Career

Shane Warne revived legspin as a frontline weapon at a time when it was considered a luxury. His first delivery in Ashes cricket, which pitched outside leg stump and hit the top of off to dismiss Mike Gatting in 1993, remains the most replayed ball in the game's history.

He combined enormous side spin with control usually associated with finger spinners, and used flight, drift and an aura of imminent invention to keep batters guessing. He captained Rajasthan Royals to the inaugural IPL title in 2008 with a squad rated the weakest in the competition.

Overview

What the figures show

57 IPL wickets, taken between 2008 and 2011, are the substance of Shane Warne's tournament record. He has also made 198 runs at 92.5, with 34 the best of them.

Every one of those seasons was played for Rajasthan Royals. That is a wicket every 21 balls. Set against the 102 bowlers here with 300 IPL balls or more, an economy rate of 7.27 is cheaper than their 8.17 median.

In the Big Bash there are 8 wickets from 11 matches for Melbourne Stars. As a bowler the leagues line up at 7.27 an over in the IPL and 7.26 in the Big Bash.

Shane Warne's Ashes bowling reads 195 wickets at 23.25, best figures of 8/71 in an innings and 12/246 in a match, with eleven five-wicket hauls among them.

How this page was worked out

Where these figures come from

Sources for this profile

  • IPL figures computed from ball-by-ball records of 1,243 IPL matches.
  • Big Bash figures computed from ball-by-ball records of men’s BBL matches.
  • Ashes figures compiled from published Test match records, not from ball-by-ball data.
  • International figures computed from Cricsheet ball-by-ball data, used under the Open Data Commons Attribution License 1.0.
  • Date of birth, playing style and photograph come from a third-party player feed, matched by name.

How the numbers are derived

  • A wide is not a ball faced; a no ball is.
  • Byes and leg byes are not charged to the bowler; wides and no balls are.
  • Six kinds of dismissal are credited to a bowler. A run out is not one of them.
  • An average is runs over dismissals, and is left blank rather than shown as infinite.

  • Ball-by-ball coverage of Test cricket begins in 2001 and of ODIs in 2002.
