Career

Sachin Tendulkar made his Test debut at sixteen against a Pakistan attack containing Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Imran Khan, and played international cricket for twenty-four years. No batter has scored more runs or made more centuries in either Test or One Day International cricket.

Technically he was close to orthodox — a compact, balanced base and a very still head — but he carried an unusually wide range of scoring options for a player of that discipline, from the straight drive to the paddle sweep and the upper cut over the slips. He adapted his method repeatedly across a career that spanned uncovered-era swing bowling, the rise of reverse swing and the arrival of T20.

His importance to Indian cricket extended well beyond output. For most of the 1990s the batting order was built around him almost exclusively, and his form was treated as a national event. He retired in 2013 after his 200th Test match, having won the World Cup with India in 2011.

  • First batter to score a double century in a One Day International
  • Played 200 Test matches, more than any other cricketer
  • Won the 2011 Cricket World Cup with India at his sixth attempt

Overview

What the figures show

The IPL part of Sachin Tendulkar's career runs from 2008 to 2013: 78 innings, 2,334 runs, a best of 100, an average of 33.83. 2010 was the heaviest of them, 618 runs for Mumbai Indians at an average of 47.50, 65 clear of any other season. The 100 made in 2011 is the highest score of that IPL career. Fifty has been passed fourteen times, one of those going on to hundreds. Only most of the 182 batters with 300 IPL balls behind them score slower: the median is 135.37, this is 119.8. Fours and sixes account for roughly 58% of the total — 295 and 29 of them.

Every one of those seasons was played for Mumbai Indians.

How this page was worked out

Where these figures come from

Sources for this profile

  • IPL figures computed from ball-by-ball records of 1,243 IPL matches.
  • International figures computed from Cricsheet ball-by-ball data, used under the Open Data Commons Attribution License 1.0.
  • Date of birth, playing style and photograph come from a third-party player feed, matched by name.

How the numbers are derived

  • A wide is not a ball faced; a no ball is.
  • Byes and leg byes are not charged to the bowler; wides and no balls are.
  • Six kinds of dismissal are credited to a bowler. A run out is not one of them.
  • An average is runs over dismissals, and is left blank rather than shown as infinite.
