Stand on the first tee at a rota venue on a still morning in early July and the course looks almost defenceless. The fairways are wide. There is no water. The rough, from a distance, looks like an ordinary meadow. Half the greens are visible from where you are standing and the flags are barely moving.
Come back at four in the afternoon with fifteen knots off the sea and the same course has stopped being recognisable. The fairway you thought was wide has a pot bunker sitting exactly where a ball that starts down the middle now finishes. The green you were going to fly with a 7-iron will not hold anything flown at it, and the meadow has become the reason you are playing your third from a spot you cannot see the flag from.
That gap — between what a links looks like and what it does — is the whole argument for keeping the oldest championship in golf on this kind of ground, and it is why The R&A has never staged it anywhere else.
What links land actually is
Linksland is a specific product of the last ice age and the sea that followed it. As the ice retreated and sea levels fell, the coast left behind broad shelves of sand. Onshore wind piled that sand into dune ridges and blew hollows between them. Marram grass, which tolerates burial and salt, colonised the dunes and held them in place. Behind the front line of dunes the ground settled into a rumpled, low-fertility strip of sandy soil that would grow fescue and bent grasses and almost nothing else.
The word itself comes from an old English term for a ridge or rising ground. It described a landform long before it described a golf course, and it is worth keeping that order in mind, because the ground was not shaped for golf. Golf was simply the only use anyone could find for it.
That is the key point. Linksland was agriculturally worthless. It would not take a plough, it would not hold water, and it grew nothing a farmer wanted. What it did support was rabbits and, in places, sheep. The rabbits burrowed, and their scrapes and warrens blew out into hollows. The sheep and rabbits grazed the sward down to something close to a mown surface without anyone lifting a scythe. The result was a natural playing surface: short grass on sand, punctuated by sandy hollows, sitting on land nobody had a better use for and which was, in Scotland, frequently held as common ground with a right of public recreation attached.
Golf did not colonise this ground by accident or by taste. It went there because it was the only open, closely cropped, publicly available land in the country. True links and the courses that only look like one
The word gets used loosely, and it is worth being precise about it, because a good deal of marketing depends on the imprecision. A course beside the sea is not automatically a links. If it sits on clay, holds water, needs heavy irrigation to keep its grass alive and grows rye or meadow grasses rather than fescue, it is a seaside course rather than a links, however exposed it may be.
The test that matters is agronomic rather than scenic. Does the water go down through the profile within hours? Will the turf hold a firm surface through a dry week without dying? Do the native grasses survive on the nutrition the sand provides? A course that fails those tests will not produce the running ball, and without the running ball the strategy that links golf is built on does not exist.
England's genuine links are concentrated in a handful of coastal strips: the Kent coast around Sandwich and Deal, the Lancashire coast from Formby up through Southport and St Annes, the north Norfolk shoreline, parts of Devon and Cumbria, and the Wirral. That is a short list, and every English course that has staged The Open comes from it.
Why the earliest championships had nowhere else to go
When Prestwick staged the first Championship in 1860, the alternative venues did not exist. Inland golf in Britain was negligible. Course construction as a discipline had not been invented, irrigation was not available, and there was no way to make a playable surface out of a clay field in a wet climate. Every club of consequence played on the coast: St Andrews, Musselburgh, Leith, Bruntsfield, Prestwick, North Berwick.
So the Championship rotated among the courses that existed. Prestwick held it alone for eleven stagings, then from 1872 it moved between Prestwick, St Andrews and Musselburgh. That was not a policy decision about the merits of links golf. It was an inventory.
The Championship came to England in 1894, at Royal St George's in Sandwich, and the choice tells you the same story. Sandwich is a links, on the Kent coast, on the same kind of blown sand as its Scottish predecessors. Royal Liverpool at Hoylake followed in 1897. When the rota expanded through the twentieth century it expanded to Royal Lytham and St Annes, to Royal Birkdale on the Lancashire coast, to Royal Cinque Ports at Deal and to Prince's next door. Every one of them is a links. The English venues that have hosted the Championship form a coastal list with no exceptions in it.
By the time inland golf in England had matured — and by the 1920s the heathland courses of Surrey and Berkshire were among the best in the world — the Championship had a century of links behind it and an identity built on it. The absence of an inland Open is not a slight against those courses. It is an inherited constraint that hardened into a principle, and The R&A has been explicit that the coastal character of the rota is something it intends to protect.
Firm, fast turf and the ball that is meant to run
Fescue and browntop bent are fine-leaved grasses that grow densely and thrive on poor, dry, sandy soil. They do not need much water, they do not need much feeding, and when they are mown tight over sand they produce a surface that is unusually firm underfoot and unusually fast for a golf ball.
A ball landing on that surface at the shallow angle of a low iron shot does not stop. It skids, takes the pace out of the first bounce, then releases and rolls, and the distance it runs can exceed the distance it flew from the last twenty yards of its carry. The whole strategy of links golf follows from this: you are not aiming at a flag, you are aiming at a piece of ground twenty or thirty yards short of it and reading the contours between there and the hole.
The shot that suits this is a low one. A ball flown high into a links wind is at the mercy of it for longer, lands steeply and unpredictably, and gives up distance. A ball driven low under the wind holds its line, lands flat and runs. That is why the running approach — chased in with a 6-iron, a hybrid or a fairway wood from well short of the green — is a percentage play at The Open and a curiosity almost everywhere else in the professional calendar.
Judging the running approach is a learned skill rather than an instinct, and it is the single hardest adjustment for a visiting player. The calculation has three parts: the carry to a chosen landing point, the behaviour of the first bounce, and the amount of roll the slope between there and the hole will add or remove. Get the first right and the second wrong and the ball finishes forty yards away. Firmness changes daily, which is why practice rounds at a links involve dropping several balls short of a green and watching what each one does rather than hitting more approaches at the flag.
Putting from off the green follows the same logic. Links greens are usually at grade with their surrounds, mown into the fairway with no ridge or collar to stop a ball, and the approach from thirty yards can be played with a putter across ground that is only marginally slower than the green itself. It removes the strike from the equation, which is exactly what you want in a crosswind.
Wind as the primary defence, and what a calm day exposes
A links has no trees. It has dune ridges, which shelter individual spots and funnel wind through gaps, but it has nothing that slows the air across the property as a whole. Wind reaches the golfer at more or less its full strength, and because the coast is where sea and land temperatures fight it out, the direction and speed change through the day and with the state of the tide.
This is the Championship's principal defence, and it is not a metaphor. A par four of 430 yards that needs a driver and a 9-iron downwind can need a driver, a 3-wood and a chip into the same breeze. Holes reverse their character. A green that is receptive from one direction is unplayable from another because the approach angle now runs along a ridge instead of into it. The corollary is uncomfortable and rarely stated plainly: when the wind drops, a links is exposed. Take the breeze away from a firm, wide, treeless course with generous fairways and no water, and the best players in the world will take it apart. Low scoring at The Open is almost always a calm-morning phenomenon rather than evidence that the course has been softened.
That is the trade The R&A accepts. It could defend the course against calm weather by narrowing fairways to twenty yards, growing the rough to the knee and cutting the greens to a speed no links surface should hold. It has consistently declined, on the grounds that doing so would ruin the course for the eighty per cent of the week when the wind does blow.
Doing the arithmetic in a crosswind
The practical skill a links demands is not bravery but arithmetic. A player standing over a shot in a strong wind is solving three problems at once: how much distance the wind will take off or add, how far right or left it will push the ball, and how much the changed descent angle will alter the roll after landing. The third is the one amateurs ignore and the one that decides whether a ball finishes on the green or thirty yards through it.
Into the wind, the ball climbs, loses distance disproportionately and lands steeply, which paradoxically makes it stop faster. Downwind, it flattens out, carries further than expected and then runs a very long way on a firm surface, which is why a downwind par four can be more dangerous than the same hole into a gale. Across the wind, the ball drifts through the whole of its flight and the drift compounds with height, so the knockdown shot — shorter backswing, ball back, hands ahead, abbreviated finish — exists to reduce the time the wind has to work.
Caddies at a rota venue tend to think in clubs rather than yards for this reason. Two clubs more, one club less and hold it against the breeze, half a club and a smoother swing: the vocabulary is imprecise because the variables are, and a player who insists on a single number from a rangefinder will be wrong more often than the caddie who guesses in whole clubs.
Pot bunkers, revetted faces and the sideways recovery
A pot bunker is small, round and deep, with a face built from stacked turf sods laid like brickwork. The originals were sheep shelters and rabbit scrapes that the wind hollowed out; the modern versions are rebuilt by hand, often annually, because a revetted face erodes and collapses if it is left alone.
The important feature is the angle of the face, which is close to vertical. A ball that finishes under it cannot be advanced towards the hole, because there is no launch window. The player's options are to play out sideways, to play out backwards, or to attempt something ambitious and lose two shots instead of one.
The Rules give a little relief and it is not free. A ball may be declared unplayable in a bunker and dropped within the bunker for one penalty stroke, and since the 2019 revision it may also be taken out of the bunker altogether on the back-on-the-line relief option for two penalty strokes. That second option was added precisely because pot bunkers exist and because the previous rules could leave a competent player with no sane way out.
Strategically, pot bunkers do something no other hazard does. Because they are small, they punish accuracy rather than error: a drive that finishes five yards off line may be in the middle of the fairway while a drive that finishes on line and one length longer is in a bunker the player never considered. That is intentional. A links asks the player to know exactly where the trouble is, not merely to avoid the general area of it.
Why they are rebuilt by hand every year
Revetting is skilled greenkeeping labour. Turf sods, usually cut from the course's own rough, are stacked in courses with a slight batter so the face leans back into the bunker. A well-built face lasts a few seasons; a face on an exposed dune may last one. Championship venues on the rota rebuild the significant bunkers on a rolling programme, and the work is one reason a links costs more to maintain than its bare appearance suggests.
Fescue, gorse and the penalty for missing on the wrong side
Links rough is not one thing. Immediately off the fairway there is usually a band of slightly longer fescue from which a full recovery is possible. Beyond that the grass thickens, and the character changes depending on how much rain has fallen in spring. A wet spring produces heavy, matted rough at the base that will not release a ball. A dry one produces wispy stuff that looks intimidating and holds nothing.
Gorse is the definitive links hazard away from the sand. It is dense, thorny, waist to shoulder high, and effectively a lost-ball area. Marram on the dune faces is nearly as bad, because the leaf is stiff enough to twist a clubface at impact.
The consequence for strategy is that the two sides of a links fairway are never equally forgiving, and the good side changes with the wind. A player working out a hole is not asking whether to miss, but which miss costs least today. That asymmetry — missing right is a chip out, missing left is a reload — is a large part of what course knowledge means here.
Rough on a links is also less predictable than the graduated cuts used at inland championships. Two balls a metre apart can sit entirely differently. The Championship accepts that inconsistency because manufacturing consistency would mean irrigating and fertilising, and both would destroy the firmness the rest of the test depends on.
Blind shots, marker posts and course knowledge as a weapon
Because a links follows the dune ridges rather than cutting through them, it is full of shots played over ground the player cannot see beyond. Blind tee shots over a ridge, approaches to greens hidden in a hollow, and marker posts standing in for a flag are all standard equipment.
Modern architecture treats this as a fault. Links architecture treats it as a consequence of respecting the ground, and the R&A has shown no interest in bulldozing the humps that cause it. Some of the most famous holes in Championship history ask the player to hit at a post on a skyline and trust the yardage.
What follows is that local knowledge has a genuine competitive value that has largely disappeared from the professional game elsewhere. Knowing that a particular slope will feed a ball twelve yards left, or that a green sits four feet below the horizon line so the flag is always further away than it looks, is information you get by walking the course rather than by reading a book. Caddies who have worked a rota venue for years are hired for exactly this, and the practice rounds at The Open involve a strange amount of time spent standing behind greens looking backwards up the hole.
Drainage, and why a links survives rain that closes a parkland
Sand percolates. A links green built on native sand can take an hour of heavy rain and be firm again the same afternoon, because the water goes down rather than sideways and there is nothing beneath the rootzone to hold it. A parkland course on clay does the opposite: the water sits, the surface softens, footfall churns it, and the course either closes or turns into a mud bath.
This is why the Championship is playable in weather that would abandon most sporting events, and it is why suspension at The Open is nearly always about wind rather than rain. It also explains something that puzzles visitors: a links can be soaked at eight in the morning and running fast by lunchtime.
There is a limit to it, and honesty requires stating it. Exceptional rainfall over several days will eventually saturate even a sand rootzone, and low-lying hollows on some links will hold standing water when the tide is high and the water table rises with it. Casual water on a links fairway is unusual rather than impossible, and the Rules provide relief for it in the ordinary way. What almost never happens is the thing that closes an inland course: a surface so soft that walking on it does structural damage.
The same property makes winter golf on a links possible without temporary greens, which is why the coastal clubs of Kent, Lancashire and Norfolk keep full courses open through months in which inland clubs are on mats. It is also, incidentally, the principle that modern green construction imitates. A USGA-specification green is an artificial attempt to reproduce, at great expense, the drainage that a links has for free.
How The R&A prepares a links for championship week
Preparation for The Open is largely a matter of restraint. The essential work is done months earlier, in the growing of the rough and the rebuilding of bunker faces, and the championship week itself is about managing firmness rather than creating difficulty.

The greenkeeping team hand-waters greens in small quantities to stop them dying rather than to soften them, and the decision on any given evening depends on what the forecast says the wind will do. A green that is perfect in ten knots can become impossible to hold in thirty, so watering is a wind judgement as much as an agronomic one. Two other points are worth noting. The R&A publishes course statistics and setup intentions rather than concealing them, which is a different posture from some other championships. And the rota courses are ordinary members' courses for fifty-one weeks of the year, so the preparation has to be something a club can recover from.
Why an inland English course has never been added
England has inland courses of genuine championship quality. The Surrey and Berkshire heathland belt — sandy, heather-clad, drained by the same geology that makes it good for pines — comes closer to links conditions than any other inland ground in the country, and the best of it is covered in the guide to English heathland golf. None of them has been given The Open, and the reasons are practical as well as philosophical.
The practical one is space. A modern Open requires a tented village, grandstands, car parking for tens of thousands, and a road network that can absorb them. Heathland courses in the home counties tend to be hemmed in by woodland, housing and protected habitat, and the land around them is among the most expensive in England.
The philosophical one is that heathland is not links. It is sandy and it drains well, but it has trees, it is sheltered, it is inland, and the wind that defines a Championship week simply does not arrive. Playing The Open there would produce a good tournament on a good course, and it would not produce The Open.
There is a third consideration that gets less attention. The rota is short, and every venue on it already waits years between stagings. Adding a venue lengthens that wait for everyone else, and The R&A has been more inclined to remove courses that can no longer handle the infrastructure than to add new ones.
Even qualifying stays on the coast
The pattern extends below the Championship itself. Final Qualifying is staged at links courses, generally within reach of that year's host, on the reasonable principle that a player earning a place should have to demonstrate the same skills the Championship will ask for. Sending qualifiers round a sheltered inland course and then dropping them on a links on Thursday morning would be a poor way of selecting a field.
Regional Qualifying is more geographically spread and does use inland venues, because the entry is large and the logistics have to work across the country. But the funnel narrows onto the coast as it approaches the Championship, and by the last stage the ground under a qualifier's feet is the same kind of ground they will play in the Championship itself.
What links conditions ask of a modern set-up
Equipment choices at The Open diverge from the rest of the season in ways that are easy to miss on television.
The first is at the top of the bag. Because the ball runs, a driver is not automatically the right club off a tee, and a long iron or driving iron that can be flighted low becomes genuinely useful rather than a specialist item. Players who normally carry a high-lofted fairway wood often replace it for the week.
The second is the wedges. A high-bounce sole, designed for soft sand and lush grass, will bounce off firm links turf and catch the middle of the ball. Low-bounce grinds are the standard swap, and they change how a player can open the face on a short shot.
The third is the ball flight itself. Low-spin, wind-cheating flights are the objective, which means shaft, loft and strike are all adjusted towards driving the ball down. Some players change ball model for the week; more adjust their delivery and accept that they are hitting a shot they have not practised much since the last coastal event.
None of this is a gimmick, and none of it is optional. A player who arrives at a rota venue with the set-up that works on soft inland courses in June will spend four days fighting the ground rather than the golf course, which is a reasonable summary of why the Championship keeps going back to the coast.
