South Africa's Fast Bowling Tradition Explained

A country of this size should not be able to produce fast bowlers at this rate. The population is a fraction of India's, the cricketing population smaller again, and for twenty-one years the national side did not play a single Test. And yet the line has never really broken. Every time one great quick finishes, another has been ready, and often two.
There is nothing mystical about it. The reasons are structural, and they are worth setting out properly, because they explain something about how fast bowlers get made anywhere.
The conditions do half the work
Start with the pitches. Domestic cricket here is played on hard, dry surfaces with real pace in them, and a young bowler learns early that hitting the deck is rewarded. That is not true everywhere. A quick growing up on slow, low pitches learns to bowl full and straight because banging it in achieves nothing. A quick growing up on the highveld learns that a ball short of a length arrives at a batter's chest.
Altitude, and then the coast
Altitude compounds it. Johannesburg and Centurion sit high enough that the thinner air reduces drag, so the ball carries and the pace off the pitch is genuine. Move down to the coast and the examination changes completely: Durban humidity produces late swing, and the Cape wind produces the conventional kind. A bowler who plays a full domestic season is required to be three different bowlers, and the ones who manage it are Test-ready before anybody picks them. The Kookaburra problem
Then there is the ball. Domestic and home international cricket here is played with a Kookaburra, which loses its seam quickly and stops swinging early. That is a hard ball to bowl with. It forces a young quick to develop pace, accuracy over long spells, and a way of getting the old ball to do something, because the twenty overs of assistance that a Duke's offers simply are not there.
The schools system does the other half
The single biggest structural advantage is a school cricket system that operates at a level most countries reserve for professional academies.
The traditional cricketing schools, and there are perhaps thirty of them that matter seriously, run programmes with multiple turf wickets, full-time coaching staff, strength and conditioning provision, and fixture lists of forty or more matches a season across a dozen age-group teams. A boy at one of those schools plays more organised cricket by eighteen than most club cricketers play in a decade, and he plays it on good surfaces against good opposition with somebody watching his action.
The representative weeks
Above that sit the representative weeks. Provincial sides at under-13, under-15, under-17 and under-19 level gather at national weeks, the senior one named after Khaya Majola, and every union sends selectors. The gap the schools leave
The system has an obvious limitation, and it is the central problem in South African cricket rather than a footnote. That schools infrastructure is not evenly distributed. The turf wickets, the coaches and the fixture lists are concentrated in a set of schools that historically served a small part of the population, and the whole apparatus of development programmes, transformation targets and rural scouting exists to address a gap that the schools system by itself would perpetuate. Procter and Pollock, and the years that were taken
Two bowlers stand at the head of the line and neither got a career.
Mike Procter bowled fast off what looked like the wrong foot, an action so unusual that it has never been successfully copied, and he was a genuine all-rounder besides. He played seven Test matches. Seven. He took 41 wickets in them at just over 15 apiece, which is a rate no bowler sustains over a long career, and then South Africa were excluded from international cricket in 1970 and he never played another Test. He spent the following fifteen years dismantling county batting line-ups for Gloucestershire.
Peter Pollock was the spearhead of the sides of the 1960s, an out-and-out quick who took well over a hundred Test wickets before the door closed. His brother Graeme made the runs and his son Shaun would later become the most economical fast bowler of the modern era.
And then there is Vintcent van der Bijl, who never played a Test at all. He was, by the accounts of everyone who faced him, an outstanding bowler: tall, relentless, and possessed of a first-class record of well over 700 wickets at an average in the mid-teens. He had one season in county cricket, at Middlesex, and destroyed the championship. That is the isolation era in one career, and the wider story of those years is in our history of South African cricket.
Donald, and the restart
When South Africa returned in 1991, they had a fast bowler ready. Allan Donald had been at Warwickshire through the isolation years and came into the Test side as a fully formed international quick, which is not something a country coming back after twenty-one years had any right to expect.
He finished with 330 wickets from 72 Tests at 22.25, and the number understates him. He was quick, he was hostile, and he had the specific quality that separates good fast bowlers from great ones: he bowled fastest when it mattered most. His spell to Michael Atherton at Trent Bridge in 1998 is one of the most replayed passages in modern Test cricket, and Atherton survived it, which is part of why it is replayed.
Donald also set the template for what happened next. He went into coaching, and a large proportion of the bowlers who followed him were coached by him at some point. The lineage here is not metaphorical. It is a small group of people who bowled fast, then taught it.
Ntini, and the widening
Makhaya Ntini's career changed what was possible. He came from a village near King William's Town in the Eastern Cape, was picked up by a development programme, and arrived in first-class cricket with an action nobody had coached into him: wide of the crease, angling the ball across right-handers from a position most bowlers cannot bowl from.
He played 101 Tests and took 390 wickets. At Lord's in 2003 he took ten in the match, the first South African to do it there. And he did all of it as the first black African to play for the national side, which brought a weight that no scorecard records. His evidence to the Social Justice and Nation-Building hearings, in which he described the isolation he felt in national squads, is part of the documented record of the process.
What Ntini demonstrated was that the talent existed outside the schools system that had produced everybody before him, and that the only thing missing was the route in.
Steyn, Morkel, Philander
The best fast bowling attack South Africa has fielded operated across roughly a decade, and it worked because the three of them were completely different bowlers.
Dale Steyn was the fastest and the most aggressive, out of a small mining town in Limpopo rather than any of the traditional cricket schools, with an outswinger at 145 kilometres an hour and the shortest fuse in the side. He finished as South Africa's leading Test wicket-taker, and his strike rate is the best of any bowler in history with three hundred or more Test wickets. That last statistic is the one to hold onto: not that he took wickets, but how few deliveries he needed.
Morne Morkel was two metres tall and bowled a length from which the ball climbed at a right-hander's gloves all day. He took 309 Test wickets and could reasonably have taken more; he had a habit of beating the bat without finding the edge that made him the unluckiest bowler of his generation.
Vernon Philander was the opposite of both. He was not quick. He bowled a fraction back of a length, moved it both ways off the seam by a small amount, and hit the top of off stump with a regularity that made batters look careless. He reached his first fifty Test wickets faster than almost anyone in the modern game and finished with 224 at an average around 22.

Shaun Pollock belongs in any list of this kind and sits slightly outside the fast-bowling stereotype. He was fast-medium rather than fast, and what set him apart was control: an economy rate under two and a half runs an over across 108 Tests, which in the modern game is close to unimaginable. Rabada, Nortje, Jansen
The current generation has not broken the line. Kagiso Rabada came out of a Johannesburg school, was picked young, and has led the attack for most of a decade, passing three hundred Test wickets along the way. He bowls quick, he swings it away from the right-hander, and he has the same trait Donald had of finding an extra gear in a session that matters.
Anrich Nortje came from the Eastern Cape and bowls about as fast as anybody in the game when fit, which has been the qualification on his career. Marco Jansen is left-arm, a shade over two metres, and generates an angle from that height that very few batters have faced before. Lungi Ngidi, Gerald Coetzee and others sit behind them.

Those are our figures, computed in-house from ball-by-ball data. Steyn's economy in that table is the striking one, because it belongs to a period when T20 scoring rates were considerably lower than they are now, and comparing across eras without saying so would be misleading.
What actually sustains the line
Four things, none of them accidental.
Volume of hard cricket at a young age. Fast bowling is a skill built by bowling, and the schools and club structures here deliver an enormous number of competitive overs before a bowler turns twenty.
A coaching lineage. Donald, Pollock and their contemporaries went into coaching roles across provincial, national and franchise cricket. Fast bowling is taught by fast bowlers, and this country has never had a shortage of people qualified to do it.
Physical culture. Athletic development is taken seriously at school level, partly because of the shared infrastructure with rugby, and a young quick arrives in professional cricket already conditioned.
Conditions that reward it. No young bowler here has ever had to be persuaded that pace is worth having.
The threats to it
The threats are real too. Injury attrition is brutal in a fast bowler's twenties. The Kolpak years removed a stream of bowlers in their peak, and the global franchise market now removes them in a different way. And the schools advantage, left alone, would narrow the intake rather than widen it.
Where it sits internationally

Test and first-class figures are taken from published international career records; where a number could not be verified confidently it has been given as an approximation and marked as such. The IPL figures in the second table are computed in-house from ball-by-ball data and reflect careers as recorded in our dataset.
