Tennis Court Surfaces in England: Which to Play On
The tennis court surfaces UK clubs and parks actually build, from porous macadam to artificial clay, and how each one plays, drains, wears and costs.

Walk onto almost any court in this country — a park court in Leeds, the two behind a village hall in Surrey, the six at a leisure centre in Devon — and you are standing on bitumen macadam with a coloured acrylic coating painted over it. Not clay. Not grass, whatever a fortnight in SW19 might suggest. The English default is a dark, hard, porous construction that lets water fall straight through itself, and it won on rainfall and money rather than on any opinion about how tennis ought to be played.
Between them, LTA-registered venues run five broad surface families, and the ITF recognises a longer list again. This guide takes each in turn: how it is built, how the ball comes off it, what it does in the wet, what it demands of whoever looks after it, and what has to be on your feet before the club will let you on.
Why macadam became the English default
Porous macadam is laid hot in two courses over a compacted stone sub-base, the lower course coarse and the upper one finer, both open-textured enough that the voids between the aggregate stay connected all the way down. Water goes through. It does not run across the court to a channel at the side, and it does not sit in a shallow pool over a settled patch, because there is nowhere for it to sit.
That one property explains the whole market. English rain is distributed rather than seasonal: it falls in every month, usually in short amounts, often overnight. A surface that is playable twenty minutes after a shower without a groundsman touching it is worth more here than a surface that plays beautifully and needs two hours of sun.
On top of the black macadam goes the part players actually see. An acrylic binder loaded with graded sand is squeegeed on in several passes, and it does two jobs at once — it gives the court its green, blue or terracotta colour, and the sand grade in the mix sets how much the ball bites on landing. A club that wants its courts a shade slower can specify a coarser sand at the next recolouring without laying a single new tonne of macadam. Very few clubs know this, which is a shame, because it is the cheapest tuning available to them.
The failure modes are as predictable as the construction. Moss and algae colonise anything shaded, so the north-facing corner under the sycamore goes green first and stays slippery longest. The colour coat oxidises and thins along the baselines, where every player in the club stands for most of every rally. Hairline cracks open where the ground moves, and once water gets into a crack and freezes, the crack stops being hairline.
There is a non-porous version, dense macadam, sealed rather than open. It is smoother and it plays true, and it needs a shallow fall built across the court so that rain has somewhere to go. In a heavy shower it holds surface water in a way a porous court never does, which in England is a considerable disadvantage for a small gain in evenness. Most new builds have gone porous.

The sequence a club plans for, not a timetable. How long each stage lasts depends on the site, the drainage, the shade and how hard the courts are used.
Artificial grass, and what the sand is really doing
Take polypropylene fibres, tuft them into a permeable backing, roll the carpet out over a macadam or aggregate base, glue the joints, and brush kiln-dried silica sand down into the pile. That is a sand-filled artificial grass court, and after macadam it is the surface an English player is most likely to meet.
The distinction between sand-filled and sand-dressed is a matter of how far up the fibre the sand comes. Filled means close to the top, with very little free pile standing proud; dressed means lower, leaving more fibre exposed. Filled courts are the common tennis specification in Britain.
The sand is not ballast. It holds the fibres upright, it weights the carpet against the base so the whole thing does not creep, and it is the layer your shoe actually meets — which is why you can slide on artificial grass in a way you cannot on macadam, and why the slide feels grittier and shorter than a slide on clay. The ball skids off low. Pace is deceptive: a well-brushed court plays medium-fast with a bounce that stays under the hip, and players who like to hit through the court tend to prefer it to macadam within about a week of trying it.
Clubs choose it for reasons that have nothing to do with how it plays. It takes floodlighting well, it is comfortable underfoot in cold weather, and it keeps a court usable through a January evening in a way that a wet macadam surface with a low sun on it does not. What it asks in return is brushing. Sand migrates — to the corners, to the low spots, out of the service boxes and into the tramlines — and a court that is not dragged and power-brushed regularly compacts, goes slick and fast, and starts to hold water where the infill has thinned. Left long enough, the fibres lie flat and never come back up. The carpet itself has a finite life measured in years of use and ultraviolet exposure, and no amount of brushing extends it once the fibre has gone brittle.
Indoor needle-punch carpet is a separate product that looks superficially similar and behaves nothing like it: no infill, a much faster surface, and a bounce that stays very low. You will meet it in older indoor centres rather than outdoors.
Acrylic hard courts and where England keeps them
Everything called a hard court in Melbourne or New York is an acrylic system, and the difference between that and a macadam court with a colour coat is the number of layers and whether any of them are cushioned. A full acrylic build puts a resurfacer over the asphalt or concrete base, then successive coats of acrylic loaded with sand and, in a cushioned system, rubber granules, and finishes with two colour coats and the lines.
The result is a court with a genuinely consistent bounce across the whole playing area, because the surface is built up to a tolerance rather than rolled to one. That matters more than it sounds. On a worn macadam court the ball comes off the baseline area differently from the service box, and good players compensate without noticing they are doing it.
In England these systems cluster where the money and the performance requirement are: indoor centres, county performance venues, universities, and the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, which was built with a range of surfaces precisely so that British players could train on something resembling what they would meet abroad. A handful of clubs have laid cushioned acrylic outdoors and are pleased with it.
The cushioning is the reason to choose it. A rubber-modified layer takes measurable load out of the impact and can be specified in different thicknesses, which makes it the one mainstream hard surface where a club gets to make that trade deliberately. The cost is that the whole system sits on a base which still has to be sound, and a failure below telegraphs straight through everything above it.
Natural grass, and why so few clubs still have one
Grass is the surface the sport is named after, and in England it is now a minority interest maintained at some expense by clubs who have decided it is part of who they are.
The season is the problem. A grass court in this climate can be played from around late May to early September, which is roughly a third of the year, and the other two-thirds are spent preparing for it. The court has to be scarified and re-seeded in autumn, top-dressed and left to grow in, rolled in spring when the ground holds the right moisture, then mown progressively lower over several weeks until it reaches playing height. Every one of those operations has a weather window, and English weather does not always provide one.
Wear is concentrated and unavoidable. Two players standing behind the baseline for an afternoon will take the grass off in the two spots they stand in, and there is no version of grass-court management that prevents this; there is only rotation, which requires having more courts than you need. Clubs with a single grass court tend to lose it eventually.
What survives is a network worth seeking out — the clubs that host the pre-Wimbledon circuit, the older members' clubs in the home counties, and a scattering of village clubs where somebody with a mower has quietly kept the thing alive for forty years. The pattern of work a natural grass court needs in an English climate. Dates move with the weather and with the club's soil type, so this is the order of operations rather than a calendar.
Artificial clay and England's very small clay network
British tennis has spent decades being quietly embarrassed about clay. Juniors from this country arrive at European clay events having played almost none, and the difference shows in their footwork before it shows in their groundstrokes.
True clay is not, in fact, clay. A continental court is built as a deep permeable structure with a thin dressing of crushed brick over a limestone binding layer, and it has to be watered, rolled, brushed and re-dressed constantly. It also needs a season warm enough to keep the top layer stable, which England provides for part of the year and no more.
The British compromise, where clubs have made one, is artificial clay: a short synthetic carpet dressed with crushed brick or a ceramic granule that behaves close enough to the real thing to be useful. The ball grips and sits up. You can slide. The court drains through the carpet rather than through a metre of built-up structure, so it survives an English winter and comes back after rain in a way a true clay court would not.
Older British players remember something else again — the red shale courts that were once common at clubs across the country, a rolled and watered surface that was Britain's own answer to continental clay and that has largely been paved over since. A few survive. They are excellent when they have been looked after and unplayable when they have not, which is roughly the story of every shale court ever laid.
If clay matters to you, the practical advice is unromantic: find out which clubs within travelling distance have any form of clay before you commit anywhere, because the number is small enough that geography rather than preference will make the decision. What the ITF's pace classification actually measures
Surfaces are not classified by what they are made of. The ITF's Court Pace Rating is a measured quantity, derived from how a ball behaves when it is fired at the surface at a controlled speed and angle, and the resulting number puts a specific tested product into one of five categories.

Two things follow, and the second is the one people get wrong. The classification belongs to a product as tested, not to a family, so one manufacturer's acrylic can sit in a different category from another's, and the same court will drift between categories over its life as the coating wears. And pace rating measures how much speed the ball keeps off the bounce, which is not the same as how fast the game feels. A low bounce shortens your preparation time even on a surface with a modest rating, which is why sand-filled artificial grass often feels quicker than its number suggests.
How each surface plays, and which game it flatters
The court itself never changes. Same rectangle, same net height, same tramlines, whether it is grass at a members' club or macadam behind a leisure centre in Rochdale.

What changes is what happens in the fraction of a second the ball is in contact with the ground. On clay and artificial clay the ball digs in, loses speed and climbs, which rewards heavy topspin, deep court position and a willingness to play a rally out over twenty shots. Flat hitters suffer. Players with good legs and no weapons win matches they would lose anywhere else.
Grass does the opposite. The ball skids low, keeps its speed and sometimes keeps its sideways movement too, so a slice stays down around the ankle and a flat serve is barely returnable when it lands where it was aimed. Court position moves forward. The tactical premium shifts onto the first two shots of the point, which is part of why the English grass season produces results that look eccentric next to the rest of the year.
Sand-filled artificial grass sits closer to grass than most people expect — low bounce, fair pace, a bit of slide — while acrylic and macadam occupy a middle band where a competent all-court game works and no particular style is punished. That middle band is why they are so widespread. A club with one court type and a hundred and fifty members of every standard wants a surface that is nobody's ideal and nobody's disaster.
The awkward truth is that most English players never develop a surface preference, because they have only ever played on one thing. Spend a week on artificial clay and you will find out which of your shots were being propped up by a fast, low bounce.
Rain, drainage and the number of days you actually get
Playable days per year is the metric English clubs should use and almost none of them publish.
Porous macadam recovers fastest, because the water is already gone before you arrive. There is a caveat everyone learns the hard way — a porous court whose voids have silted up with detritus, moss and windblown soil is no longer porous, and a court that used to drain and now puddles has not failed structurally, it has simply not been cleaned for several years.
Sand-filled artificial grass drains through the carpet backing and the base beneath it, and does so well when the infill is level. Where sand has migrated and the pile has compacted, water perches. Non-porous macadam and acrylic systems shed water sideways to a fall, which works until leaves block the channel or the fall has flattened out through settlement.
Grass loses days on both sides. It cannot be played wet, because the surface tears and studs go through it, and after heavy rain it needs sun and wind more than it needs the calendar. A wet fortnight in high summer costs a grass club a meaningful part of its whole season.
Floodlighting interacts with all of this. A lit artificial grass court in December gives a club evening play in weather where a lit macadam court is a sheet of surface water under a low sun. Clubs that have both often close one and not the other for exactly this reason, and park courts built without lights are effectively summer-only regardless of what they are surfaced with.
What each surface asks of the people who look after it
Cost, for a club, is rarely the build. It is the twenty years afterwards.

A macadam court run by a committee that sweeps it and treats the moss will outlast an artificial grass court run by a committee that does neither, and the artificial grass court will have cost more to build. That is the single most useful thing to know about club surfaces, and it is why the state of a club's courts tells you more about the club than about the surface.
Volunteer capacity decides more of this than budget does. Brushing an artificial grass court properly needs a tractor-mounted brush and somebody willing to spend a Sunday morning behind it. Renovating a grass court needs a person who knows what they are doing and machinery most clubs have to hire. Where that person leaves and is not replaced, the surface decision quietly gets made again by default, and it usually gets made in favour of macadam.
Shoes, and the rule most clubs enforce without explaining
The sign on the gate is not there to be officious. Every surface has a sole pattern that damages it, and on a synthetic surface the damage is permanent.

Running shoes are the recurring problem. They are built for straight-line impact rather than lateral load, they offer almost no support in the movement tennis actually asks for, and on artificial grass the aggressive tread lifts the fibre and shifts the sand. A player in running shoes on artificial grass is doing minor damage on every change of direction, to their own ankles as well as to the club's carpet.
Grass shoes are the one category worth owning specifically, and only if you play on grass at all. Everything else can be handled with a decent all-court shoe, which is what the vast majority of English players should buy and what most of the wider tennis world is shod in.
Impact, joints and the surface to be on at fifty
Braking is where tennis hurts you. Not running, not hitting — stopping.
On an unyielding surface the deceleration passes through the foot, the ankle, the knee and the hip in sequence, and the whole load is taken by the body. On clay and artificial clay part of it goes into the slide instead, which is why players with knee problems who move to clay often find the problem becomes manageable rather than career-ending. The mechanism is straightforward and the practical difference is large.
Cushioned acrylic sits deliberately in between. The rubber layer absorbs a fraction of the impact and can be specified thicker where a venue knows it is serving an older membership, which is the sort of decision a club makes once and lives with for two decades.
Artificial grass gives a short slide and a slightly softer landing than macadam, and its low bounce means less overhead loading through the shoulder across a session, because the ball is at hip height rather than shoulder height for most of the rally. Natural grass is soft to land on and unforgiving of a foot that goes early — the injuries associated with it are slips and twists rather than a slow accumulation of impact.
None of this is an argument against macadam, which the overwhelming majority of English tennis is played on without incident. It is an argument for being honest about surface when something already hurts. A player managing a chronic knee will get more tennis out of the year on artificial clay than on a hard court, and that is worth a longer drive.
Choosing a club by its courts
Membership decisions get made on distance and price, and then people spend five years playing on something they do not enjoy.
Ask three questions before you join. How many courts are floodlit, because that number, not the total, determines your winter tennis. What is the surface and when was it last renewed, phrased exactly like that, because a club that knows the answer is a club with a plan. And how are courts allocated in the evening, because six courts under a rigid league booking pattern can offer less social play than three under an open system.
Then walk on them. A macadam court gone grey and slick at the baselines plays differently from the same court recoated, and you can see the difference from the net post. Green staining in a corner means shade and standing damp. Sand piled in the tramlines of an artificial grass court means nobody has brushed it this season. Cracks that have been filled are a club looking after itself; cracks that have not are a bill somebody is postponing.
Where you have a genuine choice of surface within reach, take the one that suits how you want to play rather than the one that suits how you play now. A player who has spent a lifetime on low, fast macadam and wants to build a topspin game will develop faster on artificial clay, and will be worse at it for a while, which is the price. The last consideration is the least obvious. Surfaces determine who a club attracts, over years, and clubs come to resemble their courts. Grass clubs run on volunteers and tradition and have a social season. Artificial grass clubs play through the winter and produce solid, grinding league players. Macadam clubs are everybody. That is not a bad thing to know when you are deciding where to spend two evenings a week for the next decade.
