Holkar Cricket Stadium Records & Stats | Indore Cricket Ground

Indore's ground was the Maharani Usharaje Trust Cricket Ground until the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association renamed it in 2010 after the Holkar dynasty that once ruled the state. It holds around thirty thousand, which makes it one of the smaller grounds on India's international circuit, and it did not stage a Test until 8 October 2016, when it became the twenty-second Test venue in the country.
What it has staged since is disproportionate. Six men's one-day internationals here have produced the 418 for 5 that carried Virender Sehwag's 219, which was the highest individual score in the format when it was made. Three Twenty20 internationals have produced a hundred off 35 balls and a total of 260. Three Tests have produced a win by 321 runs, a win by an innings and, seven years later, a defeat inside three days.
India have won nine of their twelve men's internationals at the ground and lost three: a Test that finished inside three days in March 2023, a Twenty20 international in October 2022 in which South Africa made 227 for 3, and a one-day international in January 2026 when New Zealand made 337 batting first and India were bowled out chasing.
The ledger, format by format
| Format | Matches | Window | India played | India W-L | Highest total | Lowest completed total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test (men) | 3 | Oct 2016 – Mar 2023 | 3 | 2-1 | India 557/5d, 2016 | India 109, 2023 |
| ODI (men) | 6 | Dec 2011 – Jan 2026 | 6 | 5-1 | India 418/5, 2011 | Australia 217, 2023 |
| T20I (men) | 3 | Dec 2017 – Oct 2022 | 3 | 2-1 | India 260/5, 2017 | India 178, 2022 |
| ODI (women) | 5 | Oct 2025 | 1 | 0-1 | Australia 326, 2025 | South Africa 97, 2025 |
| IPL | 9 | May 2011 – May 2018 | — | — | Kolkata Knight Riders 245/6, 2018 | Kings XI Punjab 88, 2018 |
Every men's international at the ground has involved India, so the record below is a record of India's home cricket rather than of the world game passing through — with the single exception of the 2025 women's World Cup, four of whose five matches here did not involve the host.
Three Tests, three different matches
| Test | Result | The match in one line |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 2016 v New Zealand | India won by 321 runs | India 557/5d and 216/3d; New Zealand 294 and 153 |
| Nov 2019 v Bangladesh | India won by an innings and 130 runs | Bangladesh 150 and 213; India 493/6d |
| Mar 2023 v Australia | Australia won by 9 wickets | India 109 and 163; Australia 197 and 78/1 |
The first was the ground's introduction to Test cricket and gave it every landmark it still holds with the bat. Virat Kohli made 211, Ajinkya Rahane 188 and Cheteshwar Pujara 101 in a first innings of 557 for 5 declared; Ravichandran Ashwin then took 6 for 81 and 7 for 59, thirteen wickets in the match and still the best return by any bowler here. Kohli's double hundred remains the highest individual Test score at the ground.
Mayank Agarwal's 243 against Bangladesh in November 2019 is the second highest, and the only other Test innings above 200 at Indore. India declared on 493 for 6 and won without batting again, Mohammed Shami taking 3 for 27 and then 4 for 31 in the two Bangladesh innings.
The 2023 match was the one that made the ground's name outside India. It had been moved to Indore from Dharamsala over concerns about the outfield there, and it was over before lunch on the third day. India were bowled out for 109 and 163; Nathan Lyon took 8 for 64 in India's second innings and eleven in the match, Matthew Kuhnemann 5 for 16 in the first, and Umesh Yadav's 3 for 12 in Australia's only completed innings was the best figures by an India seamer at the ground. Lyon's 8 for 64 is the best innings analysis the ground has produced in any men's format. The context of that series is set out in the guide to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and the wider list of Indian Test venues in the Test cricket grounds guide.
8 December 2011: 418 for 5
India's first one-day international at Indore is still its most famous match. Sehwag made 219 from 149 balls with twenty-five fours and seven sixes, passing Sachin Tendulkar's 200 not out to set what was then the highest individual score in the format. India's 418 for 5 remains the highest total made at the ground in any format and the West Indies, replying, were bowled out for 265.
| Highest ODI totals here | Score | Opponent | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | India 418/5 | West Indies | 8 Dec 2011 |
| 2 | India 399/5 | Australia | 24 Sep 2023 |
| 3 | India 385/9 | New Zealand | 24 Jan 2023 |
| 4 | New Zealand 337/8 | India | 18 Jan 2026 |
| 5 | Australia 293/6 | India | 24 Sep 2017 |
Only one target has been chased down here in six attempts: Australia's 293 for 6 in September 2017, which India passed with five wickets in hand after Aaron Finch had made 124. The lowest total successfully defended is India's 247 for 9 against South Africa in October 2015, when South Africa were bowled out 22 short. India's fifty-over record at home is set out in the history of ODI cricket in India, and the country's biggest scores in the highest ODI team totals list.
Shubman Gill has made more runs here than anyone — 239 from three matches, including 112 against New Zealand in January 2023 — with Kohli on 223 and Rohit Sharma on 213. Devon Conway's 138 and Daryl Mitchell's 137 are the highest scores by a visiting batter. No bowler has taken five in an innings in a one-day international at the ground; Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav lead with six wickets each.
Two very large Twenty20 nights and one quiet one
| Date | Match | Scores | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22 Dec 2017 | India v Sri Lanka | India 260/5; Sri Lanka 172/9 | India won by 88 runs |
| 7 Jan 2020 | India v Sri Lanka | Sri Lanka 142/9; India 144/3 | India won by 7 wickets |
| 4 Oct 2022 | India v South Africa | South Africa 227/3; India 178 | South Africa won by 49 runs |
The December 2017 match produced the innings the ground is best known for in the short format. Rohit Sharma made 118 from 43 balls and reached his hundred in 35, matching what was then the fastest century in a Twenty20 international. KL Rahul made 89 alongside him and India's 260 for 5 was their highest total in the format at the time.
Rilee Rossouw answered it five years later with 100 not out from 48 balls in South Africa's 227 for 3, the only other hundred scored here in a T20 international. Kuldeep Yadav's five wickets are the most by any bowler across the three matches, and Yuzvendra Chahal's 4 for 52 is the best return.
Nine IPL matches, eight of them chased down
Indore was used by Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011 and then by Kings XI Punjab as a secondary home ground in 2017 and 2018. Nine matches were played there and the side batting second won eight of them. The single exception came on 12 May 2018.
Kolkata Knight Riders' 245 for 6 in May 2018 is the highest total, made against Kings XI Punjab, who replied with 214 for 8. Two days later Kings XI were bowled out for 88 and Royal Challengers Bangalore knocked the runs off without losing a wicket. Hashim Amla's 104 in April 2017 is the only IPL hundred at the ground, and Andrew Tye's seven wickets across four matches the largest aggregate. No IPL match has been played at Indore since May 2018.
The 2025 women's World Cup week
| Date | Match | Scores | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Oct 2025 | Australia v New Zealand | Australia 326; New Zealand 237 | Australia won by 89 runs |
| 6 Oct 2025 | New Zealand v South Africa | New Zealand 231; South Africa 234/4 | South Africa won by 6 wickets |
| 19 Oct 2025 | England v India | England 288/8; India 284/6 | England won by 4 runs |
| 22 Oct 2025 | England v Australia | England 244/9; Australia 248/4 | Australia won by 6 wickets |
| 25 Oct 2025 | South Africa v Australia | South Africa 97; Australia 98/3 | Australia won by 7 wickets |
Five matches of the 2025 tournament were staged here and they covered the full range the ground can produce. Ashleigh Gardner's 219 runs across two of them, including 115, is the highest aggregate by any woman at Indore; Sophie Devine made 112, Heather Knight 109 and Tazmin Brits 101.
The last of the five was the outlier. South Africa were bowled out for 97 and Alana King took 7 for 18 — the best bowling figures recorded at the ground by any woman, and better by wickets than anything achieved here in a men's one-day international. India's only appearance in the block ended in a four-run defeat to England in a match that produced 572 runs. The longer story of the national side is in the guide to India's women's cricket history.
Who leads the ground's lists
| Category | Leader | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| Most Test runs | Ajinkya Rahane | 297 |
| Highest Test score | Virat Kohli | 211 |
| Most Test wickets | Ravichandran Ashwin | 22 |
| Best Test innings figures | Nathan Lyon | 8 for 64 |
| Most ODI runs (men) | Shubman Gill | 239 |
| Highest ODI score | Virender Sehwag | 219 |
| Most T20I runs | KL Rahul | 134 |
| Highest T20I score | Rohit Sharma | 118 |
| Most IPL runs | KL Rahul | 195 |
Ajinkya Rahane reached 297 Test runs here in two matches, which says as much about the size of the 2016 and 2019 first innings as about him. Virat Kohli is the only batter to pass 200 runs in two different formats at the ground, and Cheteshwar Pujara made 256 Test runs from the three matches and passed fifty once, a hundred once and thirty on no other occasion.
What twelve internationals add up to
Indore's record reads as a small sample with unusually loud contents. Every landmark it holds is at an extreme: the highest one-day score made anywhere at the time, a Twenty20 hundred off 35 balls, a Test won by 321 runs, a Test lost inside three days. That is partly the nature of a ground with twelve internationals to its name — there is no mass of ordinary matches to pull the record back towards the middle.
The one consistent thread is that batting first has worked in fifty-over cricket and not in the IPL, on the same square, in different months of the year. How the scoring actually distributes across formats and phases is set out on the Holkar Stadium pitch guide; the ground's standing among India's larger venues is covered in the guide to India's iconic cricket stadiums, and the wider domestic and international picture on the cricket in India hub.
Sources and method
Match results, totals, individual scores and bowling analyses are computed from delivery-level records of every men's Test, one-day international, Twenty20 international and IPL match played at Holkar Cricket Stadium, and of the five women's one-day internationals staged here during the 2025 World Cup. The ground's Test history begins in October 2016 and is complete; nothing predates the archive.
Aggregate tables count only matches at this venue. "Most runs" figures are career totals at the ground rather than in a single match, and bowling wickets count only dismissals credited to a bowler, so run-outs are excluded from every wicket-taking figure quoted. Where an innings closed on a declaration it is marked as such and counted as completed.
The ground's name, ownership, capacity and the reason the 2023 Test was relocated from Dharamsala are drawn from the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association and from contemporary reporting rather than from the match data. Records current as of 20 August 2026.
