India Test best batting average: All-Time Records

At a minimum of twenty innings, the highest Test batting average by an India batter belongs to Vinod Kambli, who made 1,084 runs at 54.20 in 17 Tests between 1993 and 1995. Sachin Tendulkar is second at 53.78 from 329 innings, and Rahul Dravid third at 52.63 from 284.

Almost nobody would argue that Kambli was a better Test batter than either of the two beneath him, and that disagreement is the whole reason a page about batting averages needs to be careful about its qualification. Kambli played 21 Test innings. Tendulkar played 329. An average is a ratio, and a ratio computed over 21 innings and one computed over 329 are not the same kind of statement, even though they are written in the same notation.

The convention on this page is a twenty-innings minimum, which is the threshold ESPNcricinfo's Statsguru applies by default and which is low enough to admit short careers. The tables below show the ranking at that threshold and then at a stricter one, because the two answer different questions and readers usually want the second.

The same list at a hundred innings

Raising the bar from twenty innings to a hundred removes Kambli, Hazare, Jaiswal, Washington Sundar, Agarwal and Dhawan, and produces a list that most people would recognise as India's best Test batters in roughly the right order. That is the practical case for a higher qualification. The case against it is that it also removes Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is at 47.49 after 57 innings and may well still be there after 200.

Kambli's 54.20 and what it is worth

Vinod Kambli scored two double-centuries and two further hundreds in his first fourteen Tests. He then averaged very little across the remaining three, was dropped, and never played Test cricket again after November 1995. His average is a true figure and it sits at the top of the list by the stated rule.

What it does not tell you is that the whole of it was compiled in eleven Tests at home and six abroad, and that the innings which ended his career were against short-pitched bowling in South Africa and the West Indies. A career average is a summary of what happened, and Kambli's career stopped before the summary had time to be tested. Nobody who watched him would rank him above Sachin Tendulkar, and the number is best read as a fact about a curtailed career rather than a verdict on ability.

The general principle applies to everyone in the top twenty with fewer than sixty innings. Washington Sundar's 44.61 rests partly on nine not-outs in thirty innings, a proportion no top-order batter achieves, because he bats at seven or eight and is regularly stranded. Not-outs inflate an average by removing completed dismissals from the denominator, and for lower-order batters the effect is substantial.

Virender Sehwag's three per cent is the lowest among India's high-scoring batters and reflects a method that rarely produced an unbeaten innings: he opened, he attacked, and he was almost always dismissed. His 49.43 is therefore a harder-earned figure than a similar average built on more not-outs would be. At the other extreme, Sundar's thirty per cent means his average is computed over 21 completed dismissals rather than 30 innings.

The historical batters

Vijay Hazare at 47.65 is the highest average among India batters whose careers finished before 1960, from 52 innings across a period when India were a young Test side losing regularly. Polly Umrigar at 42.22 and Dilip Sardesai at 39.23 are the others from that era in the top twenty-five.

Those figures are worth more than their position suggests. India won two Tests in their first twenty years of Test cricket, and batting averages in a side that is repeatedly bowled out cheaply are depressed by the collapses happening at the other end. Hazare's 47.65 was compiled in conditions and against attacks — Lindwall and Miller among them — that no modern figure on this list faced.

Three observations

The top of the twenty-innings list and the top of the hundred-innings list differ by exactly one name, and the argument about that name is really an argument about what an average is for. As a description of a career that happened, Kambli's 54.20 is correct. As a prediction of what a batter would do next, which is how most readers use averages, it is close to meaningless at 21 innings.

Only five India batters have finished a Test career of more than a hundred innings averaging above 49, and three of them — Tendulkar, Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar — played more than 200 innings. Sustaining fifty across a full career is considerably rarer in Indian cricket than the leaderboard's top few rows imply.

Two of the top fifteen at the twenty-innings threshold are current players with careers likely to run for years: Jaiswal at 47.49 and Shubman Gill at 43.47. Where either finishes will be settled by several hundred more innings, and the honest thing to say now is that neither figure is yet stable.

Sources and method

All figures come from ESPNcricinfo's Statsguru career records for India men's Test cricket, read in August 2026 and covering matches to that date. Only Tests played for India count, which is why Virender Sehwag appears with 8,503 runs from 103 Tests rather than the marginally higher total that includes his appearance for the ICC World XI.

Batting average is runs divided by completed dismissals, that is innings minus not-outs. It is not runs per innings, and the difference matters most for lower-order batters with a high not-out share, which the fourth table sets out directly.

The headline table applies a twenty-innings minimum. This is the standard Statsguru qualification and it is stated rather than hidden because the ranking changes materially at other thresholds: the hundred-innings table is given alongside for exactly that reason. Any average computed over fewer than about fifty innings should be treated as a description of what happened rather than an estimate of a batter's quality, and the text says so where a figure would otherwise mislead. Where this page compares eras, that comparison is descriptive: pitch preparation, bowling quality, over rates and declaration conventions have all changed, and no adjustment for them has been attempted.
