same reasoning.
Boring in is a front rower driving across the axis of the scrum rather than along it, angling his shoulders inwards to attack the opposing hooker instead of pushing straight at his opposite number. It closes the tunnel, which is a competitive advantage, and it puts a sideways load into a spine that is braced fore and aft. A neck can resist compression along its axis to a degree. It cannot resist being folded.
Standing up is lifting an opponent, or driving upwards so that the opposing front row's feet come off the ground. A front rower lifted out of the scrum has his neck extended backwards with weight still on it and no way to shed the load. It is also, incidentally, a highly effective way to make the referee think the other side has done something wrong, which is one reason it is penalised firmly.
Collapsing is the one everybody names, and the mechanism is worth stating plainly rather than treating as an obvious evil. When a scrum drops, the front row hits the ground with arms bound and cannot break the fall. Behind them, eight men are still pushing into a structure that has stopped resisting. The player at the bottom of that is holding a head, a neck and a substantial fraction of a tonne, in a position he did not choose and cannot leave. There is no version of it that is safe, which is why it is a penalty regardless of whether the referee thinks it was deliberate.

The pattern is not arbitrary. Free kicks are attached to procedural failures, the things that stop the restart being fair. Penalties are attached to the things that put a spine at risk or that steal a structural advantage before the contest begins.
The put-in, and the argument that has run for a generation
The law on the feed is clear enough. The scrum-half must throw the ball in from the side he chose, standing outside the tunnel, without delay, in a single forward movement, at a quick speed, and straight, so that the ball first touches the ground inside the tunnel between the two front rows. Every one of those failures is a free kick.
Then comes the concession that has caused thirty years of shouting. The half is permitted to align his shoulders with the middle line of the scrum. Since he is standing on his own team's side of that line, aligning his shoulders to it means his hands are already a shoulder-width towards his own hooker before he releases the ball. A feed that is straight relative to his shoulders is therefore visibly angled relative to the tunnel.
This is why the argument never resolves. The people who say the feed is crooked are describing what they can see. The people who say it is legal are describing what the law asks. Both are right, and the gap between them is written into the text.
The honest way to think about it is to ask what the tunnel is now for.
In the amateur game, the put-in was a genuine contest. Two hookers struck for the ball with their feet, and a good one won ball against the feed regularly enough that the throwing side could not take possession for granted. The whole architecture of the scrum, the tunnel, the strike, the straightness requirement, was built for that contest.
The professional game removed it, and not by changing the law. It changed the players. Front rows became bigger and stronger, packs learned to shove as a unit rather than to hook, and the value of a scrum shifted from the ball it produced to the penalty it produced. Once your pack can move eight men backwards, striking for the ball is a distraction from pushing. The strike went, quietly, because it stopped being worth doing.
So the tunnel is now a delivery slot rather than a contest, and the straight-feed law is the surviving fossil of a competition the rest of the game has abandoned.
There are two coherent positions on that, and neither is silly. You can enforce the feed strictly and try to bring the strike back, accepting that the ball will sit in the scrum longer, that more scrums will collapse while it does, and that hookers will need a skill nobody has coached properly for two decades. Or you can accept that the feed belongs to the team awarded it, in which case the honest reform is to say so and stop pretending. What the game currently does is a third thing: keep the law, enforce it in bursts, and let the tolerance drift between competitions and between seasons.
Referees do periodically tighten it, usually at the start of a championship, and when they do the penalties arrive in clusters for a fortnight before everyone recalibrates. That is not inconsistency for its own sake. It is the visible edge of a law nobody has decided what to do with.
Does the hooker's strike still exist?
Partly, and mostly as a formality with one important exception.
The law requires that a front-row player from the feeding team strikes for the ball once it touches the ground in the tunnel. Not striking at all is a free kick, which was introduced precisely to stop halves feeding the ball straight past everyone to the number eight. Any front-row player may strike, using either foot, but not both feet at once.
That last restriction is a safety rule rather than a fairness one. A hooker striking with both feet has no feet on the ground, which means he is hanging in his binds with his neck loaded and no way to support himself. It is a penalty.
What has genuinely changed is what the strike is for. It is no longer a race for possession. It is a channel decision.
A hooker can strike the ball hard and early so that it comes back fast, through what forwards call channel one, arriving near the loosehead flanker's feet and available to the scrum-half almost immediately. That gives quick ball and a fast delivery to the backs, at the cost of the pack having no time to build a shove and no ball to hold while it does.
Or he can strike softly and late, keeping the ball under the second row, so the pack can push with the ball still in it. That is channel two, and it is the setup for a scrum the forwards intend to win by driving. It is also the setup for a scrum penalty, because a pack that is going forward with the ball still in the scrum is a pack that is generating exactly the pressure the opposition will eventually fail under.
The brake foot has quietly reshaped this. A hooker who has one foot planted forward to stabilise the scrum until the set call is not in a position to strike quickly at that instant, and the timing of everything after it shifts a fraction. Small law changes at the front of the sequence have effects at the back of it, which is a theme.
The number eight's licence matters here too. He may pick the ball up from the feet of a lock rather than waiting for it to arrive at his own, which was introduced to get the ball out faster. The consequence is that the ball can leave the scrum before the shove has finished, which is either a gift or an insult depending on which pack you are.
The scrum-half's two positions and the lines nobody draws on the pitch
The feeding scrum-half throws in and then works down the side of his own scrum to collect. While the ball is still in the scrum and he has possession of it, he must keep at least one foot level with or behind it. In practice this is a rule about not running around your own scrum while it is still forming.
The defending scrum-half is the more heavily regulated of the two, and his restrictions have been rewritten more than once. The intent has been stable: he is allowed to be a nuisance in a defined place, and not a nuisance everywhere.
His basic options are to take up a position beside his opposite number on his own team's side of the middle line, or to retire at least five metres behind the hindmost foot of his own scrum. Global law trials have narrowed this further, restricting how far forward he can stand relative to the centre line of the tunnel and requiring that if he retires, he retires permanently rather than drifting back in. Getting it wrong is a penalty, not a free kick.
Everyone else is simpler and stricter. Every player not in the scrum and not a scrum-half must stay at least five metres behind the hindmost foot of his own team's scrum. Not level with it. Five metres behind it.
That line is invisible, it moves as the scrum moves, and it is the origin of a category of penalty that spectators find completely baffling. A defensive line creeping up during a long scrum is not doing anything dramatic, but it is removing the space that the scrum exists to create. Awarding a penalty for it is the only sanction that gives that space back.
There is one variation worth knowing. If the hindmost foot of a scrum is in in-goal, or within five metres of the try line, the offside line becomes the try line itself. There is not enough pitch left to put anyone five metres back, so the law uses the line that is already there.
The flankers occupy an odd middle position in all this. They are in the scrum, so they are not subject to the five-metre line, but they must stay bound. A flanker who unbinds early to chase a scrum-half is offside the moment he does it, and the picture of a flanker breaking off a wheeling scrum to hunt the half is one of the more commonly penalised things in the professional game.
Wheeling, and the difference between turning and twisting
A wheel is a scrum rotating about its own centre. One side pushes harder on one flank than the other, or one side folds on one flank, and the whole structure swings.
Wheeling is not in itself illegal. A pack that is genuinely stronger on one side will naturally turn a scrum, and that is a legitimate product of a better shove. If the rotation goes past ninety degrees, so that the middle line of the scrum has swung beyond parallel with the touchline, the referee stops play and sets another scrum. There is no sanction, because at that point the structure has stopped being a scrum in any useful sense and nobody has necessarily done anything wrong.
Deliberately wheeling is a different act, and it is penalised. A pack that has no intention of pushing forwards but twists sideways to break the scrum up is spoiling, and it is doing it in a way that puts rotational load through the front rows. A neck that is compressed and twisted at the same time is in the worst position a neck can be in.
Telling the two apart is the referee's job and it is genuinely hard, because both look identical for the first thirty degrees. What he is watching for is whether the pack turning the scrum is also going forward. A wheel that comes with forward movement is a shove. A wheel that comes with no forward movement, or with backward movement on one side, is a twist.
Defending sides used to wheel deliberately as a tactic, because a wheeled scrum meant a reset and a reset meant another thirty seconds of not defending. Tightening the sanction removed most of that, and it is a good example of a law change that fixed a behaviour rather than a mechanic.
Why a dominant scrum is worth far more than the ball it wins
Here is the thing that makes the scrum strategically strange. A team that wins its own scrum ball gets one possession, on halfway, with fourteen backs already in position. That is worth something, but not very much.
A team that wins a scrum penalty gets something completely different, and the gap between those two outcomes is why packs are built the way they are.
- The whistleA scrum penalty stops the clock in the attacking side's favour and hands them a choice that a normal possession never offers. Nothing about it is contested by the defence.
- Option one, kick at goalWithin range, three points off a stationary ball with nobody allowed within ten metres. The most reliable points in rugby, and they cost one kick.
- Option two, kick to touchA penalty keeps the throw-in at the resulting lineout. That converts a scrum on halfway into an attacking lineout in the opposition twenty-two, without conceding possession.
- The lineout that followsAn attacking lineout inside the twenty-two is the launchpad for a driving maul, which is the single most efficient try-scoring platform in the professional game.
- Option three, scrum againA pack that has just won a penalty can take another scrum instead of kicking, betting on a second penalty from a better position, or a yellow card for repeated offending.
- The compounding effectReferees form a reading of which pack is going backwards and carry it into the next scrum. Dominance therefore pays twice: once in the decision it wins, and again in the decisions that follow it.
The chain of options a penalty opens up. Three points is the value of a successful penalty kick under the scoring laws; nothing else here is a figure.
Work through the arithmetic of that and the scrum stops looking like a restart and starts looking like an artillery piece. A pack that wins one penalty per half from scrums is generating attacking positions from nothing, in a phase of play the opposition cannot decline. You can refuse to contest a ruck. You cannot refuse to pack down.
Three further effects sit on top of the obvious ones.
Fatigue. A contested scrum is maximal anaerobic work for eight men. A pack that is losing does more of it, holds it for longer, and gets nothing for it. Repeated resets are punishing in a way that does not show on a possession chart, and they are punishing specifically for the side that is failing.
Selection pressure. The threat of a scrum penalty forces the other coach to pick for the scrum, which usually means heavier and slower. A pack picked to survive a set piece is a pack that is worse in the loose, so the advantage propagates into phases of play that have nothing to do with scrums.
Decision-making. A side that trusts its scrum takes scrums from free kicks, kicks to the corner instead of at goal, and turns down attacking positions in favour of set-piece ones. A side that does not trust it kicks its penalties, avoids contact near its own line, and plays a more conservative game everywhere. Scrum dominance changes what a team is willing to attempt.
This is also where the difference between the codes is starkest. Rugby league retains a scrum in name, but it is uncontested, unpushed and functionally a way of restarting play with a marker on the field. Once you remove the contest, you remove all of the above, and the two games diverge completely at that point. Most of what separates league from union traces back to a small number of choices about which contests to keep, and this is one of the largest.
The referee's problem is that he is judging eight men against eight
Now the part that explains the crowd's confusion better than any individual law.
At a scrum, the referee is trying to identify which of sixteen players caused a structure to fail. He can see six of them properly. The other ten are behind the front rows, bound in, doing work he cannot observe directly and can only infer from its effects.
Worse, force in a scrum is transmitted. A lock who is pushing at an angle, or a flanker who is not pushing at all, or a number eight who has dropped his bind, changes the load on a prop three bodies in front of him. When that prop's shape fails, the prop is the visible event. He is not the cause.
Four things follow, and they explain most of what looks like inconsistency.
The referee watches the bind because it is the only thing he can verify. Hands are visible before the load comes on. Angles become visible during it. Everything else is inference. So the first scrum penalty of a match is very often a bind penalty, not because binds fail more often than anything else, but because a bind is the one offence a referee can be certain about.
He referees from one side, and it is the same side every time. The referee stands where he can see the tunnel and the ball, which puts him on one flank. The far side of the scrum is a set of shoulders and a wall of backs. Assistant referees help, but they are watching touchlines and offside lines as well.
He calibrates rather than adjudicating from cold. Most referees will reset a first offence, talk to the two front rows, and only then start penalising. That is not leniency, it is data collection: you find out which side is going backwards by watching it happen twice. It also means the same technical fault genuinely does carry different consequences in minute four and minute sixty-four.
Talk is part of the mechanism. A well-miked referee at a scrum spends more of his time talking than whistling. He is telling a prop to stay square, telling a hooker his bind is short, telling a pack to stop driving early. Those instructions are not commentary. They are a warning system that means the next offence is a penalty rather than a reset, and the crowd cannot hear any of it.
Scrum decisions also sit almost entirely outside the review system. The television match official's remit is narrow and it does not extend to reviewing whether a prop's bind was legal. What the officials can and cannot go back and look at is far more limited than most viewers assume, and a scrum penalty is one of the clearest examples: it is the referee's call, in real time, on incomplete information, and it stands.
None of that makes every decision correct. Referees get scrums wrong regularly and always will, because the information they need is inside a structure they cannot see into. But the gap between what a spectator sees and what a referee is deciding is enormous here, and most apparent randomness lives in that gap rather than in the officiating.
How law tweaks keep moving the balance
Three separate levers get pulled on the scrum, and it is useful to keep them apart.
Safety changes reduce the load on the front row. The engagement sequence rewrites and the brake foot are both of this type. Their side effect is always to reduce the value of raw momentum and increase the value of technique, because they remove the moment when a heavier pack could simply arrive faster.
Speed changes try to get the ball out sooner and produce more open play. The thirty-second clock, the number eight's licence to pick from a lock's feet, and the tightening of the defending scrum-half's position all belong here. Their side effect is to reduce the time a dominant pack has to convert its advantage into a penalty.
Contest changes adjust who is favoured to win the ball. Feed enforcement is the main one. Its side effect runs the other way, because a contested put-in keeps the ball in the scrum longer and gives the stronger pack more time to work.
Those levers pull against each other, which is why scrum law never settles. Make the scrum safer and you make it more technical, which makes it slower. Make it faster and you devalue the shove, which makes a dominant pack's advantage harder to cash in. Make the feed a real contest and you slow the ball down again. Every reform buys something at the cost of something else, and the reason the game keeps returning to the same set of adjustments is that there is no configuration that gives all three.
The pattern is visible in how the changes arrive, too. Safety changes are applied globally and quickly, because nobody argues about necks. Speed and contest changes tend to arrive as trials in designated competitions, run for a season or two, and either spread or vanish. That is why a competition in one hemisphere can be playing a slightly different scrum from a competition in the other, and why a law you were sure existed can quietly stop existing.
There is a further consequence that goes beyond the scrum itself. Because the scrum is a penalty generator, anything that changes how easily scrum penalties are won changes the value of a place kicker and the shape of a game plan. How the points are distributed across the scoring methods determines whether three points from a scrum penalty is a good return or a wasted attacking position, and coaches make that calculation every time their pack wins a shove.
Watching a scrum and knowing who is winning it
Most people watch the ball at a scrum, which tells you nothing, because at a scrum the ball is the last thing to matter and the first thing to leave.
Watch these instead.
Before the set, watch the gap and the feet. A pack that is confident takes its time, gets square, and gets its feet in position. A pack that is worried is fidgeting, resetting its bind, and looking at the referee. Front rows tell you a great deal in the four seconds before contact.
At the set, watch the hips of the two looseheads. The loosehead has the free shoulder, so he is the one who can work upwards. If a loosehead's hips are dropping while his shoulders stay up, he is being folded and his side is in trouble. If they are level and he is driving through his heels, he is winning.
During the push, watch the feet, not the shoulders. Shoulders can be made to look good. Feet cannot. The pack going forward is the pack whose back five are taking short, driving steps. The pack going backwards has feet that are stepping sideways, or not moving at all, or scrabbling.
Watch the tunnel angle. A scrum that is square has a straight seam between the two front rows. A seam that has bent means somebody is boring in, and the side with the bend running into it is the side about to concede or collapse.
Watch when the ball appears. A pack under pressure gets the ball out fast, because the alternative is a penalty. A pack in control leaves it in, sometimes for a long time, because every extra second of forward drive makes the penalty more likely. If the number eight has the ball at his feet and is doing nothing with it, his side is winning and knows it.
Watch the two scrum-halves' body language. The defending half is the best-informed person on the pitch about what is happening inside a scrum. If he has stopped watching the ball and started watching the referee, he already knows what is coming.
Do that for three or four scrums and something shifts. You will start seeing the penalty a second before the whistle, which is roughly when the referee sees it too, and the set piece stops being an inexplicable interruption and becomes the most legible contest on the field.

Why do rugby scrums collapse so often?
