F1 qualifying format explained: how the grid is set

How the F1 qualifying format works: the three-segment knockout, why the out-lap decides the lap, what parc ferme locks, and how grid penalties land.

Grid position is worth more in Formula 1 than in almost any other form of racing, and the reason is unflattering. These cars are very hard to overtake with. They are wide, they are fast enough that a braking zone lasts a couple of seconds, and every aerodynamic surface on them was designed for clean air that the car ahead has already ruined. A driver who starts third and is quicker than the car in second will often finish third.

So the session that sorts the grid is not a warm-up act, and the F1 qualifying format explained properly is worth more to a viewer than any amount of race analysis. It is the part of the weekend that decides most of the result before anyone has raced anybody.

The format itself repays the attention. It looks simple from the outside: three segments, slowest cars go home, fastest ten fight for pole. Underneath there is a tyre allocation with a mandated compound, a parc fermé boundary that ends setup work for the weekend, a queue at the pit exit that can cost a driver a lap they never got to drive, a grid formation procedure with its own tie-break logic, and an argument about red flags that resurfaces roughly twice a season.

The three-segment knockout, and what the 2026 rules changed

Qualifying is run as one session split into three periods, with a break between each. Under the 2026 Sporting Regulations, Article B2.4.2 sets it out like this. Q1 runs for eighteen minutes, then a seven-minute break, then Q2 for fifteen minutes, then another seven-minute break, then Q3 for thirteen minutes.

At the end of Q1 the slowest six cars are barred from the rest of the session. At the end of Q2, the same again. Ten cars go into Q3.

The elimination number is the piece that moved. For years it was five per segment, because the field was twenty cars. The 2026 regulations are written around a twenty-two car entry, and Article B2.5.1 makes the scaling explicit: with twenty cars eligible, five are eliminated after Q1 and Q2; with twenty-two, six; with twenty-four, seven, and so on upwards. The size of Q3 does not scale. Ten cars have contested the final segment since the format was introduced and ten still do, which means a larger grid makes Q3 harder to reach without making it any larger.

Q3 also gained a minute. It ran for twelve, and the seven-minute break after Q2 replaced an eight-minute one, so the whole session still fits inside the hour the broadcast has sold. That is a small change with a real effect, because a thirteen-minute Q3 with more cars in it is a different traffic problem from a twelve-minute one with fewer.

One detail trips up even attentive viewers. Lap times are deleted between segments. Article B2.4.2 says so twice, once after Q1 and once after Q2. Whatever a driver did in Q1 has no bearing on Q2 beyond the fact that it got them there. A car that topped Q1 by a margin starts Q2 with nothing banked. This is why a driver can look imperious for eighteen minutes and be eliminated at the next cut without anything having gone wrong except that they stopped improving while everyone else did not.

Each segment is a different problem, not the same problem three times

It is tempting to read the three periods as one long session with progressively better drivers. They are not. They ask for different things, and teams treat them differently.

Q1 is a survival exercise, and the currency is tyres. A front-running team wants to clear it on as few sets of the good tyre as possible, because every set used here is a set unavailable later. So the plan is usually one run, one lap, comfortably inside the cut, park it. The risk is that the plan assumes the track will not improve faster than expected. It usually improves faster than expected. A team that sends a car out early to bank a safe lap and then keeps it in the garage can watch that lap slide from tenth to seventeenth in the last ninety seconds without the car ever moving.

The counter-risk is the red flag. A driver who has not set a time when the session is stopped is exposed in a way that a driver with a mediocre lap on the board is not, which is why the cautious teams send a car out early even knowing the lap will be slow. Q1 strategy is essentially an insurance decision with a tyre-shaped premium.

Q2 is where the session is actually decided. Reaching Q3 is worth a great deal and the gap between the tenth and eleventh fastest cars is frequently trivial. It is also the segment where the field is most tightly bunched, because the slowest six are gone and the remaining sixteen include every team's realistic hopes. Q2 is the segment that produces the shocked radio silence.

Q3 is the only segment where nothing is held back. The tyre plan no longer needs protecting because there is nothing left to protect it for, the fuel load is at its lightest and the ten cars on track are the ten quickest. Most teams run twice, an early lap to bank a position and a final lap on fresh rubber at the last possible moment. Whether both runs happen depends on how many sets survived the first two segments, which is the thread that connects the whole hour back to a decision taken eighteen minutes in.

Timing a run matters as much as driving it

Here is the part that separates people who watch qualifying from people who understand it. The track is not a fixed object. It changes continuously through the session, always in the same direction, and the change is large enough to dominate small differences in driving.

Two things drive it. The first is rubber. Every car that passes lays a thin film of its tyre compound onto the racing line, and that film grips better than the bare surface underneath. The more cars, the more laps, the more rubber, the more grip. The second is fuel burn, since cars run progressively lighter as the session goes on, and lighter cars corner and accelerate better.

Both effects run one way, and neither reverses. Which is why qualifying has the rhythm it does. Cars go out early because they have to, then the pit lane empties for several minutes while everyone waits, and then in the final two or three minutes every car on track is on a timed lap at once.

That last-minute rush is not showmanship. It is the correct answer to a track that keeps getting quicker. The cost is that the correct answer is the same for everybody, so all twenty-two cars want the same piece of tarmac at the same moment.

There is a specific rule that makes the endgame work. Article B4.1.3 states that at the end of each period no driver may cross the Line more than once. In practice this means a driver who has crossed the timing line before the chequered flag is entitled to complete the lap they are on. It is why a lap that finishes forty seconds after the flag still counts, and why the final pole time is often set by a car that has technically been in a session that ended. Cross the line a moment late and the lap is worthless, however quick it turns out to be.

  1. Decide the release momentThe team weighs track evolution against traffic. Going out early means a worse surface but clear air. Going out last means the best surface and a queue in front of it, and a red flag ends the plan entirely.
  2. Leave the pit box into the queueCars leave in the order they are released and the pit exit becomes a rank. A car stuck behind three others has already lost its choice of gap and may run out of session before the lap begins.
  3. The out-lap, heating the tyresThe tyre has to reach its working temperature through the carcass and the surface, not just the surface. Too little and there is no grip. Too much and the tyre is past its peak before the lap starts.
  4. The out-lap, everything elseBrakes need temperature to bite, the power unit needs its energy store filled and its cooling managed, and the driver is doing this while also hunting for a gap. Most of the lap's outcome is decided here.
  5. Find space at the last cornerThe gap to the car ahead has to be large enough for the timed lap to run in clean air, and the gap behind has to be large enough that nobody arrives on the driver's gearbox in the first sector.
  6. The timed lapThree sectors at the limit, with energy deployment mapped to the circuit and the aerodynamic configuration switching to its low-drag state on every approved straight, which every car can now do.
  7. Cross the Line before the flagArticle B4.1.3 permits a driver to complete a lap they have already started when the session ends. Crossing the Line a fraction late makes the lap worthless whatever the time.
  8. Cool down and returnIf a second run is planned, the tyres and brakes have to be brought back to a state where they can be used again, which takes most of the time remaining.

The sequence a team runs for a single timed lap. Nothing here is optional; each stage exists because the previous stage left the car in the wrong state for the next one.

The out-lap is the lap that decides the lap

Ask a Formula 1 driver which lap of a qualifying run is hardest and a fair number will say the one before the fast one.

A qualifying tyre has a narrow window. Below its working temperature it does not generate its grip; above it, the surface degrades and the peak has already gone. The out-lap exists to put the tyre in that window and hold it there until the moment the driver crosses the timing line, which requires working the tyre hard enough to build heat without working it so hard that it is spent.

The complication is that the front and rear axles do not heat at the same rate, and neither does the surface of a tyre compared with its structure. Surface heat comes quickly and leaves quickly. Carcass temperature is slower to build and much slower to lose, and it is the one that determines how the tyre behaves through a long corner. A driver who builds surface temperature with a series of hard weaves and heavy brake applications may arrive at the timing line with a tyre that reads correctly on the sensors and is hollow underneath.

Brakes need managing in the same breath, because brake temperature feeds the wheel rim and therefore the tyre. Energy has to be managed too, so that the car arrives at the start of the lap with its deployment able to run the way the simulation intended.

All of this is happening while the driver watches mirrors, listens to a spotter calling out cars behind, and tries not to catch the queue in front. Nobody gets a clean out-lap in the closing minutes of Q3. The skill is deciding which part of the compromise to sacrifice.

The measurable consequence is that two identically quick drivers, in identical cars, will produce different lap times because one prepared the tyre better. That is a real performance differentiator, it is largely invisible on television, and it is one of the ways an experienced driver beats a quicker one.

Traffic, tows, and the queue at the pit exit

Everybody wants the same window, so the window is crowded, and the rules about crowding are looser than most viewers assume.

Article B4.1.1 says that a driver who unnecessarily impedes another during a lap-time classified session is liable to a penalty. It does not define impeding numerically. Interpretation sits with the stewards, informed by whatever guidance has been issued for the event, and it hinges on whether the impeded driver's lap was actually compromised and whether the impeding driver could reasonably have moved out of the way. The regulations also state plainly that no car may be driven unnecessarily slowly, which is the clause that catches a driver crawling round a corner trying to build a gap.

The result is a genuine tension. A driver on an out-lap has legitimate reasons to be slow: tyres, brakes, energy, gap-finding. A driver on a timed lap is entitled to a clear track. Both are following the rules and the rules cannot fully separate them, so the stewards spend a chunk of every Saturday evening deciding which was which.

The pit exit queue is the other half of the problem, and it is a queue in the strict sense. Cars leave in the order they are released, and once a car is in the line it cannot get out of it. Being fourth in the queue means arriving at the last corner with three cars in the way and no room to build a gap. In the final minute of Q1 it can mean the flag falling before the timed lap starts at all. Teams therefore release early to be at the front, which encourages everybody to release early, which recreates the queue further up the lap. It is a coordination failure with no obvious fix.

Then there is the tow. A car following another gains speed on a straight, because the leading car has moved the air and the follower meets less resistance. On a circuit with long straights, the gain from a well-timed tow can be larger than any setup change available to the team. Drivers therefore try to arrange one, sometimes by agreement between team mates, which is why a team will occasionally send both cars out together with one deliberately positioned ahead.

The catch is that the same disturbed air that reduces drag also reduces downforce, so a tow is a benefit in the straight parts of a lap and a penalty in the curved parts. On a circuit with long straights and few fast corners it is worth having. On a circuit built out of high-speed corners it is a trap, and the reasons why sit in the physics of how a following car loses front-end load in disturbed air.

The 2026 regulations changed the shape of this argument. The old movable rear wing was a permission that had to be earned by being within a set distance of a car ahead, and it applied only in the race, so its qualifying relevance was indirect. The 2026 cars use active aerodynamics instead, with the wings switching between a cornering configuration and a straight-line one, and that switch is available to every car on every approved straight rather than being granted to a chasing car as an overtaking aid. The separate energy boost for a following car, the feature that went through several names before the sport settled on plainer ones, is a racing device rather than a qualifying one. What that means for a qualifying lap is that low drag on the straights is no longer an advantage one car holds over another. It is a baseline everyone has. The tow still matters. The mechanism that used to sit alongside it, described in the piece on the rear wing flap that opened on designated straights, does not.

Qualifying trim is a different car, and parc fermé is why it stays that way

A Formula 1 car set up for one flat-out lap is not the same machine that starts the race, even though it is physically identical.

The differences are mostly about the trade between one lap and sixty. A qualifying configuration can afford wing angles that hurt on a long run, ride heights that would be reckless over a race distance, brake and energy deployment maps written for a single lap, and a tyre plan that gives no thought to what happens when the rubber is asked to do this eight more times. Everything that would be a liability across a race stint is free in qualifying, because there is no stint.

The reason a team cannot simply choose the qualifying configuration on Saturday and the race configuration on Sunday is parc fermé, and its timing is precise. Article B3.5.1 puts a car into parc fermé from the moment it leaves the pit lane for the first time during qualifying, and keeps it there until the start of the race. A car that never leaves the pit lane during qualifying enters parc fermé at the end of Q1 anyway.

From that moment, no part may be replaced or modified, and no change may be made to the setup or configuration of the car, other than a defined list of permitted work published as an appendix to the regulations. Each team must hand the Technical Delegate a suspension setup sheet for both cars before each of them leaves the pit lane for the first time in qualifying, which is how the baseline is recorded.

Breach the condition and the penalty is not a fine or a grid drop. The driver starts from the pit lane. That is a severe outcome in a sport where grid position is the whole point, and it is severe deliberately, because the alternative would be teams treating parc fermé as a cost of doing business.

So the setup that goes into qualifying is the setup that comes out of it, and the choice a team makes on Saturday afternoon is really a joint choice about two sessions with opposing requirements. A car trimmed for a spectacular single lap may be starting third and unable to hold the position. A car set up for the race may be starting eleventh, where being good in traffic will not help it, because it is the traffic. This is one of the genuinely interesting decisions in the sport, and the detail of what parc fermé does and does not permit is worth a piece of its own.

There is a narrow relief valve. Article B3.5.5 allows a team to request approval to fit replacement parts, and exceptionally, six times across the championship, that request may cover front wing, rear wing, rear bodywork or floor parts of a different design, provided the replacement specification has already been run in pre-season testing, a sprint qualifying, a qualifying or a race. It is a repair allowance with a hard limit, not a setup allowance.

Tyres, and the compound the rules now force you to use

The tyre allocation is written into the Sporting Regulations rather than left to the supplier, and knowing it makes the whole hour legible.

At a standard weekend, Article B6.2.4 gives each driver thirteen sets of dry tyres: two of the hard specification, three of the medium and eight of the soft. At a sprint weekend the total drops to twelve, distributed differently, with two hard, four medium and six soft. Five sets of intermediates and two sets of wets sit alongside, rising to six intermediates at a sprint weekend.

The soft allocation looks generous until you count what it has to cover: three practice sessions, three qualifying segments, and the sets that must be handed back at defined points before qualifying begins. Sets are returned progressively through the weekend under Article B6.3, which is why a team that burned two softs getting through Q1 arrives at Q3 with a problem it created on Friday.

The 2026 rules added something that changes Q3 specifically. Article B6.1.2 requires the FIA to tell teams, two weeks before each event, the mandatory dry-weather specification for Q3, and states that this specification is always the softest of the three made available for that competition.

That is worth pausing on. Q3 now has a mandated compound. A team cannot elect to run the medium in the final segment as a strategic gamble, and cannot save the soft for the race by declining to use it when it matters. Everyone contests pole on the same rubber. It removes a small amount of tactical freedom and a much larger amount of ambiguity from the comparison, since a Q3 order is now a comparison of cars and drivers on a defined compound rather than a comparison of cars, drivers and tyre choices at once.

The old rule that forced the top ten to start the race on their Q2 tyres is long gone, so the link between qualifying and Sunday now runs through inventory rather than through compulsion. What survives is the arithmetic of how many sets are left, which feeds directly into the decisions a team makes about stint length and compound on race day.

Sprint weekends run the same knockout, compressed

Several events on the calendar use the alternative format, and the qualifying picture doubles.

A sprint weekend has one practice session, then sprint qualifying, then the sprint itself, then grand prix qualifying, then the race. Sprint qualifying, set out in Article B2.2.2, is the same knockout in miniature: SQ1 for twelve minutes, a seven-minute break, SQ2 for ten minutes, another seven-minute break, SQ3 for eight minutes. Six cars are eliminated after SQ1 and six after SQ2, exactly as in the main session, and the same scaling with entry size applies.

The consequences of that structure are more interesting than the timings.

The first is that a team has one practice session to understand the circuit before a session that matters. Under the standard format, three practice sessions precede qualifying, which gives an hour and a half of running to correlate the simulation and fix the obvious errors. Under the alternative format that becomes a single session, and a team that arrives with the setup slightly wrong will have to live with it.

The second is that parc fermé bites twice, and earlier. Article B3.5.1 puts the car into parc fermé from the moment it first leaves the pit lane in sprint qualifying and holds it there until the start of the sprint. A second parc fermé period then runs from the car's first appearance in grand prix qualifying until the race. Between the sprint and grand prix qualifying there is a window in which setup can change, which exists precisely because a car locked into a Friday setup for an entire weekend would be a much bigger gamble than the format intends.

The third is that a sprint weekend has more sessions that can go badly, on fewer laps of preparation, and the results of two of them set two different grids. The full shape of how a sprint weekend is scheduled and scored sits alongside this one.

Grid penalties are applied to the classification, not to the session

This is the distinction most reporting gets wrong. Qualifying produces a classification. The grid is then built from that classification by a defined procedure. They are two different objects and the penalties act only on the second.

A driver who sets the fastest time in Q3 is the pole sitter in the results of the session, permanently, whatever penalties they are carrying. Take a ten-place grid penalty afterwards and the record still shows them as having qualified first.

Where do the penalties come from? Mostly from the power unit. Article B8.2 sets an allowance of each element per driver per championship, and Article B8.2.8 sets the tariff for exceeding it: the first time an additional element of a given type is used, a ten-place grid penalty; each subsequent time an additional element of that type is used, five places. Penalties are cumulative, so a driver taking several new elements at one event accumulates the sum. There are also penalties handed down by the stewards for driving infringements, applied to the race grid unless the infringement happened in sprint qualifying, in which case they apply to the sprint grid instead.

The formation procedure in Article B2.5.4 is worth reading closely, because it is not what most people assume. Positions are not simply shuffled down by the penalty count.

How the grid is built from the qualifying classification
  1. Start from an empty gridThe qualifying classification exists, but no grid position has been assigned to anybody yet. The grid is built from nothing rather than adjusted from the classification.
  2. Place the penalised drivers firstEach classified driver carrying fifteen or fewer unserved grid penalties from the previous twelve months takes a temporary position equal to their qualifying place plus the sum of those penalties.
  3. Break ties among the penalisedIf two penalised drivers land on the same temporary position, the slower qualifier keeps it and the faster ones are placed immediately ahead. Qualifying pace is the tie-break, not the size of the penalty.
  4. Fill the gaps with unpenalised driversDrivers with no penalty are then dropped into whatever positions remain empty, in the order of their qualifying classification. They do not move relative to one another.
  5. Close the grid upPenalised drivers holding temporary positions are then moved forward to fill any position still unoccupied. This is why a driver with a ten-place penalty often loses fewer than ten places in practice.
  6. Send the heavily penalised to the backA driver carrying more than fifteen unserved penalties in a twelve-month period starts behind every other classified driver, ordered among themselves by qualifying position.
  7. Unclassified drivers behind everyoneAny driver permitted to start despite being unclassified is placed behind the classified field, in the order defined by the classification rules.

The sequence set out in Article B2.5.4b of the 2026 Formula 1 Sporting Regulations. The order of the steps is what produces the outcomes that look odd on television.

Two consequences follow from that ordering, and both explain grids that look wrong.

A ten-place penalty does not reliably cost ten places. If several penalised drivers are bunched together, the close-up step pulls them all forward and the effective loss is smaller than the number suggests. Take a constructed example with invented round numbers. Suppose the drivers classified second, third and fourth all carry ten-place penalties and nobody else carries any. Each takes a temporary position ten places lower. The unpenalised drivers then fill the vacated slots in qualifying order. When the grid is closed up, the three penalised drivers land immediately behind the last unpenalised car rather than at the notional positions the arithmetic produced. Nobody has been let off. The grid simply has no gaps in it.

The second consequence is the fifteen-penalty cliff. A driver whose unserved penalties over the previous twelve months exceed fifteen is not placed by the arithmetic at all. They go behind everybody. That threshold is what stops a team stacking a very large number of penalties onto one weekend and finding that the closing-up procedure has quietly limited the damage, and the way penalty totals accumulate across a season deserves working through on its own.

Deleted laps, track limits, and the yellow flag that costs you the lap

A qualifying lap can disappear after the driver has driven it, and there are two main routes.

The first is track limits. The regulations define the track edge with unusual clarity. A driver has left the track if no part of the car remains in contact with it, the white lines defining the edges are part of the track, and the kerbs are not. A car with a single tyre touching the white line is on the track. A car entirely beyond the line is not.

That definition is objective enough to be automated in the parts of the circuit where it is monitored, and it is applied hardest at the corners where running wide is quick. A lap that gains time by putting all four wheels beyond the line is deleted, and deletion is more expensive in qualifying than in a race, because there may be no time left to replace the lap.

The complaint aimed at this rule is usually that it is pedantic. The defence is that the alternative is worse. Any threshold based on advantage gained requires a judgement per corner per lap, applied consistently across twenty-two cars inside a thirteen-minute segment, and that judgement is what the sport had before it moved to a bright-line test a computer can apply the same way every time. It is not the fair rule. It is the consistent one, and the way track limits are policed at circuits with different runoff shows how much of that consistency comes from the circuit rather than the rulebook.

The second route is flags. Article B1.8.3 requires a driver passing through a single waved yellow sector to reduce speed and be prepared to change direction, and states plainly that stewards expect to see earlier braking or a discernible reduction in speed. For a double waved yellow the requirement is stronger: reduce speed significantly, be prepared to change direction or stop, and it must be clear that no meaningful lap time was attempted. In sprint qualifying and qualifying the regulation goes further and simply deletes the lap of any driver who passes through a double waved yellow sector.

That deletion is automatic, and it is one of the fairest rules in the book. Without it, a driver has an incentive to weigh the value of a lap against the risk of a penalty at the exact moment a marshal may be standing on the circuit. With it, the lap is worthless regardless, so there is nothing to weigh.

Red flags, and the argument that will not go away

Stop the session and you create winners and losers who did nothing to earn either.

The mechanics are set out in Articles B4.1.2 and B4.3.1. When the Race Director stops a session, red flags are shown, the orange lights at the Line are illuminated, and every car must slow immediately and return to the pit lane, staying above a minimum time in each marshalling sector so that nobody treats the return as an opportunity. When the session resumes, the interrupted period is extended so the total track time is preserved. If the stoppage comes so late that the Race Director determines no car could leave the pit lane and start a timed lap before the period would have ended, the period may simply not be resumed.

That is a clean set of rules and it does not remove the unfairness, because it cannot.

A red flag shown while cars are on their final timed laps destroys those laps. It does not destroy laps already banked. So it rewards the drivers who went early, punishes the drivers who timed their run for the improving track, and does so on the basis of an incident neither group had anything to do with. Extending the period restores the clock. It does not restore the track evolution, the tyres already used, or the queue position.

There is a sharper version of the complaint, and it is the one that produces the annual argument. A driver who has already set a strong lap and then makes a mistake serious enough to bring out a red flag has, as a matter of arithmetic, prevented everyone behind them from beating it. The regulations empower the stewards to act where a driver is judged to have deliberately caused the stoppage. Intent is close to unprovable at these speeds, though, and the more common case is a genuine error whose consequences happen to fall in the offender's favour. There is no clean rule for that. There are only stewards, evidence, and a decision that a proportion of the paddock will disagree with.

The Race Director's discretion runs elsewhere in the session too. The regulations allow low grip conditions to be declared and then lifted, with the specific constraint that a return to normal grip conditions may only be declared during a qualifying period when more than five minutes remain. That constraint exists to stop the character of a session flipping in its final moments, which is a small and sensible piece of rule-writing that almost nobody notices.

Is a knockout the fairest way to order a grid?

Worth asking, because the sport has tried other things.

The case against the knockout is real. It rewards timing as much as speed, and timing is partly luck: the driver who happened to be released into a clear gap gets a better lap than the equally quick driver who caught a queue. It exposes cars to a red flag risk that varies with strategy rather than with pace. And it produces a result that mixes several distinguishable things, track evolution, traffic, tow, tyre state, into one number that then gets read as a pure measure of speed.

The alternatives all fail in a more interesting way.

A single flying lap per car, run one at a time, is the fairest comparison available and it is unwatchable. Every car gets a clean track and its own moment, the session lasts an hour, and most of that hour is an empty circuit. The sport ran a version of this and abandoned it, because a fair test nobody watches does not fund anything.

A fixed-length session where everyone runs freely and the fastest lap counts is closer to what qualifying used to be. It is a better test of outright pace and it has no drama, because the meaningful running happens at whatever moment each team chooses and there is no shared deadline.

Reversing the grid by championship order removes qualifying's purpose altogether and replaces a test of speed with a handicap, which is a defensible thing for a spectacle to do and an indefensible thing for a championship to do.

Which leaves the knockout, whose real virtue is not fairness. It is that it manufactures three deadlines instead of one and puts everybody on the circuit at the same time for each of them. It converts a time trial into something with a shape: an elimination, a survivor, and jeopardy that arrives on schedule. The unfairness it introduces, the traffic and the timing and the red flag lottery, is the price of that shape.

A sport this difficult to overtake in needs the session that sets the grid to be worth watching in its own right, because a large share of Sunday is being decided on Saturday whether anybody enjoys it or not. The knockout is not the most accurate way to measure a Formula 1 car over one lap. It is the most accurate way people will sit through, and the broader argument about how these rules trade purity for spectacle runs through most of the motorsport writing on this site.

What to watch during a qualifying hour

A handful of things tell you more than the timing screen does.

Watch when cars leave the garage in Q1. A team that sends a car out in the opening minutes is buying insurance against a red flag and spending a tyre to do it. A team that waits is backing its pace and accepting the risk. The choice tells you what the team thinks of its own car before a lap has been set.

Count the tyre sets, not the lap times. A front-runner that needed two runs to clear Q1 has fewer sets for Q3 than a rival that needed one. That difference frequently decides the front row without appearing anywhere on screen.

Watch the pit exit in the last ninety seconds. The order cars leave in is the order they will arrive at the last corner in, and a driver fourth in that queue is already compromised. Some of the laps that look scrappy were lost before the driver reached the timing line.

Watch the out-laps, not the flying laps. A driver weaving hard and braking heavily is building tyre temperature. A driver cruising is trying to build a gap. The two aims conflict, and how a driver resolves that conflict on the last out-lap of Q3 usually explains the lap that follows.

Note who is carrying penalties before the session starts. A driver taking a power unit penalty is running qualifying for a different purpose: not for grid position, which is already lost, but to understand the car and, occasionally, to hand a team mate a tow.

Watch the gap between tenth and eleventh in Q2. It is often the smallest meaningful gap of the weekend, and it separates the drivers who get a free run at pole from the drivers whose Saturday is over.

Wait for the stewards. The classification published at the flag is provisional. Impeding investigations, deleted laps and penalty applications are resolved afterwards, and Article B2.5.4c requires the provisional grid to be published no less than two hours before the scheduled start of the formation lap, with the final version an hour before. Anything earlier than that is a forecast.

How does F1 qualifying work?

Qualifying is a three-segment knockout run inside roughly one hour on the day before the race. Every car runs in Q1, the slowest six are eliminated, the survivors run again in Q2, the slowest six of those are eliminated, and the remaining ten contest Q3 for pole position. Lap times are wiped between segments, so each round starts from nothing.

How many cars are eliminated in Q1 and Q2?

Six in each, under the 2026 Sporting Regulations, which are written around a 22-car entry. Article B2.5.1 scales the number with the size of the field: five per segment if 20 cars are eligible, seven per segment if 24 are, and so on. The number of cars reaching Q3 stays at ten whatever the entry.

What is the 107 per cent rule in F1?

A driver eliminated in Q1 whose best Q1 lap is slower than 107 per cent of the fastest lap set in Q1 is recorded as unclassified rather than simply last. It does not apply if the track was declared wet, and the stewards may still allow the driver to start, taking into account practice pace, previous form and the reason for the deficit. It is a competence threshold, not an automatic exclusion.

Why do F1 drivers set their fastest lap at the end of the session?

Two effects push lap time down as the clock runs out. Rubber laid by every car makes the surface grippier, and fuel burned off makes each car lighter. Both improve continuously, so a lap started with a minute left is almost always quicker than the identical lap driven ten minutes earlier, which is why the pit lane empties and then refills in a rush.

Do grid penalties change the qualifying result?

No. Qualifying produces a classification, and penalties are then applied to that classification to build the grid. A driver who qualifies on pole and takes a ten-place power unit penalty is still recorded as the pole sitter in the session results, and starts lower down once the grid formation procedure has been run.
