Six finals
Guyana Amazon Warriors had reached the final in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019 and had lost all five. They had also lost two qualifiers and, in 2019, a group stage in which they won all ten matches. By the eleventh season the franchise had become the competition's standing example of the gap between form and trophies.
The 2023 season closed it. Guyana won eight of their ten group matches to finish top, lost Qualifier 1 to Trinbago Knight Riders by seven wickets, then beat Jamaica Tallawahs by 81 runs in Qualifier 2 and Trinbago by nine wickets in the final.
The touring group stage
The schedule was arranged in five blocks, each of six matches, with Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana hosting one in turn. It gave every territory a concentrated week of cricket rather than scattered fixtures, and it put ten matches, including the whole playoff stage, at Providence in Guyana.
Shai Hope made 481 runs for Guyana and was named player of the tournament. Dwaine Pretorius, a South African all-rounder in his first season with them, took 20 wickets and the match award in both Qualifier 2 and the final. Alex Hales made 119 for the Knight Riders, the highest score of the season, and Rahkeem Cornwall, Nicholas Pooran and Martin Guptill all made hundreds.
Providence, 24 September
The final was short. Trinbago Knight Riders batted first and were bowled out for 94 in 18.1 overs, Pretorius taking the award. Guyana reached 99 for 1 in fourteen overs in front of a full house at their own ground.
It was the first title for the last of the six original franchises to win one, and it came in the season when Jamaica Tallawahs, who had won three, played their last match: in December the league announced the franchise would be replaced by an Antigua-based side after its owners could not run it sustainably.
