Career
Sourav Ganguly scored a century on Test debut at Lord's and spent the next decade as one of the most effective left-handed openers in ODI cricket, forming a long-running partnership with Sachin Tendulkar at the top of India's order.
His driving through the off side was his most recognisable attribute, but his lasting influence came from captaincy. Taking over in 2000 in the aftermath of a match-fixing scandal, he rebuilt the side around younger players, insisted on a more confrontational posture abroad, and led India to a shared Test series in Australia and the 2003 World Cup final.
After retiring he moved into administration, serving as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
