India Test most fours: All-Time Records

Sachin Tendulkar hit at least 2,058 fours in Test cricket for India. Rahul Dravid hit 1,651, Virender Sehwag 1,219, VVS Laxman 1,135 and Virat Kohli 1,027. Those five are the only India batters to have passed a thousand, and the order is close to, but not identical with, the order of the run-scoring list.

The phrase "at least" in the first sentence is doing real work, and it applies to several figures on this page. Ball-by-ball scoring was not universal in Test cricket until relatively recently, and for matches where no such record survives, the boundary count is incomplete. ESPNcricinfo marks these totals with a plus sign to indicate a minimum rather than a final figure. Tendulkar's 2,058, Sunil Gavaskar's 908, Mohammad Azharuddin's 720, Gundappa Viswanath's 567, Kapil Dev's 557 and Dilip Vengsarkar's 509 all carry that mark.

This matters most for the batters whose careers ran through the 1970s and 1980s, and it means the list below cannot be read as a strict ranking across eras. Where a figure is a minimum, this page says so rather than presenting it as settled.

Boundary share: how much of a career arrived in fours

This table is restricted to batters whose boundary count is complete, because a minimum figure would produce a share that is also a minimum and the comparison would be meaningless. Runs in fours is the four count multiplied by four; the share is that number as a percentage of career runs, rounded.

Virender Sehwag's 57 per cent is the highest and by a wide margin. More than half of every run he made for India in Tests came in a single stroke to the rope, which is an extraordinary figure for a format played over five days and reflects a method built almost entirely on hitting the ball hard rather than running it.

Ravindra Jadeja's 39 per cent is the lowest here, and that is a batting-position effect rather than a style one: batting at seven with the tail, he runs more of his runs because there is nobody at the other end to farm the strike with.

Sehwag and Dravid, the two ends of the same list

Rahul Dravid hit 1,651 fours and Virender Sehwag 1,219, and Dravid needed 106 more innings to do it. Their boundary shares are 50 and 57 per cent respectively.

The gap is smaller than reputation suggests. Dravid is remembered as an accumulator and Sehwag as a destroyer, and the truth in the numbers is that both took about half their runs in fours, because that is what Test batting looks like when it works. The real difference between them is not boundary share but tempo: Sehwag arrived at 1,219 fours in 178 innings, Dravid at 1,651 in 284.

Cheteshwar Pujara's 48 per cent is close to Sehwag's 57 and to Dravid's 50, which is the most counter-intuitive figure in the table. Pujara is the most defensive Test batter India has produced in decades, and yet nearly half his runs came in fours. Very slow Test batting is not the absence of boundaries; it is the absence of everything else.

Gavaskar's case is the one where the gap is likely to be largest. He played 214 innings between 1971 and 1987 and scored 10,122 runs, and the recorded four count of 908 would imply a boundary share of only 36 per cent — well below every complete figure on this page for a batter of his class. The true number is certainly higher, and how much higher is not recoverable from the published record.

That is a reason to be careful with any claim about how boundary-hitting has changed over time. The apparent rise in boundary share across eras is at least partly an artefact of better record-keeping, and this page does not present an era comparison for exactly that reason.

Three observations

Only five India batters have hit a thousand Test fours, and four of the five played the bulk of their careers between 1996 and 2013. That cluster is partly about the era's batting and partly about the same records question: it is the first generation for which complete ball-by-ball data exists across a whole career.

The fours list and the runs list diverge most at Sunil Gavaskar, who is third on India's Test run-scorers and sixth here, and at Cheteshwar Pujara, who is seventh on runs and eighth on fours. In Gavaskar's case the divergence is a data artefact. In Pujara's it is real, and reflects a batter who occupied the crease for far longer per run than anyone around him.

Two bowlers appear in the top twenty. Ravichandran Ashwin hit 399 fours and Kapil Dev at least 557, both from careers batting at seven or eight. Ashwin's 46 per cent boundary share is higher than Kohli's, which says something about how a lower-order batter scores: with the field spread and the tail to protect, the boundary is often the only reliable option.

Sources and method

All boundary figures come from ESPNcricinfo's Statsguru career records for India men's Test cricket, read in August 2026 and covering matches to that date. Only Tests played for India count.

The most important limitation on this page is stated in the tables rather than hidden here. Statsguru marks an incomplete boundary count with a plus sign, meaning the batter hit at least that many fours and the true figure is higher by an unknown amount. Six of the top twenty carry that mark, all of them players whose careers began before 1990. Their positions in the ranking are therefore provisional, and Gavaskar's in particular is very likely too low.

Boundary share is computed here as fours multiplied by four, divided by career runs, expressed as a percentage and rounded to the nearest whole number. It counts only fours, not sixes, so it understates each batter's total share of runs scored in boundaries. Only batters with a complete four count are included in that table.

Where this page explains a figure by reference to batting position or method, that is an interpretation offered to make the number legible, not something the figures themselves prove. No adjustment has been made for era, pitch or opposition.
