Pink Ball Cricket: How the Ball and Twilight Change a Test

A red cricket ball is a piece of dyed leather that has been rubbed with wax. A pink one is a piece of leather that has been painted. That difference sounds trivial and it is the reason day-night Test cricket plays the way it does.

Kookaburra drum-dyes the hide so the colour goes through the skin, then sprays coats of pigment mixed with resin over the grain, then adds a bright film on top of that, then seals the whole thing under nitro-cellulose lacquer. On a red ball the grain of the leather is still exposed and takes polish. On a pink ball the grain is buried under paint. The seam is stitched in black thread rather than white, because black against pink gives a fielder and a batter something to track that white against pink does not.

Everything players complain about follows from that construction. The ball stays shiny longer than it should, so it swings for longer than a red ball would. It is harder to polish once the shine has gone, so it stops swinging fairly abruptly rather than tapering. Its surface is smoother, so a finger spinner gets less to grip. And in the twenty minutes when the sun has gone but the floodlights have not properly taken over, a fielder at deep square leg genuinely cannot see it.

What Kookaburra changes, and what it does not

The pink ball is the same weight, the same circumference and the same six-piece build as the red Kookaburra used in the rest of the Australian summer. The changes are all in the finish.

  • The leather is dyed right through rather than surface-dyed, because a pink ball that scuffs back to a pale hide reads as white on television.
  • Pigment is sprayed over the grain in several coats rather than worked into it.
  • A brighter film sits on top of the pigment, and lacquer seals it.
  • The seam is black. Green was trialled first; black gave better contrast under lights.

Kookaburra has said plainly that the paint layer makes the ball harder to look after and that sides need to work at preserving it. That is the honest version of what fielding teams discover: the first thirty overs are a gift, and after that the ball goes quiet in a way that a red ball, which keeps taking a shine off a trouser leg, does not. Reverse swing barely features, partly because the surface will not rough up evenly and partly because pink-ball Tests are played on grounds watered heavily enough to keep the outfield lush.

The practical consequence for a bowling attack is that the new ball is worth far more than usual. Over a third of all wickets in day-night Tests have fallen inside the first twenty overs of either the first or the second new ball. Captains who understand that hold a quick back for the second new ball rather than using him up in the afternoon.

Why the fielders complain more than the batters

The sighting problem is not evenly distributed around the ground.

Batters and the players in front of the wicket have consistently reported that the pink ball is easy enough to pick up during twilight, because they are looking at it against turf and against the stands. The trouble is behind and square of the wicket, where a fielder tracking a lofted ball is looking at pink against a dusk sky that is itself pink. Square leg has been named repeatedly as the worst position in the ground for those twenty minutes. Deep fielders at the first Adelaide day-night Test said the ball simply disappeared against the sky on the way down.

That is why the pink ball produces the specific spectacle of a catch being dropped by a professional outfielder who never got within a yard of it. It is also why, in the early years, some boards were reluctant to sign up. South Africa's players raised visibility as a concern before agreeing to play one, having heard directly from Australians who had.

The other half of the problem is physiological rather than optical. Eyes take time to adjust from daylight to artificial light, and the transition happens in the middle of a session rather than during an interval. A batter who has been playing comfortably for an hour has to recalibrate without stopping.

The grass that gets left on

Pink-ball Tests are played on surfaces that have been prepared for the ball rather than for the contest, and this is the single most underrated reason day-night matches look the way they do.

Because the paint layer degrades if the ball is dragged repeatedly across abrasive dry soil, curators leave more grass on than they would for a red-ball Test. At Adelaide Oval, where most Australian day-night Tests have been played, that has been standard practice since the first one in 2015, and the head curator has publicly quantified it — around six millimetres of cover ahead of the 2024 fixture against India, against the shorter, browner surface Adelaide produces for a daytime Test.

More grass means more seam movement for longer, less wear, and a surface that never really breaks up. So the pink ball is not the only variable. A day-night Test is played with a ball that swings more, on a pitch deliberately left greener, at a time of day when the air is cooling. Those three things pull in the same direction, which is why the format has produced so few dull draws and so many finishes inside four days. Three sessions, and the argument about twilight

The received wisdom is that the twilight session is the dangerous one. The numbers are less tidy than that.

Counting wickets by session across the day-night Tests played in Australia, the afternoon session — the one played in daylight, with the new ball — has taken the most wickets. The night session, under full floodlights, has taken nearly as many. The evening session, the twilight window everyone fears, has taken the fewest. A Cricket Australia analysis across thirteen pink-ball Tests reached the same conclusion from the other direction: runs per wicket were highest in the middle session, meaning it was the easiest of the three to bat in.

Other analyses, cutting the data by balls per wicket rather than runs, have put the evening session at the top. Both readings are defensible and the gap between them is small. What is not in dispute is that the night session is harder than the afternoon, and that the twilight fear is at least partly a story players tell each other.

There is a much bigger split hiding in the same data, and it is not about light at all. Under lights in Australia, visiting batters have averaged around twenty. Australian batters have averaged roughly double that. The format is not uniformly brutal. It is brutal if you have not batted much with a pink ball.

Seam three, spin one

Across Australia's day-night Tests, seamers have bowled something close to three overs for every one bowled by a spinner, and the returns justify it. Pace has cost several runs per wicket less than in daytime Tests over the same period, and opening bowlers in particular have been more effective with the pink ball than the red.

Mitchell Starc has taken more wickets in day-night Test cricket than any other bowler in the world, at an average well under twenty. That is not an accident of scheduling. A left-armer who swings the new ball at pace into the right-hander's pads, and who bowls full rather than short, is close to the ideal pink-ball bowler, because the ball's extra swinging life is concentrated in exactly the phase he is used for. Spin has not been irrelevant, but it has been narrow. Nathan Lyon has taken the great bulk of the spin wickets in the format, at a respectable average, largely by bowling long containing spells in the afternoon session while the quicks are held back. An orthodox finger spinner can get purchase on a pink ball; what he does not get is the grip a worn red ball offers on day four, because the surface has been kept damp and grassy and does not wear. Where Australians get their practice

The gap between Australian and visiting pink-ball records is largely a gap in exposure, and Cricket Australia has managed that exposure deliberately.

Floodlit first-class cricket in Australia is older than the pink ball. The Sheffield Shield trialled day-night matches in the 1990s using yellow and orange balls, which were abandoned for the same reason white balls were never viable over five days. Once Kookaburra's pink ball existed, the Shield ran a day-night round in every season from 2013-14 through to 2017-18, which is the period that produced the batters and bowlers who then dominated the first decade of pink-ball Tests.

The rounds then lapsed, and pink-ball first-class practice was largely confined to Australia A, Prime Minister's XI and CA XI fixtures against touring sides. Pink balls came back into the Shield in 2024-25, under lights at the Gabba and Adelaide Oval, ahead of a run of day-night Tests. For 2026-27 the entire seventh round is day-night: Victoria against Tasmania at the MCG, Queensland against Western Australia at the Gabba, and South Australia against New South Wales at Adelaide Oval, played in the second week of February 2027. The MCG fixture is that ground's first day-night Shield match in more than a decade, and it sits a month before the anniversary Test the MCG will host under lights in March 2027.

That interval is not accidental. Cricket Australia's head of operations has said the timing gives players pink-ball overs and gives the MCG's curators a live rehearsal of a pink-ball surface on the same square. Batting, declaring and the clock

Two tactical problems recur.

The first is the opening partnership. Openers in day-night Tests have put on far less than openers in daytime Tests — a difference of roughly ten runs per partnership across the format's history. A side that wins the toss and bats is choosing to face the newest, shiniest pink ball in the brightest light of the day, which is the least bad option available, and it still tends to cost early wickets.

The second is the declaration. Because the last session is the hardest to bat in, a captain with a lead has an obvious temptation: declare late in the afternoon and get the opposition in under lights. It has worked and it has failed. England declared on 325 for nine at Mount Maunganui in 2023 and took three wickets before stumps on the way to winning. Australia declared against the West Indies at the Gabba in 2024, got one wicket in seven overs, and lost the match by eight runs. The night session is a weapon with a wide margin of error.

If you are watching the coverage and want to know what is actually being said:

What you hear What it usually means
"There's more grass on than you'd normally see here" Standard practice, to protect the ball's paint. Not necessarily a green seamer.
"The ball's stopped doing much" The lacquer has gone. Expect a quiet passage until the next new ball.
"They'll want to bat through the twilight" Sound instinct, though the numbers suggest the night session is the harder one.
"Second new ball's not far away" The most important sentence in the broadcast. A third of wickets come in these overs.
"The lights have fully taken over" The visibility problem is now behind them. The seam movement usually is not.
