Chennai Super Kings vs Gujarat Titans: IPL H2H Record

Gujarat Titans have won six of the ten matches against Chennai Super Kings since entering the competition in 2022. Chennai have won four, and two of those four were the knockouts that took the 2023 title away from Gujarat at their own ground.
That final is the fixture's defining match and it took three days to finish. Rain washed out 28 May 2023 entirely; the reserve day produced Gujarat's 214 for 4, built on Sai Sudharsan's 96 from 47 balls, then more rain, then a revised Chennai target of 171 from 15 overs. Ravindra Jadeja hit a six and a four off the last two balls to win it by five wickets. It ended at around 1.35am, and it drew Chennai level with Mumbai Indians on five titles at the time.
For a fixture of only ten matches this one has been unusually violent with the bat. The first-innings average across the ten is 192, higher than any of Chennai's older fixtures, and five innings have passed 200 — four of them at Ahmedabad.

Gujarat opened the fixture with three straight wins across their title-winning 2022 season and the start of 2023. Chennai then won three in a row, ending with the final. Since 2024 the sequence has alternated, with Gujarat taking the last two.

The two 2022 fixtures were staged in Maharashtra because that season was played entirely at four Mumbai and Pune grounds. Gujarat won both. Half the fixture has been played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, and Chennai's two wins there are worth more than the split suggests: the 2023 final and the 83-run win in May 2025, which is the largest margin Chennai have managed against Gujarat.

Gujarat had won the league match at Ahmedabad in March and finished top of the table, so meeting Chennai in Qualifier 1 gave them the second route to the final if they lost. They lost both. Bowled out for 157 at Chepauk, they then made 214 in the final and could not defend the revised equivalent. Four of the five 200-plus innings, and three of the top four, came at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The 2024, 2025 and 2026 fixtures there produced 231, 230 and 229 respectively, so the ground has settled into a pattern this fixture has not seen anywhere else. Both matches at Pune and the Wankhede in 2022, by contrast, were low: Chennai's 133 for 5 at the Wankhede in May 2022 is the lowest completed total in the fixture, and Gujarat chased it in 19.1 overs.
The heaviest defeat either side has suffered is Chennai's, by 89 runs at Ahmedabad on 21 May 2026, when they were bowled out for 140 in 13.4 overs chasing 230. The second heaviest is Gujarat's 83-run loss on the same ground a year earlier. Both were at the venue where the two most one-sided results in the fixture have occurred, and neither involved the side that had been favoured on form.

Only two matches in ten have been decided by fewer than fifteen runs or fewer than four wickets: Gujarat's three-wicket win at Pune in April 2022, chasing 170 with a ball to spare, and their five-wicket win at Ahmedabad in March 2023, chasing 179 with four balls left. Both were Gujarat chases and both came in their first two seasons in the competition.
That gives the fixture a shape unlike most of Chennai's others. There is almost no middle ground: two very tight Gujarat chases, the DLS final, and seven results decided by margins of 35 runs or more, or by seven wickets or more.
Four observations the tables leave unsaid:
- Gujarat have never lost a match to Chennai at either of the two Maharashtra venues used in 2022, and Chennai have never won one there.
- Chennai's three wins by a margin have all come batting first, and their one chase was the rain-shortened final. In a fixture where the average first-innings total is 192, that is the reverse of what the scoring would suggest.
- Neither side has taken both legs of a season since Gujarat did it in 2022, until Gujarat repeated it in 2026.
- The fixture has produced no ties, no super overs and one abandoned day, which was the final.

Sources and method
All ten results, with dates, grounds, innings scores and margins, are computed from this site's IPL season match lists for 2022 to 2026 and checked against ESPNcricinfo scorecards. The 2023 final's sequence — the washout on 28 May, Gujarat's 214 for 4 with Sai Sudharsan's 96, the revised target of 171 from 15 overs and Jadeja's four and six off the last two balls — was verified from that match's published report and scorecard rather than reconstructed from a summary.
Conventions. Gujarat Titans entered the IPL in 2022, so this fixture has no pre-2022 history; the earlier Gujarat Lions franchise, which played in 2016 and 2017, was a separate entry and its matches are not counted here. All ten meetings produced a result, though the final was decided by the DLS method after a shortened second innings. Home allocation follows the designated host, which places both 2022 matches in the neutral rows even though neither side was at home. The final's 15-over Chennai innings is excluded from the first-innings average, which is calculated on the side batting first in each match.
Fixture-only individual aggregates are not given. The underlying dataset holds match results rather than ball-by-ball records, so a leading run scorer or wicket taker across these ten matches specifically cannot be computed from it and has been left out rather than estimated.
