IPL Most Stumpings: All-Time Records

MS Dhoni has stumped 47 batters in the Indian Premier League, ten more than anyone else. Nine of those came off Ravindra Jadeja and nine off Ravichandran Ashwin, which is as neat a summary of Chennai Super Kings' bowling attack across a decade as any statistic offers.
Only 388 stumpings have been recorded in the competition's entire history — roughly one every three and a bit matches. It is the rarest of the standard modes of dismissal in Twenty20 and getting rarer: the 2010 season produced 36 and no season since 2014 has reached 26.
Every figure below is counted from ball-by-ball records of all 1,243 Indian Premier League matches from April 2008 to the 2026 final.

Forty-nine keepers have made at least one stumping in the competition. The top nine account for 234 of the 388 — three-fifths of the total to a fifth of the names — which is what you would expect of a skill that rewards long tenure behind one attack.
Dhoni's lead is the largest of any all-time IPL leaderboard relative to the field. He is 27 per cent clear of Karthik, and Karthik played more seasons than most of the men below him.

Every name is a spinner, and eight of the ten are wrist- or finger-spinners who flight the ball rather than push it through. Amit Mishra's 28 is the highest, and his leg-spin produced stumpings for six different keepers across five franchises.
The list is not simply a ranking of the most successful spinners in the competition. It ranks the ones who beat the bat in the air — a bowler who takes wickets by having batters caught on the boundary contributes nothing here. Sunil Narine, whose wicket tally far exceeds most of the names above him, has eleven.

Four pairs share the top mark at nine, and Amit Mishra appears in two of them with different keepers — Karthik and Pant, in different franchises and a decade apart.
The Gilchrist and Pragyan Ojha combination belongs almost entirely to Deccan Chargers between the 2009 and 2012 seasons, and is the only pairing in the top four that has been finished for more than ten years.

The 2010 season produced 36 stumpings in 60 matches. The 2026 season produced twelve in 74. Per match, the rate has fallen by roughly three quarters in sixteen years, and no season since 2014 has passed 26.
Three things drive it. Spinners bowl a smaller share of overs than they did, and the ones who do bowl push the ball flatter and faster through the air, giving batters less reason to leave the crease. Batters themselves come down the pitch less than they did when spin was the accepted way to slow an innings — the modern answer to a spinner is to hit from the crease rather than to advance. And the tightening of the wide law down the leg side has removed a proportion of the deliveries that used to draw a batter forward and past the ball.
What the leaderboard rewards
Five observations the tables leave implicit:
- Dhoni's 47 came at a rate of roughly one every five matches. That is not the highest rate on the list — several keepers with smaller totals were more frequent — but no one has sustained anything close over a comparable number of seasons.
- Six of the top nine are Indian keepers who kept to Indian spinners for most of their careers. The two overseas names in that group, Gilchrist and de Kock, both did the bulk of their work in a five-season window rather than across a full career.
- Rishabh Pant's 24 is the highest total by a keeper who has played entirely in the post-2016 era, when the rate had already begun to fall. On a per-season basis it is among the strongest on the list.
- No wicketkeeper has made more than three stumpings in a single match, and it has happened only four times in eighteen seasons: Dhoni in 2010 and 2011, Robin Uthappa in 2017 and Heinrich Klaasen in 2018.
- The gap between the 9th and 10th places on the keeper list — 16 to 10 — is the largest anywhere in the top twenty, which marks the boundary between career keepers and men who kept for part of a career.

Sources and method
Every stumping on this page was counted from the Cricsheet ball-by-ball archive (cricsheet.org, ODC-BY 1.0), which covers all 1,243 IPL matches from 18 April 2008 to 31 May 2026. A stumping is a delivery whose recorded dismissal kind is "stumped", credited to the fielder named on that dismissal — which for a stumping is always the wicketkeeper.
The bowler column credits the bowler of the delivery on which the stumping occurred. That is the conventional attribution and the one the competition's own records use; it means a bowler's total here reflects deliveries that beat the bat while the batter was out of the crease, not any judgement about who created the opportunity.
Super overs are excluded, since a super-over dismissal does not enter the competition's career records. Season figures are grouped by the calendar year the match was played, which differs from the archive's own season labels for the 2007/08, 2009/10 and 2020/21 tournaments; grouping by calendar year keeps each row equal to one tournament.
Two limits. Keeper names follow the Cricsheet registry's spellings, consistent within the archive but differing from some scorecards in the transliteration of Indian names. Where a keeper played for more than one franchise, all his stumpings are combined into a single career total rather than split by club. All figures close with the 2026 final and are current as of 28 August 2026.
