IndyCar explained: how the series differs from Formula 1

How IndyCar works: one spec chassis with two engine makers, ovals and road courses in one season, the aeroscreen, push-to-pass and Indy 500 qualifying.

Thirty-three cars line up eleven rows deep at Indianapolis, and one of the drivers on that grid spent the previous Sunday afternoon watching a timing screen to find out whether he would be on it at all. No amount of money, history or contractual standing puts a car in that field. Four laps at an average speed, faster than somebody else's four laps, is the only currency accepted.

IndyCar explained through that scene is easier than explaining it through a rulebook, because almost everything unusual about the championship follows from a single decision: the series controls the car, not the teams. From that flows the small performance spread, the modest budgets, the willingness to race on ovals and road courses in the same season, and a qualifying system at its biggest event that treats the reigning champion exactly like a one-off entrant.

The comparison with Formula 1 is the useful frame, not because one is better, but because they solved the same problem in opposite directions. Formula 1 is a constructors' championship in which building a better car is the point. IndyCar removed that variable deliberately and built everything else around its absence.

The spec chassis, and the two engines that keep it from being a one-make series

Every car on an IndyCar grid is a Dallara. The current chassis, the IR-18, carries a universal bodywork kit introduced in 2018 whose styling deliberately recalls the American open-wheel cars of the 1990s and early 2000s, and whose engineering brief was to reduce downforce and to stop teams spending money on aerodynamic development. A replacement, the IR-28, has been announced and pushed back, with 2028 the current expectation after an earlier target slipped.

That is one half of the technical picture. The other half is that the engine is not spec. Two manufacturers supply the field, Honda and Chevrolet, each with a twin-turbocharged V6, and the output varies with the boost level the series prescribes for a given type of circuit, giving a broad range that has been estimated at somewhere between 550 and 750 horsepower depending on the setting.

This combination is the series' central design choice and it is a shrewd one. A pure one-make championship would be cheap and would have no manufacturer interest at all, because there would be nothing for an engine maker to win. Two suppliers competing on a fixed chassis preserves a genuine engineering contest, gives manufacturers a reason to invest and market their involvement, and still keeps the cost of entry within reach of a team that is not owned by a car company.

It also produces a specific competitive texture. Because the chassis is identical, an engine advantage shows up clearly in the results, and a team's choice of supplier becomes a meaningful part of its competitiveness. Nobody in IndyCar debates who has the best floor. They debate who has the better engine, and everything else comes down to setup and execution.

One championship, three kinds of circuit

The feature that has no equivalent anywhere else in top-level single-seater racing is that IndyCar counts ovals, permanent road courses and temporary street circuits towards the same title. A recent season ran seventeen races split across all three, with the road courses forming the largest group, the ovals the second and the street circuits the smallest.

Those are not variations on a theme. They are three different sports being scored as one.

An oval demands sustained high speed, minimal steering input, extreme aerodynamic stability and a car that will run inches from another car at full throttle for two hours. Downforce is trimmed away in pursuit of straight-line speed, and the consequence is a car that is genuinely difficult to control and unforgiving of a mistake. Traffic is not an obstacle to be cleared; it is the environment.

A road course demands the opposite. Heavy braking, low-speed traction, mechanical grip over kerbs, a car that will change direction quickly, and a driver working the steering constantly. A street circuit adds walls, poor surfaces and no run-off, which puts a premium on precision and makes track position enormously valuable.

The teams do not carry three different cars. They carry one chassis with different aerodynamic configurations, different suspension settings, different gear ratios and, in the case of the superspeedways, a fundamentally different set of assumptions. Firestone supplies compounds specified for each type of track. The setup problem is therefore far larger in range than a Formula 1 team's, even though the adjustment window on any given weekend is narrower, and the general principles behind that work are set out in the article on the setup choices available to a single-seater team.

The driver requirement is the real point. A champion has to be quick at Long Beach and at Indianapolis, which is a broader test than any other major single-seater championship asks for, and it is why drivers who arrive from Europe often need a full season before they are competitive on the ovals.

The aeroscreen, and why IndyCar needed a different answer

Open cockpits and oval speeds are a combination that has killed drivers, and IndyCar's response to the head protection problem took a different shape from Formula 1's.

Formula 1 adopted a titanium structure above the cockpit, arrived at after a long and public argument that is traced in the piece on how motor racing safety decisions actually get made. IndyCar introduced the aeroscreen from 2020: a frame of the same family combined with a reinforced, ballistic screen curving around the front of the cockpit, developed with Red Bull Advanced Technologies.

The reasoning behind the difference is worth understanding. A halo-type frame is excellent against a large object, a wheel or another car, arriving from above. It does considerably less against a small, fast object arriving on a flatter trajectory, which is the specific danger on an oval where debris travels at two hundred miles an hour and the following car is very close behind. A screen addresses that case directly.

The screen brought its own engineering problems. It added mass high on the car, which affects the centre of gravity, and it traps heat in a cockpit that was previously cooled by the airflow the driver sat in, which required dedicated ducting. Visibility in rain and in low sun had to be solved, and it took time. None of that was a reason not to fit it.

What the aeroscreen demonstrates is that a safety solution is specific to the accidents a series actually has. IndyCar and Formula 1 face overlapping but different risk profiles, and the different devices are the honest consequence of that rather than a disagreement about whether protection is desirable.

Push-to-pass, and the hybrid unit underneath it

IndyCar gives drivers a button that makes the car faster, and it is one of the more elegant pieces of rule-making in modern motorsport.

Push-to-pass delivers a boost of roughly sixty horsepower when a driver activates it. The allowance is finite and measured in time, with the total available set by the series for each event, and it drains while the button is held. That is the whole mechanism, and its consequences are surprisingly rich.

Because the resource is limited and shared between attack and defence, using it is a decision rather than a reflex. A driver who spends heavily chasing a rival for ten laps and fails to pass has less left when somebody attacks him later. A driver who is being caught must decide whether to spend now to hold position or save for the closing laps. Two drivers in a fight are effectively playing a resource game on top of the racing, and the timing screens show who has how much left.

The contrast with Formula 1's approach is instructive. The movable rear wing that Formula 1 used for years, and the active aerodynamics that replaced it, are granted conditionally: a car must be within a defined gap at a defined point before the advantage becomes available. IndyCar's boost is available whenever the driver chooses, subject only to his own remaining allowance. One system decides for the drivers when overtaking should be easier. The other hands them a budget and lets them spend it.

Beneath this sits the hybrid system introduced in 2024, comprising a motor, an inverter and an energy store that recovers energy under braking without changing the engine displacement. It added a further layer to how a driver manages energy around a lap, and, like everything else in the series, it arrived as a common specification rather than as something a team could develop an advantage in.

Road and street course qualifying: two groups, then six

IndyCar's qualifying on road and street courses is a knockout, and it is designed to produce a busy session rather than a tidy one.

The field is divided into two groups, each of which runs a timed segment on its own. The fastest six from each group advance. Those twelve cars then run a second segment together, and the fastest six from that contest a final short session for pole, known as the Firestone Fast Six. The pole award itself carries a sponsor's name and a championship point.

Two features of this differ meaningfully from the three-stage knockout used in Formula 1. The first is the group split, which introduces a genuine element of luck: two groups on a track that is improving lap by lap are not running in identical conditions, and a driver in the earlier group can be eliminated on a time that would have progressed comfortably from the later one. Drivers complain about it, and they are not wrong.

The second is the compressed timescale. Each segment is short, tyre allocations are tight and the track is busy, so finding clear air is a genuine skill rather than a formality. A quick driver caught in traffic on his one good set is out, and the field is close enough that the difference between the Fast Six and elimination in the first round is often a fraction of a second across the whole grid.

That closeness is the product of the spec chassis. A grid where the entire field is separated by a second is normal in IndyCar and would be extraordinary in Formula 1, and it changes what qualifying means. A poor lap does not cost a team three places, it costs eight.

Oval qualifying is a different exercise entirely

On an oval there is no point running cars together, because a slipstream would make the times meaningless. So cars run alone, against the clock, on a track they have to themselves.

The driver takes warm-up laps to build speed and bring temperature into the tyres, then runs a set number of timed laps at as close to full throttle as the car will allow. There is no braking to get right and no line to hunt for. There is a car trimmed of downforce for speed, a driver deciding how much of the throttle he can keep, and an engineer who set the car up hours earlier without knowing what the wind would be doing.

Wind is the hidden variable. A crosswind on one corner of an oval will unsettle a car set up on the assumption of still air, and it changes through an afternoon. Two drivers with identical machinery can post meaningfully different times because one ran in a lull.

That is qualifying at most ovals. At Indianapolis it becomes something else again.

The Indianapolis 500's four laps, and what they measure

Indianapolis qualifies over four laps, ten miles in total, and the qualifying speed is the average of all four. Two warm-up laps are permitted, and an official waves a green flag to begin the attempt.

Averaging four laps rather than taking the fastest is the whole design. A single lap can be produced by a car trimmed so aggressively that it would be undriveable for any length of time. Four consecutive laps cannot. The car has to hold its speed as the tyres go off and the fuel load drops and the balance shifts underneath the driver, and the run rewards a machine that is genuinely fast rather than one that is briefly fast.

It also makes the attempt an ordeal in a way one lap is not. A driver is committed for four laps at the limit with no ability to back out without losing the run, and the difference between the setup that qualifies well and the setup that puts the car into a wall is small. Watching a qualifying attempt at Indianapolis is watching a driver decide, several times, whether to lift.

The format spreads over two days. Saturday gives every entry at least one attempt. At the end of it, positions thirteen through thirty are locked in, the fastest twelve carry forward to Sunday, and anybody ranked thirty-first or lower has not made the race yet.

Sunday runs two separate sessions. The fastest twelve contest pole, with the session narrowing to a final six-car shootout for the front row and the pole award. And the cars outside the field go back out in Last Chance Qualifying, a window of seventy-five minutes in which to find the speed that puts them in the race.

Bump Day, and the one grid nobody is guaranteed

If more cars enter than the thirty-three the race accepts, somebody goes home. That is Bump Day, and it is the most brutal piece of sporting theatre in American motorsport precisely because it is indifferent to everything except speed.

The mechanism is simple. Every successful qualifying run displaces the slowest car currently in the field. A driver who has been safely inside the cut for an hour can watch a rival's four laps and be out of the race by the time the run ends, with time to go again and take somebody else's place. The order changes repeatedly, in public, with the crews watching a live board.

What makes it possible is a deliberate exemption in the series' own commercial arrangements. The charter system that guarantees chartered entries a start at other races does not extend to Indianapolis. Qualification for the 500 remains open, and no team, however established, has a guaranteed place in the field. A full-time entry with a championship-contending driver can miss the biggest race of the year, and it has happened.

Whether the field should be capped at thirty-three at all is a recurring argument. It is a number with a long history behind it rather than a technical necessity, and expanding it would remove the jeopardy that makes qualifying weekend an event in its own right. The series has consistently chosen to keep the constraint, on the reasonable ground that a race everyone is entitled to enter is a smaller thing than a race that has to be earned.

The points system, and the end of double points at Indianapolis

IndyCar's championship scoring is generous at the front and refuses to fall off a cliff at the back.

A win pays fifty. Second pays forty, third thirty-five and fourth thirty-two, so the gaps at the very top are large. From there the allocation drops in two-point steps down to twentieth place, and in single-point steps below that, which means a car finishing well outside the top ten still scores.

Bonus points are attached to specific achievements rather than to finishing position. Pole is worth one point at every event except Indianapolis. Leading a single lap of a race is worth one point. Leading the most laps in a race is worth two more. Those small awards have a real effect on how races are driven, because a driver out of contention for the win has a concrete reason to take the lead briefly during a pit sequence.

The most significant recent change was the removal of double points for the Indianapolis 500 from 2023. Under the old arrangement the 500 was worth two ordinary races, which meant a single result in May could effectively decide the championship, and a strong season could be undone by one afternoon at a circuit unlike any other on the calendar. Levelling it restored the principle that a title should reflect a full year across three types of racing rather than one race at one of them.

The design produces close championships. Because the field is compressed by the spec chassis and because the scoring rewards consistency, titles regularly go to the final round, and a driver can lead the standings without having won more races than anybody else.

Charters, the Leaders Circle and the economics of a smaller series

For most of its history IndyCar had no mechanism guaranteeing a team anything, which made a team's franchise worth very little and its future dependent on next year's sponsorship. That changed with a charter system introduced for 2025 and running through 2031.

Twenty-five charters were awarded among the teams that had competed full-time the previous season, with a maximum of three per team. A charter guarantees a starting position at every race outside Indianapolis, where the field is capped at twenty-seven cars, and creates something a team owner can value, borrow against and eventually sell. Chartered entries also compete for twenty-two Leaders Circle contracts, the programme that distributes guaranteed money to full-season entrants.

A new entrant arriving without charters has to race for the unchartered places, which is a meaningful barrier and a meaningful protection for incumbents at the same time. Whether that trade is healthy is exactly the argument that surrounds every franchise system in sport.

The financial scale underneath all of this is a different world from Formula 1. IndyCar publishes no budget figures and operates no cost cap, so precise comparisons are not available, but the structural reasons for the gap are plain enough. There is no car to design, no wind tunnel programme, no aerodynamic development race, no hundreds-strong engineering department and no continuous supply of new parts. A team's spending goes on people, travel, engine leases, tyres, and repairing crash damage.

That absence of a development arms race is the reason Formula 1 needed a spending limit imposed by regulation to achieve what IndyCar gets from the specification itself. Both series arrived at cost control. One legislated it, the other built it into the car.

What a smaller budget actually changes about the racing

The competitive effects of the spec model run deeper than the entry list.

Fields are compressed. A small team with a good engineer and a good driver can qualify at the front, and does, which is close to impossible in a constructors' championship where the gap between the best and worst cars is measured in seconds. Winners come from further down the pit lane, and a first-time victory is a realistic ambition rather than a fantasy.

Race outcomes swing on execution rather than machinery. Pit stops, strategy calls under caution, fuel saving and restarts decide races, because nobody has a car fast enough to make those things irrelevant. That places enormous weight on the crew, which is one reason the series scores and publicises pit stop performance as a competition of its own.

The driver market changes too. Without a dominant car to inherit, a reputation in IndyCar is built on results that are harder to dismiss, and a champion has demonstrably beaten equal equipment. The trade-off is real and should be stated. A spec series produces closer racing and forfeits technical spectacle. There is no equivalent of a team arriving with a radical concept and rewriting the season, no engineering story to follow across a winter, and no argument about whose interpretation of a regulation is legitimate. Why the driver market runs in both directions

Careers move between IndyCar and Formula 1 more freely than between most top-level championships, and the traffic goes both ways for reasons that follow from everything above.

Drivers arrive in IndyCar from the European ladder when the Formula 1 seat they were aiming at does not materialise. Because there are so few of those seats and because a great many capable drivers accumulate the licence credentials required for one, the surplus is substantial in any given year. A driver in that position finds a championship with competitive machinery available to a mid-grid team, roughly a season's worth of races, and no need to bring a budget on the scale a Formula 1 reserve role would demand.

They also find a genuinely difficult adjustment. The ovals are the obvious part, and the acclimatisation is slower than newcomers expect, because running at close quarters at superspeedway pace is a learned skill rather than a matter of bravery. The less obvious part is that the closeness of the field removes the margin a driver may be used to. A tenth of a second that would cost two places elsewhere costs six here, and a weekend where nothing quite works produces a result that looks like a collapse.

Movement in the other direction happens too, and the licensing table is the reason it is possible at all. Because the FIA rates an IndyCar championship at the same level as the second tier of the European ladder, a driver who wins in America holds the credential required to enter a grand prix. Whether a seat exists is a separate question and usually the binding one.

There is a third pattern, which is drivers who go to IndyCar and stay. A long career at the front of a spec championship, with a realistic chance of winning the Indianapolis 500, is a better proposition than a short one at the back of a constructors' championship, and enough drivers have concluded as much to make the choice unremarkable. That is not a judgement about which series is superior. It is a judgement about where a given driver can win, which is the only comparison that matters from inside a helmet.

What to watch during an IndyCar race

Watch the push-to-pass indicator if the broadcast shows it. A driver attacking with a large remaining allowance is in a completely different position from one attacking with almost nothing left, and the same overtaking attempt means different things depending on which it is.

Watch what happens at a caution. Because the field bunches up and a pit sequence under yellow costs far less time than one under green, cautions redistribute the race more violently in IndyCar than in most series, and a driver's position twenty laps from the end frequently has more to do with when he stopped than with how fast he has been.

Watch fuel saving. Drivers are routinely asked to hit a consumption target while defending a position, and the ones who can do it without losing lap time win races they had no business winning. It rarely looks like anything on television, which is why it goes unnoticed.

On an oval, watch how close a driver runs to the wall through the corner and whether that changes across a stint. A car that starts the run high and drifts down is losing grip, and the driver will be in traffic and vulnerable well before the timing screens make it obvious.

And at Indianapolis in May, watch the bubble rather than the pole battle. The pole run is the fastest four laps of the month. The bubble is somebody's season ending in real time, and it is the part of the weekend that explains what the series values most.
