Monsoon and the Indian Cricket Season

Indian cricket is organised around rain it never plays in. The southwest monsoon bursts onto the coast near Thiruvananthapuram at the start of June, spreads north and east until it covers the whole country by the middle of July, and begins withdrawing in early September, finishing by around the start of October. For those four months serious cricket in most of India is impossible, and the calendar simply steps around the gap.
What sits on either side of it is a summer too hot for four-day cricket and a winter that is close to ideal. That is why the first-class season runs from October to March, why the franchise league occupies March to May, and why India's home internationals cluster in the same window. It is not a preference. It is the only arrangement the weather permits.
There is one significant exception, and it is deliberate. In Mumbai, cricket is played through the monsoon on purpose, on soaked maidan pitches, in a league that has been running since 1948 and has been an unofficial finishing school for a long line of Test cricketers.
Two monsoons, not one
Most discussion of Indian cricket and weather treats the monsoon as a single national event. It is not, and the difference matters if you are planning to watch cricket in the south.
The southwest monsoon is the big one: onset at the beginning of June on the Kerala coast, full national coverage by mid-July, withdrawal from early September through to about the start of October. That is the system that ends the season in Mumbai, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Kolkata.
The northeast monsoon is separate, later and much more localised. It arrives over the south-eastern coast — Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh — around 20 October and runs for roughly fifty days. So Chennai gets its heaviest rain in the weeks when Mumbai is dry and the domestic season has just begun, which is why a Test scheduled in Chennai in November or December carries a weather risk that the same fixture in Mumbai does not.

Why the domestic season is a winter season
The Indian first-class calendar runs across the winter for two reasons that reinforce each other. The monsoon rules out June to September, and the pre-monsoon heat in April and May makes four-day cricket unreasonable — daytime temperatures in the north and centre of the country regularly make a full day in the field a medical question rather than a sporting one.
That leaves roughly October to March for everything: the Ranji Trophy, the fifty-over and Twenty20 domestic competitions, the zonal and selection-XI fixtures, the age-group tournaments and India's home internationals. It is a genuinely crowded window, and it is the reason the Ranji season is frequently split into two blocks with a gap in the middle. The franchise league takes the other usable slot. The Indian Premier League is played annually between March and May, in the pre-monsoon heat, which suits Twenty20 in a way it would not suit four-day cricket: matches are short, most are in the evening, and hard dry pitches produce the scoring the competition is sold on. The one season moved wholesale was 2020, relocated to the United Arab Emirates because of the pandemic rather than the weather. The consequence for scheduling is that the board has almost no slack. A rained-out fixture in November cannot be moved to July, and a compressed international calendar has to be fitted into the same six months as everything else. That pressure is one of the standing arguments in Indian domestic cricket, and it runs through BCCI structure explained.
The Kanga League: playing in it on purpose
Mumbai's answer to four months of unusable weather was to stop treating it as unusable. The Kanga League was founded in 1948 and is played annually between July and October, in the middle of the monsoon, on the city's maidans.
It is not a novelty competition. It runs a two-innings round-robin format across 98 teams in seven groups of fourteen, with a points system that rewards an outright win with five points, a first-innings win with three, and a tie with one or two. That is a first-class scoring structure applied to club cricket on waterlogged grass.
The conditions are the point. On a wet Mumbai square the ball, as the league's own reputation has it, can stop, shoot, skid and swing in the same day's play — sometimes in the same over. The former Mumbai batter and commentator Shishir Hattangadi has put the exchange rate at roughly 30 to 50 runs in the Kanga League being worth 80 to 100 in normal conditions, and nobody who has watched it argues with him.
The names on the team sheets over the years explain why Mumbai cricket regards it as formative. Sunil Gavaskar played in it. Zaheer Khan played in it. Sachin Tendulkar was playing Kanga League cricket at eleven and twelve years old; his son Arjun made his debut at thirteen in 2013. Mehli Irani played in the league for fifty years and retired at sixty-eight.
The cricketing case for it is simple. A batter who has learned to survive a ball that skids low off a wet surface, and a bowler who has learned what a heavy ball does when the outfield is soaked, has been examined in a way no dry-pitch competition can manage. The technical stubbornness Mumbai batting has been famous for since the 1950s was partly built in July. What water does to an Indian pitch
The standard Indian surface is a dry, hard, rolled clay square that grips and turns as it wears. Add moisture and it becomes a different animal, and the change is not the one visitors expect.
Rain does not usually make an Indian pitch seam like an English one. What it does is delay the wear. A square that has taken an hour of rain on the second morning stops breaking up, the turn arrives later, and the spinners who were expecting to bowl into a crumbling surface on day three find a slower, more docile one instead. That is the reverse of the English pattern, where rain plus cloud makes conditions more hostile rather than less.
Humidity is the more important variable for bowlers. During and immediately after monsoon withdrawal, in September and early October, air moisture is high, and that is the one period in the Indian calendar when a well-maintained ball will conventionally swing for a decent stretch of an innings. It is also the period in which reverse swing arrives late rather than early, because the outfield holds moisture and the ball does not rough up as quickly. Later in the winter, from November onwards, the squares dry out fully and the tradition that made Indian cricket what it is reasserts itself. Dew, the toss and the October evening
The single most consequential weather effect on Indian cricket is not rain. It is dew, and it operates in the weeks either side of monsoon withdrawal.
In a day-night limited-overs match in northern and central India in October and November, ground temperature falls quickly after sunset while the air is still carrying moisture, and dew settles on the outfield. That makes the ball wet and heavy: spinners lose grip, seamers lose control of the cross-seam and slower deliveries, fielders lose their footing, and the ball skids on rather than gripping.
The consequences are systematic rather than occasional. Chasing becomes easier, sometimes markedly so. Captains who win the toss in dew conditions bowl first almost without deliberation, and captains who lose it plan a defence around it — a heavier reliance on pace at the death, drier ball changes where the playing conditions allow it, and spinners bowling their overs earlier than they otherwise would.
For anyone watching, dew is the thing to check before assuming a target is defensible. A total that looks strong at the innings break in Delhi in late October frequently is not.
Reading a pitch report through the season
The information in a pitch report is more useful in India than almost anywhere else, because the same square behaves so differently across six months. Three things are worth listening for.
The colour and the cracks. A dark, damp-looking square early in the season means slower turn later. A pale, cracked one in January means it will turn from day two. Groundsmen in India are more willing than most to say so.
Whether it has been watered or covered recently. Late watering to hold a square together in the heat has a similar delaying effect to rain. It is the most common reason a pitch expected to turn does not.
The time of the match and the month. An evening start in October means dew. An evening start in January in the north usually does not, because the air is drier even though it is colder. This is the single distinction that most casual viewers miss.
The venues themselves vary as much as the seasons do — a January match at the Chepauk in Chennai and one at the Kotla in Delhi are not comparable events. The grounds and their traditional behaviour are described in India's iconic cricket stadiums.
Rain, rules and a washed-out day
When rain does interfere, the consequences differ sharply by format, and it is worth being clear about which.
In a Test or a first-class match, lost time is simply lost, which is why the Ranji Trophy's first-innings points system matters so much: a match reduced to two playable days is still a match somebody takes points from, and knockouts can be decided on a first-innings lead. In limited-overs cricket the target is recalculated, and the method is the one used worldwide — set out in Duckworth-Lewis-Stern explained. Indian grounds have generally good drainage by international standards, particularly the newer and redeveloped stadiums, so a heavy shower more often costs overs than a whole match.
Planning a trip around it
If you are travelling to watch cricket in India, the guidance is unusually simple.
- November to February is the window. Reliable weather, the heart of the domestic season, and most home internationals.
- Avoid Chennai and the south-east coast in late October and November unless you are prepared to lose days to the northeast monsoon.
- March to May gives you franchise cricket in heat, mostly in the evening, and very little rain risk.
- June to mid-September gives you almost no professional cricket anywhere in the country — with the one exception being a Mumbai maidan on a Sunday morning, where the Kanga League will be under way regardless of the weather.
