Kookaburra Ball Explained: Build, Seam and Behaviour

Almost every ball bowled in international cricket outside England, the Caribbean and India comes out of one factory in a Melbourne industrial suburb. Every ball bowled in a one-day international or a men's or women's T20 international, anywhere on earth, comes out of the same place. The company that makes them has been owned by the same family since 1890, and the product that carries its reputation is a red four-piece leather ball called the Turf.
Bowlers complain about it constantly, and the complaint is always the same: it stops doing anything. Batters in Australia plan their innings around that, waiting out the first hour and then cashing in. Understanding why the Kookaburra behaves this way means looking at how it is put together, because the ball's whole personality comes from a decision about where to put the stitching.
A saddler's shop in Brighton
Alfred Grace Thompson came to Australia from England in 1888 as a saddler and harness maker, and in 1890 opened a workshop in Bay Street, Brighton, in Melbourne. Cricket balls and footballs came out of it from the start. The business stayed on Bay Street until the mid-1950s, moved to a larger factory on the Nepean Highway, and in 2002 moved again to Chesterville Road in Moorabbin, which is where the balls are made today. It also keeps offices in India, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Two dates matter more than the rest. In 1938 the firm began exporting cricket balls, initially to South Africa. And in the mid-1940s the hand-finished Kookaburra Turf was adopted for Test cricket in Australia, replacing the English balls that had been used before the war. That contract is the foundation of everything since: it gave a Melbourne family firm the most-watched cricket in the southern hemisphere as a permanent shop window.
What is inside a Turf ball
Cut a Turf in half and you get a layered object rather than a solid one. At the centre sits a core of cork and rubber. Around that, cork and worsted yarn are wound in five distinct quilted layers, each one tightening the ball and adding to the resilience that produces bounce. Over the whole thing goes a cover of first-grade tanned steer hide, cut into four pieces rather than the two that cheaper balls use, and stitched with cabled thread.
The four-piece construction is what separates a match ball from a training ball. Two-piece balls — the leather cut in halves rather than quarters — are cheaper, go out of shape faster and are sold for club and practice use. Every ball used in serious cricket, from any manufacturer, is four-piece.
The dimensions are not Kookaburra's to choose. Law 4 of the Laws of Cricket sets a new men's ball at not less than 155.9 grams and not more than 163 grams, with a circumference between 22.4 and 22.9 centimetres. Junior and women's balls are lighter and smaller by the same code. Six rows of stitching, and only two that hold it together
Here is the detail that explains the Kookaburra's reputation, and almost nobody outside the trade knows it.
A Test ball has six rows of stitching running along the seam, three on each side. On a Kookaburra, only the middle two rows actually pass through both hemispheres of leather and hold the ball together. The outer four rows are machine-stitched into a single hemisphere each — they are decorative reinforcement rather than structural. On a Dukes ball, made in England, all six rows are stitched by hand and all six pass through both hemispheres. The Indian-made SG ball is built the same way as the Dukes in this respect.

The consequence is mechanical. A seam supported by two rows of cross-stitching sits lower and loses its shape earlier than one supported by six. Less proud seam means less for a bowler's fingers to grip and less of a ridge to disturb the air, so lateral movement drops away sooner. It also means the ball holds its overall shape less well over a long innings.
This is not a manufacturing failure. It is a design that suits the country it was built for. Australian pitches are hard and bounce, the outfields are fast and abrasive, and a ball with a Dukes seam on an Adelaide square would be doing too much for too long. The complaint and the design brief are the same fact seen from opposite ends.
Why it goes quiet after thirty overs
In Test playing conditions the fielding captain can call for a new ball once 80 overs have been bowled with the old one. That number was set with a ball that stays useful for 80 overs. A Kookaburra does not, quite.
The pattern in Australia is consistent enough that captains plan around it. The first ten to fifteen overs, while the lacquer is intact and the seam is upright, are the most dangerous period of any innings. Somewhere in the twenties and thirties the shine goes, the seam settles, and the ball enters a long flat middle passage in which a good batter on a good pitch is very hard to dislodge. The bowling side is then waiting for two things: the pitch to deteriorate, and the second new ball.
Reverse swing is the partial answer, and Australia's abrasive outfields make it available earlier than in England. But it needs one side of the ball roughed up and the other kept immaculate, it needs pace, and it needs a captain willing to hand the ball to two bowlers and nobody else — the mechanics are set out in the guide to how reverse swing works. Sides that cannot generate it face a real problem, which is why Australian attacks have historically been built around genuine pace and relentless accuracy rather than around movement, a tradition traced in the guide to Australia's greatest fast bowlers.
Spinners get a mixed deal. The Kookaburra's leather scuffs rather than wearing rough, so a finger spinner gets less to grip than the SG gives him in India, but the harder Australian surface gives him bounce that the softer ball's condition does not take away.
The white ball, and how Kookaburra took limited-overs cricket
The company's second great commercial break came from a breakaway competition. When World Series Cricket needed a ball visible under floodlights in 1977, Kookaburra developed a white one, after trials involving the promoter Austin Robertson, the broadcaster and former captain Richie Benaud, and Bruce Thompson from the company itself.
White balls stayed a novelty of the Australian summer for a decade and then became the standard. The 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand was the first played with white balls, and it was also the first to use two new balls in an innings. That practice was dropped and then reintroduced: from 2007 the ball had to be changed after the 34th over of an innings, and from 2011 one-day internationals were played with two new balls, one from each end. The reason in both cases was the white Kookaburra's tendency to discolour and go soft, which is a version of the same problem as the red ball's, made worse by pigment and by fielding restrictions that push batters to hit hard early. The company's answer has been format-specific balls. The Turf20 was developed for Twenty20 cricket with the explicit aim of staying hard through twenty overs rather than deteriorating gracefully across eighty, and Kookaburra has said it tested candidate designs using an air cannon and a wind tunnel. The three countries that use something else
Kookaburra states that its Turf is used in around 85 per cent of Test cricket and in all one-day and T20 internationals. The remaining Test cricket belongs to two rivals: the Dukes, used in England and the West Indies, and the SG, used in India.
That split is why touring is hard. An Australian batter arriving in England meets a ball whose seam stays proud for fifty overs and whose swing does not switch off at lunch, and the technique that scored runs in Perth does not transfer intact. The reverse applies to English batters in Australia, who spend a series waiting for movement that arrives in the first hour and then vanishes. Much of the recurring pattern in Ashes results comes down to which set of habits is being tested, and the ball is the largest single variable.
There is a periodic argument for standardising on one ball worldwide. It has never got far, for the honest reason that each manufacturer's ball is tuned to its own country's pitches and outfields, and a single global ball would make some conditions unplayable and others sterile.
Two trials that went in opposite directions
Both major boards have tried importing the other side's ball, and both experiments failed for opposite reasons.
Cricket Australia introduced the Dukes into the second half of the Sheffield Shield season from 2016-17, using it from the sixth round through to the final, with the specific aim of preparing batters and bowlers for Ashes tours. It ran for four seasons and was then dropped, the competition returning to the Kookaburra throughout from 2020-21. The decisive objection came from an unexpected direction: the Dukes did so much for seam bowlers on Australian surfaces that spinners barely bowled, and a competition that stops developing spinners has broken something more important than it fixed. England ran the mirror trial. The County Championship used the Kookaburra for two rounds in 2023 and four rounds in each of 2024 and 2025, hoping to teach English bowlers to take wickets without help. It produced enormous scores and very few results. In the opening fortnight of the 2024 experiment, sixteen matches yielded close to seventeen thousand runs, a little over three hundred wickets and a single outright result. The 2025 rounds were worse: Surrey declared on 820 for nine against Durham at The Oval, and across two rounds in June the first-innings average climbed to around 430. The counties voted to abandon the trial and return to the Dukes from 2026. The competition's own account of itself is on the cricket in England hub.
The lesson both trials taught is that a ball is not a portable variable. It interacts with the square, the outfield, the air and the bowlers who grew up with it.
Kookaburra has also changed the ball itself. In November 2019 a revised red Turf was introduced into two rounds of Shield cricket, the modification being a new lining beneath the leather intended to make the seam more resilient so the ball stayed hard and swung for longer. The company said it had worked on the lining for more than three years. It was an admission of the criticism and an attempt to answer it without redesigning the seam.
Which Kookaburra you are actually holding
The name on a ball tells you less than the construction does, and club cricketers routinely buy something quite unlike what they see on television.
- Turf — the four-piece, hand-finished match ball used in international cricket. The most expensive thing in the range by a wide margin.
- Regulation and Club Match — four-piece balls for good-standard club and representative cricket. Closest in behaviour to the Turf.
- Senator — a four-piece ball a step below, common in club competitions.
- Two-piece balls — Crown, Colt, Red King and similar. Cheap, durable enough for practice, and out of shape quickly. Nothing about how they age tells you anything about a Test ball.
