Career
Rohit Sharma spent the first six years of his international career as a middle-order batter of obvious talent and inconsistent output. The decision to move him to the top of the ODI order in 2013 changed everything: given time to see off the new ball, his ability to hit through the line without apparent effort turned into the most productive opening career of his generation.
His signature is the pull shot played off the front foot and the ability to convert starts into very large scores rather than merely good ones. That conversion rate is what separates his ODI record — he is the only batter to have made three double centuries in the format — from contemporaries with similar averages.
He took over the India captaincy across formats in 2022 and led the side through a run of major tournament finals, including the 2024 T20 World Cup title. In franchise cricket he captained Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles, the joint-most by any captain in the competition.
Highlights
- Only batter to score three double centuries in ODI cricket
- Captained Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles
- Led India to the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup title
- Holds the record for the highest individual score in a One Day International
Overview
What the figures show
Rohit Sharma's IPL record is one of the long ones — nineteen seasons between 2008 and 2026, 275 innings, 7,329 runs. The best of the seasons was 2013 — 538 runs, 49 more than the next-best campaign. No IPL innings has beaten the 109 scored in 2012. Fifty has been passed 51 times, two of those going on to hundreds. A strike rate of 132.9 is within a run or two of the 135.37 median for the 182 batters in this data with 300 or more IPL balls behind them. Fours and sixes account for roughly 63% of the total — 661 and 323 of them.
The clubs, in order: Sunrisers Hyderabad (2008–2010) and Mumbai Indians (2011–2026). Most of the runs, 6,159 of them, came in the Mumbai Indians years. His IPL bowling comes to 14 wickets in 276 deliveries at an economy rate of 7.37. That is a wicket every 20 balls.

Where these figures come from
Sources for this profile
- IPL figures computed from ball-by-ball records of 1,243 IPL matches.
- International figures computed from Cricsheet ball-by-ball data, used under the Open Data Commons Attribution License 1.0.
- Date of birth, playing style and photograph come from a third-party player feed, matched by name.
How the numbers are derived
- A wide is not a ball faced; a no ball is.
- Byes and leg byes are not charged to the bowler; wides and no balls are.
- Six kinds of dismissal are credited to a bowler. A run out is not one of them.
- An average is runs over dismissals, and is left blank rather than shown as infinite.
