Newlands: the ground itself

Newlands sits in the southern suburbs of Cape Town, in the wooded valley between Table Mountain and the M3, a couple of miles from the city centre and next door to the rugby ground of the same name. Capacity is roughly 25,000. Test cricket has been played here since 1889, when Newlands hosted one of the two matches that began Test cricket in South Africa — against England, as it happens, so the two sides have been meeting on this square for the best part of 140 years.

The ground has been modernised in pieces rather than rebuilt, which is why it still feels like a cricket ground and not a stadium. The Railway Stand runs along one side. The President's Pavilion and the Members' area sit behind the bowler's arm at the Wynberg end. The Kelvin Grove end takes its name from the club across the road, and the open grass embankments beneath the oak trees on that side are where a large part of the crowd chooses to sit, on rugs, under umbrellas, with a cooler box — a habit closer to an English county festival than to a Test match.

The backdrop is what everyone remembers. Table Mountain fills the sightline behind one side of the ground; when the south-easterly wind pushes cloud over the summit the famous 'tablecloth' spills down the face of it during a session, and the light changes with it. Devil's Peak sits to the left. It is the only Test ground in the world where the scenery is a legitimate reason to buy a ticket.

The wind, the weather and the pitch

Two features define cricket at Newlands, and both are worth understanding before the toss.

The first is the south-easter, the wind Capetonians call the Cape Doctor. It blows hard through the Cape summer, sometimes for days at a stretch, and at Newlands it runs across the ground rather than down it. Bowlers here talk about which end they want in the same terms an English seamer talks about the Pavilion End at Lord's; swinging the ball into the breeze from one end while the other offers seam is a specifically Newlands skill. On a still morning at this ground the ball can hoop alarmingly; on a windy afternoon it flattens out.

The second is the surface. Newlands is at sea level, which alone makes it a different proposition from the two Highveld grounds that precede it — the ball does not carry the way it does at Centurion or the Wanderers, and edges that fly to the slips in Gauteng die in front of them here. The square has historically offered seam movement and swing early, then flattened for a day or two, then deteriorated: fourth and fifth-day pitches at Newlands have often gripped and turned, and the finger spinner who was a passenger on day one becomes the most dangerous bowler in the match by day five.

That pattern makes Newlands one of the few venues where a genuine result is likely and where a fourth-innings chase is properly hard. England's most recent Test here bears it out: in January 2020 they won by 189 runs after Ben Stokes broke through the tail in the last hour of the final day, with 8.2 overs left in the match. Games at this ground go the distance and then turn in an evening.

No prices had been published at the time of writing and none are invented here.

Hospitality packages sold through official tour operators are the reliable fallback and are priced accordingly. If you cannot get in, the grass banks at the Kelvin Grove end are usually the last general-admission tickets to go.

Getting to Newlands, and the trip generally

The ground is on the Southern Line of Cape Town's suburban rail network, with Newlands station a short walk away and Claremont one stop further for more services and more taxis. Buses run along Main Road through Rondebosch and Claremont. Driving is possible but street parking around the ground is heavily restricted on match days and the surrounding roads are narrow; ride-hailing to Claremont and walking the last stretch is the usual compromise.

For a British supporter, Cape Town in early January is straightforward in every respect except cost. Direct overnight flights run from London, the time difference is two hours so there is effectively no jet lag, and January is high summer with temperatures commonly in the high twenties. Accommodation over the New Year is the exception: this is the most expensive fortnight of the Cape Town year and rooms are booked many months in advance.

If you are combining this Test with the earlier matches, the Highveld pair can be done from a single base and Cape Town needs a separate two-hour internal flight. Kirstenbosch, the Constantia wine estates and the mountain itself are all within twenty minutes of the ground, which makes rest days easier to fill here than anywhere else on the tour.
