F1 sprint race format explained, and how it has changed
The F1 sprint race format in full: the running order, sprint qualifying, the 100km distance, the points, and every revision made to it since 2021.

Most of a Formula 1 season runs to a rhythm the sport has kept for decades: practise on Friday, qualify on Saturday, race on Sunday. Six weekends a year break it. The F1 sprint race format compresses practice down to a single hour, adds a second competitive race, and produces two separate starting grids from two separate qualifying sessions inside seventy-two hours.
The current version works like this. Friday has one hour of free practice, then sprint qualifying. Saturday has the sprint, then grand prix qualifying. Sunday has the grand prix. Sprint qualifying decides where cars line up for the sprint, grand prix qualifying decides where they line up for the race, and the sprint result has no bearing on Sunday whatsoever.
That description has been accurate since 2024. It was not accurate in 2021, 2022 or 2023, and anyone reading an older explanation will find a different sport described with the same vocabulary. The format has been rebuilt three times, and each rebuild fixed something the previous version had got wrong.
Friday: one hour, then a session that counts
The regulations call a sprint weekend an Alternative Format Competition, and the first thing that changes is preparation.
A standard weekend gives each driver three hours of practice spread across two days: two one-hour sessions on Friday and a third on Saturday morning. An alternative format weekend gives one, and only one, lasting an hour. There is a provision allowing it to be extended to ninety minutes if the FIA, the commercial rights holder and a simple majority of teams agree no later than seven days before the event, but the default is sixty minutes.
Sprint qualifying then starts no less than two and a half hours and no more than three and a half hours after that session ends. So a team has one hour of running, a couple of hours of analysis, and then a session whose result is permanent.
The consequence is the least visible and most important thing about the whole format. Everything a team would normally learn across three sessions has to be extracted from one, and the choices it makes on the strength of that hour are then locked in. Correlation errors between the simulator and the real circuit, which are ordinarily found and fixed on Friday evening, arrive on a sprint weekend as a problem the driver has to drive around for two days.
Sprint qualifying: twelve minutes, ten minutes, eight minutes
Sprint qualifying is the same knockout structure as a grand prix qualifying hour, shortened at every stage.
SQ1 runs for twelve minutes with the whole field on track, and the slowest six cars are eliminated at the end of it. The lap times of the sixteen survivors are then deleted. After a seven-minute break, SQ2 runs for ten minutes and eliminates six more, and the ten remaining cars have their times deleted again. After another seven-minute break, SQ3 runs for eight minutes and orders the top ten.
Compare that with the main session, which allows eighteen minutes, fifteen minutes and thirteen minutes for the same three tasks. Sprint qualifying is roughly two thirds the length, and the compression bites unevenly. Eight minutes for SQ3 is barely enough for two runs at circuits with a long lap, which pushes teams towards a single decisive attempt and makes traffic management on the out-lap a genuine risk rather than an inconvenience.
The elimination numbers scale with the size of the field. The published procedure assumes twenty-two cars and eliminates six after each of the first two segments; with twenty cars entered it would be five, with twenty-four it would be seven.
Tyres are mandated rather than chosen. In SQ1 and SQ2 a driver may use up to one set per segment, and it must be a new set of the medium specification. In SQ3 it must be a set of the soft specification. That removes compound choice from the session entirely, which is a deliberate simplification: with only twelve sets of dry tyres available across the weekend instead of the thirteen a standard event allows, an open choice would have turned sprint qualifying into an inventory problem.
The sprint: a hundred kilometres and a one-hour ceiling
The sprint takes place on the second day of track running, and its distance is defined the same way a grand prix distance is: the least number of complete laps that exceeds a set figure. For the grand prix that figure is 305 kilometres. For the sprint it is 100.
In practice that lands somewhere between roughly fifteen and twenty-five laps depending on the circuit, which is close to a third of a race distance. Long enough for tyre behaviour to matter, short enough that a pit stop is not compulsory and rarely worth taking.
Two ceilings sit on top of the distance. If an hour elapses from the start signal before the scheduled laps are completed, the leader gets the end-of-session signal at the end of the following lap, provided that does not exceed the scheduled number. If the sprint is suspended, the suspension time is added to that hour up to a total maximum of ninety minutes. Where the formation lap starts behind the safety car, the ninety-minute clock begins when the green lights on the gantry come on, and the sprint distance itself is reduced by the number of safety car laps minus one.
Classification follows the same rule as the grand prix: a car that has covered less than ninety per cent of the winner's lap count, rounded down, is not classified.
There are no mandatory pit stops and no compound requirements in the sprint, which is the substantive difference from Sunday. A grand prix normally requires each driver to use at least two different dry specifications; the sprint requires nothing, so almost every car runs from lights to flag on one set. That makes it a much purer track-position race than a grand prix, and it removes almost all of the pit stop arithmetic that decides a grand prix.

Sprint points, and the threshold that has to be cleared
Points go to the top eight finishers on an 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale. Thirty-six points are distributed at each sprint, against a hundred and one at a grand prix, and they count towards both the drivers' and constructors' championships in exactly the same way as race points.
Ninth and below score nothing. There is no bonus of any kind attached to the sprint, and the winner of a sprint does not receive pole position, a trophy for pole, or any credit in the qualifying record.
Two conditions have to be met before anything is awarded. The leader must have completed at least two complete and consecutive laps without a safety car or virtual safety car intervention, and the leader must have completed at least half the scheduled sprint distance. Fall short of either and the sprint is scored as zero for everyone, whatever the classification says. Where the formation lap starts behind the safety car, the reduced distance is what the fifty per cent test is measured against.
That fifty per cent threshold is stricter than the equivalent for a grand prix, which has a sliding scale of reduced points below the full allocation. A sprint has no sliding scale. It either reaches half distance and pays out in full, or it does not and pays nothing. The full picture of how both scales work is set out in the explainer on the F1 points system.
How the sprint grid is built, and what happens if the session is lost
Sprint qualifying produces a classification. The grid is then assembled from that classification by a defined sequence, and the two are not the same object.
Unpenalised drivers take the positions their times earned. Drivers carrying grid penalties for the sprint are first given a temporary position equal to their classification plus the total of their unserved penalties, then the unpenalised drivers are slotted into the empty positions in order, and then the penalised drivers are moved forward to fill whatever gaps remain. Anyone who has accumulated more than fifteen unserved grid penalties in the previous twelve months starts behind every classified driver regardless.
Unclassified drivers go behind the whole field. A driver becomes unclassified by being knocked out in SQ1 with a best lap slower than 107 per cent of the fastest time in that segment, unless the track has been declared wet, or by failing to set a time at all, or by being disqualified from the session. Their relative order is taken from where they finished in the weekend's only practice session, which is one of the few places that hour has direct sporting consequences.
A provisional grid is published no later than two hours before the sprint's formation lap, and the final version an hour before. A team that knows its car cannot start must say so at least an hour and a quarter before the formation lap; the grid closes up for withdrawn cars, and any car pulled out after the provisional publication leaves its slot empty.
If sprint qualifying cannot be run at all, and the stewards accept that it cannot, the sprint grid is formed from the drivers' championship classification instead, with every driver treated as classified and the same penalty procedure applied on top. Should even that be impossible, the grid is entirely at the stewards' discretion. It is a fallback nobody expects to use, and its existence is the reason a washed-out Friday does not cancel a Saturday.
What thirty-six extra points do to a championship
The scale is small per event and not small across a season.
Six sprints at thirty-six points each puts two hundred and sixteen points into a championship that would not otherwise exist, which is a little over two grand prix wins' worth of margin available to a driver who is consistently good on Saturdays. Since the same points feed the constructors' table twice, once for each car, the effect on a close team fight is proportionally larger still.
The distribution matters as much as the total. A sprint pays eighth place one point, where a grand prix pays eighth place four. The gap between first and eighth in a sprint is seven points; in a grand prix it is twenty-one. So a sprint compresses the field relative to a race, which favours a consistent midfield team over a fast but erratic one, and gives a driver who qualifies eighth on Friday something real to protect.
The 2021 version put six points on the table per event and gave nothing at all to anyone outside the top three, which for most of the field made the sprint a risk with no upside attached. Widening it to eight scorers was the single most effective change the format has had, because it turned the sprint from something to survive into something to contest for two thirds of the grid.
2021: the trial that was called sprint qualifying
The original version ran at three events and was named, accurately for what it then was, sprint qualifying.
The Friday of a 2021 sprint weekend had one practice session followed by a conventional three-part qualifying hour, run on soft tyres only. That session set the grid for Saturday's sprint. The sprint, over the same hundred-kilometre distance used today, then set the grid for the grand prix. Points went to the first three finishers on a 3-2-1 basis, and the sprint winner was credited with pole position for the weekend.
The internal logic was coherent. If the sprint decides the grid, the sprint is a qualifying session, so its winner is the pole sitter and the trophy follows the grid slot. It also produced the format's central problem in its purest form. Because the sprint determined Sunday's starting order, a driver who had qualified well on Friday had everything to lose on Saturday and very little to gain. The rational approach for a front-row car was to hold position, avoid contact, and protect a grid slot already earned.
A format designed to add racing had built in a reason not to race.
2022: eight scorers, and pole handed back to Friday
The second season kept the structure and changed two things.
The name went first. Sprint qualifying became simply the sprint, an admission that calling a race a qualifying session had never sat well even while the sprint result was still forming the grid.
The scoring went from three drivers to eight, on the 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale still in use. Tripling the number of scorers and raising the winner's haul from three points to eight was a direct attempt at the incentive problem: give the midfield something concrete to fight for on Saturday, and a driver in seventh has a reason to attack sixth rather than settle.
The third change was to pole position. From 2022 the driver who set the fastest time in qualifying was credited as the official pole sitter, whatever happened in the sprint, while the sprint winner kept the right to start the grand prix from the first grid slot. The record and the grid were separated. It sounds like bookkeeping and it was not: it restored the meaning of a statistic the sport has kept since 1950, and it removed the odd situation in which a driver could be credited with pole for winning a twenty-lap race.
The sprint still set the grid, though, so the underlying disincentive survived the season intact.
2023: the sprint stops setting the grid
The third version made the change that defines the format today, and it arrived mid-season, approved days before the event where it first ran.
The sprint became standalone. Its result no longer formed the grid for the grand prix. Friday now ran one practice session followed by grand prix qualifying, which set Sunday's grid; Saturday ran a new session called the sprint shootout, which set the sprint grid, followed by the sprint itself. The number of sprint events doubled from three to six.
This is the decision that made the sprint a race rather than a hedge. Once Sunday's grid was settled on Friday, nothing a driver could lose in the sprint carried over into the grand prix beyond damage to the car. A front-runner who threw away three positions on Saturday still started the grand prix where he had qualified. The reason to drive conservatively evaporated.
The sprint shootout was the compressed knockout described earlier, and its tyre rules caused an immediate problem. The original requirement was for new tyres in every segment, which collided with an allocation that had not been increased to match. The rule was relaxed during the season to permit any set of softs, new or used, in the final segment.
What 2023 did not fix was the shape of the weekend. Two qualifying sessions of different kinds now sat on different days with a race between them, and the running order confused people who had followed the sport for decades.
2024: sprint qualifying moves to Friday, and the weekend splits cleanly
The fourth version rearranged the sessions without changing any of them, and produced the format still in use.
The sprint shootout was renamed sprint qualifying and moved to Friday afternoon, immediately after the weekend's only practice session. The sprint moved to Saturday morning, and grand prix qualifying moved to Saturday afternoon. Sunday was untouched.
The reordering does two useful things. It puts each qualifying session on the same day as, or immediately before, the event it decides, so the causal chain reads left to right. And it groups the sprint with the session that sets its grid, which separates the sprint half of the weekend from the grand prix half rather than interleaving them.
The second change was to parc fermé, and it is the more consequential of the two. Rather than one unbroken lock from Friday to Sunday, the weekend now has two. The first runs from the start of sprint qualifying to the start of the sprint. The second runs from the start of grand prix qualifying to the start of the race. In between there is an open window in which teams may change setup freely, and grand prix qualifying is scheduled to begin between three and four hours after the sprint ends specifically to make room for it.
Nothing was changed for 2025, and the format carried into 2026 unaltered, with six sprint events on a calendar of up to twenty-four.
The gap between the sprint and qualifying is the strategic heart of it
Under the old arrangement a team committed to one configuration on Friday afternoon and raced it on Sunday, having learned about the circuit in a single hour. That was a genuinely poor deal. An hour of practice produces a setup built on assumptions, and the format then forbade correcting them for two days.
The current arrangement converts the sprint into the most valuable practice session on the calendar. A hundred kilometres of racing at full commitment, on a set of tyres nobody is nursing, in traffic, tells a team more about its car than any practice run does. The regulations then let it act on what it learned.
So the sprint is now doing two jobs at once. It is a race worth thirty-six points, and it is the data-gathering session the format took away. A team that finishes the sprint with a clear picture of its long-run balance goes into grand prix qualifying with a genuine advantage over one that spent twenty laps stuck behind a slower car and learned nothing. What stays the same, and what a sprint weekend costs
Several things are identical across both formats and are worth stating, because the differences get all the attention.
Grand prix qualifying is unchanged: eighteen, fifteen and thirteen minutes, six eliminated after each of the first two segments, the same classification rules and the same 107 per cent test in the first segment. The grand prix itself is unchanged in distance, duration and regulation. Grid penalties are applied to each grid separately, which means a driver can carry a penalty into the sprint, into the race, or into both, following the same procedure described in how F1 grid penalties are applied. Safety car and virtual safety car procedures apply to the sprint exactly as they do to a race.
The costs are real and mostly borne by the teams. A sprint weekend is a second race distance of wear on a power unit allocation that has to last a season, a second start with everything a start can do to a clutch and a gearbox, and a second opportunity for contact on a car built from components that are rationed. Crash damage on a Saturday morning has to be repaired in time for a qualifying session three hours later, using parts that count against a cost cap.
The tyre allocation reflects the compression. A sprint weekend gives each driver twelve sets of dry tyres against thirteen at a standard event, distributed differently, with mandatory returns after practice, after the sprint and before qualifying that steadily reduce what is available. A driver who used a set in the sprint must return the one with the most laps on it.

Why a hundred kilometres, and what the fuel load does to it
The distance was not arrived at by accident, and understanding it explains why a sprint feels different rather than merely shorter.
A hundred kilometres is roughly a third of a grand prix, which is long enough for a set of tyres to lose meaningful performance and short enough that stopping to replace them costs more than it recovers. That single property produces the racing: with no stop available as a solution, a driver who has hurt his tyres in the opening laps has to live with the consequence in front of a car that did not.
The fuel load does the rest. Refuelling has been banned since 2010, so every car starts a grand prix carrying enough fuel for the full distance, and a sprint car carries roughly a third of that. It is a materially lighter machine, and lighter cars brake later, change direction faster and are gentler on their tyres. The lap times a sprint produces are therefore not comparable with Sunday's, and neither is the handling balance a driver reports.
That is the one honest caveat on treating the sprint as a practice session. It tells a team a great deal about aerodynamic balance, brake temperature, cooling and racing in traffic, and considerably less about what the car will do on lap three of a grand prix with a full tank in it. A team reading its Saturday morning data has to translate rather than transcribe, and translating fuel effects is one of the older and better understood problems in the paddock. It is also why a sprint result is a weak predictor of a grand prix result even when nothing goes wrong for anybody.
Is the sprint good for the sport?
The case for it is straightforward. It puts something competitive on all three days, it gives points to teams that would otherwise leave a weekend with nothing, and it produces a genuine race in a format short enough that nobody manages tyres for forty laps.
The case against has two parts, and only one of them is aesthetic.
The aesthetic objection is that a grand prix should be the singular event of a weekend, and that adding a second race dilutes it. That is a matter of taste and has been argued in circles since 2021.
The structural objection is sharper. Cutting practice from three hours to one increases the influence of preparation done away from the circuit, which favours teams with better simulation tools and deeper resources. A format sold as increasing unpredictability may, on this reading, do the opposite: it reduces the amount of real-world running available to fix a car that arrived wrong, and a team that arrived right is rewarded twice.
The counter is that the current running order softens exactly that, because the sprint itself is now a session teams can learn from and act on. Whether the softening is enough is an open question, and the six-event ceiling suggests the sport has not fully decided either.
What to watch across a sprint weekend
Watch the first practice hour for run plans, not lap times. With only sixty minutes available, teams split the session between short-run and long-run work, and the choice tells you what each one thinks it does not yet know.
Treat sprint qualifying as a tyre problem as much as a lap time problem. Mandated compounds and an eight-minute final segment mean the driver who gets his one lap right beats the driver who was quicker in practice.
Watch the first two corners of the sprint. With no mandatory stop and a short distance, the start and the opening exchanges decide most sprints outright, and DRS becomes the primary passing tool from there. How the flap and the detection zones work is covered in the explainer on DRS.
Look for setup changes between the sprint and qualifying. A team that emerges from the open window with a visibly different wing level has told you what it learned on Saturday morning, and that is often the best available guide to Sunday.
Do not read the sprint result as a grid preview. It has not set the grand prix grid since 2023, and a driver who finished the sprint eleventh may qualify third three hours later.
The sprint is the one part of a modern Formula 1 weekend that has been rebuilt in public, repeatedly, in front of an audience that watched each version fail in a different way. That is unusual for a sport with as much institutional caution as this one, and the current format is the better for it. The top eight finishers score, on an 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, which is thirty-six points shared out at each sprint. Nothing is awarded below eighth place and there is no bonus point of any kind. Points only count if the leader has completed at least half the scheduled sprint distance.
Does the F1 sprint set the grid for the grand prix?
