World Athletics Championships format, round by round
The 49-event programme, the four routes in, heats and fastest losers, twelve to a field final, the lane draw nobody reads, and the new Ultimate Championship.

The World Athletics Championships format is a scheduling problem before it is a sporting one. Around fifty finals have to be resolved inside nine days, in one stadium, using one track, with athletes who cannot recover overnight and a television schedule that wants the good bits in the evening.
Everything about the structure follows from that. The number of rounds, the size of a field event final, the way lanes are handed out, the qualifying standard that ends a thrower's morning after one attempt: none of it is arbitrary, and almost all of it is written down in rules that are public and that hardly anybody reads.
What follows is the machinery. Not the medal table.

Programme size is the count of medal events at the most recent edition. The entry limit and the field event minimum are fixed by the competition and technical rules.
The odd-year cycle is a deliberate piece of calendar engineering
The championships run every two years, in odd-numbered years. That pattern has held since 1991, after the first editions were spaced more widely while the sport worked out whether an event of this size could be sustained at all.
The odd-year choice does three things at once.
It keeps the championships clear of the Olympic Games, so the two global titles never compete for the same summer. It gives athletes a world title to aim at in the years between Games, which matters enormously for funding, since national sports agencies allocate money against results at global championships rather than against times. And it produces a rhythm in which almost every senior athlete has a major target every year once continental championships are counted, which is what a professional sport needs if it wants its athletes to be worth paying attention to more than once every four years.
The only break in the odd-year sequence came when the edition due in 2021 was moved to 2022, because the Olympic Games themselves had shifted a year and the two could not both occupy the same summer. The cycle resumed immediately afterwards.
Hosting rotates. The most recent edition was staged in Tokyo, at the Japan National Stadium, across nine days in September, and the next is due in Beijing. Both are Olympic stadiums, which is not a coincidence: very few cities own a venue with the track, the warm-up facility, the media capacity and the transport that this event needs, and most of the ones that do built it for a Games.
Forty-nine events, and a programme that mirrors itself
The programme runs to 49 medal events. Its structure is simpler than the number suggests, because the men's and women's programmes match each other event for event, with two exceptions on each side: the sprint hurdles differ in distance and barrier height, and the combined event is a decathlon on one side and a heptathlon on the other. One mixed relay sits on top.
That symmetry is the single biggest constraint on the timetable. Almost every discipline has to be staged twice, so a session that contains a men's hammer final has to find room for a women's hammer final somewhere else in the week, and every round of every track event exists in two versions.
Three groups of events escape the stadium entirely. The marathons and the race walks are held on the roads, usually early in the morning or late at night for heat, and their scheduling is driven by temperature rather than by television. That is why the road events often bookend the championships and why they are the sessions most likely to move.
The combined events are their own sub-championship: ten events over two days in a fixed order for the decathlon, seven for the heptathlon, run inside the main programme while everything else carries on around them. A decathlete competes in more separate events than any other athlete in the stadium, and the way those performances convert into a single number is a piece of arithmetic worth understanding on its own.
Getting in is four competitions, none of which happen at the championships
Qualification is where the field is actually decided, and it happens over a year or more before anyone arrives.
There are four routes.
The entry standard. A published mark for each event, which an athlete has to achieve inside a defined qualification window. The window is not the same length for every event. The marathon and the long race walk get the longest window, because those events cannot be raced often. The 10,000m, the shorter walk, the combined events and the relays get a medium one. Everything else gets the shortest, which in practice means roughly one full season plus the tail of the one before.
Designated placings. Certain results qualify an athlete regardless of the mark. Area champions in the individual events come in this way, conditional on there being no better entry by ranking from the same area in the same event. In the marathon, high finishers at the top-label road races qualify by position, which is the sport acknowledging that a marathon time is a product of course and conditions as much as of the runner.
Wild cards. The defending world champion holds one. So do the winners of the season-long circuits: the Diamond League, the World Race Walking Tour, the World Combined Events Tour. There is a separate provision for the leading hammer throwers on the Continental Tour, which exists because the hammer is not part of every circuit and would otherwise be short of a route that the other throws have.
The world rankings. Whatever is left of the target field for each event is filled from the rankings at the close of the window. This is the route that catches the athletes who are consistently very good without ever producing the one big mark, and it is the reason the ranking system exists at all. The mechanics of how a ranking score is built, and why a season of solid results can beat one spectacular afternoon, are set out in the ranking rules.
Underneath all four sits a set of validity conditions that quietly disqualify a great many performances. Marks achieved with an illegal tailwind, or with no wind reading available at all, are not accepted for entry standards, which is why a broken gauge at a small meeting can cost an athlete a season. Hand times are not accepted in the short events. Track performances from mixed-sex races do not count. Road marks have to come from a course measured by an accredited measurer and one that meets the elevation drop limit. Entry limits then bite. Three qualified athletes per country per event is the ceiling, rising to four where one holds a wild card, with one more permitted as a reserve. Relays are limited to one team per country, with a squad of up to six, and the individuals entered in the 100m and 400m have to be inside the corresponding relay squads.
Relay qualification is a separate contest again. The bulk of the sixteen places in each relay go to the highest finishers at the World Athletics Relays, with the remainder filled by ranking. That produces the odd situation where a nation with four outstanding individual sprinters can miss the championships in the 4x100m entirely because its squad fumbled a changeover at a qualifying meeting eighteen months earlier, which is less unfair than it sounds once you understand how much of a relay is technique rather than speed.
The last filter is the one people forget. Qualifying does not get you selected. National federations run their own selection policies on top of the World Athletics system, and those policies routinely add requirements: a domestic championship an athlete has to contest, a declaration form and a deadline, a secondary standard for anyone entering by ranking, a selection panel with explicit discretion to leave qualified athletes at home. A country with four athletes over the standard and three places has to cut one, and it does so under criteria that usually include head-to-head record, championship history and how repeatable the performances look. The World Athletics system decides who is eligible. Somebody else decides who goes, and the two lists are frequently different. The equivalent process for the Olympic Games, where the pressure on places is even sharper, works along the same lines.

- Run the semi-finalThe same rule again, with tighter numbers. Lanes are now allocated by rank rather than by lot, so the fastest qualifiers get the middle of the track.
- Run the finalEight athletes, one round, no aggregate, no time requirement. The medal goes to whoever crosses first, at whatever speed the race happens to be run.
The middle three steps are what the championships themselves add. Everything above them happened months earlier and is decided by paperwork.
Heats and fastest losers: how dozens become eight
The rules say a qualification round is held whenever the field is too large for the event to be conducted satisfactorily as a single final. In practice that means almost every track event on the programme.
The mechanism is always the same shape. Athletes are divided into heats. A fixed number of finishers in each heat advance automatically, and a fixed number of additional places go to the fastest of the athletes who did not finish high enough. Results carry the notation everyone half-recognises: capital Q for an automatic qualifier, lower case q for a time qualifier.
The reason for the two-tier system is worth stating, because it is not obvious. If advancement were purely on time, a tactical heat run slowly by strong athletes would eliminate people who would beat everyone in the fast heat. If it were purely on place, a heat containing three of the world's best would send two of them home while a weaker heat advanced athletes with much worse marks. Automatic places plus fastest losers is the compromise: win your heat and you are safe regardless of the clock, and if your heat was slow because it was tactical, the fastest-loser places protect the athletes who were caught behind it.
The numbers narrow fast. In the most recent championships, the men's 200m ran six heats, from which the first three in each heat plus the six fastest others went through, producing twenty-four semi-finalists. Three semi-finals then sent the first two in each plus the two fastest others to the final, producing eight.
Some events add a round in front of that. The 100m is normally run with a preliminary round before the heats, contested by athletes who arrived with the weakest marks, including those entered under universality provisions. The purpose is to keep the main rounds at a workable size without turning away athletes whose federations are entitled to send them.
The consequence for the athletes is a workload nobody outside the sport thinks about. A sprinter who goes through a preliminary round, heats, a semi-final and a final has run four maximal efforts in a few days, all of them at a speed the body can only produce a handful of times before it stops producing it. A championship 100m is not won by the fastest athlete of the season. It is won by the fastest athlete on the fourth attempt.
One recent innovation has not crossed over. The repechage round, in which athletes eliminated in the heats get a second chance to reach the semi-finals, appeared at the Olympic Games in Paris. The World Championships in Tokyo the following year ran the traditional structure instead: heats, semi-finals, final, with no second chance. The two competitions do not have to match, and at present they do not.
Minimum recovery times are what actually build the timetable
The single most useful thing in the rules for anyone trying to understand why a championship timetable looks the way it does is a short table of minimum intervals between rounds.
Where practicable, at least forty-five minutes must separate the last heat of a round from the first heat of the next round or the final in events up to and including 200m. Over 200m and up to 1000m, the gap rises to ninety minutes. Over 1000m, the rounds may not be held on the same day at all.
Those three lines dictate the shape of the week. They are why a 200m semi-final and final can sit in the same evening session, an hour apart, and why a 5000m heat and final never can. They are why the 800m, which sits just inside the ninety-minute band, is scheduled with more air around it than the 400m. And they are the reason a nine-day championships cannot be compressed much further without either dropping events or accepting that middle-distance runners will be asked to race in a state the rules were written to prevent.
The minimums are also a floor rather than a target. A good timetable gives athletes considerably more than forty-five minutes, and the interval only shrinks towards the limit when weather, a delayed session or a re-run has pushed the schedule out of shape.
The lane draw after the first round is a written reward
Lane allocation is one of the few genuinely competitive advantages that the rules hand out on merit, and it is set out in a level of detail that surprises people.
For the first round, and for any preliminary round, lanes are drawn by lot. Nobody has earned anything yet.
After the first round, the athletes are ranked, and then three separate draws are made. The four highest ranked athletes are drawn among lanes three, four, five and six. The fifth and sixth ranked are drawn between lanes seven and eight. The two lowest ranked go into lanes one and two.
That is a hierarchy dressed up as a lottery. Lane one has the tightest bend and the most centripetal load, so an athlete running it is fighting the curve harder than anyone. Lane eight has the gentlest bend but the worst information, because the runner in it starts furthest forward and cannot see a single opponent until late in the race. The middle lanes have neither problem, and they go to the athletes who ran fastest in the previous round.
There is a separate provision for the 800m, which may be run in lanes for the first part or with a group start behind a curved line, depending on the level of competition. At a global championship the lane version is normally reserved for the first round, and the later rounds go to a mass start with all its attendant elbows.
Field events run two competitions, and only the second one counts
A field event at a World Championships is really two events with the same name.
The first is the qualifying round. Athletes are divided into two or more groups of roughly equal strength, with athletes from the same country separated where possible, and each group competes on its own. In the throws and horizontal jumps, each athlete gets up to three attempts. A qualifying standard is set in advance by the technical delegates, and the moment an athlete reaches it, they stop. Their day is over and they are in the final.
That produces the most distinctive strategic situation in athletics. A thrower who hits the standard with their first attempt walks off the infield having done one throw. A thrower who needs all three has done three, has been warmed up for an extra hour, and goes into the final at a physical and mental disadvantage that no result sheet will ever record.
If enough athletes clear the standard, that is the final field. If not, the field is expanded by adding the best performances from the qualifying round until the required number is reached, and if two athletes are tied for the last place, both go through. At a global championship the target is at least twelve in a final.
The crucial rule, and the one casual viewers get wrong every time: qualifying performances do not carry into the final. An athlete who produces the longest throw of the entire competition in the qualifying round starts the final on zero like everybody else. The qualifying round decides who competes. It decides nothing else.
The vertical jumps work on completely different logic, because you cannot have three attempts at a height and then stop. In a high jump or pole vault qualifying round, athletes continue, jumping or passing, until they are eliminated by three consecutive failures or until the last attempt at the qualifying height, unless the required number for the final has already been reached. The rules also recommend a rest day between qualifying and final in the vertical jumps at any competition running more than three days, which is an acknowledgement that a pole vault qualifying round can last several hours and end near midnight.
- Groups are drawnThe field is split into two or more groups of approximately equal strength, with athletes from the same country separated wherever possible. Groups compete one after another unless the venue allows both at once.
- Up to three attempts in qualifyingThe qualifying standard is set in advance by the technical delegates. Once an athlete reaches it they stop competing immediately, whether that took one attempt or three.
- The final field is setEveryone who reached the standard is in. If too few did, the field is filled up by best performance until the required number is reached, and a tie for the last place puts both athletes through.
- Qualifying marks are discardedNothing achieved in the qualifying round counts towards the final. The longest throw of the whole competition can happen in the morning and be worth nothing but a place.
- Three trials for everyoneThe final opens with three attempts each, in an order drawn by lot, with the competition ranked on each athlete's best valid mark.
- The cut to eightThe eight athletes with the best valid performances get three further attempts. Anyone who has not produced a measured mark in the first three is out, even if that leaves fewer than eight competing.
- Three more trials, in reverse orderThe order for the closing rounds runs from the lowest ranked athlete to the leader, so the athlete in first place throws or jumps last and always knows exactly what is required.
The cut after three trials in the final is the moment the competition changes character. Everything before it is about surviving; everything after it is about the order of competing, which reverses.
Once a final is under way, the rule for more than eight athletes is three trials each, with the best eight then allowed three more. Where eight or fewer are entered, each athlete gets six. The order for the closing rounds is reversed, so the leader competes last, which is the single most deliberate piece of theatre in the sport and also the fairest arrangement available: the athlete in front is the one who has to answer, rather than the one who sets a target and sits down.
A championship is a placing competition, and that changes everything
Nothing in the rules requires a final to be fast. There is no time standard to win a medal, no minimum distance for gold, no requirement that the winner beat anything except the other seven people on the track.
That sounds obvious and it is the single largest difference between a championship and the rest of the season. On the circuit, a 1500m is arranged with pacemakers, a target time and a field assembled to produce it, because a fast race is the product being sold. A championship 1500m has no pacemaker, three rounds in the legs of everyone in it, and a winner who only has to be in front at the line. The two events share a name and almost nothing else, which is why the season's fastest athlete and the world champion are so often different people, and why the season-long circuit selects for a different quality altogether.
The rounds are the mechanism. A finalist in a middle-distance event has usually raced twice already, and a sprinter three times. That accumulated load rewards durability, recovery and the ability to run just fast enough to advance without spending anything extra. Athletes who can only produce one enormous performance a week tend not to be world champions, however fast that one performance is.
Ties are allowed to stand, and a race can be ordered again
Two provisions govern what happens when the competition produces an answer the format did not anticipate.
The first concerns ties. On the track, if the judges and the photo finish cannot separate two athletes for a place, it is a tie and the tie stands. There is no run-off and no countback for a finishing position, which is why two athletes can share a medal. Where a tie affects a ranking position used to seed the next round, the chief photo finish judge goes to the actual times recorded to a thousandth of a second, and if those are equal too, lots are drawn for the higher ranking.
In the throws and horizontal jumps, ties are resolved by countback: the second best performance of the tied athletes decides it, then the third best, and so on down the series. If the athletes are still level after the whole series has been compared, the tie stands, including for first place. Only the vertical jumps have their own separate machinery, where the count of failures at the decisive height and the total number of failures come into play before anything else.
The second provision concerns interference. If an athlete is jostled or obstructed so as to impede their progress, and the referee judges that they were seriously affected, the referee may order the race to be held again for one athlete, some of them, or all of them, or may instead allow the affected athlete straight into the next round. Where another athlete caused it, that athlete is liable to disqualification and any re-run excludes them. In both cases the affected athlete should normally have completed the race with genuine effort, which stops the provision being used by anybody who stopped running the moment contact occurred.
That is the escape valve the format needs. A championship built on rounds cannot simply accept that a collision in a heat ends somebody's competition, and the rules give the referee two ways out: run it again, or move the athlete up.
Protests take thirty minutes, appeals take a hundred dollars
The disputes procedure is tightly timed and hardly ever explained.
A protest about the result or conduct of an event has to be made within thirty minutes of the official announcement of that result, which is why organisers are required to record the time at which every result is announced. It is made orally to the referee, by the athlete, by somebody acting for them, or by an official team representative, and only by a party competing in the same round of the same event. The referee can decide it or refer it upward, and can look at any evidence they think necessary, including official video.
An appeal against the referee's decision goes to the jury of appeal, again within thirty minutes, this time in writing and signed, and it has to be accompanied by a deposit of one hundred US dollars or the local equivalent. The deposit is forfeited if the appeal is not allowed. The jury normally consists of three, five or seven people, and members do not take part in deliberations concerning any matter involving their own country.
The deposit is the interesting part. It is small enough that no federation is deterred by the money, and large enough that an appeal has to be worth filing. It exists to make people think for thirty seconds before they contest a result on principle.
Some decisions cannot be appealed at all in any meaningful sense. A start information system reading that produces a disqualification is one of them, and the reasons why are set out in the rules governing the start.
A second world title arrived in 2026, with the opposite format
For most of its history the sport has had one world championship. It now has two, and they are built on incompatible principles.
The World Athletics Ultimate Championship began in September 2026, staged in Budapest at the National Athletics Centre across three days. It runs in even-numbered years, so it alternates with the World Championships rather than competing with them.
Everything about its format is a reaction to the one described above. The programme is cut to 28 events, with the long distance events and the steeplechase left out. Fields are tiny: sixteen athletes in an individual track event, eight in a field event, eight teams in a relay. Sessions are designed to run under three hours.
Those field sizes are the whole design. Sixteen athletes in a track event means one round and a final, not three rounds across five days. Eight athletes in a field event means no qualifying round at all, six attempts each, and a competition that starts with everyone who is going to be in it. The rounds problem disappears because the numbers were chosen to make it disappear.
Entry is largely by invitation. Reigning Olympic champions, reigning world champions and Diamond League final winners are invited directly, with the remaining places filled from the world rankings. Relay places go mostly to the leading finishers at the World Athletics Relays with a small number of additional selections. The prize fund is far larger than the World Championships pays, and the current figures are published by World Athletics.
Whether the sport can support two world titles is an open question, and the honest answer is that nobody knows yet. The case for the Ultimate Championship is that a nine-day, 49-event programme is close to unwatchable for anyone who is not already committed, and that a three-day event with only the best sixteen athletes in each event is a product a broadcaster can actually sell. The case against is that scarcity is what makes a world title valuable, and that having one every September rather than every other September halves the scarcity by definition.
There is a third global championship on the calendar as well. The indoor world championships run on their own cycle, on a 200m banked track, with a programme reshaped by the building: 60m instead of 100m, no javelin, hammer or discus, no steeplechase, and a combined event of seven disciplines for men and five for women. Indoor marks are kept in a separate record list, and the indoor season sits in the winter where it does not compete with anything outdoors.
What to look at when the timetable is published
The timetable tells you more about a championships than the entry lists do. Five things are worth checking.
How many rounds each event has. Three rounds for a sprint means three maximal efforts before the final. Two rounds means the final is fresher and probably faster.
When the semi-final sits relative to the final. A semi-final on the same evening as a final is a different event from one held the night before, and it favours a different kind of athlete entirely.
Where the field event qualifying rounds fall. A qualifying round in a morning session with a final two nights later is comfortable. A qualifying round the previous evening is not, particularly in the pole vault, where the qualifying round can run for hours.
What time the road events start. Marathons and walks moved to unusual hours are being scheduled around temperature, and that tells you what conditions the organisers expect.
Which finals share a session. Two field event finals running through a track programme means the crowd's attention is divided and the athletes are competing through the noise of somebody else's race. It happens more than the schedule makes obvious, and it is one of the quiet differences between competing at a world championship and competing anywhere else in the sport.
