Punjab Kings lead this fixture 17-16 from 33 matches. It is the only pairing Chennai Super Kings have played more than twenty times and trail, and until recently it was not close to being that. Chennai were 14-11 up after the 2021 season. Punjab have won eight of the ten since, including the last three and four in succession at Chepauk.
One of Punjab's seventeen was a tie. At Chepauk on 21 March 2010 both sides finished on 136 and Kings XI Punjab won the Super Over — the only match in the fixture not settled inside twenty overs a side.
The fixture also holds the highest total either franchise has made against the other: Chennai's 240 for 5 at Mohali on 19 April 2008, in a match Punjab answered with 207 for 4 and still lost by 33 runs. That 447-run aggregate in the competition's first month remains the biggest single game this fixture has produced.

Chennai won the first five meetings, from April 2008 to May 2009, which is still the longest unbeaten run either side has managed. Punjab have since matched that number with five in a row of their own, running from the second leg of 2021 to the first leg of 2024. Their current sequence stands at three.

Punjab have won six of the ten at Chepauk, which is the most remarkable line in the fixture. No other side has a winning record at Chennai's ground across a sample that size. Four of those six wins are the four most recent visits, in 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, and three of them were chases completed with balls to spare. Chennai's own record in Punjab is even: three each at Mohali across two stadium names, and two of three in Dharamsala.

Punjab played as Kings XI Punjab until the end of the 2020 season and as Punjab Kings from 2021. Chennai's two-year suspension accounts for the absence of 2016 and 2017.
Two knockouts, eighteen years apart in feel

Both were played at the Wankhede and they could hardly have been less alike. The 2008 semi-final produced 228 runs in the match and Chennai won it in fifteen overs. The 2014 Qualifier 2 produced 428, the highest-scoring meeting the two have had in a knockout, and Punjab's 226 for 6 is still the largest total they have made against Chennai. The middle row is not a trend but a single season. All three 2014 meetings produced a first-innings total of 200 or more, at Abu Dhabi, at Cuttack and in the Qualifier 2, and Punjab won all three. Take 2014 out and the 2014-2019 average drops below 170. Thirteen innings in the fixture have passed 200 and five of them came in that one season.

The lowest completed total is Punjab's 92 for 8 at Durban in May 2009. Their 95 for 9 at Chepauk in April 2015 is next, and that produced the fixture's largest margin — Chennai's 97-run win. Chennai own both ten-wicket wins in the fixture — at Mohali in April 2013, chasing 139, and in Dubai in October 2020, chasing 179 without losing a wicket. No other pairing involving either side has produced two.
Four points the tables leave implicit:
- Punjab have won five matches in this fixture by four runs, seven runs, eleven runs, four wickets and five wickets. Nine of their seventeen wins came by a margin that could have gone the other way in an over.
- Chennai have never lost a match here by more than 54 runs. Punjab have lost three by 44 or more, including the 97-run defeat in 2015.
- Every meeting since 2022 has been played either at Chepauk or in Punjab, ending a long run of neutral-venue fixtures — eleven of the 33 were staged at neither home.
- The Mullanpur match in April 2025 was the first the two played at Punjab's newest home ground, and Punjab's 219 for 6 there is their second-highest total in the fixture.

Sources and method
Results, dates, grounds, innings scores and margins come from this site's IPL season match lists for 2008 to 2026 and were checked against ESPNcricinfo scorecards. The 2010 tie at Chepauk and its Super Over outcome, and the two Duckworth-Lewis-affected results, were verified individually because they affect the win columns.
Counting conventions. The tied match at Chepauk in March 2010 is credited to Punjab, as the Super Over decided it; readers who prefer to separate ties can read the ledger as Chennai 16, Punjab 16, one tied. All 33 meetings produced an outcome, so there is no no-result row. Mohali appears under two stadium names in the source records — PCA Stadium and PCA IS Bindra Stadium — and both are the same ground; the six-match combined record is given in the venue table. Dharamsala likewise appears in two forms and is consolidated to three matches.
What is not here: fixture-only individual aggregates. The dataset behind these tables holds match-level results rather than ball-by-ball records, so a leading run scorer or wicket taker across these 33 matches specifically cannot be computed and is not estimated.
