India vs Pakistan T20I Head-to-Head: Record & Results

India and Pakistan have played seventeen men's Twenty20 internationals. India have won thirteen, Pakistan three, and one was tied — the very first, at Kingsmead in September 2007, which India took on a bowl-out. Some record books fold that bowl-out into India's column and give the ledger as 14-3; the tie is the honest way to list it, and this page does.

Two facts shape the whole record. The first is that the fixture barely exists outside tournaments: only two of the seventeen were bilateral matches, both in December 2012, and there has not been a bilateral Twenty20 international between the sides since. The second is that none of the seventeen has been played in Pakistan. Three were played in India, and the remaining fourteen at neutral venues, six of them at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The most recent meeting was on 15 February 2026 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, a group match of a T20 World Cup being staged in India, moved out of the country so that Pakistan did not have to travel there. India won it by 61 runs, the largest runs margin either side has managed in this fixture.

Dubai is the fixture's real home. Six of the seventeen have been played there, all in tournaments held in the United Arab Emirates because neither board would send a team to the other's country: the 2021 T20 World Cup, relocated from India during the pandemic, and the Asia Cups of 2022 and 2025. Pakistan's two wins in Dubai are two of their three overall.

The absence of any match in Pakistan is not an accident of scheduling. India have not played a bilateral series against Pakistan since the two-Twenty20 and three-one-day tour of December 2012 and January 2013, and have not toured Pakistan for any format since 2008. When Pakistan hosted the 2025 Champions Trophy, India's matches were moved to Dubai; when India hosted the 2026 T20 World Cup, Pakistan's were moved to Sri Lanka. The India-Pakistan rivalry guide covers how that arrangement came about.

Pakistan's three wins

Bengaluru, 25 December 2012, was the first. India made 133 for 9 on a slow Chinnaswamy surface and Pakistan chased it in 19.4 overs for the loss of five wickets. It remains the only Twenty20 international Pakistan have won on Indian soil, and India levelled the series three days later.

Dubai, 24 October 2021, is the heaviest defeat either side has suffered in the fixture in any format. Pakistan chased 152 without losing a wicket, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan batting through the innings, and Shaheen Shah Afridi's new-ball spell had already removed India's top order. It was the first time Pakistan had beaten India at a World Cup in either white-ball format, after twelve previous meetings, and India's campaign at that 2021 T20 World Cup never recovered from it.

Dubai, 4 September 2022, was the tightest of the three. India made 181 for 7 in an Asia Cup Super Four match and Pakistan got there off the penultimate ball, Mohammad Nawaz's late hitting doing the damage. It was Pakistan's second win over India in three weeks at the same ground, having lost the group game.

Almost nothing here has been comfortable

Three of the seventeen matches were one-sided: the eight-wicket win at Colombo in 2012, Pakistan's ten-wicket win in 2021 and India's 61-run win in 2026. The other fourteen were not.

Four have been decided by runs, and the margins were 5, 11, 6 and 61 — three of them under a dozen. Eight of the seventeen were still live in the twentieth over of the second innings: the Durban tie, the 2007 final, Bengaluru in 2012, both 2022 Asia Cup meetings, Melbourne in 2022, New York in 2024 and the 2025 Asia Cup final.

The New York match on 9 June 2024 is the extreme case. India were bowled out for 119 on a pitch dropped in from Adelaide and laid at a temporary stadium, Pakistan needed 120 to win, and they finished on 113 for 7. Jasprit Bumrah took 3 for 14 from four overs and India won by six runs defending the lowest total they have ever successfully defended against Pakistan. That 2024 T20 World Cup ended with India as champions.

Nine meetings at men's T20 World Cups, and Pakistan have won one. The 2007 pair are the ones that changed the format's standing in India: the bowl-out at Durban, in which Virender Sehwag, Robin Uthappa and Harbhajan Singh all hit the stumps and none of Pakistan's three bowlers did, and then the final ten days later, where Irfan Pathan took 3 for 16, Gautam Gambhir made 75 and Misbah-ul-Haq's attempted scoop off the fourth ball of the last over was caught at short fine leg. The whole of that campaign is on the India at the 2007 World Twenty20 page.

At the other end, Colombo in February 2026 was the tidiest India have played. Ishan Kishan made 77, India reached 175 for 7, and Pakistan were dismissed for 114 with four Indian bowlers taking two wickets apiece. India went on to retain the title at that 2026 T20 World Cup.

The Melbourne match on 23 October 2022 sits between those two as the fixture's most-watched single innings: Virat Kohli's 82 not out from 53 balls, chasing 160 from a position India had no business winning from, finished off in the twentieth over. India's 2022 T20 World Cup ended in a semi-final defeat to England.

Asia Cup: six meetings, and a 2025 sweep

The Asia Cup has been played as a Twenty20 tournament in 2016, 2022 and 2025, and those editions produced six India-Pakistan T20Is. India have won five.

The 2025 edition is the only time the sides have met three times in one tournament. India won the group match by seven wickets, the Super Four match by six and the final by five, chasing on each occasion at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Tilak Varma was named player of the match in the final, in which Pakistan made 146 and India got home with two balls to spare. It was India's ninth Asia Cup title and the details are on the 2025 Asia Cup page, with India's fuller record in the competition on the India at the Asia Cup page.

Mirpur in February 2016 produced the lowest scoring of the six: Pakistan 83, India 85 for 5, on a surface that had been relaid days earlier and behaved unpredictably.

Team totals in the fixture

Score Ground Date
India's highest 192/5 Motera, Ahmedabad 28 Dec 2012
Pakistan's highest 182/5 Dubai 4 Sep 2022
India's lowest completed innings 119 Nassau County, New York 9 Jun 2024
Pakistan's lowest completed innings 83 Sher-e-Bangla, Mirpur 27 Feb 2016

Neither side has made 200 against the other in this format. That is remarkable for a fixture spanning nineteen years of Twenty20 cricket, and it is largely a function of where the matches are played: Dubai, Mirpur, Colombo and a temporary New York pitch are not grounds where 200 is normal, and six of the seventeen matches were at the first of those.

What the record actually shows

India's dominance is real but narrower than 13-3 suggests. Nearly half the matches were undecided going into the last over, and the three run-margin wins other than 2026 came by five, six and eleven runs. That is not the shape of a mismatch; it is the shape of a fixture India keep finishing.

Twenty20 is nonetheless the format in which Pakistan trail India most heavily. They hold the advantage in the overall one-day and Test ledgers between the sides, and they have never beaten India at a fifty-over World Cup — the comparison is on the India versus Pakistan ODI record page, with the Test ledger, dormant since 2007, on the India versus Pakistan Test record page.

The fixture is now almost entirely a knockout-tournament event. Fifteen of the seventeen matches came in a World Cup or an Asia Cup, both sides know they will only meet in one, and that changes how the games are played: sides pick for a single match rather than a series, and the cricket is correspondingly cautious. Whether the two boards return to bilateral cricket is a political question rather than a cricketing one, and the broader shape of the Indian game around it is on the cricket in India hub.

Sources and method

Every result on this page is taken from the published scorecard of the match concerned, cross-checked against the ICC's tournament records for World Cup and Asia Cup fixtures and against the Asian Cricket Council record for the Asia Cup editions. Dates are the date of the scheduled first day of play.

The head-to-head totals count the Durban match of 14 September 2007 as a tie rather than as an India win, because that is what it was: the scores were level after twenty overs each and the bowl-out was a separate tie-breaking procedure. Records that report 14-3 have added the bowl-out to India's wins, and both presentations are defensible.

Venue counts and the totals table are compiled from the seventeen scorecards rather than copied from a records database, so they will differ from any source that treats the Durban match differently. Individual figures named — Bumrah's 3 for 14, Pathan's 3 for 16, Gambhir's 75, Kohli's 82 not out, Kishan's 77 — come from the relevant scorecards.

No aggregate batting or bowling leaderboard for the fixture is given here, because the reliable published lists for it are updated at different times and the top of the table has moved in the last year; a figure that cannot be re-verified against a single dated source is left out rather than guessed. Results complete to 27 August 2026.
