Cricket in Baseball Stadiums: How It Works

A baseball park is a wedge. Everything in it points at one corner: the seating bowl faces home plate, the foul lines run out at right angles from it, and the grass beyond them is shaped by whatever the outfield walls happened to allow. A cricket ground is a circle with a strip in the middle and the crowd all the way round. Putting one inside the other is not a matter of remarking the grass. It is a geometry problem with a fixed answer, and every American venue that has tried it has accepted the same set of compromises.
They keep trying because the alternative is worse. The United States has almost no purpose-built cricket infrastructure. When the sport needed a professional stage in 2023 it had one converted minor-league baseball park in Texas and one municipal cricket ground in Florida, and that was the inventory. Baseball parks come with floodlights, drainage, parking, concessions, broadcast cabling, press boxes and a lease office that already knows how to sell twelve thousand tickets. This page is about what happens when the two shapes meet: which venues have done it, how the pitches get there, what the cricket looks like afterwards, and where the compromise stops working.
The measurements that do not agree
The conflict is dimensional. Playing conditions for men's Twenty20 internationals put the boundary between roughly 65 and 90 metres from the centre of the pitch, and the ICC's own guidance expresses the same range in feet — no closer than about 195 feet and no further than about 270.
A typical modern ballpark gives you around 330 feet down each foul line and something close to 400 to straight centre field. Those numbers sound generous until you remember that they are measured from home plate, in a wedge, and that a cricket boundary has to be that distance from the middle of the ground in every direction. Rotate a circle inside the wedge and the two corners behind home plate — the natural place to put square boundaries — are the parts of the stadium where the wall closes in fastest.
The result is a playing area that is legal but small and, more importantly, uneven. Straight hitting has room. Square of the wicket, and particularly to one side, the rope arrives early. Batters work this out in about three overs.
Three ballparks and one travelling pitch, November 2015
The first serious attempt was an exhibition. The Cricket All-Stars series in November 2015 put two teams of retired internationals, captained by Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne, into three major-league stadiums: Citi Field in New York on 7 November, Minute Maid Park in Houston on 11 November, and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on 14 November. Warne's side won all three matches, and Kumar Sangakkara was named player of the series.
The cricketing interest was in the surface rather than the scores. Rather than attempt to grow a wicket in a baseball infield, the organisers had drop-in pitches prepared under a New Zealand curator in Minnesota and shipped to each venue, where the twenty-two-yard block was installed in the infield area behind the second-base position. That is the template every American venue has used since, and it settled the central question: a proper cricket pitch can be delivered to a ballpark by truck.
What the series did not settle was whether anyone would come back. It was a three-match novelty with no domestic competition behind it. That part took another eight years.
Grand Prairie: the only permanent conversion
The one ballpark that has actually become a cricket ground is in Grand Prairie, Texas. It opened in May 2008 as QuikTrip Park, designed by HKS for the newly formed Texas AirHogs of the American Association, and over the following decade it also housed a soccer tenant. The AirHogs stopped playing at the start of the 2020s.
American Cricket Enterprises signed a long-term lease in November 2020, broke ground in April 2022, and reopened the venue for cricket in July 2023 in time for the first Major League Cricket season. The renovation cost was reported at over twenty million dollars, part of a wider nine-figure stadium programme by the same investors. Permanent capacity came out at around 7,200 with premium and club seating, expandable to roughly 15,000 with temporary stands — which is what was installed when the ground staged four matches of the 2024 Twenty20 World Cup, including the opening fixture against Canada and the Super Over win over Pakistan.

What matters for this page is that Grand Prairie is the proof that the conversion can be permanent rather than a weekend installation, and that it took a long lease, a demolition phase and two years to get there.
Oakland: borrowed, not converted
The Oakland Coliseum went the other way. After the Athletics left, Major League Cricket took nine fixtures there for the 2025 season, opening on 12 June, with the stadium's capacity cut back to around 12,000 for cricket. It had been looked at for the 2024 World Cup and ruled out on logistical grounds.
The pitches were the interesting part. Rather than growing new blocks, the league lifted the drop-in pitches that had been used at the temporary stadium in Eisenhower Park on Long Island for the World Cup and moved them across the country — a journey of some 2,900 miles — with LandTek handling the extraction and transport and the grounds team from Adelaide Oval overseeing the grow-in and preparation once they arrived. After the fixtures the blocks were lifted again and stored. The league returned to Oakland for a longer block of matches in 2026.
That is a genuinely new model: not a stadium converted for cricket, but a set of pitches that belong to the competition and travel to whichever stadium it has booked. The engineering behind it is covered in more depth in the guide to modular cricket stadiums.
What the shape does to the scoreboard
Short square boundaries and a hard drop-in surface produce the cricket you would expect. Grand Prairie has been a high-scoring ground since it opened for the sport. Nicholas Pooran made 137 not out there in July 2023, in the competition's first season. In June 2026, Mitchell Owen hit 155 from 68 balls for Washington Freedom against MI New York, with eleven fours and thirteen sixes, in a total of 245 for 5 — the highest individual score in Major League Cricket to that point.
Two things follow. The first is that bowling in these venues is a specialist skill closer to death bowling than to conventional Twenty20 economy: a bowler with a slower ball and a yorker survives, and a length bowler who relies on the ball not carrying does not. The second is that scores of this size flatter the batting standard. A 155 in a ballpark is a genuine innings, but it is not evidence that the same player would make 155 at a full-sized ground with 85-metre boundaries all round, and selectors comparing American franchise numbers with anything else need to hold that in mind.
Watching cricket from a baseball seat
The spectator geometry inverts. In baseball the premium seats are behind home plate, close to the action and square to the batter's eye line. Convert the ground and the pitch sits out in the middle of what was the infield and outfield, which means the best seats in the house are now a long way from the middle and side-on to the game. The cheap outfield bleachers, by contrast, become boundary seating with a view straight down the ground.
Most of the practical infrastructure transfers well. Floodlights built for night baseball are perfectly adequate for a Twenty20 evening. Concourses, restrooms, transit links and parking are sized for larger crowds than cricket draws. Scoreboards need reprogramming rather than replacing. The awkward parts are the ones nobody photographs: sightscreens have to be built and positioned where a stadium wall was not designed for them, and the infield dirt cut-outs of a baseball diamond have to be turfed or covered so a fielder chasing a ball does not change surface mid-stride.

The model stops at the top level
It is worth noticing how far the ballpark idea does not travel. Minor League Cricket, the tier below the franchise competition, ran its first seasons across a dozen states — Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Washington — and almost none of it in baseball stadiums. The venues were municipal cricket grounds and public parks: Moosa Stadium and the McKinney ground in Texas, Washington Park in Chicago, Tollgate Farm Park in Washington state, Central Broward in Florida.
The reason is straightforward. A drop-in pitch, a grounds contractor and a stadium lease are broadcast-level costs, and the second tier has no broadcast revenue to set against them. What it has instead is a network of public parks with artificial or matting strips laid over a levelled base, which cost a fraction as much, need no curator and can be booked by the hour. That is also how the great majority of American club cricket is played, and it is the layer underneath everything described on this page.
So the picture is not "American cricket moves into ballparks". It is that one professional competition and one World Cup needed stadium-grade venues at short notice, and ballparks were the only stadium-grade venues available. Everything below that level carried on in the parks, as it had since the leagues were founded.
Why the ballpark route persists
There is a version of the argument that says American cricket should stop borrowing and start building. It is a reasonable position and the sport is partly acting on it — the plans and sites now under discussion are collected in the guide to future cricket venues.
The counter-argument is money and timing. A converted ballpark gives a professional competition a stadium in one off-season for a fraction of the cost of a new ground, in a metropolitan area that already has road access and a hotel supply. Empty and underused stadiums exist in most large American cities, and their owners are motivated. For a league that needed venues before it had a proven audience, that trade was not close.
Where it fails is at international level. The 2024 World Cup showed the limit: with only Grand Prairie and the Florida ground available, the tournament had to erect a temporary stadium from scratch in New York, and the results of that experiment are examined in the Nassau County stadium legacy. A borrowed ballpark can host a franchise fixture. Hosting a semi-final in front of thirty thousand people is a different requirement, and no existing American baseball stadium quite answers it.

Sources and method
Dimensional limits come from ICC playing conditions and ground guidance. Venue histories, lease dates, renovation costs and capacity figures are taken from stadium records, city announcements and league and contractor statements, including the published account of the pitch transfer from Eisenhower Park to Oakland. Match details and individual scores were checked against official scorecards. Capacities are given as approximate because temporary seating changes them from event to event.
