Nine matches, five to Gujarat Titans and four to Mumbai Indians. The fixture began in 2022, Gujarat's first season, and it has already produced two knockouts — one each.
The number that shapes everything here is one. One chase has succeeded in nine attempts. Gujarat's three-wicket win at the Wankhede on 6 May 2025, chasing a Duckworth-Lewis-revised target after rain, is the only time the side batting second has won. The other eight matches all went to the team that set the total, whatever the size of it.
Those totals have been large. The average first-innings score across the nine is 198, higher than any of Mumbai's older fixtures, and five innings have passed 200.

Reading that table down is the fastest way to understand the fixture. Only row seven breaks the pattern, and it took rain to do it. Two of the eight batting-first wins were by margins of six runs or fewer, so it is not that the chases were hopeless — they simply have not been completed.

Both are the two highest first-innings totals in the fixture, and both were won by the side that made them. Gujarat's 233 for 3 in Qualifier 2 remains the largest total either has posted, and it took them to a second consecutive final. Mumbai's 228 for 5 at Mullanpur two years later is the second largest. Gujarat have won four of the five at their own ground, and Mumbai's single win there is the 99-run result of 20 April 2026, when Gujarat were bowled out for 100 in 15.5 overs — the lowest total in the fixture and the largest margin in it. Before that Mumbai had lost four consecutive matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium, three of them by 36 runs or more.
At the Wankhede the record is one apiece from two, which for a ground Mumbai have used as their base since 2010 is a thin return. Gujarat have not lost a match there.

The single meetings in 2022, 2024 and 2026 are a consequence of the ten-team group format, which pairs some sides once and others twice. Mumbai's 2022 win came in Gujarat's title-winning season and was one of only four matches Mumbai won all year. The 2025 Eliminator at Mullanpur produced 436 runs, the highest aggregate in the fixture, and the 2023 Qualifier 2 the second at 404. Each side has been bowled out once in nine matches: Mumbai for 171 in that Qualifier 2, Gujarat for 100 at Ahmedabad in 2026. Every other innings has run its full twenty overs or been closed by a completed chase.
Mumbai's lowest total is 152 for 9 at Ahmedabad in April 2023. Nothing in this fixture has been scored below 100, and the range from 100 to 233 across eighteen innings is narrower than the run-scoring suggests.
Chasing, and why it has not worked

Mumbai have not once won this fixture batting second in nine attempts, and Gujarat's only success came in a rain-shortened game. Across the competition the side chasing wins slightly more often than not, so a 1-8 split in a nine-match sample is a genuine outlier rather than a rounding artefact — the lowest totals defended page shows how unusual it is for defences to hold this consistently.
Four observations the tables leave out:
- Every match in the fixture has been played in Ahmedabad, Mumbai or Mullanpur. Neither side has ever met the other outside those three cities.
- Gujarat's five wins came by 55, 62, 6, 36 runs and three wickets. Four of the five were batting first, and the two knockout-shaped margins were the largest.
- Mumbai have won the two most recent meetings, the 2025 Eliminator and the 2026 league game, and both were their two largest wins in the fixture.
- The 2025 season is the only one in which the two met three times and split it 2-1, having also done so in 2023 — the same score, the other way round.

Sources and method
All nine results, with dates, grounds, innings scores and margins, are computed from this site's IPL season match lists for 2022 to 2026 and checked against ESPNcricinfo scorecards. Batting order in the first table is taken from each match's scorecard rather than inferred, which matters here because the entire argument of the page rests on it.
Conventions. Gujarat Titans entered the competition in 2022; the earlier Gujarat Lions franchise of 2016 and 2017 was a separate entry and its matches against Mumbai are not counted here. All nine meetings produced a result, one of them by the DLS method after a shortened second innings. The Brabourne Stadium match of May 2022 is listed under Mumbai in the venue table because the ground is one of their home venues, though that season was played across four neutral Maharashtra grounds. The rain-affected Wankhede match of May 2025 is included in the win columns and in the batting-order table but its shortened Gujarat innings is flagged as DLS.
Fixture-only individual aggregates are not published here. The dataset behind these tables holds match results rather than ball-by-ball records, so a leading run scorer or wicket taker across these nine matches cannot be derived from it and has been omitted rather than estimated.
