Chennai Super Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants: IPL H2H

Lucknow Super Giants have won four of the eight matches against Chennai Super Kings since they joined the competition in 2022. Chennai have won three and the fixture at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on 3 May 2023 was abandoned without a result.

The number that separates this fixture from anything else Chennai play is the scoring. Across the seven completed matches the average first-innings total is 196, and all three meetings at Chepauk have produced more than 400 runs in the match — 422 in 2023, 423 in 2024 and 411 in 2026. Chepauk has a long reputation as a ground where 160 wins games, and against Lucknow it has not once behaved that way.

The second number is the chase. Six of the seven results have gone to the side batting second, and all four of Lucknow's wins came chasing. Only one match in the fixture, Chennai's 12-run win in April 2023, has been won by the team setting the target.

All eight meetings

# Season Date Ground Batted first Batted second Result
1 2022 31 March Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai CSK 210/7 (20) LSG 211/4 (19.3) LSG won by 6 wickets
2 2023 3 April M. A. Chidambaram Stadium CSK 217/7 (20) LSG 205/7 (20) CSK won by 12 runs
3 2023 3 May Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow No result
4 2024 19 April Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow CSK 176/6 (20) LSG 180/2 (19) LSG won by 8 wickets
5 2024 23 April M. A. Chidambaram Stadium CSK 210/4 (20) LSG 213/4 (19.3) LSG won by 6 wickets
6 2025 14 April Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow LSG 166/7 (20) CSK 168/5 (19.3) CSK won by 5 wickets
7 2026 10 May M. A. Chidambaram Stadium LSG 203/8 (20) CSK 208/5 (19.2) CSK won by 5 wickets
8 2026 15 May Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow CSK 187/5 (20) LSG 188/3 (16.4) LSG won by 7 wickets

Reading the last two columns down is the quickest way to understand the fixture. In six of seven completed matches the chasing side got there, and in four of those six they did it with an over or more to spare. The one exception is the second row.

Ledger and grounds

Where Matches CSK won LSG won No result
M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai 3 2 1 0
Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow 4 1 2 1
Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai 1 0 1 0
All matches 8 3 4 1

The 2022 fixture at the Brabourne Stadium was a neutral-venue game, since that season was played across four grounds in Mumbai and Pune. Lucknow won it by chasing 211 with three balls left, which remains the largest total either side has successfully overhauled in the fixture. Chennai's record at Ekana is one win from three completed matches, and both defeats there came with the ground playing quicker than its reputation suggests — the Ekana pitch report sets out how the surface has changed since 2022.

Every 200-plus innings in the fixture

Total Team Season Ground
217/7 Chennai Super Kings 2023 M. A. Chidambaram Stadium
213/4 Lucknow Super Giants 2024 M. A. Chidambaram Stadium
211/4 Lucknow Super Giants 2022 Brabourne Stadium
210/7 Chennai Super Kings 2022 Brabourne Stadium
210/4 Chennai Super Kings 2024 M. A. Chidambaram Stadium
208/5 Chennai Super Kings 2026 M. A. Chidambaram Stadium
205/7 Lucknow Super Giants 2023 M. A. Chidambaram Stadium
203/8 Lucknow Super Giants 2026 M. A. Chidambaram Stadium

Eight innings past 200 from fourteen completed innings is a rate no other Chennai fixture approaches, and six of the eight came at Chepauk. Every one of the three Chepauk matches has featured both sides passing 200: Chennai 217 and Lucknow 205 in 2023, Chennai 210 and Lucknow 213 in 2024, Lucknow 203 and Chennai 208 in 2026. That has happened in no other fixture at the ground with anything like this frequency, and the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium records page shows how far out of pattern it sits.

The lowest total in the fixture is Lucknow's 166 for 7 at Ekana in April 2025, and Chennai chased it in 19.3 overs for their only away win. Nothing in the fixture has been scored below 166, which across fourteen innings makes it the narrowest scoring range of any pairing either side has played more than five times.

Margins, and why nothing has been comfortable

Match Margin Balls or wickets to spare
2022, Brabourne 6 wickets 3 balls
2023, Chepauk 12 runs
2024, Ekana 8 wickets 6 balls
2024, Chepauk 6 wickets 3 balls
2025, Ekana 5 wickets 3 balls
2026, Chepauk 5 wickets 4 balls
2026, Ekana 7 wickets 20 balls

Six of the seven results were decided in the last over or the one before it. The 12-run win in 2023 is the only match in which the outcome was not in doubt going into the final six balls, and the 2026 Ekana game the only chase completed with more than an over left. For a fixture with an average first-innings total near 200, that consistency of closeness is unusual — high scoring more often produces one-sided results.

Four observations the tables do not carry:

  • Lucknow have never lost a match in this fixture batting second. Their four chases have produced four wins; their three innings batting first have produced two defeats and one no result.
  • Chennai have not once defended a total against Lucknow at Ekana, in three attempts.
  • The 2024 season is the only one in which either side won both legs. Lucknow took the Ekana match by eight wickets and the Chepauk match by six four days later — the 2024 season page has the wider campaign.
  • No match in the fixture has been decided by more than 12 runs or by more than eight wickets, which is the tightest spread of margins in any of Chennai's ten current fixtures.

Where the fixture came from

Lucknow entered the IPL in 2022 alongside Gujarat Titans, when the competition expanded to ten teams and the format split the sides into two groups of five. That structure is why the two have met once in some seasons and twice in others, and why the fixture has only eight matches after five seasons rather than ten. The 2022 season page explains the group arrangement and the IPL index lists how each subsequent season was drawn.

The Chennai Super Kings hub and the Lucknow Super Giants hub carry the squad and honours detail this page leaves out. MS Dhoni's record as Chennai's wicketkeeper covers the seasons in which the fixture began. Chennai's other 2022-vintage fixture, against Gujarat Titans, has followed a similar pattern of narrow Chennai deficits. The IPL's highest successful chases page puts Lucknow's pursuit of 211 at the Brabourne in context, the Ekana records page covers their home ground, and the cricket in India hub places the competition against the domestic calendar.

Sources and method

The eight results, with dates, grounds, innings scores, margins and balls remaining, are computed from this site's IPL season match lists for 2022 to 2026 and verified against ESPNcricinfo scorecards. Batting order in the table above is derived from the margin type in each match — a wickets margin means the winning side batted second — and checked against the scorecards rather than assumed.

Conventions worth stating plainly. The abandoned Ekana fixture of 3 May 2023 is counted in the eight and excluded from every average, margin and totals table on this page; where a figure is described as covering "completed matches" it refers to the other seven. The Ekana Cricket Stadium appears under two names in the source records, including its full BRSABV form, and is consolidated here to one ground with four matches. The Brabourne Stadium match of March 2022 is treated as neutral, since neither side was the designated host that season.

One thing is deliberately absent. Individual aggregates across these eight matches specifically — a fixture-only leading run scorer or wicket taker — are not published, because the dataset behind these tables records match results rather than ball-by-ball detail. Rather than estimate, we have left the figures out and said so. All figures current as of 27 August 2026.
