A season in one country
The 2020 season was arranged in three months and played in one place. With borders closed across the region and the pandemic at its height, the league moved the entire tournament to Trinidad and Tobago: twenty-three matches at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba and ten at the Queen's Park Oval, all behind closed doors, with squads, staff and officials confined to a single hotel.
It worked. Thirty-three matches were played without interruption between 18 August and 10 September, and the Caribbean Premier League became one of the first major franchise competitions to be completed after the shutdown, several weeks before the Indian Premier League restarted in the Emirates.
Twelve out of twelve
Trinbago Knight Riders, playing every match at home in a sense that meant nothing without crowds, won all ten group matches. Guyana Amazon Warriors and St Lucia Zouks won six each; St Kitts and Nevis Patriots won one.
In the first semi-final the Knight Riders bowled Jamaica Tallawahs out for 107 and chased it in fifteen overs, Akeal Hosein taking the award. The second semi-final was the shortest match of the season: Guyana were bowled out for 55 in 13.4 overs, the second-lowest total the competition had recorded, and St Lucia knocked the runs off in 4.3 overs without losing a wicket. Mark Deyal took the award.
Tarouba, 10 September
St Lucia batted first in the final and made 154, Nicholas Pooran having made 100 from 45 earlier in the tournament but not here. The Knight Riders reached 157 for 2 in 18.1 overs, Lendl Simmons taking the match award. Simmons finished with 356 runs, the most in a low-scoring season.
The result made Trinbago the only side to have won every match of a Caribbean Premier League season: ten group matches, a semi-final and a final. It was their fourth title in six seasons. Kieron Pollard, their captain, was named player of the tournament, and Scott Kuggeleijn of the beaten finalists took the most wickets with 17.
