Kagiso Rabada Takes Wickets Faster Than Anyone

There are two ways for a fast bowler to be valuable. He can be hard to score off, which wins matches by attrition, or he can take wickets often, which wins them by removing the people making the runs. The great bowlers usually do both. Kagiso Rabada does the second one better than almost anyone who has played the game, and the first one only intermittently, and the consistency of that pattern across two entirely different formats is the most interesting thing about him.
In the Indian Premier League he has 151 wickets in 101 matches at a strike rate of 15.2 balls each. In Test cricket he passed 300 wickets faster than any bowler in the history of the format measured by balls bowled. Those are the same statistic in two different competitions, and it is not an accident that it is the strike rate rather than the average or the economy rate that shows up in both.
The franchise record
Computed from the ball-by-ball archive of every IPL match played through the 2026 season: 2,299 deliveries, 3,367 runs, 151 wickets. An average of 22.30, an economy rate of 8.79 and a wicket every 15.2 balls.
That strike rate is the headline. Among bowlers who have taken more than 130 wickets in the competition, nobody takes them more frequently. The average of 22.30 is also the best of any bowler at that volume. The economy rate of 8.79 is worse than most of the bowlers he is being compared with, and that combination — best average, best strike rate, indifferent economy rate — is the shape of his entire career.

The death row is extraordinary. Sixty-nine wickets at 16.22, with a wicket every 9.9 deliveries — better than one every two overs, in the phase where batters are hitting from the first ball. Very few bowlers in the tournament's history have a death strike rate under ten balls across a sample of that size.
The powerplay is where the bulk of his work has been done: 1,089 deliveries, nearly half his career, for 54 wickets at 29.22. That is a useful rather than dominant new-ball return, and it is where his economy rate is generated. He is genuinely fast and he bowls a full length, which in the first six overs means the ball is either taking an edge or going through the covers.
The method, and why it produces this shape
Rabada bowls at high pace with a slightly open-chested action and an unusual amount of natural away movement, and his stock ball is fuller than most fast bowlers of his speed dare to bowl in T20. That is the whole explanation. A full, fast ball is a wicket-taking ball — it hits the stumps and the pads and finds the outside edge — and it is also a ball that a set batter can hit through the line for four if he gets it slightly wrong.
He does not have a great slower ball and has never relied on one. He has a very good yorker, and his death-overs record is built on the fact that a yorker at his pace is close to unplayable and a slightly missed yorker at his pace is a full toss. That is why his death economy rate is 9.82 and his death strike rate is under ten balls: the same delivery produces both numbers depending on whether it lands.
This is the opposite trade to the one Harshal Patel makes, and it arrives at a similar destination by a different route — wickets bought with runs. The difference is that Rabada's version does not decay as batters get used to it, because there is nothing to get used to. You cannot solve a well-directed yorker at 145 kilometres an hour by anticipating it.

Seventy-three wickets at 18.92 for Delhi Capitals is the core of the record and among the best sustained franchise spells by any overseas fast bowler. Those years produced his two heaviest seasons: 26 wickets at 14.42 in 2019, and 32 wickets at 17.19 in 2020, the latter winning him the Purple Cap in the season Delhi reached their first final.
His best figures are 4 for 21, at the Chinnaswamy in April 2019, and he took a second four-wicket haul a week later at Uppal. The 2019 average of 14.42 is the best of any full season he has played.

The 2025 line is the anomaly and it has a specific explanation: he was serving a suspension after failing a test for recreational drug use, which he acknowledged publicly, and he played only a fragment of the season. It is a short and bad line in the record rather than a decline.
The 2026 recovery — 29 wickets at 21.59, his second-largest haul — is the relevant number. A bowler of 30 who returns from a suspension and an interrupted year to take 29 wickets in a season is not on the way out.
The Test career, which is the bigger one
Rabada has taken more than 320 Test wickets at an average around 22, and he reached 300 of them in fewer balls than any bowler in the history of Test cricket. He is the third-fastest South African to the mark in terms of matches, behind Dale Steyn and Allan Donald, which places him immediately in the line of the best fast bowling tradition any country has produced. He has held the number one position in the ICC Test bowling rankings.
The single innings that will define him came in June 2025, in the World Test Championship final at Lord's. He took 5 for 51 on the first day, bowling Australia out for 212, and nine wickets across the match, and South Africa won by five wickets to claim their first ICC men's title in twenty-seven years. He was the first South African to take a five-wicket haul in a WTC final.
The context makes it heavier. South African cricket has spent decades being the best side that never won anything, a reputation earned across a long series of knockout defeats. The man who ended it was a fast bowler who took wickets more quickly than anyone in the format's history, in the match where wickets mattered most, having come back from a suspension weeks earlier.
Where the strike rate comes from, in both formats
The reason the same statistic dominates his record in Tests and in T20 is that the underlying quality is neither pace nor movement in isolation but something narrower: he bowls a very high proportion of deliveries that could take a wicket. A fast full length at high pace, moving away, is a wicket ball in every format. In a Test it produces edges over a long spell. In the last over of a T20 it produces stumps and mishits.
What that quality does not produce is control, and the record is honest about it. His IPL economy rate of 8.79 is not good. His Test average of around 22 is excellent, but his Test economy rate is high for a bowler of that class, and he has been expensive in one-day cricket at times. He is not a bowler you use to hold an end while somebody else attacks; he is the attack, and the price of that is runs.
The comparison that clarifies the type is Jasprit Bumrah, who has similar wicket-taking frequency and considerably better control, and who has occupied the top of the same rankings. Bumrah is the more complete bowler. Rabada is the more single-minded one, and across 2,299 IPL deliveries and more than 300 Test wickets he has demonstrated that the single quality, applied at that level, is nearly enough on its own.
