Between January 1973 and December 2009 the Brabourne Stadium did not stage a Test match. When one finally came back, India made 726 for 9 declared against Sri Lanka — their highest total in Test cricket — with Virender Sehwag scoring 293 from 254 balls and falling seven short of a third triple hundred. The thirty-six-year interval is the longest any ground has gone between successive Tests, and the ground celebrated the end of it with the biggest score in its history.

That match is the best summary of what Brabourne is: an old ground that keeps being handed important cricket at long intervals. It opened in 1937 on reclaimed land off Marine Drive, built by the Cricket Club of India as a headquarters ground on the Lord's model, and it was the principal Test venue in Bombay until the Wankhede was built a mile away in 1974. Since then it has hosted a Champions Trophy final, the first Twenty20 international played in India, a Women's World Cup final, three separate IPL tenancies and half the inaugural Women's Premier League.

Seventeen Tests were played here between 1948 and 1973, and one in 2009. The pre-2004 matches sit outside ball-by-ball records, so the computed tables below cover the modern era only and the older material is described from published match reports.

What the ground has staged

Format Matches Span Notes
Test 18 Dec 1948 – Dec 2009 17 before 1974, one since
Men's ODI 9 Oct 1989 – Oct 2018 five of them in the 2006 Champions Trophy
Men's T20I 1 Oct 2007 the first played in India
IPL 27 Mar 2010 – May 2022 Mumbai, Rajasthan and the 2022 neutral season
Women's ODI 10 Feb 2013 the whole set from one World Cup
Women's T20I 10 Mar 2018 – Dec 2022 a tri-series and an Australian tour

The pattern is bursts rather than a calendar. Five of the nine men's one-day internationals were played inside three weeks in 2006; all ten women's one-day internationals were played inside three weeks in 2013; sixteen of the twenty-seven IPL matches came in the single displaced season of 2022, when the whole tournament was staged in and around Mumbai.

The 2009 Test: 726 for 9

India v Sri Lanka, Dec 2009 Score Principal contributions
Sri Lanka 1st innings 393 Tillakaratne Dilshan 109, Angelo Mathews 99
India 726-9 dec Virender Sehwag 293, MS Dhoni 100, Murali Vijay 87
Sri Lanka 2nd innings 309 Kumar Sangakkara 137 from 261 balls

India won by an innings and 24 runs and went to the top of the Test rankings for the first time. Sehwag's 293 came from 254 balls with 40 fours and seven sixes; he was caught at deep point off Muttiah Muralitharan with the triple in sight, and Muralitharan finished with 4 for 195 from 51 overs.

The bowling that won it was Zaheer Khan's. He took 5 for 72 in the first innings and six in the match at 3.55 an over, on a surface that had just yielded 726 in 163.3 overs. Angelo Mathews's 99 from 131 balls at number seven was the innings that got Sri Lanka to 393 in the first place, and Sangakkara batted 261 balls in the second innings for a hundred that only delayed the result.

The ground's older Test cricket produced one record that has never been matched anywhere: Vijay Hazare scored a century in each of his four Test appearances at Brabourne. The stadium was also slow to produce a result — the first three Tests here were drawn, and the fourth, against Pakistan in 1952, gave India both their first win at the ground and, in the same series, their first Test series victory. How that early period fits into the wider story is set out in the history of Test cricket in India.

The 2006 Champions Trophy: three weeks of low scores

Brabourne staged five matches of the 2006 Champions Trophy, the final among them, and the cricket was strikingly hard on batters.

2006 Champions Trophy at Brabourne Result
Sri Lanka v West Indies West Indies 80; Sri Lanka won by 9 wkts
New Zealand v South Africa New Zealand 195; South Africa 108; NZ won by 87
Australia v West Indies West Indies 234-6; Australia 224-9; WI won by 10
New Zealand v Sri Lanka New Zealand 165; Sri Lanka won by 7 wkts
Final: Australia v West Indies West Indies 138; Australia won by 8 wkts

No innings in those five matches reached 240. Farveez Maharoof's 6 for 14 in the opening match, as West Indies were dismissed for 80, is the best bowling figure in the ground's one-day record and one of the best returns in the competition's history. Four days later Jerome Taylor took the first hat-trick in Champions Trophy cricket here, removing Michael Hussey, Brad Hogg and Brett Lee in a spell of 4 for 49 that beat Australia by ten runs — Australia's only defeat of the tournament.

They met again in the final on 5 November. West Indies were bowled out for 138 in 30.4 overs, Nathan Bracken taking 3 for 22, and Australia reached a rain-revised target of 116 with eight wickets standing. The wider tournament record is covered in the guide to Champions Trophy history.

Twelve years later the ground got its only India one-day international of the modern era, and it looked nothing like 2006: India made 377 for 5 against West Indies in October 2018, Rohit Sharma 162 from 137 balls and Ambati Rayudu 100 from 81, and won by 224 runs. That total is the highest anyone has made at Brabourne in any format bar the 2009 Test. Where it sits nationally is listed in India's highest ODI team totals.

The first Twenty20 international in India

On 20 October 2007, six weeks after India won the inaugural World Twenty20 in Johannesburg, Brabourne staged the country's first T20 international. Australia made 166 for 5, Ricky Ponting scoring 76 from 53 balls, and India chased it in 18.1 overs with Gautam Gambhir making 63 from 52 and Robin Uthappa 35 from 26. Irfan Pathan took 2 for 34.

It remains the only men's T20 international played at the ground. The format's growth in India from that evening onwards is traced in the guide to T20 international cricket in India.

Twenty-seven IPL matches, three tenancies

Brabourne IPL record Figure
Highest total Rajasthan Royals 217-5 v Kolkata Knight Riders, 2022
Lowest total Royal Challengers Bangalore 68 v Sunrisers Hyderabad, 2022
Most runs Shikhar Dhawan 295 in nine innings
Highest strike rate (4+ innings) Liam Livingstone 188.5, 196 runs
Most wickets Kuldeep Yadav and Khaleel Ahmed, ten each
Best figures Yuzvendra Chahal 5-40, 2022

Mumbai Indians used the ground in 2010 and again for a play-off in 2014, Rajasthan Royals took it as a second home in 2015, and in 2022 it was one of four venues for a season played entirely in Maharashtra. The 2022 block produced both extremes: Rajasthan's 217 for 5 in April, when Jos Buttler made 103 from 61 and Kolkata still got to 210 in reply, and Bangalore's 68 all out eleven days later, when T Natarajan took 3 for 10 and Hyderabad knocked the runs off in eight overs.

The single most remembered innings came earlier. On 13 March 2010, chasing Mumbai's 212 for 6, Yusuf Pathan made 100 from 37 balls with nine fours and eight sixes — then the fastest hundred in the competition's history — and Rajasthan still lost by four runs. Chahal's 5 for 40 in 2022 is the only five-wicket haul at the ground in the IPL, and it came in the same match as Buttler's hundred.

The women's ground: a World Cup final and half a Women's Premier League

Brabourne hosted ten matches of the 2013 Women's World Cup, including the final on 17 February, in which Australia made 259 for 7 and dismissed West Indies for 145 to win by 114 runs. Jess Cameron's 75 was the highest score of the match and Lisa Sthalekar took 2 for 20 in her last international.

India played three of their group games here. Harmanpreet Kaur's 107 not out from 109 balls against England on 3 February was the only Indian century of the tournament at the ground, and it came in a defeat. Charlotte Edwards, with 286 runs from five innings including two hundreds, made more runs at Brabourne during that fortnight than anyone has in any competition since.

The ground came back to women's cricket in March 2018 for a tri-series with Australia and England, in which Australia's 209 for 4 — Meg Lanning 88 from 45 balls — is still the highest women's total made here, and England were once bowled out for 96. Australia's tour of December 2022 brought three more T20 internationals, all won by the visitors, two of them by fewer than 25 runs.

When the Women's Premier League began in March 2023 the whole tournament was played in Mumbai, eleven matches at Brabourne and eleven at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The final was here: Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by seven wickets, Nat Sciver-Brunt taking the match award. The competition's structure and history are set out in the Women's Premier League guide, and the longer national story in the history of women's cricket in India.

Four things the Brabourne record shows

  1. The ground's two most famous days are 63 years apart and both belong to a batter. Vijay Hazare's four hundreds in four Tests between 1948 and 1952, and Sehwag's 293 in 2009, are the innings the venue is defined by.
  2. Its one-day cricket has been feast or famine with almost nothing between. The five Champions Trophy matches averaged 162 in the first innings; the 2018 fixture produced 377. There is no middling sample.
  3. Twenty-seven IPL matches have produced two totals above 215 and two below 116. Sixteen of them were played in one displaced season, which makes the spread a comment on that April rather than on the ground.
  4. More women's international cricket has been played here since 2013 than men's. Twenty women's internationals against ten men's, plus a World Cup final and a Women's Premier League final.

Sources and method

The tables covering the 2009 Test, the nine men's one-day internationals from 2006 onwards, the T20 international and all 27 IPL matches are computed from Cricsheet's ball-by-ball archive of matches at this ground, licensed under Open Data Commons Attribution and read in August 2026. The women's figures come from the same archive, covering the 2013 World Cup, the 2018 tri-series and the 2022 Australian tour. Wicket totals credit only dismissals the scorer attributed to a bowler, so run-outs fall outside every bowling figure quoted.

The seventeen Tests played between December 1948 and January 1973 predate ball-by-ball records entirely. Everything said about them — Vijay Hazare's four centuries in four appearances, the drawn opening sequence, the 1952 win over Pakistan — rests on published match records and ESPNcricinfo ground statistics, and none of it feeds a computed figure here. The same applies to the October 1989 Nehru Cup one-day international, the earliest at the ground, and to the March 2023 Women's Premier League matches, which are described from published results.

The 1937 opening, the Cricket Club of India's ownership and the ground's relationship to the Wankhede are descriptive. Published seating figures for Brabourne differ widely depending on whether the members' areas are counted, so no capacity number is used in any calculation on this page.
