Thirty-seven matches make this the fixture Mumbai Indians have played more often than any other, and 25-12 makes it the most one-sided long pairing in their record. Kolkata Knight Riders have won twelve, six of them since the 2021 season, which is the only period in eighteen years when the fixture has looked even.
Mumbai's advantage is concentrated at home. They have won eleven of thirteen at the Wankhede Stadium, and Kolkata's only two wins there came in 2012 and 2024, twelve years apart. Eden Gardens has been closer but still favours the visitors: Mumbai lead 7-5 in Kolkata.
The fixture also holds both extremes of Mumbai's history against Kolkata within four seasons of each other. Kolkata were bowled out for 67 at the Wankhede on 16 May 2008 and Mumbai knocked off 68 in 5.3 overs. Ten years later, at Eden Gardens on 9 May 2018, Mumbai made 210 for 6 and won by 102 runs — the largest margin either side has inflicted on the other.

Between 14 May 2015 and 9 May 2018 Mumbai won eight consecutive matches in this fixture — both legs in 2016, all three meetings in 2017 including Qualifier 2, and both in 2018. Nothing else in the fixture comes close; Kolkata's longest run is three, in 2022.
Kolkata's recent form is the reason the last column changes. Since 2021 they have won six of ten, including both legs in 2022 and both in 2024, and the most recent meeting at Eden Gardens in May 2026.

Two thirds of the fixture has been played at the two home grounds and Mumbai are 18-7 across them combined. The four matches in Abu Dhabi across the 2014, 2020 and 2021 seasons split two apiece. Only three of the 37 have been played at grounds belonging to neither side inside India — Cuttack in 2014, Bengaluru for the 2017 Qualifier 2 and Chepauk in 2021 — and Mumbai won two of those. Only four innings in 37 matches have reached 200, and two of them came in the same game — Mumbai's 224 for 4 chasing Kolkata's 220 for 4 at the Wankhede on 29 March 2026, which is by far the highest-scoring meeting the two have had. Kolkata's 232 for 2 at Eden Gardens in April 2019 remains the biggest single innings in the fixture, and Mumbai's 198 for 7 in reply was not enough.
At the other end, Kolkata own five of the eight lowest completed totals: 67 at the Wankhede in 2008, 95 at Port Elizabeth in 2009, 105 at the Wankhede in 2013, 107 in the 2017 Qualifier 2 and 108 at Eden Gardens in 2018. The 67 is one of the lowest totals in the competition's history and the IPL's lowest team totals page places it. Mumbai's lowest is 108 all out at their own ground in 2012, in a match Kolkata won by 32 runs.

The middle period is the highest, which is unusual — most fixtures in the competition have scored most heavily since 2020. Here the 2020 to 2026 average is held down by low-scoring matches in Abu Dhabi and Pune and the rain-shortened 2024 game at Eden Gardens.

Mumbai chase in this fixture more often than they defend, and their two four-wicket wins — the 2011 Eliminator and the 2017 league game at the Wankhede — were both completed in the last over. Kolkata's split is exactly even.
Four points the tables leave implicit:
- Mumbai's five wins by 49 runs or more all came against a Kolkata side batting second or bowled out inside nineteen overs. Kolkata's largest win by runs is 52.
- Kolkata have never won two consecutive matches at the Wankhede. Mumbai have won three consecutively at Eden Gardens twice.
- The 2017 season is the only one in which the two met three times, and Mumbai won all three on their way to the title.
- Eleven of the twelve Kolkata wins came by more than 17 runs or with an over or more to spare. Their only genuinely narrow win is the four-wicket result at Eden Gardens in May 2026.

Sources and method
Every scoreline, date, ground and margin here was read off this site's IPL season match lists for 2008 to 2026 and confirmed against the ESPNcricinfo scorecard for each match. The two extreme matches — Kolkata's 67 all out at the Wankhede in May 2008 and Mumbai's 102-run win at Eden Gardens in May 2018 — were verified individually, as was the rain-reduced sixteen-over game of May 2024.
Conventions. All 37 meetings produced a result; there is no tie and no no-result in the fixture. Home allocation follows the designated host, so the Brabourne match of 2010 counts as a Mumbai home game and the DY Patil match of 2022 does not, since that season was played across four neutral Maharashtra venues. Abu Dhabi's ground appears under two names in the source records and is consolidated here to four matches. The 2024 Eden Gardens match is included in the results table and in the win columns but excluded from the first-innings averages, since neither innings ran twenty overs.
Fixture-only individual aggregates are not published. The dataset behind these tables records match results rather than ball-by-ball detail, so a leading run scorer or wicket taker across these 37 matches specifically cannot be derived from it, and we have left the figures out rather than estimate them.
