Career

MS Dhoni arrived in international cricket as a long-haired hitter from Ranchi with an unorthodox technique and no first-class pedigree from a major centre. He left it as the only captain to have won all three major ICC men's trophies, and as the player who redefined what a wicketkeeper-batter was expected to do at the end of an innings.

His batting was built around an extraordinary sense of the required rate. Rather than accelerate steadily, Dhoni would deliberately absorb pressure deep into a chase and then compress the remaining runs into a short burst — a method that looked reckless until it repeatedly worked. Behind the stumps he was fast rather than classical, and his stumping speed remains the benchmark.

As captain he was notably unhurried, trusting young bowlers in high-pressure overs and rarely showing visible frustration. He retired from Test cricket in 2014 and from international cricket in 2020, continuing to lead Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

Highlights

  • Led India to the 2007 World Twenty20 and 2011 Cricket World Cup titles
  • Captained Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles
  • Regarded as the fastest stumper in the history of the game

Overview

What the figures show

Eighteen IPL seasons, from 2008 to 2025, stand behind MS Dhoni's 5,439 runs in the competition. The best of the seasons was 2013 — 461 runs. 84 in 2019 remains the biggest single innings of it. Fifty has been passed 24 times. A strike rate of 137.4 is within a run or two of the 135.37 median for the 182 batters in this data with 300 or more IPL balls behind them. Fours and sixes account for roughly 57% of the total — 375 and 264 of them.

The clubs, in order: Chennai Super Kings (2008–2015), Rising Pune Supergiants (2016), Rising Pune Supergiant (2017) and Chennai Super Kings (2018–2025). Most of the runs, 2,987 of them, came in the Chennai Super Kings years.

How this page was worked out

Where these figures come from

Sources for this profile

  • IPL figures computed from ball-by-ball records of 1,243 IPL matches.
  • International figures computed from Cricsheet ball-by-ball data, used under the Open Data Commons Attribution License 1.0.
  • Date of birth, playing style and photograph come from a third-party player feed, matched by name.

How the numbers are derived

  • A wide is not a ball faced; a no ball is.
  • Byes and leg byes are not charged to the bowler; wides and no balls are.
  • Six kinds of dismissal are credited to a bowler. A run out is not one of them.
  • An average is runs over dismissals, and is left blank rather than shown as infinite.
