Australian Pitch Conditions by State: Soil, Bounce, Wear

An Australian curator does not really choose what his pitch will do. The choice was made decades earlier, when somebody selected a clay deposit and started carting it to the ground, and every summer since has been an argument with that decision. Perth bounces because of a black clay dug out of the Rockingham area south of the city. Sydney turns on the fourth afternoon because of a soil from Wollongong. Melbourne cracks in a particular way because of a black earth from the Merri Creek valley north of the city. Change the clay and you change the cricket, which is why so much of the technical conversation in Australian groundsmanship is about soil sourcing rather than about mowing heights.
The second thing that decides an Australian pitch is whether it is a drop-in. Three of the five main Test venues — Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth Stadium — share their playing surface with Australian rules football for half the year, so their pitches are grown offsite in steel trays and craned into a hole in the middle of the ground. The Gabba and the Sydney Cricket Ground still use a permanent square. That difference shows up in how much a pitch wears, how evenly it wears, and how much a curator can do about it once a match has started.
The third is weather that varies more across this country than most visiting sides expect. A Test in Perth in late November and a Test in Hobart in mid-January are played in different climates, on different clays, with the same brand of ball.
The soils, and the shortage nobody talks about
For most of the twentieth century Australian cricket rested on two clay deposits. Bulli soil came from near Wollongong, south of Sydney. Merri Creek soil came from around Beveridge, north of Melbourne. Both are dark, heavily cracking clays, and both are now unavailable from their original sites, which is the single largest practical problem facing Australian curators.
The replacements are not identical. New South Wales grounds have drawn on deposits at Bungonia and Coolac; Victoria has had material from the Grampians available in recent years. Clay content in current wicket soils varies widely, and a soil with seventy per cent clay behaves nothing like one with under fifty. A high-clay soil binds harder, shrinks more as it dries and produces the deep vertical cracking that gives an Australian pitch its pace and its late unevenness. A lower-clay soil is more forgiving to prepare and flatter to play on.
Grass species matter less than most pitch reports imply, but they are not irrelevant. Couch grass, in the varieties used across the warmer states, roots deep into the clay and knits the surface together, which is why a well-rooted Australian pitch tends to break up in plates rather than crumble into dust the way a subcontinental surface does. Western Australia: the clay that was moved to a stadium
When Test cricket in Perth left the WACA Ground for Perth Stadium, the concern was not the seating or the sightlines. It was whether the new ground could reproduce a surface that had made the WACA the fastest pitch in world cricket for half a century.
The answer was to use the same ingredients. The drop-in trays for Perth Stadium are filled with the same Harvey River black clay, sourced from the Rockingham region south of Perth, that gave the WACA its character, and planted with the same grass species. Head curator Isaac McDonald prepares those pitches from around September for a Test in late November, and describes the target in the same terms his predecessors did: pace, bounce and carry.
It has broadly worked. What Perth gives is not sideways movement so much as height and speed off the surface, which punishes a batter who plays back and a bowler who pitches short of a length. The other Perth variable is atmospheric. The afternoon sea breeze that comes up the Swan River — the Fremantle Doctor — cools the ground and helps the ball swing, so a bowler who has been getting nothing at two o'clock can find shape at five.
The first Ashes Test of the 2025-26 series showed both sides of the argument. Nineteen wickets fell on the opening day, the most on day one of an Ashes Test since 1909; Mitchell Starc took seven for 58 and Ben Stokes five; the whole match was over inside two days and 847 deliveries, and Travis Head's second-innings hundred settled it by eight wickets. The ICC match referee rated the pitch "very good", the top of the four-tier scale, on the grounds that the carry and bounce were consistent and the movement limited. Cricket Australia's James Allsopp said the rating vindicated the surface. Not everyone agreed, and that disagreement is the recurring Australian pitch argument in miniature: a pitch that produces nineteen wickets is either an excellent contest or a failure of preparation, depending on which you were watching for.
Queensland: humidity, and a fortress that fell
The Gabba's square is permanent, which means it is worked on continuously rather than assembled, and it has a reputation among Australian batters as the least comfortable place in the country to start an innings.
The reason is less the clay than the climate. Brisbane in late November and December is humid and prone to storms, and a Gabba pitch that has taken heavy rain in the weeks before a match holds moisture in a way that Adelaide's or Perth's will not. Grass cover left on the surface plus that moisture gives seam movement with the new ball, and the ball keeps carrying afterwards. Queensland were once dismissed for 75 and 96 on their own ground in a season when unusual early-summer rain had soaked the square.
For thirty-two years, from a West Indies win in 1988, Australia did not lose a Test there. The run ended in January 2021, when an India side with most of its senior bowlers injured chased 328 on the final day: Shubman Gill made 91, Cheteshwar Pujara 56 and Rishabh Pant an unbeaten 89, and Mohammed Siraj, three Tests into his career, had taken a five-wicket haul to make it possible. South Australia: the tray that changed a ground's character
Adelaide Oval had, for most of its history, the reputation of a batting ground — a big square, a slow outfield in the old configuration, and a surface that rewarded patience and punished impatient seam bowling.
The redevelopment completed in the early 2010s brought football back to the ground and drop-in pitches with it. Those trays are around twenty-five metres long, three metres wide and two hundred millimetres deep, filled with Athelstone clay from the Adelaide foothills and grassed with Santa Ana couch, and each weighs about thirty tonnes. Damian Hough has been head curator through that entire period, having succeeded Les Burdett in 2010, and the reserve of Athelstone soil he works from is finite and jealously guarded.
The modern Adelaide surface is quicker and offers more to seam than the ground's older reputation suggests, and its behaviour under a pink ball is different again — a subject covered separately in the guide to pink-ball cricket. The 2025-26 Ashes Test there, played with a red ball, ran the full five days and produced four totals between 286 and 371, which is roughly what the ground is meant to produce.
Victoria: two ICC ratings, eight years apart
The MCG's pitches are grown in steel frames away from the ground: twenty-four metres long, three metres wide, twenty centimetres deep, black soil with turf on top, dropped into the arena when the football finishes. The venue has been through a full cycle of criticism in the space of a decade, and in opposite directions.
In the 2017-18 Ashes, the Boxing Day Test was a lifeless draw and the ICC match referee rated the surface "poor". Head curator Matt Page was appointed to fix exactly that, and spent years producing pitches with more life in them. Then in December 2025 the correction overshot spectacularly. Twenty wickets fell on the first day of the Boxing Day Test and sixteen more on the second; no batter in the match reached fifty; England won inside two days for their first Test victory in Australia in fifteen years. Match referee Jeff Crowe rated the pitch "unsatisfactory" — the third tier, defined as a surface that tilts the contest too far towards the bowlers — and the ground took a demerit point. Page said afterwards that he had been in a state of shock at the first day, and the Melbourne Cricket Club backed him publicly, pointing out that the match sat inside a long run of well-regarded surfaces.
Both ratings are useful, because between them they define the target. A curator at the MCG is trying to find a strip that will neither die on day two nor produce thirty-six wickets in two days, using clay that is not quite the clay his predecessors had. New South Wales: Bulli soil and the fourth-innings spinner
Sydney is the one major Australian ground where a spinner expects to decide a Test, and the reason is the soil. The Bulli-based square at the SCG has traditionally produced surfaces that take spin as the match goes on, which is why Australian selection for the New Year Test has so often included a second spinner and why visiting sides study the footmarks from the second day onwards.
Chief curator Adam Lewis has been open about how narrow the margins are. For the final Test of the 2025-26 Ashes he went in with around six millimetres of grass rather than the seven of the previous season and reduced the density of the cover, a combination intended to flatten the surface slightly and encourage spin later in the match. His stated test for whether preparation is on track is simple: he wants to see a green tinge three days out, and worries when there is no live grass at that point. That Test ran into a fifth day and produced two England totals over 340 and an Australian first innings of 567, which is a Sydney scorecard of the traditional kind. Tasmania: the coldest square in the country
Hobart plays in a different climate from every other Australian first-class venue. The ground on the eastern shore of the Derwent sits in cool maritime air, gets afternoon breezes off the river, and rarely bakes the way a Brisbane or Perth square does.
The practical effect is that the ball seams and swings for longer there than anywhere else in the country and the surface does not deteriorate much, so spin is a minor factor across four days. The Ashes Test played in Hobart in January 2022 — a late replacement fixture, played under lights — finished inside four days with Australia winning by 146 runs, and neither side passed 310. For Tasmanian seam bowlers this is a considerable home advantage, and it is one reason the state has historically produced quick bowlers and hard-headed batters in numbers out of proportion to its population.
The second-tier grounds, and why they matter
The Sheffield Shield is not played only at Test grounds, and the smaller venues are often where a young player's technique is genuinely examined. A recent season used Allan Border Field alongside the Gabba in Queensland, the Junction Oval alongside the MCG in Victoria, Karen Rolton Oval alongside Adelaide Oval in South Australia, Cricket Central alongside the SCG in New South Wales, and the WACA Ground alongside Perth Stadium in Western Australia.
These grounds usually have permanent squares, smaller staffs and fewer matches in the calendar, which tends to mean fresher, more strongly grassed pitches early in a season and heavier wear late. A batter who makes runs at the Junction Oval in October has done something different from a batter who makes runs at Adelaide Oval in February. Reading an Australian pitch report
Coverage of Australian pitches leans on a small vocabulary. What it usually means:
