How Cricket Scoring Works, Book to Net Run Rate

Cricket has two people whose only job is to write down what happened, and the Laws name them. That is unusual among sports. In baseball an official scorer exercises judgement — he decides whether a play was a hit or an error. A cricket scorer decides nothing. The umpires make every determination and signal it; the scorer's job is to acknowledge the signal and record it correctly, and to make the book balance at the end.
Understanding cricket scoring is a different task from understanding the rules of cricket. This page is about the arithmetic: what gets written down, who is charged for what, and how the numbers on a broadcast scoreboard are produced.
It matters more than it sounds, because several things that look like rules are actually accounting conventions. Whether a run is charged to the bowler, whether a delivery counts as a ball faced, and how a rain-shortened target is calculated are all questions the scorebook answers, not the umpire.
Two scorers, and Law 3
Law 3 of the Laws of Cricket requires that two scorers be appointed to record all runs scored, all wickets taken, and where relevant the number of overs bowled. At professional level each side usually supplies one. They work independently and reconcile against each other.
The key constraint is the one already mentioned: scorers do not judge. An umpire signals a boundary, a bye, a no-ball, a leg bye, a wide or a dead ball, and the scorer must acknowledge the signal — visibly, so the umpire knows it was received — before play continues. If an umpire signals nothing, nothing unusual happened.
The corollary is that scorer errors are correctable and umpire errors are not. A wrong decision on the field stands; a wrong entry in the book can be fixed afterwards, and often is.
The book, and what has to balance
A traditional scorebook has two facing halves, and understanding cricket statistics is mostly a matter of understanding that they must agree.
One half is the batting analysis: a row per batter, recording every scoring stroke, how they were dismissed and who dismissed them. The other half is the bowling analysis: a row per bowler, divided into overs, recording every delivery they bowled and what came of it.
At the end of an innings, three totals must reconcile:
- Runs credited to batters, plus extras, must equal the team total.
- Runs charged to bowlers, plus byes, leg byes and penalties, must also equal the team total.
- Balls recorded in the bowling analysis must equal legal deliveries faced across the batting analysis.
If those do not agree, something has been recorded wrongly and the scorers hunt for it. This is why a scorebook is a document rather than a tally: it is double-entry bookkeeping with a cricket vocabulary.
Linear scoring
From the late nineteenth century onwards, scorers developed a second system alongside the traditional book. Linear scoring — associated particularly with Bill Frindall, the long-serving BBC scorer — records the match as a continuous ball-by-ball sequence rather than as two summaries.
The advantage is that it preserves the correspondence between individual batter and individual bowler. A traditional book tells you that a batter made 47 and that a bowler conceded 62; a linear book tells you how many of those 47 came off that bowler, and in which overs. Every modern statistical treatment of cricket — bowler-versus-batter matchups, phase-of-innings analysis, the numbers a commentator quotes about how a player performs against left-arm spin — depends on data recorded in that shape.

The notation
Scoring uses a compact symbolic shorthand, standard enough that a scorer can read another country's book.

The dot is the most important symbol in the system and the one newcomers underrate. Cricket's basic unit of pressure is the delivery that produces nothing, and a bowling analysis full of dots is a good spell even if no wickets fell.
Extras, and who gets charged
This is the part that trips people up, and it is pure accounting.
Four kinds of extra run exist, and they are treated differently:
- Wides and no-balls are charged to the bowler. They count against his runs conceded and therefore against his economy rate. A no-ball or wide is also not counted as one of the six legal deliveries in the over, so it must be bowled again.
- Byes and leg byes are added to the team total but are not charged to the bowler. A bye is a run taken when the ball passes the batter and the wicketkeeper without being hit; a leg bye is a run taken after the ball has struck the batter's body. The bowler's analysis is unaffected, because neither was his fault in the accounting sense.
- Penalty runs, awarded for various offences, go to the team total without being credited to a batter or charged to a bowler.
Two related conventions follow. A wide is not a ball faced by the batter, so it does not affect his strike rate. A bye or leg bye came off a legal delivery, so it does count as a ball faced — the batter is credited with facing it and with scoring nothing from it.
None of that changes who won. It changes every individual statistic in the match, which is why a scorer's precision on extras matters.
The derived numbers
Almost every statistic quoted about cricket is a ratio computed from the book. The four that matter most:
- Batting average: runs scored divided by the number of times dismissed — not divided by innings. A batter who is not out at the end of an innings has that innings excluded from the denominator, which is why a specialist finisher can carry a high average on modest scores.
- Batting strike rate: runs per 100 balls faced. In Twenty20 this is often more informative than the average.
- Bowling average: runs conceded divided by wickets taken. Lower is better, and it is the reverse of the batting figure in structure.
- Economy rate: runs conceded per over bowled. The limited-overs bowler's core measure.
Bowling strike rate exists too and means something different from the batting version: balls bowled per wicket taken, a measure of how quickly a bowler gets people out rather than how quickly runs are scored. That divergence in meaning is a genuine source of confusion and worth knowing before reading a broadcast graphic. Net run rate, and how a group is decided
When two teams finish a tournament group level on points, cricket usually separates them by net run rate, which was first used as an ICC tie-breaker at the 1992 World Cup.
The tournament calculation is:
Net run rate = (total runs scored across all matches ÷ total overs faced) − (total runs conceded across all matches ÷ total overs bowled)
The single most important quirk: when a team is bowled out before its allocation of overs is complete, the calculation still uses the full allocation. A side dismissed for 90 in 25 overs of a 50-over match is treated as having faced 50. This is why being bowled out cheaply is catastrophic for net run rate and why a side chasing a small target will sometimes try to finish the job in as few overs as possible.
Net run rate is widely criticised, and reasonably so. It ignores wickets entirely, so a narrow win chased down quickly can be worth more than a crushing one. It can be manipulated. And it is hard to explain, which becomes a problem in the final round of group matches when three teams are calculating scenarios simultaneously — as happened repeatedly at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA.
When rain arrives: the DLS par score
The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method exists because the previous rain rules produced an absurdity — most famously in the 1992 World Cup semi-final between England and South Africa, which is what prompted two British statisticians, Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis, to devise something better. It was first used internationally on 1 January 1997 and formally adopted by the ICC in 1999. The Australian statistician Steven Stern later became its custodian, and the method was renamed in 2014.
The idea underneath it is one word: resources. A batting side has two — overs remaining and wickets remaining — and the method converts every combination of the two into a percentage, where a full innings with all wickets standing is 100 per cent. The target for the side batting second is then their opponents' score scaled by the ratio of the resources each side actually had.
In a match that may be shortened, scoreboards display a running par score, updated ball by ball: what the chasing side would need to have made to tie if play were abandoned at that instant. The target to win is one run above par. This is the number American viewers see and misread most often — a side "ahead of DLS" is winning the match on the current rain scenario, not ahead of the required run rate in any conventional sense.
The method has real limitations. Wickets are weighted heavily relative to overs, which can reward slow, safe batting when rain is forecast, and its predictive accuracy is weakest in the middle phase of a shortened innings. It is also genuinely complicated, and confusion about it has affected matches.
How American club cricket actually scores
At club level in the United States, most scoring is now done on a phone or a tablet rather than in a book. Leagues run on league-management platforms that handle registration, fixtures, live scoring and statistics together, and a nominated scorer from each side enters the match ball by ball as it happens.
Three practical consequences, if you are joining a club:
- You will be asked to score. In most American leagues the batting side supplies the scorer, and it will fall to whoever is not in yet. Learn the app before you learn the symbols.
- The app enforces the balance. Digital scoring makes the reconciliation automatic, which removes the most common source of error and introduces a new one: a mis-tapped extra is harder to spot than a mis-drawn triangle.
- The statistics are the point. Club cricketers in the US take their published averages seriously, partly because league platforms make them public, and partly because Minor League Cricket selection genuinely does look at them.
