India's Test Cricket Grounds: The Full Circuit

No country has spread Test cricket across as much ground as India. More than thirty separate venues have staged a Test match here, which is roughly double Pakistan's total and around three times South Africa's. Australia has effectively settled on five or six. England rotates among seven. India has a list you have to scroll.
The reason is not that India loves Test cricket more. It is that the Indian board is a federation of state associations, each of which owns a stadium, and each of which regards an international match as its share of a common asset. Awarding a Test is therefore a political act as much as a cricketing one, and the list of venues is the accumulated record of ninety years of those decisions.
This page is about the circuit as a whole: how a Test is allocated, which grounds are actually in current use, what the less-familiar venues do to a cricket ball, and what has been lost along the way. Thirty-plus grounds, and how the number got there
The count passed thirty in the middle of the 2020s. The Assam Cricket Association Stadium at Barsapara in Guwahati staged its first Test in November 2025, against South Africa — the first Test ever played in the north-east of the country — and the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium at Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, followed in June 2026 with a one-off Test against Afghanistan that sat outside the World Test Championship cycle.
Sources differ on the exact running total, which tells you something in itself: grounds have changed names, associations have moved from one stadium to another in the same city, and a handful of venues staged a single Test decades ago and were never used again. The safe statement is that India has used more than thirty grounds, more than any other Test nation, and that the number continues to rise by one every few years.
The distribution across those grounds is extremely uneven. A small number of venues have hosted dozens of Tests each; a long tail have hosted one or two.
How a Test actually gets allocated
Three things decide it: the board's rotation policy, the state association's bid and readiness, and influence.
The rotation policy has existed in formalised terms since around 2010. Its stated purpose is to spread international cricket rather than concentrate it in four or five metros, and in practice it now cycles Tests through roughly a dozen active venues while white-ball internationals are spread far wider. The policy is also one of the more consistently criticised things the board does. Complaints fall into three groups.
- That it is applied selectively. Non-traditional venues have received marquee Tests while Mumbai and Kolkata have been left with white-ball fixtures in the same season, and the explanations offered have not always satisfied the associations that missed out.
- That readiness is judged inconsistently. Some grounds with newer facilities have waited years; others have been added quickly.
- That the cricket suffers. Virat Kohli argued publicly in 2019 that India should concentrate Tests at five strong venues to build atmosphere and tradition, on the basis that a Test in front of four thousand people in a 40,000-seat bowl does the format no favours. Sourav Ganguly has argued the opposite case — that Tests must be shared beyond the traditional centres or whole regions never see one.
Both arguments are honest and they are irreconcilable. What the board has done in practice is split the difference: the biggest series get concentrated at the largest and most reliable grounds, and the smaller series are used to give newer venues their turn.
The venues added since 2016
The largest single expansion of the circuit came in one season. Six grounds staged their first Test in 2016-17: Indore first, in September 2016 against New Zealand, then Rajkot and Visakhapatnam during England's tour, then Pune, Ranchi and Dharamsala during Australia's visit in early 2017.
That was a deliberate act of distribution — new stadiums built by associations in Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh, all of which had been running international white-ball cricket and wanted the longer format.
They have not been used equally since. Some have become regular hosts; others have had one or two Tests in a decade.
What the second-tier grounds actually do
The character of these venues is worth knowing, because they are where a fair proportion of modern Indian Tests are now played, and because they are not simply generic dust bowls.

Two caveats. First, curators respond to instructions, and an Indian home Test pitch is prepared with a plan for the match rather than to express the ground's timeless nature — so a venue's reputation describes tendency, not law. Second, the range across these grounds is wider than the stereotype allows: a Test at Dharamsala and a Test at Kanpur are almost different sports. Ahmedabad, and what size buys
The Narendra Modi Stadium is the outlier in every direction. Owned and run by the Gujarat Cricket Association, rebuilt on the site of the old Motera ground and reopened in 2020 after complete demolition and reconstruction, it seats around 132,000 — the largest cricket stadium in the world, and the largest stadium of any kind by capacity, having passed the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Its Test record has been genuinely varied, which is not what a purpose-built modern stadium is supposed to produce. It has staged Tests that finished inside three days and Tests in which two sides made huge first-innings totals and neither could force a result. That inconsistency is partly the square's youth: freshly laid pitches take years to settle, and the venue has had less time than its profile suggests.
The strategic point about Ahmedabad is that it can absorb a crowd no other ground can, which makes it the natural home for a match the board wants to be an event. The trade-off is that a Test drawing 20,000 people looks empty there in a way it would not at Chepauk.
The grounds that lost Test cricket
The most instructive case is Brabourne Stadium in Bombay, which hosted Tests from 1948 into the early 1970s and then stopped — not because of the pitch, but because of a ticketing dispute.
The Cricket Club of India owned Brabourne and controlled the seat allocation. When the Bombay Cricket Association could not secure the seats it wanted for England's visit, it built its own ground a few hundred metres away. The Wankhede staged its first Test during the West Indies tour of 1974-75, and Brabourne has not hosted a Test since, though it has remained in use for first-class and domestic cricket. Two Test-standard grounds within walking distance of each other, one of them permanently retired by an administrative quarrel, is a very Indian outcome.
Other losses are quieter. Several venues that staged a Test in the 1950s or 1960s — municipal stadiums in cities whose associations later built new grounds elsewhere — are now club or first-class venues, or nothing. The old Motera was demolished. Green Park in Kanpur has survived on the circuit for decades in spite of periodic doubts about its facilities, largely because Uttar Pradesh cricket has a strong historical claim to a Test.
Watching a Test in India
Practical points that apply across the circuit.
- Tickets are sold by the host state association, usually online and at limited physical counters, and they go on sale late. Test tickets for anything other than an England or Australia series are usually easy to get.
- Timing. Most Indian Tests start at 9.30am local time to make use of the light and finish before dusk. Guwahati's 2025 Test started earlier still. Check the specific fixture rather than assuming.
- Season. The home Test season runs from around late September to March. Playing Test cricket in an Indian summer is not practical, and the monsoon rules out much of the middle of the year.
- What you can take in varies by venue and is often restrictive — bottles, bags and outside food are commonly refused. Association websites publish the list.
- Shade matters more than the seat number. At most grounds the upper tiers of the older stands are the only reliable shade, and a five-hour session in direct November sun in Chennai or Rajkot is a serious proposition.
The unresolved argument
The case for a wide circuit is developmental and democratic: a boy in Ranchi or Guwahati who watches a Test in his own city has a relationship with the format that television does not create, and state associations that never host anything have no reason to invest.
The case against is about quality. Test cricket rewards familiarity — a curator who has prepared five Test pitches understands what a Test pitch needs in a way that one preparing his first does not, and crowds build habits over decades, not one match every eight years. Concentrating the format would produce better pitches and better atmospheres at the cost of shutting out most of the country.
There is no settled answer, and the board's compromise position is unstable by design: it satisfies nobody completely and is renegotiated every season when the home schedule is published. What has changed is that the argument is now conducted in public, by former captains and current administrators, rather than inside the board. Venue debuts, match results and the sequence of new Test grounds have been checked against BCCI announcements, ICC material and published match records. The description of the rotation policy draws on the board's stated position and on Indian press reporting of the disputes it has generated, including the publicly recorded views of Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly. Pitch characterisations are qualitative summaries of how each venue has historically played, drawn from match reports rather than from computed data, and they describe tendency rather than a fixed property — Indian Test surfaces are prepared to instruction and vary series to series. Totals for the number of Test venues differ between reputable sources because of renamed and relocated grounds, and are therefore given here in approximate terms.
