Indian Pitches: Types, Soil and Conditions

A cricket pitch is a manufactured object made out of dirt, and in India the dirt varies more than in any other Test-playing country. A square in Mumbai and a square in Ahmedabad are built from different soils, roll differently, crack differently and produce different cricket, and the two cities are five hundred kilometres apart. This is why "Indian conditions" as a single phrase is close to useless, and why touring sides that prepare for one kind of surface get caught by the next.
Two variables do most of the work: what the soil is made of, and how much water is left in it when play starts. Everything a curator does — rolling, watering, cutting, covering, leaving grass or shaving it off — is an attempt to control the second while stuck with the first.
What follows is the physical basis of Indian pitch behaviour, how the circuit actually differs venue to venue, what happens when a surface goes too far, and how the whole business is policed.
What a square is made of
A first-class pitch is a compacted layer of clay-rich soil over a firmer base, rolled hard enough to bind and then dried to a controlled degree. Clay content is what gives a pitch its ability to bind under a heavy roller and hold together for five days; sand content is what makes it loose and crumble-prone. Indian curators generally work with a soil high in clay — commonly well over half by content — and a very low sand fraction, and the exact mix in a given square is a local inheritance rather than a national standard.
That inheritance matters because a square is not remade every season. It is topped up, re-laid strip by strip and rolled for decades, and the character of a ground therefore changes slowly. When a venue does change quickly, it is usually because a new square has been laid, sometimes with imported soil, and it can take several seasons before anyone knows how it will behave in its fourth innings.
Moisture is the other half of it. India's domestic season is a dry-weather season by design, which is what makes controlled drying possible in the first place; the seasonal logic of that calendar, and what happens when water gets into a square, is set out in the guide to the monsoon and the Indian cricket season.
Red soil, black soil, and a map that is not tidy
The distinction Indian commentary uses constantly is between red soil and black soil squares. It is a real difference with real consequences.

Ahmedabad and Pune are the venues most often described as black-soil squares; the Wankhede in Mumbai and the Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru are the best-known red-soil ones, which is the physical reason a Mumbai pitch carries through to the keeper in a way an Ahmedabad pitch usually does not.
The map is messier than the two-column version suggests, and it is worth saying so plainly. Several venues use blends. Squares can contain strips of different composition, so two Tests at the same ground in different years may be played on materially different soil. And a good deal of what is written about individual venues' soil is inference from how the ball behaved rather than a published specification. Where a claim is that soft, it should be treated as such.
Who actually decides how a pitch plays
Pitch preparation in India is a professional craft with an institutional structure behind it. The BCCI has had a pitches committee since 1997, organised on zonal lines with a chairman and zonal representatives, and it deploys curators to prepare surfaces for internationals and to advise associations on their squares. Daljit Singh, the best-known figure in that system, chaired the grounds and pitches committee for years and trained much of the generation of curators working now.
The line of authority is where the real arguments happen. The ground belongs to the state association, the curator is often an association employee, the visiting team management has opinions, and the home team management has stronger ones. In practice a home side's requests are conveyed and frequently honoured, which is normal in world cricket and openly discussed in India — a captain asking for a dry surface is not a scandal, it is the away side's problem to solve.
What is not tolerated is a curator negotiating with anyone else. In 2017 the BCCI removed the Pune curator from his role after a television sting in which he discussed the pitch with people posing as bookmakers, ahead of a Test at the ground. That is the boundary the system is built to defend, and it is a different question entirely from whether a pitch turns.
The circuit, venue by venue
Character is best expressed as tendency rather than law: any ground can produce an atypical pitch, and several on this list have.
- M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. The traditional home of Indian spin. Hot, dry, and the surface most likely to take grip on day one, which is where the spin bowling tradition has always drawn its confidence.
- Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Pace and carry early, then sharp turn once the surface breaks; the sea breeze arriving in the afternoon is part of the ground's folklore for a reason.
- Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Slow, low, and prone to a cracked and tired surface late in the season, with a history of squares that have needed relaying.
- Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Historically the best-balanced big pitch in India: bounce for seamers, help for spinners on days four and five.
- Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. A rebuilt square, capable of producing both extremes; the fastest Test finish in modern Indian cricket happened here.
- Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali. The nearest thing India has to a seamer's Test pitch, with grass and genuine carry in a cold northern winter.
- HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala. Cool, at altitude, often the greenest surface on the circuit.
- Green Park, Kanpur, and Holkar Stadium, Indore. Older squares that dry hard and wear quickly, producing short matches.

The rank turner, and the season it turned on India
"Rank turner" describes a pitch prepared so dry that it grips from the first over and deteriorates fast. It is a deliberate tactic, and for a decade it worked almost perfectly: India did not lose a home Test series between 2012 and 2024, a run built on batters who could handle low bounce and a spin attack that could exploit it.
Two matches show the tactic at both extremes. At Ahmedabad in February 2021, in a pink-ball Test against England, twenty-nine wickets fell inside two days: Axar Patel took eleven in the match, England were dismissed for 112 and then 81, and India won by ten wickets. That is the tactic executed exactly as intended.
Then, in October 2024, New Zealand won a Test series in India for the first time, and won it 3-0. At Pune, Mitchell Santner bowled long unbroken spells for seven for 53 and six for 104, thirteen wickets in the match, and New Zealand won by 113 runs. India's first home series defeat since 2012 came on the sort of surface India had spent twelve years preparing on purpose, beaten by a left-arm spinner who had never previously taken more than three wickets in a Test innings.
That result reframed the argument, which is why the pitch debate inside Indian cricket is now genuinely open rather than settled. A surface that removes the value of pace and reduces a Test to spin skill also removes the margin a strong batting side normally enjoys, and it hands an away spinner conditions he would never otherwise get. Demerit points, and the ICC's ledger
Pitches at international matches are rated by the match referee under the ICC's pitch and outfield monitoring process, on a scale running from very good down through good, average and below average to poor and unfit. The bottom ratings carry demerit points against the venue, which accumulate on a rolling multi-year basis and can eventually cost a ground its accreditation to host international cricket.
India has twice been on the wrong end of this in ways worth knowing. In December 2009 a one-day international against Sri Lanka at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi was abandoned after 23.3 overs because the bounce was judged too dangerous to continue, with Sri Lanka five down for 83; the fallout included the removal of the board's grounds and wickets committee. And after the Indore Test against Australia in 2023, the referee Chris Broad rated the pitch poor, citing a surface that broke up from the fifth ball of the match and produced excessive and uneven bounce, and the venue was given three demerit points.
The Indore case then produced something instructive. The BCCI appealed, and the ICC's appeal panel reduced the rating from poor to below average — accepting that the referee had followed the process, but finding insufficient variable bounce to justify the harsher category. The penalty fell from three demerit points to one. It is a useful reminder that pitch ratings are judgements about balance between bat and ball, not measurements, and that they are contestable.
Footmarks, dust and the fourth innings
The distinctive feature of Indian pitch behaviour is not that the ball turns on day one. It is how much the surface changes by day four. A dry Indian square abrades under bowlers' feet, and the rough outside a right-hander's off stump becomes the most valuable real estate on the ground, which is why left-arm spin and off spin have historically been worth more in India than anywhere else.
Three things follow for anyone reading a match rather than a scorecard. Batting first is worth more in India than the toss statistics from most countries suggest, because the fourth-innings surface is usually the worst of the match. Sweeping and using the depth of the crease matter more than driving, because low bounce punishes the front-foot drive. And the reverse-swing window opens earlier than in England or New Zealand, because a dry, abrasive square roughs one side of the ball quickly — the reason India's fast bowlers developed the skills traced in the guide to Indian fast bowling.
Domestic cricket exaggerates all of it. A Ranji Trophy square gets far more matches per season than a Test square and less recovery time, which is why first-class cricket in India produces such extreme results and why a batter's home average in a Ranji season needs reading with care.
White-ball surfaces, and the second season
The Indian Premier League puts a completely different demand on the same grounds. A T20 tournament wants full, flat, high-scoring surfaces, played mostly in the evening, in the hottest months of the Indian year — which is the opposite of what a Test curator spends the winter producing.
The practical consequences are visible every season. Squares are rolled harder and left fuller of runs; grounds host many matches in a short window, so pitches are reused and the later games can be noticeably slower; and evening dew at some venues makes the second innings easier to bat in, which distorts the toss. Bengaluru's small ground and red-soil bounce produces the highest-scoring cricket, and Chennai the slowest, for exactly the reasons that hold in Tests.
None of this is a complaint. It does mean that a figure drawn from IPL cricket at a venue tells you very little about how a Test at the same ground in December will play.
What the conditions do to an India XI
Conditions shape the side. India has almost always picked at least two front-line spinners at home and often three, and has long valued the spin-bowling all-rounder — a player who bats in the top seven and bowls twenty overs — because the fourth innings needs volume. Wicketkeeping in India is judged by standing up to spin on a low, dusty surface rather than by taking edges at chest height, a standard explored in the guide to India's great wicketkeepers.
It also explains the shape of Indian batting careers. A technique built on the back foot and on soft hands against turn is not automatically the technique needed at Headingley, which is the oldest problem in Indian cricket and the reason overseas tours have always been the real test of a generation.
