Powerplay batting in T20: intent, matchups and risk

How T20 sides bat the first six overs: setting intent, attacking the new ball, arranging matchups, budgeting risk and recovering from an early wicket.

The bowler is at the top of his mark, the ball is four deliveries old, and there are two fielders between the batter and about two thirds of the rope. That picture is the entire argument for how powerplay batting in T20 should work, and most sides still spend the first two overs behaving as though it were not there. The opening block of a twenty-over innings is not a warm-up that leads to the scoring. It is the cheapest scoring in the match, and a batting side gets thirty-six deliveries of it.

The correct approach follows from one asymmetry. During the restriction, a good shot that clears the infield is very likely to reach the boundary, because almost nobody is out there to stop it. After the restriction, the identical shot is fielded. Nothing about the bat, the bowler or the pitch has changed. What has changed is the number of people standing in the places the ball travels through, and a batting plan that ignores that is leaving runs on the table it will never get back.

The powerplay asks a different question of a batter

Batting in the middle overs is a question of finding gaps. Batting in the last four is a question of clearing the rope under pressure. Batting the first six is neither, and treating it as an easier version of either is where most opening pairs go wrong.

The question the restriction asks is narrower: which deliveries in this over can I hit hard and straight enough to beat the ring, and am I prepared to be wrong. Not "where is the gap", because the gaps are enormous. Not "can I clear the fielder", because for most of the field there is no fielder. Just whether the ball is hittable and whether the batter will commit.

That reframing matters because it changes what counts as a mistake. A batter who plays out a good over from a bowler swinging it both ways has not failed. A batter who leaves three hittable balls in the same over because he has decided he needs ten deliveries to find his rhythm has, and the failure is invisible on the scorecard, which will record only that he was undefeated at the end of the sixth.

The pair also has more information than they usually use. They know exactly how many deliveries the phase contains. They know the field cannot be reinforced. They know the bowlers available, because a captain has at most two or three genuine new-ball options and will use them in a predictable order. Almost everything about the phase is knowable in advance, which makes it the most plannable passage in the format.

Intent is a plan, not a mood

"Intent" has been used so loosely that it has come to mean something like enthusiasm. It is not a temperament. It is a set of decisions taken before the innings, and a side that cannot write theirs down does not have one.

A real powerplay plan names four things.

Which bowlers are the targets. Not all of them. A side facing a genuinely difficult new-ball bowler and a filler at the other end should decide, in the dressing room, that the filler is where the phase is won. That decision then drives everything else, including who takes a single off the fourth ball.

Which areas each batter is hitting into. A batter with a strong straight game and a weak pull is a different weapon from one who scores square of the wicket, and the field the captain has set will suit one of them more than the other. The pair should know which two sectors they are attacking before they walk out.

How many deliveries each batter gets to assess. Two, four, six. The number should be small, explicit and different for each batter according to role, and once it is spent the batter is on the plan whether he feels ready or not.

What happens when a wicket falls. The plan that only works while both openers are in is not a plan, because the most likely disruption in the phase is a dismissal.

Written like that, intent stops being an attitude and becomes an instruction that can be reviewed afterwards. A side can ask whether the plan was right and whether it was followed, and those are separate questions with separate fixes.

Attacking the new ball, and what makes it attackable

The new ball is hard, it comes on to the bat, and it goes further off the middle than a soft one does. That is the whole case for attacking it, and it is a real case, not a slogan.

A hard ball transmits more of the bat's energy back into the shot. A batter who middles a drive in the second over will see it travel further than the same shot in the fourteenth, purely as a function of the ball's condition. In a phase where the outfield is unguarded, extra carry is worth a great deal, because the difference between a shot stopped at the edge of the ring and one that reaches the rope is the whole of the scoring.

The counterweight is movement. A new ball swings and seams more than an old one, and that is exactly what makes attacking it risky rather than free. The practical resolution is a question about degree: how much is it doing, and is the movement happening early enough that the batter can read it, or late enough that he cannot.

This is why the first two overs are worth watching with attention even in a side committed to attacking. A pair is not being timid by playing carefully at a ball that is hooping. They are gathering the one piece of information the plan cannot supply in advance, and the surface itself is a large part of it. Hitting through the line, and when it stops working

Hitting through the line means swinging straight down the path the ball is travelling on, and accepting that a small amount of lateral movement will not be enough to beat the middle of the bat. It is the highest-value option in the powerplay and it is also the one most often played in the wrong conditions.

It works when three things hold. The ball is coming on at pace, so the batter does not have to generate power himself. The movement is modest, so the margin for error is a few centimetres rather than the width of the bat. And the bounce is predictable, so the shot can be played with the head still and the swing full.

Take any one of those away and the shot changes character. On a slow pitch, the ball arrives without pace and a full swing through the line produces a mishit that goes straight up, because the batter has had to supply the speed and has done so early. Against real swing, the line the batter committed to is not the line the ball finishes on, and the edge is the most likely contact. On uneven bounce, the vertical margin disappears.

The batting alternative is to play across the line into a sector the field has left open, which trades one risk for another. Playing across the ball's path means the bat is only in the correct place for a narrow window of time, which is the classic route to an lbw or a leading edge, but it does not require the ball to behave. On a pitch doing something, a good T20 batter will often stop trying to hit straight and start working the ball square, taking a lower ceiling in exchange for a much wider margin.

The tell is worth learning. A batter who has abandoned straight hitting in the third over and started sweeping and cutting has made a judgement about the surface, and that judgement is usually more reliable than anything said in commentary.

Matchups: arranging who faces whom

The most underrated skill in powerplay batting is not hitting. It is arranging the strike.

A batting pair has a limited amount of control over which bowler each of them faces, and it is exercised through singles. Take one off the fifth ball and the other batter faces the sixth and then the whole of the next over. Refuse the single and you keep strike. Take two and nothing changes. Every one of those is a decision, and good pairs make it deliberately.

What they are arranging is a matchup, which has four inputs.

Hand and angle. A left-hander facing a right-arm bowler over the wicket is receiving the ball on a different angle from a right-hander facing the same delivery, and the field set for one is wrong for the other. A left-right pair therefore forces field adjustments every time the strike rotates, which costs the fielding side time and occasionally costs it a fielder in the wrong place.

Type of bowling. Pace on the ball is a gift to a batter who plays late and a problem for one who premeditates. A bowler taking pace off is the reverse. Pairs know which of them is better against which, and will spend a delivery to get the right man facing.

Scoring areas against the current field. With only two fielders out, the captain has protected two sectors and abandoned the rest. If the abandoned sectors happen to be a particular batter's strengths, that batter should be facing as much as possible while that field is set.

Who is set. A batter twelve deliveries in is worth more than one who has faced two, and the strike should generally flow towards him during the restriction, which is the opposite of the convention that a new batter should be given the strike to get in.

The catch is that the fielding captain is doing the same arithmetic in reverse, and can respond by changing ends, changing the angle round the wicket, or bowling wide of off stump to deny a single. That contest, conducted entirely through the placement of ones, is most of what is actually happening in a powerplay that looks quiet.

The risk budget, counted in deliveries rather than wickets

The usual way of talking about powerplay risk is in wickets: how many can we afford to lose. That framing is not wrong but it hides the thing that actually goes missing, which is deliveries.

Count it the other way. The phase contains thirty-six balls. Every ball that produces nothing is a ball spent, and unlike a wicket it cannot be recovered by anybody batting well later. A side that loses two wickets while scoring quickly has spent wickets it has eight more of. A side that keeps all ten while playing out fifteen dot balls has spent something it has none more of, because the restriction expires on a timer and the timer does not care what the scoreboard says.

That is the budget worth managing. Not "how many wickets can we lose" but "how many of these thirty-six deliveries are we prepared to give away". A pair that has decided in advance that eight is the ceiling will play the fifth ball of a tight over differently from one that has never counted.

There is a floor to the aggression and it deserves stating clearly rather than being left implied. Three down inside the phase and the calculation changes, because a T20 side that loses its recognised batting cannot use its overs at all, and being bowled out with deliveries unused is the one outcome no amount of hitting recovers from. Aggression in the restriction is aggression by a side that still has batting behind it. It is not a licence that survives a collapse.

The other qualifier is the pitch. On a surface where scoring is genuinely hard, the whole match total moves down and the delivery budget tightens with it, because a par score reached at six an over does not need the same number of committed shots as one reached at nine. Reading the surface accurately before setting the budget is the difference between calculated aggression and thrashing.

The anchor opener, and the honest case for one

The anchor has become an insult, which is lazy. There is a real version of the role and a fake one, and separating them is more useful than dismissing both.

The real version: one batter takes responsibility for facing the better bowler and for surviving whatever the new ball is doing, while the other attacks the weaker end. The anchor's job is not to score slowly. It is to make sure the side is not two down in the third over, and to do it while still hitting the deliveries that are there to be hit. Crucially, the role is temporary. Once the ball softens and the field spreads, the anchor is expected to be the set batter who accelerates, and the runs he did not score in overs two and three come back in overs nine to fourteen.

The fake version: a batter who bats slowly in the powerplay, slowly in the middle, and gets out in the sixteenth having faced a third of the innings for a modest return. That is not anchoring. That is a side subsidising one player's method with everybody else's deliveries.

The test between them is simple and it is not the powerplay score. It is what the anchor does between overs seven and fifteen. If his rate goes up sharply once the field spreads, the early caution bought something. If it does not, the caution was the whole of his game and the side was always going to be short.

Sides have quietly resolved this in a third way, which is to keep an anchor in the eleven but not at the top. A batter who plays that method is often more valuable at three or four, arriving after the restriction, where the field is spread and accumulation is what the phase rewards anyway. The attacking opener, and what he is actually being paid for

The opposite role is also misunderstood, usually by the people who criticise it.

An attacking opener is not being asked to score consistently. He is being asked to score at a very high rate when he comes off, and to be dismissed cheaply when he does not, and the second half of that sentence is not a defect in the plan. It is the plan. A batter who converts one innings in three into a rapid start and fails in the other two has done his job, provided the failures are quick and the side is built to absorb them.

This is why judging such a player by average is close to meaningless and why the relationship between the two headline numbers matters so much, a distinction unpacked in the comparison of batting average and strike rate. The relevant question is not how often he succeeds, it is what the successful version is worth and whether the side can carry the failures.

Carrying them requires two things. Depth, so that a wicket in the second over is not a crisis. And commitment, because a side that picks an attacking opener and then asks him to be careful after two early failures has bought a specialist and instructed him to be a generalist, which produces the worst of both.

The pairing question follows. An opening partnership of two identical aggressors is high variance in both directions and can produce the fastest starts in the format and the fastest collapses. Two accumulators is a slow phase with a predictable ceiling. Most sides therefore pair one of each, which also gives the strike-rotation game something to aim at. What a side does after an early wicket

An opener is caught behind in the second over. This is the moment that separates sides with a plan from sides with an attitude, and the wrong response is extremely common.

The wrong response is to declare the phase over. The new batter takes eight deliveries to get in, the surviving opener decides he must now bat responsibly, and the side emerges from the sixth over having lost one wicket and also having lost the phase, which is far more expensive than the wicket was.

The right response starts from a fact about the rules: the restriction is on a clock and the clock does not stop for a dismissal. Whatever the incoming batter needs, he is spending it out of a fixed and rapidly shrinking allocation, so the cost of a long settling period is much higher here than it would be in the ninth over.

Three practical adjustments follow.

The set batter takes more of the strike, not less. The convention of giving a new batter the strike to get him in is a red-ball habit. During the restriction it is close to backwards, because the batter who already knows what the ball is doing should be facing the deliveries where the field is emptiest.

The incoming batter's assessment window shrinks. If the plan allowed four deliveries at the start, a batter walking in during the fourth over gets two. That is uncomfortable and it is the correct trade.

The plan does not change, only who executes it. The target bowler is still the target bowler. The abandoned sectors are still abandoned. Rewriting the whole approach because of one dismissal treats a normal event as an emergency.

The genuine emergency is different and worth naming so it is not confused with the above. Two down in the first three overs, against a ball that is moving and a pitch offering something, is a position where the side's realistic ceiling has already dropped and the correct move is to bat towards a smaller total rather than towards the one that was planned. The distinction is between one wicket, which is a normal cost of doing business, and a collapse in progress, which is not.

Two ways a good powerplay is thrown away later

A phase does not exist on its own, and two failures immediately after it undo most of what it produced.

The first is the batter who cannot change gear. A player who has spent six overs swinging at everything and continues to swing at everything in the eighth is not being consistent, he is failing to notice that the conditions of the problem have changed. The shot that cleared an empty midwicket is now going to a fielder standing there, and the sensible response is to lower the ceiling and start working the ball. Sides lose more from this than from any single dismissal in the restriction, because it typically costs two or three wickets in the space of four overs and turns a strong position into a rebuild.

The second is the opposite error, made by the side rather than the batter. A pair that has taken the phase apart creates an expectation, and a dressing room that starts protecting the position rather than extending it turns a good start into a mediocre total. The runs banked in the first six overs are not a lead. They are a head start on a total that still has fourteen overs to build, and the correct use of them is to make the middle overs less desperate, not to make them cautious.

Both errors come from treating the powerplay score as a result rather than as an input. It is an input. What it buys is a wider set of options between overs seven and fifteen, and a side that does not spend those options has converted an advantage into a number on a graphic.

Setting a total against chasing one

The restriction is identical in both innings and the batting problem is not.

Chasing, the side knows the number. The powerplay can be planned backwards from it, the required rate is a fact rather than a guess, and the risk taken in the first six overs is measurable against a known target. That certainty usually justifies more aggression, not less, because the runs taken cheaply here are runs that do not have to be manufactured against a spread field later. Batting first, the side is guessing at what will be enough, and human beings guess conservatively. The observable consequence is that sides frequently bat the first six overs of a first innings more carefully than they would bat the same six overs chasing the total they end up setting, which is not a rational position. The conditions are the same, the field is the same, the ball is the same. The only difference is that one side has a number and the other has an estimate.

The practical correction is to have the estimate before the toss rather than forming it during the innings. A side that has decided in the dressing room what a good total looks like on this ground and this surface can bat the restriction to that figure. A side that is waiting to see how the innings goes will always shade towards caution, because caution feels responsible when the target is unknown.

Selection, and building a side that can bat this phase

A powerplay plan constrains selection more than most sides admit.

An opening pair capable of attacking a moving new ball is a specific and fairly rare combination of skills, and picking one usually means accepting weaknesses elsewhere. The depth needed to absorb early failures means batting somebody at seven who can genuinely bat, which usually means an all-rounder, and the availability of that player shapes the whole eleven.

Sides that get the phase consistently right tend to share three features. They pick at least one opener whose method does not depend on getting set. They bat deep enough that two early wickets do not force a rebuild. And they are willing to leave out a higher-averaging batter whose method makes the first six overs slower, on the grounds that the phase is worth more than the average.

What to watch in the first six overs

Four habits will tell you more about a powerplay than the score at the end of it.

Count the dot balls, not the boundaries. Boundaries are loud and partly luck. Dots are the resource being consumed, and a pair that has played out twelve of them in four overs is in trouble whatever the run rate looks like.

Watch who takes the single off the fourth and fifth balls. Strike arrangement is the clearest evidence that a pair has a plan. A pair rotating at random is batting on instinct.

Note when a batter stops hitting straight. A switch from driving to cutting and pulling is a verdict on the pitch, delivered by the person best placed to give one.

Watch the response to the first bowling change. A captain replaces a bowler who has been attacked. Whether the batting pair has an answer ready, or spends two overs working out who the new man is, is usually the difference between a good phase and an average one.

How should a batter approach the powerplay in T20 cricket?

With a plan agreed before the innings that names which bowlers will be attacked, which areas are the primary scoring options and how many deliveries the pair is prepared to spend getting in. The opening six overs are the only part of the innings where the outfield is nearly empty, so a batter should be looking to hit rather than waiting for a bad ball. The plan should be specific enough to survive a wicket falling.

Should a T20 side keep an anchor at the top of the order?

An anchor is defensible if the role means batting through against a moving new ball while the other end attacks, and indefensible if it means using the whole restriction to get set. The measure is not survival, it is whether the anchor is still scoring at a useful rate once the field spreads. A batter who is slow early and slow afterwards is not anchoring, he is occupying deliveries.

What does hitting through the line mean?

It means playing straight along the path of a ball that is moving, trusting the swing or seam to be small enough that a full swing of the bat down the line still finds the middle. It works best against a hard new ball on a true surface, where pace comes on and the ball has to be hit rather than manufactured. Against significant lateral movement or a slow pitch it is the highest-risk option available.

What should a team do after losing an opener in the first over?

Continue the plan with the phase in mind rather than the scoreboard, because the restriction expires whether or not a wicket has fallen. The incoming batter usually needs a handful of deliveries, so the surviving batter takes on more of the scoring in that window. What is a matchup in T20 batting?

It is a deliberate pairing of one batter against one bowler, based on which end each is at, the angle of delivery, the type of bowling and the areas the batter scores in. Is it better to bat the powerplay harder when chasing or when setting?

Chasing gives a batting side a known target, so the powerplay plan can be worked backwards from it and the risk taken is measurable.
