Pakistan Cricket Pitches and Playing Conditions

Pakistani pitches have a reputation for being flat, and the reputation is about half right. First-innings totals at Karachi, Lahore and Multan are frequently enormous, and two of the highest team scores made anywhere in the last decade were made in Pakistan. But the same grounds have produced Test matches decided by twenty-two runs and by twenty-six, and in 2024 one produced a match in which two spinners took all twenty wickets. The variation is not between grounds so much as within a single match.
The underlying reason is soil and climate rather than curatorship. Pakistani squares are made of hard, low-clay soil that bakes rather than binds. A freshly prepared surface is true and fast-scoring; a surface three days into a Test, or one that has been used before and dried out, grips and cracks. Neither state involves much bounce, which is why a fast bowler in Pakistan works with the old ball rather than the new one and why the country's spinners have generally been wrist-spinners rather than tall off-spinners looking for lift.
What follows is a practical account: what happens across five days, how each ground differs, how the season constrains everything, and how to read a pitch report from Pakistan without being misled by the word "flat".
What Pakistan started with: matting over rolled earth
The first thing to know about Pakistani conditions is that for the country's earliest Test years there were barely any. Pakistan entered Test cricket in 1952 with home matches played on matting stretched across rolled earth, because turf squares of Test standard did not yet exist. Matting rewarded a specific kind of bowler — one who could cut the ball off the surface rather than swing it — and the country's first great bowler, Fazal Mahmood, built his method on exactly that.
Turf replaced matting through the 1950s and 1960s, but the character of the ground underneath did not change. The squares that were laid were built on the same dry alluvial soils, in the same climate, and they behaved in a recognisably related way. The five-day arc
A Test in Pakistan tends to follow a shape that is unusually predictable in outline and unpredictable in timing.
- Session one. New-ball movement, if any, is brief. At Karachi under lights or at Rawalpindi with grass left on, there can be twenty overs of genuine seam. Elsewhere the window closes inside an hour.
- Days one and two. The surface is at its best for batting: consistent height, no appreciable turn, predictable pace. This is where 500-plus first innings totals come from.
- Day two onwards. The abrasive top starts to rough one side of the ball, and reverse swing becomes available to bowlers who can produce it. This is earlier in Pakistan than almost anywhere.
- Days three to five. Footholes deepen, cracks open, and spin becomes the primary threat. Turn arrives more often as gradual grip than as sharp deviation, which rewards a spinner who bowls twenty-five overs rather than one hunting a wicket every over.
The practical consequence is that the fourth innings on a Pakistani pitch is a much harder proposition than the first, and margins in low-scoring Tests there are often tiny because both sides are batting on effectively different pitches. Multan's Tests decided by 22 runs in 2005 and 26 runs in 2022 were both won by the side that handled the transition rather than the side that batted best on the opening day.

Rawalpindi deserves the specific note because its recent history is the clearest demonstration of how much control a Pakistani curator has. In March 2022 the ground produced a Test against Australia so lifeless that the match referee rated the pitch below average and docked it a demerit point. In December that year, on another flat surface, England made 506 for 4 on the first day. In October 2024 the same square, reused and dried out, turned sharply from the first morning and Pakistan's spinners bowled them to a series win. The season, and why it is so short
Pakistan's cricket calendar is compressed by weather at both ends. High summer across most of the country makes outdoor sport genuinely dangerous rather than merely uncomfortable — Multan and Karachi in June are not viable venues for a five-day match — and the monsoon follows into September. That leaves a Test window running roughly from October to December, with a second window in February and March before the heat returns.
Two consequences follow. The first is that Pakistan plays home Tests in the two periods when the square is driest and most likely to break up, which is part of why Pakistani surfaces turn: it is a function of when cricket can be played, not only of how pitches are prepared. The second is that the domestic first-class season, described in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy guide, has to fit into the same narrow windows as the international programme, which is why the two are so often in competition for grounds and players.
Early-season matches, in October, can have appreciable movement in the first session because the square still holds moisture. By December the moisture is gone. In February and March, particularly at Lahore and Rawalpindi, morning conditions can be genuinely cold and the ball will do more for longer.
Reverse swing, and why it starts early here
The single most distinctive feature of Pakistani conditions is how quickly the ball ages. The abrasive top surface scuffs one side of the ball within twenty-five or thirty overs, far sooner than on a grassed English or New Zealand square, and once one side is rough and the other kept smooth the ball begins to swing towards the rough side at pace.
This is not a trick that was invented in a laboratory; it was discovered by bowlers who had nothing else available on a dead pitch in the afternoon heat. What matters for conditions is the timing: a captain in Pakistan is planning his second spell of the day around an old ball rather than around a fresh one, and a visiting attack that does not know how to bowl with a scuffed ball has an unusable middle session.
Dew, lights and white-ball cricket
Limited-overs cricket in Pakistan is a different problem from Test cricket, and the deciding variable is dew. Evening matches at Lahore, Karachi and Multan frequently see significant dew settle from the middle of the second innings, which does three things: it makes the ball difficult to grip for spinners, it kills reverse swing by wetting the rough side, and it makes the outfield faster.
The consistent effect is that the side chasing is favoured under lights at most Pakistani venues, and captains' decisions at the toss in the Pakistan Super League reflect that almost mechanically. Groundstaff manage it with anti-dew sprays and by cutting the outfield short, and it remains the single biggest source of imbalance in white-ball cricket there.
What conditions do to selection
Pakistani conditions push selection towards options most other Test nations would not consider.
The clearest example is recent. In the first Test against England at Multan in October 2024, on a freshly prepared surface, England declared on 823 for 7 with a 317 from Harry Brook and a 262 from Joe Root — the fourth-highest total in Test history. For the second Test, played on the same reused and dried surface, Pakistan left out their frontline seamers entirely and played two spinners as the attack. Sajid Khan took seven for 111 and Noman Ali eight for 46 in England's innings, and between them the pair took all twenty wickets in the match, the first time a bowling pair had done that since 1972. Pakistan won by 152 runs, then won at Rawalpindi to take the series 2-1. The images of industrial fans and heaters arranged across the square between matches became the defining picture of that cricketing autumn.
That is an extreme case, but the general principle holds. A visiting side selecting for Pakistan has to decide whether it is preparing for the first two days of a match or the last two, and the answers require different teams. A home side has more information and can prepare accordingly, which is what home advantage means in practice.
How to read a Pakistani pitch report
A few translations are useful.
- "Good batting surface." True for the first two days. Says nothing about days four and five.
- "A bit of grass on it." In Pakistan this usually means the curator has left cover to protect the surface rather than to generate seam movement, and it will burn off.
- "Cracks appearing." The relevant question is whether they are opening across the pitch or along it. Cracks along the line of the pitch cause inconsistent bounce; cracks across it give spinners a target.
- "Used pitch." The most important two words available. A reused surface in Pakistan will grip from the first session, and a match played on one is a spin contest whatever anyone says at the toss.
- "Dew expected." At an evening match, treat this as a strong indication that the side chasing has the advantage regardless of the surface.
The argument about home advantage
Pakistan's pitch debate is not the same as India's or England's. There is a genuine argument at home about whether producing extreme turners for the sake of results damages the country's own cricketers, particularly its fast bowlers, who spend home series watching. The counter-argument is that Pakistan went years without winning a home Test series while producing neutral surfaces, and that no other country volunteers to remove its own advantage.
There is also a technical worry. A young quick who bowls eight overs a Test at home learns nothing, and a batter who bats only on turners arrives in Australia unable to play the ball that bounces.
